Use the carrier’s own compatibility checker with the phone’s IMEI, then verify the exact regional model against the carrier’s approved-device list, LTE and 5G bands, voice requirements, plan rules, and unlock status. Band matching is only a screening step: it cannot guarantee activation, coverage, speed, or every feature.

Start with the exact phone variant, not its marketing name

Imported phones often share one product name across several regional versions. Those versions can differ in modem bands, carrier firmware, certification, SIM configuration, and supported calling features. A listing that says “Model X 5G” is not enough to establish US compatibility.

Find the complete model identifier

Use the manufacturer’s settings page, the label on the box, or the regulatory label to record the full model number and the sales region. Do not rely on color, storage capacity, or a family name. If the seller gives only a marketplace name, request the precise model code before paying.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the device’s IMEI available as well. Dual-SIM phones can show more than one IMEI; record the identifier for the SIM or eSIM you expect to activate. A carrier may also request a MEID or ESN. Enter the identifier for the actual handset being considered, not a different unit from the same product family.

Why regional version matters

Two variants can both advertise LTE and 5G while lacking different US low-band frequencies, capacity bands, or carrier-specific software. One version may be approved while another is rejected. The carrier’s database and the manufacturer’s specification for that exact region are therefore more reliable than a generic band list.

Choose the real service provider

Compatibility is network-specific. Decide whether you will use AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, or an MVNO before checking the phone. An MVNO can use a parent network but still apply its own device, plan, or activation rules. Use the MVNO’s checker and ask which underlying network and features apply to your plan; do not assume the parent carrier’s result answers every question.

Run the carrier’s official IMEI checker first

Official tools can identify requirements that a radio-band comparison cannot, including device approval, lock status, software support, and activation eligibility.

Provider What to submit What the provider indicates Official resource
T-Mobile IMEI for the precise phone T-Mobile describes IMEI checking as its fastest and most accurate compatibility method. Results can include compatibility, lock or unlock information, or an unknown result. T-Mobile bring-your-own-phone checker
AT&T IMEI or ESN during BYOD The checker determines whether the device can be brought to the network; model and software approval still matter. AT&T BYOD
Verizon Device ID such as IMEI, MEID, and/or ESN The result is tied to the submitted device and Verizon’s current activation rules. Verizon BYOD FAQ

If the checker returns “unknown,” do not treat that as approval or rejection. T-Mobile recommends contacting support or visiting a store for an uncertain result. Give the representative the full model number, sales region, and IMEI and ask for a compatibility decision before purchasing or porting your line.

Check the carrier’s approved-device list and software requirements

An imported handset can contain the right radios and still fail a carrier’s eligibility rules. AT&T maintains a tested-and-approved list that is explicitly sensitive to model and version. Read the entry for the complete model code, not merely the manufacturer or family. The list identifies some devices as AT&T or authorized open-market versions only. It also warns that software updates may be required for HD Voice, Wi-Fi Calling, Advanced Messaging, or 5G. An international variant can therefore be excluded even when a US variant with a similar name appears on the list.

Approval lists and checkers change as carriers retire technologies, add software certifications, or alter activation policies. Recheck shortly before activation, especially if you bought the phone months earlier.

Compare LTE and 5G radios by technology and band

After the official check, obtain the manufacturer’s technical specification for your exact regional variant. Make two separate comparisons:

  1. Compare the phone’s LTE bands with the carrier’s LTE frequencies and the bands used where you live.
  2. Compare the phone’s 5G NR bands with the carrier’s 5G frequencies and the 5G layer available at your locations.

Do not treat a band number as interchangeable across technologies. An LTE band and a similarly numbered NR band are different radio specifications. T-Mobile states that a device must support both the frequency (band) and the technology used locally, such as 5G, 4G LTE, or 2G. Its network information lists examples including n41 at 2.5 GHz, n71 at 600 MHz, and mmWave n258, n260, and n261: T-Mobile network frequencies.

Comparison item What to verify on the phone Why it matters
LTE low-band coverage Manufacturer-listed LTE bands that match the carrier’s low-frequency deployment Low bands generally provide broader reach and better building penetration where deployed.
LTE capacity bands Additional LTE bands used by the carrier in your locations Missing capacity bands can reduce usable performance even when basic LTE connects.
5G NR coverage layers Exact NR bands, such as n41 or n71 where applicable A phone can be labeled 5G yet miss a carrier’s main coverage or capacity layer.
mmWave 5G Specific mmWave NR bands, where the carrier uses them Missing mmWave support affects only those high-frequency deployments, not necessarily all 5G.
Technology mode Whether the phone supports the carrier’s required 4G LTE or 5G mode Matching a frequency without the required technology does not produce service.

A band list is a filter, not a performance forecast. It does not show tower density, local coverage, congestion, antenna tuning, roaming behavior, or whether the carrier has certified that variant.

Determine which 5G tier the phone and plan can use

“5G capable” does not mean “supports every 5G layer.” AT&T identifies n77 as the requirement for mid-band 5G+ and n260 for high-band 5G+. The device and the plan must both qualify, and the relevant network must be available at your location. See AT&T’s 5G+ FAQ.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Record the specific outcome you need:

  • Any 5G connection: confirm that the exact variant has the carrier’s supported NR bands and that the plan permits 5G.
  • Mid-band 5G: verify the required mid-band NR band, such as n77 for AT&T 5G+, in addition to plan and device approval.
  • High-band or mmWave: verify the particular mmWave band, such as n260 for AT&T 5G+, and understand that coverage is highly location-dependent.

Do not promise a 5G icon, a particular speed, or access at every address from hardware specifications alone.

Verify voice service and the features you actually use

Voice compatibility deserves a separate check, especially for older imports. US Mobile advises confirming 4G LTE and VoLTE, HD Voice, or Enhanced Calling support: US Mobile device compatibility guidance. A phone may pass a data-band comparison but lack the voice provisioning required by the chosen provider.

Ask the carrier or MVNO about each feature that matters to you:

  • VoLTE, HD Voice, or Enhanced Calling
  • Wi-Fi Calling
  • eSIM activation and the supported eSIM profile
  • Hotspot or tethering
  • Visual voicemail
  • Advanced Messaging or other carrier messaging functions
  • Dual-SIM behavior when one line is on eSIM

AT&T’s approved-device document specifically notes that software updates can affect HD Voice, Wi-Fi Calling, Advanced Messaging, and 5G. Ask whether the imported variant receives the required carrier configuration or firmware update.

Confirm the phone is unlocked and activation-ready

Lock status is independent of radio support. A phone can contain every needed band and still be restricted to its original carrier. The original carrier, not the new provider, controls unlocking. T-Mobile directs customers to the original carrier for this process: T-Mobile BYOD guidance.

What to check before buying

  • Request written confirmation that the handset is SIM-unlocked, not merely described as “international” or “dual-SIM.”
  • Check whether an unpaid balance, fraud flag, or financing obligation can block unlocking.
  • Ask whether both the physical SIM and eSIM are unlocked on a dual-SIM device.
  • Confirm that the IMEI supplied by the seller belongs to the exact handset you will receive.

Allow time for eSIM activation

Verizon notes that after unlocking an eSIM or dual-SIM device, activation on Verizon can take up to 24 hours: Verizon BYOD FAQ. Do not schedule a critical number port or travel day around an immediate eSIM switch unless Verizon has confirmed readiness.

Use a carrier-by-carrier comparison when you have more than one option

Do not rank carriers by the number of matching bands. Compare the complete set of eligibility and service factors.

A purchase-to-activation workflow

  1. Collect the identifiers. Write down the complete model number, sales region, IMEI or IMEIs, and whether the phone uses a physical SIM, eSIM, or both.
  2. Select the service. Name the exact carrier or MVNO and the plan, including any 5G tier you expect.
  3. Run the official checker. Enter the handset’s IMEI, MEID, or ESN as requested. Save a screenshot or reference number.
  4. Read the approved list. Match the full model/version and check software notes. Do not substitute a US model with a similar marketing name.
  5. Audit the radios. Compare the manufacturer’s LTE and 5G NR lists separately with the carrier’s published frequencies.
  6. Check voice and features. Confirm VoLTE or HD Voice, Wi-Fi Calling, eSIM, hotspot, voicemail, and messaging requirements.
  7. Prove unlock status. Obtain confirmation from the original carrier and ask whether eSIM or both SIM slots are included.
  8. Contact support if any result conflicts. Provide the model number and IMEI before buying, porting, or deleting your old service.
  9. Activate conservatively. Keep the old phone and line working until calls, texts, data, emergency calling, and the features you need have been tested.

What to do when the checker says no or unknown

If the IMEI is rejected

Ask whether the rejection is caused by an unsupported model, a blocked or financed IMEI, an incorrect identifier, or a missing software certification. Re-enter the IMEI carefully and compare it with the handset’s settings. If the result remains negative, do not assume a band match will override the carrier’s decision.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the result is unknown

Contact the carrier with the complete model and regional variant. T-Mobile explicitly treats unknown compatibility as a reason to contact support or visit a store. Request a written or ticketed answer and ask whether activation would support your needed voice and 5G features.

If LTE works but voice does not

Check VoLTE or HD Voice provisioning first. Confirm that the phone has current firmware for that carrier and that the approved list includes the exact variant. A data connection alone does not establish voice compatibility.

If 5G does not appear

Verify that the plan includes 5G, the phone supports the local NR band, the carrier has enabled that layer at your location, and the device software is current. Test in an area where the carrier documents the relevant 5G service; a missing 5G icon in one location is not proof that the hardware is defective.

If eSIM activation stalls

Confirm that the phone is unlocked, the eSIM is not tied to another carrier, and the device identifier submitted to the provider matches the eSIM-capable handset. For Verizon, allow up to 24 hours after unlocking an eSIM or dual-SIM device before concluding that activation failed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Coverage, performance, and future changes

Even a fully approved, band-compatible phone can perform differently from a carrier-sold model. Antenna design, modem firmware, carrier aggregation, software tuning, congestion, local terrain, and indoor conditions all affect service. T-Mobile states that it does not guarantee the performance or feature compatibility of non-T-Mobile devices: T-Mobile BYOD terms.

Carrier networks, plan eligibility, approved-device lists, and unlocking rules are not static. The AT&T list cited above carries a March 27, 2026 update date, while the carrier pages and checkers themselves are dynamic. Recheck the official tools immediately before purchase and again before activation if time has passed or the carrier has announced a network change.
