To determine whether a BIG-IP device is vulnerable, identify its complete TMOS version and build, provisioned modules, platform, and HA or vCMP role, then compare those facts with the matching F5 security advisory and release-note fixed-version table. The product name alone is not enough. As of October 17, 2026, F5 marks BIG-IP 17.5.1.10 and 21.1.0.3 as critical releases; both list BIG-IP APM CVE-2026-94127 as fixed in the stated version.
A controlled update consists of verifying the exact image, creating a UCS configuration archive, installing the image on a new software volume, rebooting in an approved window, and validating software, synchronization, failover, traffic, logs, and applications. The previous volume remains available for recovery if the new boot fails.
What determines whether a BIG-IP device is vulnerable?
Vulnerability status is specific to a software branch, exact build, module, platform, and deployment. A BIG-IP appliance, BIG-IP Virtual Edition (VE), VIPRION system, and vCMP guest can have different exposure or upgrade requirements even when they share a product family name. A release that fixes a vulnerability on one branch is not automatically the correct fix for another branch.

From the command line, tmsh show sys version provides the running version and build. Also record the current software volumes with tmsh show sys software status and imported images with tmsh list sys software image. Keep the command output with the change record so another operator can reproduce the vulnerability decision.
How to match your build to F5’s authoritative fix information
Use the F5 security advisory and release notes for the exact branch shown in your inventory. Read the affected-product, affected-module, and fixed-version sections together. If an advisory requires a particular maintenance or point release, do not substitute a newer-looking image from a different branch without confirming platform and configuration support.
Current critical fixes identified by F5
| Branch or release | F5 designation | Vulnerability information | What the operator must confirm |
|---|---|---|---|
| BIG-IP 17.5.1.10 | Critical release; release notes updated October 14, 2026 | Lists BIG-IP APM CVE-2026-94127 as fixed in 17.5.1.10 | The device is on the 17.5 branch, the APM exposure applies to its configuration, and the image supports the appliance, VE, VIPRION, or cloud platform in use |
| BIG-IP 21.1.0.3 | Critical release; release notes updated October 14, 2026 | Lists CVE-2026-94127 as fixed in 21.1.0.3 | The device is eligible for the 21.1 branch and all provisioned modules and platform combinations are supported |
| BIG-IP 21.0.0.2 | Earlier branch release | Release notes list jQuery CVE-2020-11023 and several Jetty CVEs among its vulnerability fixes | Do not treat this older fix list as proof that a 17.5 or 21.1 device has the same coverage; consult the advisory for the exact branch and build |
F5 labels the 17.5.1.10 and 21.1.0.3 releases critical and advises treating every critical release as closing a critical gap. “Latest” therefore means the latest supported fixed release for your branch and platform, not simply the highest number visible in a download list. A MyF5 account, support entitlement, and the device’s authenticated advisory access may be required to see complete applicability details; public release notes do not expose every device-specific condition.
Pre-change checklist
Do not begin an installation until each item below is documented and assigned to an operator.
- Complete version, build, modules, platform, HA/vCMP role, and current boot volume.
- Matching F5 advisory and release notes reviewed, including fixed-version and module tables.
- Approved maintenance window with application owners and a tested communications plan.
- Exact image downloaded from F5, with its associated checksum or signature material.
- Image integrity checked and the software-image status showing
verified yes. - Recent UCS archive created, checked for errors, downloaded to secure remote storage, and its encryption passphrase retained.
- Separate backup made for a customized
/var/spool/cron/root; F5 does not include that customized file in a UCS archive. - Console or out-of-band access available in case management access is lost after reboot.
- Rollback volume and acceptance tests identified before the change starts.
How to verify a BIG-IP software image
Download the exact image
Obtain the image that F5 lists for your branch, platform, and module combination, together with the matching checksum or signature files. Do not rename files in a way that makes the release or build ambiguous. Record the download date, filename, and expected digest in the change record.

Transfer it securely
F5 identifies Secure Copy Protocol (SCP) as the preferred method for transferring files to or from an F5 device. Use an authenticated administrative account and a protected management path. If your organization uses a staging server, preserve the original checksum or signature file beside the image so both can be checked after transfer.
Confirm integrity on the BIG-IP
Use the image-verification method documented for your BIG-IP release. In the Configuration utility, inspect the imported image’s verification state and continue only when it reports verified yes. A failed, missing, or indeterminate verification is a stop condition: remove the image, obtain it again from F5, and repeat the transfer and verification. Never bypass verification because the file name looks correct.

How to create and protect a UCS backup
- Open System > Archives in the Configuration utility.
- Create a new UCS archive and include a descriptive name that identifies the device, date, and pre-update version.
- Wait for the archive job to finish, then inspect the job for errors rather than assuming that a completed-looking entry is usable.
- Download the archive to secure remote storage and restrict access to the operators who need it.
- If the archive is encrypted, store its passphrase in the approved password or secrets system. Losing the passphrase can make the backup unusable.
- Back up a customized
/var/spool/cron/rootseparately. F5 states that this customized file is not captured in the UCS archive.
A UCS archive protects configuration; it is not a substitute for a tested rollback volume or an out-of-band recovery path. Keep the archive until post-update acceptance is complete and your retention policy permits deletion.
How to install a BIG-IP security update
1. Inspect images and volumes
In the Configuration utility, go to System > Software Management > Image list and confirm that the imported image is present and verified. From TMSH, use tmsh list sys software image to inspect image records and tmsh show sys software status to identify the active and available volumes.
2. Select or create a new volume set
Select the verified image, choose an unused compatible volume set, and click Install. BIG-IP installs the update to a new location; it cannot install over the active boot location. The existing boot location remains unaffected while the image is copied and configuration is transferred.

3. Monitor the installation
Watch the installation status and system logs for errors. Do not reboot merely because the image appears in the list; wait for the installation to report completion. Confirm that the target volume has enough space and that the intended configuration was copied to it.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
4. Schedule the reboot
Reboot into the new volume only during the approved maintenance window. Confirm the selected boot volume, notify application owners, and ensure console or out-of-band access is available. A reboot can interrupt management and data traffic, and the duration depends on platform, modules, HA behavior, and application recovery time.
5. Preserve the old volume
Do not delete or overwrite the previous volume after the first successful boot. F5’s update process leaves the existing boot location available so you can boot back to the original volume if problems occur. Keep it, along with the UCS archive, until validation and business acceptance are complete.
How to patch an F5 BIG-IP HA pair
Update the standby member first
For a conventional HA pair, update the standby system before touching the active member. Confirm that the pair is synchronized and that the intended standby really is not processing production traffic. Install the image on the standby’s new volume, reboot it, and verify that it returns with the expected version and configuration.
Validate before failing over
Check configuration-sync status, device trust, failover state, interfaces, pools, virtual servers, certificates, monitors, and representative applications on the updated member. Only after those checks pass should you fail over production traffic according to the approved runbook.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Update the former active member
After traffic is stable on the updated member, repeat the image installation and reboot on the remaining device. F5 warns that while a standby system is being updated, the active BIG-IP has no backup; for critical environments, perform the complete operation in a maintenance window rather than treating the standby update as risk-free.
Finish with pair-wide checks
Confirm that both members report the intended build, synchronization is healthy, failover is available, and traffic can move in either direction. Check that no unexpected configuration differences were introduced during the sequential updates.
vCMP host and guest sequencing
vCMP hosts and guests are updated independently. F5 recommends updating the host before its guests and updating only one guest per slot at a time. Inventory every guest’s branch, modules, traffic role, and boot volume before scheduling work. A host reboot can affect multiple guests, so coordinate guest maintenance with the host window and verify guest availability after the host returns.
Do not assume that updating the host automatically patches a guest, or that updating one guest changes the host’s software. Treat each layer as a separate change with its own image verification, backup, reboot, and validation steps.
Post-reboot validation
Use a written acceptance checklist instead of relying on a successful login.

When to roll back
Rollback is appropriate when the device cannot boot normally, critical modules fail to load, HA synchronization cannot be restored, management access is unavailable after recovery attempts, or representative applications fail and the cause cannot be corrected within the window.
Use the previous volume
- Stop application testing and notify stakeholders that rollback criteria have been met.
- Use the console or out-of-band path if the Configuration utility is unavailable.
- Select the previous boot volume using the platform’s software-volume controls and reboot into it.
- Confirm the original version, modules, configuration, HA state, and traffic behavior.
- Preserve logs from the failed volume and retain the UCS archive for vendor or internal analysis.
The volume-based workflow is safer than overwriting the active location because the prior software remains available. Do not remove the failed volume until the incident review identifies the cause and a replacement plan is approved.

How to decide which fix to install
When more than one candidate appears in the download portal, rank them by the following order:
- Exact branch compatibility: choose a release that F5 identifies for the installed branch and platform.
- Security coverage: verify that the advisory’s affected module and CVE are fixed in that release.
- Platform and topology support: confirm appliance, VE, VIPRION, cloud, HA, and vCMP support.
- Operational impact: account for reboot, failover, guest sequencing, and application outage requirements.
- Recovery: require a verified image, UCS archive, old boot volume, console access, and a rollback window.
- Release status: give special attention to releases F5 labels critical or hardened, while still checking branch compatibility.
This process answers “What is the latest BIG-IP hotfix?” without reducing the decision to the largest version number. The safe answer is the latest supported fixed release for the device’s exact branch, build, modules, platform, and topology.
What public release notes cannot tell you
Public notes can identify fixed versions and release severity, but they do not reveal your authenticated MyF5 advisory access, support contract, device inventory, or every condition affecting CVE applicability. The operator must supply those facts. If the inventory is incomplete or the advisory is inaccessible, pause the change and obtain the missing information rather than inferring exposure from the product name alone.
Operational record to retain
Keep a complete change package containing the pre-update version and build, module and topology inventory, advisory and release-note references, image filename and verification result, UCS archive name and storage location, customized cron backup, installation and reboot timestamps, validation results, failover notes, application-owner approval, and the final rollback decision. This record makes the next branch update faster and provides evidence if a vulnerability or service issue is later investigated.
