Start with the embassy’s own foreign-ministry directory, follow its link, and then inspect the complete web address before entering information or paying. HTTPS protects the connection, but it cannot prove that the domain belongs to the embassy you intended to reach.
The checks below are designed for visa applicants, travelers and anyone concerned about imitation government sites, fake visa services or phishing messages.
The reliable verification sequence
Use these checks in order. A convincing logo, flag, seal or professional layout is easy to copy, so visual appearance should come after domain verification, not before it.
- Find the embassy or consulate through the relevant government’s foreign-ministry directory.
- Open the directory link and read the entire address in the browser bar.
- Apply the domain rule for that specific country; do not assume every embassy uses the same suffix.
- Confirm that the connection uses HTTPS, while remembering that HTTPS is not proof of organizational identity.
- Independently verify contact details before sending passport data, credentials, card details or fees.
1. Begin with an official government directory
Type the foreign ministry’s known address yourself, use a bookmark you created from an official source, or reach the ministry through a government publication. Locate its embassy and consulate directory, select the country and city, and follow the listed website link.

For United States missions, the U.S. Department of State’s fraud warning directs visitors to usembassy.gov for links to U.S. embassy and consulate websites. That directory link is a stronger starting point than a result supplied by an unfamiliar message or an advertisement.
Why a search result is not enough
Search engines can place paid advertisements or compromised pages above the result you want. The GSA Office of Inspector General warns that malicious ads can lead to fake sites that imitate official U.S. government pages. Treat search as a way to discover the government’s address, then verify the destination through the government directory before trusting it.
When the embassy has several web addresses
Some missions use a page hosted under a central foreign-ministry domain; others use a dedicated country or city address. A different-looking address is not automatically fraudulent. The decisive question is whether the issuing government’s directory links to it and whether the complete domain matches that link.

After you have reached the ministry and opened the mission page, create your own bookmark for future visits. A bookmark made after verification is safer than repeatedly clicking links in old emails, social-media posts or search advertisements. If the bookmark later redirects to a substantially different domain, stop and repeat the directory check rather than assuming the change is routine.
2. Read the complete domain, not just the page design
Click or tap the address bar and inspect every part of the URL. Identify the registered domain immediately before the final suffix, as well as any subdomain that precedes it. Ignore reassuring words in the path, page title or logo until you have checked the domain itself.
Common impersonation patterns
- A familiar agency name followed by an unrelated ending, such as
gsa-gov.orginstead ofgsa.gov. - A domain that merely contains the word “gov.” The FBI gives
gov.orgas an example of a spoof of the .gov top-level domain. - Misspellings, swapped letters, extra hyphens, added city names or a different country suffix.
- A government name appearing only in a subdomain or in the path while another organization owns the main domain.
- A shortened link or redirected address that hides the final destination.
The FBI’s 2025 alert states: “Repeating top level domains in a URL is a common scam to make a website appear legitimate (e.g., ‘gov.org’ in a URL is a spoof of the .gov top level domain).” Read the full FBI alert if a message or page appears to be impersonating a government service.
Look at the address before following a login or payment button
A page can begin on one domain and send its login form or payment button to another. Before submitting, check the address again after the new page loads. If the destination is not the domain established through the official directory, stop and verify it through an independently obtained telephone number or email address.

Read from right to left
When a URL is confusing, start at the ending and work left. In appointments.example.gov, the relevant registered domain is example.gov; “appointments” is a subdomain. In example.gov.org, the ending is .org, not .gov, even though the string “gov” appears in the middle. A path such as visa.example.com/government does not turn example.com into a government domain.
Do not rely on a lock icon, a copied seal or a familiar phrase in the URL path. Those elements can appear on an impostor page. The directory link and the registered domain must agree.
3. Apply the issuing country’s domain rule narrowly
Suffixes can provide a useful clue only when you know the country’s registration rules. They are not a universal embassy standard.

The U.S. rule is described by CISA’s .Gov guidance. UK wording appears in the UK Home Office fraud guidance. Neither rule should be projected onto every embassy in the world.
Why country context matters
An embassy represents one country but may publish information through that country’s foreign ministry, the host country’s government network or a mission-specific address. A non-.gov address is not automatically fake outside the United States, and a .gov-looking string is not automatically genuine. Let the represented country’s official directory resolve the question instead of applying a rule learned from another jurisdiction.
4. Understand what HTTPS does—and what it cannot do
Look for an HTTPS address and a browser that does not display a certificate or security warning. HTTPS encrypts nearly all information sent between your browser and the web service and authenticates the web service to the connecting client. The federal HTTPS-Only Standard describes those protections.
Those protections answer a transport question: whether the connection to that domain is encrypted and whether the certificate matches that domain. They do not answer the identity question: whether you selected the genuine embassy domain rather than an impostor that also obtained a valid certificate. A fraudulent site can use HTTPS, so pair the browser check with directory confirmation and exact-domain inspection.

What a certificate warning means
If the browser warns that the certificate is expired, mismatched or otherwise invalid, do not bypass the warning to continue. Close the page and return to the government directory. A clean HTTPS connection is necessary for a trustworthy transaction, but it is not sufficient evidence that the organization is the embassy.

HTTPS does not compare a page with the foreign ministry’s directory, validate a visa fee, confirm that an email came from the mission or determine whether a third-party agency is endorsed. It protects data while it travels to the domain you selected. Selecting the right domain remains your responsibility.
5. Verify the request before entering data or paying
Pause whenever a site asks for passport details, a scan of an identity document, an account password, card information or a visa fee. First establish that the site is the one linked by the official directory; then confirm that the requested information and payment method match the government’s published visa or consular instructions.
Warning signs in messages and pages
- Urgency, threats or a demand to act immediately.
- A guaranteed visa, job or appointment.
- Requests for confidential information before you can verify the service.
- Payment through an unusual route, a personal account, gift cards, cryptocurrency or another method not specified in official instructions.
- A fee that differs from the amount or payment channel shown by the embassy or foreign ministry.
The UK guidance identifies urgency, guaranteed outcomes, confidential-information requests and unusual payment routes as scam indicators. The State Department also warns that fake visa services can copy official design, demand payment for services available through official channels and seek personal information. These signs do not mean every fee is fraudulent: verify the amount, recipient and payment page against the relevant government’s current instructions.
Separate required information from excessive information
An official application may legitimately request identity and travel details, but you should still know why the information is needed and where it is being submitted. If a page requests a password for an unrelated service, a payment to a person rather than an identified government channel, or information not mentioned in the official instructions, stop and ask the mission to explain. Do not send a passport scan simply because a page displays a government logo.

Obtain contact details independently
Use the telephone number or email address published in the government directory, not a contact detail supplied only by a suspicious email, text message or webpage. Ask the office whether the site, form and payment request are genuine. Do not rely on caller ID or on an email address merely because it contains the embassy’s name.
6. Distinguish an official embassy site from a legitimate third-party service
A commercial visa agency or travel service can be a real business without being an embassy or being endorsed by a government. The State Department’s fraud warning says nongovernmental sites may be legitimate but are not endorsed by it; information from them should be checked against official sources.

Ask what role the site claims to play. An embassy site explains consular rules, appointments and official fees. A third-party service may charge for assistance, translation or document handling. The distinction should be obvious on the page, and the official government directory should still be your reference for requirements, deadlines, fee amounts and payment instructions.
If you choose to use a commercial service, treat its price as separate from the government fee and confirm that the service is optional. Do not allow an agency’s claim that it can guarantee approval, accelerate a decision or provide privileged access to replace the embassy’s own instructions.
7. Use a decision table when signals conflict
Different checks answer different questions. Do not let one positive signal cancel a failed identity check.

8. A practical checklist for common situations
You received a link by email or text
- Do not open the link to sign in or pay.
- Type the foreign ministry’s address yourself or use a trusted bookmark.
- Locate the mission in the official directory.
- Compare the directory link with the address you received, character by character.
- Report or delete the message if the domains differ, the request is urgent or the payment route is unusual.
You found the page through a search engine
- Check whether the result is an advertisement.
- Open the ministry’s own website rather than relying on the result’s description.
- Follow the embassy-directory link from there.
- Recheck the final domain after any redirect.
The page asks for a fee
- Leave the payment page open only if you need to record its details; do not submit the transaction.
- Find the official fee schedule and payment instructions through the directory-linked site.
- Call or email the mission using independently obtained contact details.
- Pay only through the recipient and method the official instructions identify.
The page asks you to create an account
- Confirm that the account page remains on the verified domain.
- Check that the request is described in the official consular instructions.
- Use a unique password rather than one reused on email, banking or other services.
- Stop if the page redirects to an unrelated domain or asks for credentials that the official instructions do not mention.
9. If you already used a suspected fake site
Act quickly, but use contact details from the legitimate government site rather than from the suspicious page.
- Change the affected password immediately, and change it anywhere else you reused it.
- Contact the legitimate website’s help desk or the embassy’s official consular contact and explain what information you submitted.
- Monitor bank and card accounts for unauthorized transactions; contact the financial institution through the number on your card or statement.
- For a U.S. federal impersonation incident, report it to the responsible agency’s Inspector General and the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center, as recommended by the GSA Office of Inspector General scam alert.
- If the embassy belongs to another country, use that government’s official reporting channel and consular contacts.
Save the suspicious URL, messages, receipts and transaction records for investigators, but do not revisit the page merely to collect more information. If you downloaded an attachment or supplied identity documents, tell the legitimate mission exactly what was disclosed so it can advise you on next steps.
10. Questions to resolve before you trust the page
Before submitting anything, you should be able to answer five simple questions: Which government directory led me here? What is the exact registered domain? Does that domain follow the issuing country’s documented rule? Is the connection free of browser warnings? Who independently confirms that this form, fee and contact channel are genuine?
If you cannot answer even one of these questions, postpone the transaction. A legitimate deadline is a reason to contact the mission promptly through its verified telephone number, not a reason to ignore a domain mismatch or an unusual payment request.

What to remember before trusting an embassy website
- The official directory is your starting proof of where the government sends visitors.
- The complete registered domain matters more than logos, flags, seals or search ranking.
- .gov and .gov.uk are country-specific rules, not a global embassy naming standard.
- HTTPS protects data in transit but cannot identify the organization you intended to visit.
- Unexpected urgency, guaranteed results, confidential-data requests and unusual payment methods deserve independent verification.
- A genuine third-party visa service is still not the embassy; verify its claims, fees and instructions against official sources.
- When in doubt, stop the submission and contact the mission using details obtained from the official directory.

Does HTTPS prove that an embassy website is official?
No. HTTPS encrypts information in transit and authenticates the connection to that domain, but an impostor can also obtain HTTPS. Confirm the domain through the relevant foreign-ministry directory first.
Is every website ending in .gov an embassy website?
