To check a device’s FCC authorization, find its FCC ID and search that identifier in the Federal Communications Commission’s public Equipment Authorization System (EAS). Open the matching certification grant and compare its product description and equipment details with the device in your hands. A failed FCC ID search is not, by itself, proof that the device is unauthorized: qualifying equipment can use the separate Supplier’s Declaration of Conformity (SDoC) route, which is not the same as an FCC ID certification record.

What an FCC authorization check actually tells you

In the United States, equipment authorization is the FCC’s process for addressing technical requirements for radio-frequency (RF) devices and reducing the risk of harmful interference. It is not a general safety inspection, a quality seal, or a guarantee that a product is suitable for every use. The scope depends on the device, the applicable FCC rules, and the authorization pathway used.

FCC order FCC 22-68, released August 5, 2022, describes two broad pathways: certification and Supplier’s Declaration of Conformity. Certification creates an FCC ID record in the Commission’s public database. SDoC is a responsible party’s declaration for qualifying equipment and is a different process. Consequently, an FCC ID lookup is a strong way to verify a certification record, but it does not exhaust every possible form of FCC authorization.

The EAS contains copies of certification applications and grants. The FCC describes that public record as a way for anyone to verify an approved certified device without contacting the Telecommunications Certification Body (TCB) that approved it. The database is therefore the authoritative starting point for an FCC ID check, rather than a retailer listing, a marketplace claim, or a third-party search page.

Certification and SDoC: the two routes you must distinguish

Question Certification Supplier’s Declaration of Conformity (SDoC)
Who evaluates or takes responsibility? An FCC-recognized TCB reviews the application, with FCC Office of Engineering and Technology (OET) oversight. The responsible party makes the conformity declaration for equipment that qualifies for SDoC.
Should an FCC ID certification grant be expected in EAS? Yes. Certification applications and grants are posted in the EAS and identified by an FCC ID. Not necessarily. The cited FCC material distinguishes SDoC from certification and does not establish that every SDoC device appears in the FCC ID database.
What does a lookup prove? It can confirm that a matching certification record exists and let you compare the grant with the device. An empty FCC ID search does not settle SDoC status. You need the responsible party’s compliance information and the applicable FCC requirements.
Typical evidence to request The FCC ID, matching grant, product description, and relevant application exhibits. The supplier’s written declaration and supporting compliance information required for the equipment.

Do not describe an FCC ID as a universal approval number for every electronic product. It identifies certified equipment. The absence of an FCC ID can mean that certification is not the applicable route, that the identifier was copied incorrectly, or that the product is not properly documented; it does not identify which explanation is correct by itself.

Where to find the device’s FCC ID

Start with the physical device and its supplied materials. The identifier may be printed on a regulatory label, shown on packaging, or displayed through an electronic label on the device. There is no single label location for every product, so inspect the places the manufacturer uses for regulatory information.

  • Exterior label: Check the back, underside, battery compartment, removable cover, or another regulatory-marking area. Do not remove a label merely to expose it; record the text and photograph it instead.
  • Packaging and documentation: Look at the box, quick-start material, manual, and compliance page supplied with the device. Packaging can contain an identifier that is hard to see on a small product, but confirm it against the unit itself.
  • Electronic label: Some products present regulatory information in firmware. Use the device’s regulatory-information or about screen as directed by its manual. Record the FCC ID exactly as displayed, including letters, numbers, punctuation, and capitalization.
  • Separate radio module: A host product may contain an authorized transmitter module. A module’s FCC ID can be relevant, but you still need to determine whether the host’s installation and operating conditions match the grant and any host-labeling requirements.

Write the identifier down or take a clear photo before searching. A single misread character can produce no result or lead to an unrelated grant.

How to search the FCC Equipment Authorization System

The FCC’s EAS is the public database for certification applications and grants. The FCC’s API documentation for publication 953436, dated October 23, 2023, describes a getFCCIDList service that accepts a complete or partial FCC ID and returns matching approved FCC IDs. The public lookup is useful for a one-off check; the API description is useful when a compliance team needs to search identifiers programmatically.

  1. Open the FCC’s current equipment-authorization resource. Use the Commission’s official EAS entry point rather than a copied database mirror. Interface labels can change, so follow the current page’s search controls instead of relying on an old screenshot.
  2. Enter the FCC ID. Begin with the complete identifier exactly as printed. If the system supports partial searching, use a distinctive portion when a character is uncertain or when you are checking related records. A partial match is a list of candidates, not proof that any one candidate belongs to your device.
  3. Review the returned records. Open the candidate grant and note the FCC ID, applicant or grantee information, product description, equipment type, and any other identifying details shown in the record.
  4. Compare the record to the physical device. Check the model or product description, radio functions, frequency or operating information presented in the grant, and the manufacturer or responsible party. The comparison must make sense as a whole; an exact brand-name match is not the only test.
  5. Save evidence. Keep the grant’s record information with photographs of the label, model number, serial or batch information, purchase documentation, and the date you performed the search. This is useful if a seller, importer, installer, or regulator later asks how you verified the product.

The available FCC material does not establish a permanent set of consumer-facing button names or a fixed click-by-click screen sequence. The important, durable action is to use the official EAS, search the FCC ID, open the certification record, and compare it with the device.

How to decide whether the result matches your device

Check the identifier before the brand name

The FCC ID in the grant should correspond to the identifier on the product or its electronic label. If one character differs, stop and recheck the label, image quality, and transcription. Characters such as zero and the letter O can be difficult to distinguish, as can one and the letter I.

Read the product description and equipment details

A matching identifier is necessary but not sufficient for a careful check. Compare the grant’s product description and relevant equipment details with the actual device. A grant for a wireless module may not describe every finished product in which that module is installed. Conversely, a finished product may have more than one radio function or authorization record.

Allow for different trade names

FCC KDB publication 726885, dated February 25, 2008, discusses identical products marketed under different trade names while retaining the same FCC ID. Therefore, a brand-name mismatch alone does not establish that a grant is unrelated. Use the grant’s technical and product information, model relationships, and labeling context to determine whether the record fits.

That older KDB entry addresses labeling under 47 CFR sections 2.924–2.926. Treat it as narrow staff guidance about the situation it discusses, and consult current FCC rules for current labeling obligations rather than assuming an old example answers every modern labeling question.

What a “no result” or conflicting result means

An empty search is a prompt for investigation, not a final verdict. Work through the possibilities in this order:

  • Transcription error: Reinspect the label or electronic display and search a shorter, distinctive portion if the system permits partial IDs.
  • Wrong identifier: A model number, serial number, Bluetooth name, or certification mark may have been mistaken for an FCC ID. Search only the identifier explicitly presented as the FCC ID.
  • Different authorization pathway: Determine whether the equipment is one of the products that may use SDoC rather than certification. The FCC’s framework treats SDoC and certification as distinct routes, and the cited material does not say that every SDoC device is listed in the FCC ID database.
  • Related or rebranded product: Compare the grant’s product description and technical details. Identical products can be sold under different trade names while sharing an FCC ID.
  • Incomplete seller information: Ask the seller, importer, manufacturer, or other responsible party for the applicable compliance information and the authorization pathway used.
  • Potential noncompliance: If the responsible party cannot explain the missing or conflicting information, preserve the evidence and seek advice from the relevant regulator or a qualified compliance professional before importing, deploying, or reselling the equipment.

Do not tell a buyer that “not found” proves the device is illegal. The evidence supports a certification lookup and a pathway distinction, not a universal negative conclusion from a failed search.

Special cases that commonly cause confusion

Devices with several wireless radios

A phone, computer, router, wearable, or other connected product may contain multiple transmitters. One FCC ID record may not describe every radio or every configuration. Compare the device’s regulatory information and the grant details for the functions you are evaluating; do not assume that one visible identifier answers every radio question.

Products sold under a private label

A retailer’s or distributor’s name may differ from the applicant or grantee shown in EAS. That difference is not automatically a mismatch. Use the product description, model relationship, and technical information, and ask the responsible party to explain the branding if the connection is unclear.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Radio modules installed in another host

A certified module can be placed into a host device only under the conditions covered by the authorization and applicable installation and labeling requirements. A module’s grant is evidence about that module, not an automatic authorization for every host design.

Imported equipment

FCC KDB publication 997198, dated July 20, 2022, directs readers to FCC importation guidance for identifying goods that require authorization. An EAS lookup remains useful for certification records, but importers should also follow the current importation requirements applicable to the goods and their authorization pathway.

What FCC authorization does—and does not—mean

It addresses RF compliance and interference

The FCC describes equipment authorization as a way to help ensure that RF devices meet technical requirements and operate without causing harmful interference. A certification grant therefore answers a focused regulatory question about the covered equipment and its conditions of operation.

It is not a broad product endorsement

An FCC authorization check does not establish that a device is safe in every respect, well made, secure against cyberattacks, energy efficient, compatible with your network, or suitable for a particular environment. Those questions may involve other laws, standards, testing, or professional judgment. Keep the conclusion limited to what the FCC record supports.

Guidance is not the same as a rule

The FCC’s KDB landing-page statement says that staff guidance is intended to assist the public in following Commission requirements and does not constitute rules; it also says the guidance is not binding on the Commission. Use KDB publications to understand FCC staff explanations, but do not present a KDB page as an independent legal requirement.

A repeatable checklist for buyers and compliance teams

  1. Identify the exact device, model, hardware revision, and radio functions being checked.
  2. Photograph or transcribe the regulatory label, packaging information, and electronic-label display.
  3. Locate the FCC ID, if one is provided, and verify each character.
  4. Search the FCC EAS using the complete ID; use a partial search only as a way to find candidates.
  5. Open the certification grant and record the applicant or grantee, product description, and relevant equipment details.
  6. Compare the grant with the physical device, including model relationships, radio functions, and trade-name differences.
  7. If no suitable grant appears, recheck the identifier and investigate whether SDoC is the applicable route.
  8. Request the responsible party’s documentation when the pathway or product relationship is unclear.
  9. For imports or commercial deployment, check the current FCC importation and labeling requirements in addition to the database record.
  10. Save the search date, record details, label photographs, and correspondence so another person can reproduce the check.

When to escalate the question

Escalate to a qualified compliance professional or the appropriate FCC contact when the device will be imported at scale, marketed under a new name, installed in a host product, modified from the configuration described in the grant, or deployed where interference could have serious consequences. Escalation is also appropriate when a seller supplies contradictory FCC IDs, when a grant’s product description does not fit the hardware, or when you need to determine whether SDoC documentation is complete.

For a simple consumer check, the practical result is narrower: a matching EAS certification grant that fits the device is evidence of FCC certification for the covered equipment; an absent or conflicting result means you should verify the identifier and authorization pathway before drawing a conclusion.
