Do not share an election claim until you have checked both the underlying fact and the media’s context. Find the original post, verify the assertion with the election authority responsible for that jurisdiction, and use reverse image search to investigate where a picture appeared before. These checks answer different questions: an official source can establish whether a voting rule, deadline, polling-place notice, or result update is accurate, while image searching can reveal that a genuine photograph is old, from another country, or captioned incorrectly.

The procedure below applies most directly to U.S. elections. Outside the United States, replace U.S. agencies with your national, regional, or local election authority. A realistic appearance, a large number of reposts, or an urgent caption is not authentication. The same method works for text, photographs, video thumbnails, recordings, and screenshots.

Use this verification sequence before you trust or share anything

  1. Pause. If a post is designed to make you angry, frightened, or triumphant, treat that emotional pressure as a reason to check it, not as evidence that it is false. The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) advises people to think twice before sharing election content. Urgency can be a persuasion tactic; it is not a substitute for a source.
  2. Preserve the item. Save the post or image, copy its text, and note the account, timestamp, caption, and links. If it is a video or audio clip, record the exact wording and where it was posted. A screenshot or repost can remove the original date and surrounding context, so keep the version you actually saw while you investigate.
  3. Find the original source. Determine who first published the claim and whether the account or website is really the organization it names. Look for a linked document, announcement, or data source rather than treating a cropped screenshot as the source. Check whether the post is quoting someone else, and follow the chain to the earliest attributable statement.
  4. Identify the responsible election authority. For a registration rule, voting method, deadline, polling location, ballot-counting procedure, or local incident, go to the official election office for the state, territory, county, municipality, or national jurisdiction involved. The smaller authority that runs the election usually has more relevant information than a general national page.
  5. Check the image’s history. Run the picture through a reverse image search. Open the oldest or most authoritative matches, then compare their dates, locations, captions, and event descriptions with the current post. If the post contains a video still, search several clear frames; if it contains a collage, check each panel separately.
  6. Inspect the web address independently. Read the domain and spelling carefully. Instead of trusting a link embedded in a viral post, navigate to the organization’s official website yourself and locate the same announcement there. A familiar logo, color scheme, or copied screenshot can appear on an impostor page.
  7. Look for independent corroboration. Search for confirmation from the responsible authority or multiple reputable outlets that identify their sources. Several accounts repeating identical wording may all be copying one unsourced post, so repetition is not independence. Lack of an immediate official post is not proof that a claim is false, but it means the claim remains unverified.
  8. Recheck before sharing. Record what is established, what is only alleged, and what the evidence cannot show. If the essential details remain unresolved, do not present the item as fact. A precise update such as “the image is genuine but from an earlier election” is more useful than a blanket true-or-false label.

Why the original publisher and date matter

A photograph can be genuine while the caption is deceptive. An old picture of a queue may be relabeled as a current polling-place problem; a screenshot can omit a correction posted later; and a parody account can be mistaken for an official one. Check the account’s history, profile, spelling, verification information where available, and links to primary documents. A repost should be treated as a pointer to an investigation, not as proof of provenance.

Open the earliest credible version you can find and read the surrounding text. Compare the image, caption, date, and claimed location. If the original publisher cannot be found, say that the origin is unconfirmed rather than assigning the image a new date or event. Be careful with dates displayed by platforms: a post may show the date it was reshared, not the date the photograph was taken.

For a text claim, separate the exact assertion into smaller parts. “The polling place moved” has a location, an election, a date, and a responsible office. “The count stopped” requires knowing which contest, what counting stage, and whether the authority announced a pause. Checking each component prevents a true detail from being used to support a broader, unsupported conclusion.

Verify voting information with the authority that runs the election

For U.S. elections, state and local election offices are the most relevant sources for jurisdiction-specific information. The U.S. Election Assistance Commission (EAC) provides guidance and links but does not regulate elections; each state has a chief election official. A national page may explain general concepts without answering a county’s polling-place change or a state’s ballot deadline.

Use the authority that administers the particular contest. A federal election still has state and local administration, and a municipal election may have no useful answer on a national site. When an official page links to another office, follow that chain and make sure the destination covers the same jurisdiction and election date.

Procedures, deadlines, and polling places

Check the official election site for the exact jurisdiction named in the post. Confirm the election date, registration and ballot-return deadlines, identification rules, early-voting schedule, polling-place address, accessibility information, and contact details. Save the page and note when it was last updated, because local instructions can change. A page that describes a past election should not be used to settle a current deadline without checking its date.

Match the wording carefully. “Postmarked by” and “received by” describe different deadlines, and “early voting” is not the same as election-day voting. Do not fill gaps from memory or from a neighboring state’s instructions. If the official site offers a polling-place lookup, enter the voter’s actual address rather than relying on a location listed in a viral graphic.

Claims about a local incident

Look for a statement from the election office, law-enforcement agency, or other authority responsible for the incident. Distinguish a confirmed interruption from an allegation, and distinguish a temporary operational problem from a claim that votes were changed. A post that supplies no place, time, or identifiable source cannot be checked reliably until those details are established.

Check whether the statement describes what happened, what is being done, and whether voting or counting continued. An announcement about a delayed opening does not automatically establish a broader failure, and a report of a single equipment problem does not establish that results were altered. Preserve the authority’s wording and time stamp so later updates are not confused with the initial report.

Claims that a rule applies everywhere

Do not generalize one state’s process to another. Election administration is jurisdiction-specific, so a true statement about one state, county, or country may be wrong when presented as a universal rule. The same caution applies across election types: a primary, general election, referendum, and local contest can have different dates and procedures.

How to use reverse image search correctly

Reverse image search helps locate earlier appearances of the same or a visually similar image. It is a provenance and context check, not a truth machine. It can show that a picture predates the claimed event, but it cannot by itself prove what happened at the location described in a new caption.

  1. Upload the original file when possible instead of a screenshot with added text. If you only have a screenshot, crop away captions, borders, and interface elements and try more than one crop.
  2. Review matches in date order and open the pages, not just the thumbnail results. A search result’s date may reflect an update or indexing event, so read the page itself.
  3. Read the earliest credible page’s caption, location, event date, photographer or organization, and surrounding story. Prefer a page that identifies its source over an unattributed repost.
  4. Compare distinctive details such as signs, weather, architecture, uniforms, or visible language with the post’s claimed location and time. These details can reveal a different country, city, or event.
  5. Check whether the current post has altered the image, reversed it, cropped out context, or combined it with a new caption. Search an uncropped portion if the original has been heavily edited.
  6. Save the relevant match and its URL so another reader can reproduce the check. If no useful match appears, report that the image could not be traced; absence of a match is not proof that it is new or authentic.

The Government of Canada’s election-disinformation guidance recommends reverse image search to test whether an image is related to the story. A match is a lead: search results can be incomplete, and a similar image does not by itself establish that the current claim is true or false. Treat an image as unconfirmed when you cannot establish its date, place, and original caption.

Check video, audio, and screenshots as claims, not just files

A video or audio clip may be authentic media presented with a false date, location, or speaker. Start with the same provenance questions used for a photograph: who posted it, when, and what source is cited? Search a distinctive frame or phrase, and compare the full context if an earlier version is found. A short excerpt can remove a qualification or make an old statement appear current.

For screenshots of official notices, locate the notice on the organization’s independently reached website. Compare the exact wording, publication date, contact information, and any document or update details visible in the screenshot. If the notice cannot be found, do not infer that it is genuine from typography or a logo alone.

Recognize synthetic or impersonated election content

Artificial intelligence can imitate officials in text, images, video, and audio. Realistic rendering is therefore not evidence of authenticity. The EAC’s AI materials warn that generated voter information can look plausible while being inaccurate. Its August 2023 AI Toolkit for Election Officials uses a hypothetical image of unusually long polling-place lines as an example of a possible synthetic influence tactic; it does not establish how common such images are.

Signals that should trigger extra checking

  • An official-looking announcement appears only as a screenshot or on an unfamiliar domain.
  • A voice, face, or writing style seems subtly inconsistent, but the content is being circulated as an urgent instruction.
  • Text in an image contains warped lettering, contradictory signs, impossible reflections, or details that change between frames.
  • The post provides no independently verifiable date, location, document number, or contact point.
  • A supposedly official instruction conflicts with the election office’s current instructions, even if the design looks professional.

These signals are prompts to verify, not proof that media is AI-generated. Use the relevant election authority to check the instruction itself. An authentic official account can be hacked or impersonated, and a synthetic-looking artifact can still be a harmless illustration; provenance and authoritative confirmation matter more than visual intuition.

Do not rely on a single automated detector or on confidence from visual inspection. The practical question is whether the voting information can be confirmed through the responsible authority and whether the media’s date, place, and source fit the claim.

Claims about counting, audits, and election results

Counting timelines and procedures vary by jurisdiction. A delay alone does not establish misconduct. The EAC describes testing and audit procedures in general terms and directs readers to the state or territory election site for local information.

  1. Identify which contest and jurisdiction the post concerns.
  2. Read the election authority’s current results page and explanations of outstanding ballots, canvassing, recounts, or certification.
  3. Check whether the reported number is unofficial, updated, canvassed, audited, or certified.
  4. Look for the authority’s description of equipment testing, post-election audits, and any legally required review.
  5. Compare the post’s claim with the authority’s timestamp and reporting method. Do not compare a live unofficial tally with a certified result as though they were the same stage.
  6. Check whether the post is discussing a projection, a partial return, or a final certified result. Those labels describe different points in the process.

General descriptions of election testing cannot answer whether a particular local allegation is true. Use the authority responsible for that election and preserve the exact update you consulted. If the page has changed, note the earlier wording and the newer update rather than treating a later correction as proof that the original event never occurred.

Two checks that answer different questions

Check What it can establish Best use Limitations
Official-source verification Whether a stated procedure, deadline, polling-place notice, incident update, or results status is confirmed by the responsible authority. Rules, logistics, disruptions, counting, audits, and certification. An official page may not address a newly viral post immediately; jurisdictions differ, and a general national page may not cover local details.
Reverse image search and provenance review Where an image appeared previously and whether its earlier date, place, and caption fit the current story. Reused photographs, misleading captions, old footage thumbnails, and cropped screenshots. Search results can miss the original, return similar images, or fail to prove that a current claim is true or false.
Independent corroboration Whether separate sources report the same event with identifiable evidence. Breaking incidents and claims not yet reflected on an official page. Many repetitions can trace back to one unsourced post; quantity of reposts is not independence.

Use the checks together when a post contains both a factual assertion and media. For example, an official page may confirm that voting hours changed, while reverse search determines whether the accompanying photograph actually shows that location. Neither check replaces the other: an old image can accompany a true current notice, and a current image can accompany a false claim.

Common traps and how to resolve them

“It has been reposted thousands of times.”

Virality shows distribution, not accuracy. Trace the earliest available version and demand an attributable source. Count the number of independent accounts and documents, not the number of copies of one post.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The image search found the same picture.”

Open the matching page and establish its date, place, and caption. A visual match without that context does not authenticate the current story. It may instead show that the picture was reused.

“The official site does not mention it, so it never happened.”

Absence of an immediate statement is not conclusive, especially during a fast-moving incident. Check the site’s update time, contact the office if appropriate, and look for corroboration while labeling the claim unconfirmed.

“The count is taking longer than expected.”

Jurisdictions use different counting and certification schedules. Consult the local authority’s explanation rather than inferring misconduct from delay alone. Ask what stage the count has reached and whether the reported figure is unofficial or certified.

“The account has an official logo.”

Geography, dates, and source limits

The principal CISA, FBI/CISA, and EAC guidance concerns U.S. elections. The FBI/CISA public-service advisory addresses the 2024 election cycle, so it describes a historical risk and verification approach rather than proving a current incident. The EAC AI resource page is dated June 3, 2026, and the AI Toolkit example dates to August 2023. The Government of Canada guidance is useful for general image-checking habits, not for determining U.S. election rules.

When checking an election outside the United States, use that country’s election commission and the regional authority that administers the specific contest. Keep the jurisdiction, election date, and publication date attached to every conclusion. A general media-literacy tip can travel across borders; a deadline, polling location, counting rule, or audit description usually cannot.

Cost, tools, and practical limits

You do not need a specialized device or paid service to follow this method. A phone or computer can preserve the post, open the responsible authority’s website, and submit an image to a reverse-search service. The important safeguards are independent navigation, careful comparison, and recording the source and date. Do not treat a paid result, a polished interface, or a high number of matches as proof.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Official pages may not answer a newly viral question immediately, and reverse search may not find an original file. Those are limits to report honestly, not reasons to guess. If the evidence is incomplete, use “unverified,” explain what was checked, and return to the authority’s current update later.

A decision checklist before you share

  • Do I know who first published this and when?
  • Can I identify the exact jurisdiction, event, and date?
  • Did I verify the factual claim on the responsible election authority’s site?
  • Did I inspect the original image, video, or audio context with reverse search or source comparison?
  • Did I navigate to official sites independently rather than trust an embedded link?
  • Have I checked for synthetic-media or impersonation cues without treating them as proof?
  • For results, do I know whether the number is unofficial, canvassed, audited, or certified?
  • Can I state precisely what remains unknown?

If any answer is no, the responsible description is “unverified,” not “confirmed.” Share the official correction or context when one exists, and preserve the original wording so others can see exactly what was checked.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a real election photo proof that the caption is true?

No. A genuine photograph can be old, taken in another place, or paired with a misleading caption. Use reverse image search to inspect earlier appearances, then compare the date, location, and original caption with the current claim.

Where should I verify a voting deadline or polling-place claim?

Use the official election office responsible for that state, county, municipality, territory, or country. The EAC provides general guidance and links but does not regulate elections; local and state authorities have the jurisdiction-specific information.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does an official-looking logo or screenshot authenticate a notice?

No. Logos and screenshots can be copied or altered. Navigate independently to the organization’s known website and locate the same notice, checking its wording, date, and contact details.

What if reverse image search finds no match?

A missing match does not prove that an image is authentic or newly created. Record that the image could not be traced, verify the accompanying factual claim with the responsible authority, and label the media unconfirmed if its date and place remain unknown.

Is a slow vote count evidence of wrongdoing?

Not by itself. Counting and certification schedules vary by jurisdiction. Read the current official results page for explanations of outstanding ballots, canvassing, audits, recounts, and certification before drawing a conclusion.

How can I check a suspected AI election image, video, or audio clip?

Treat visual or audio oddities as prompts to investigate, not as proof. Check the original source and date, search distinctive frames or wording, and verify the underlying instruction or event with the responsible election authority. Realistic appearance alone is not authentication.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Check two things separately: verify the factual assertion with the election authority that runs the relevant jurisdiction, and investigate the media’s original date, place, and caption through source comparison and reverse image search. If either side remains unresolved, call the item unverified and do not share it as fact.
