Ignore the size of the markdown until you verify the exact item’s price and terms. Match the model and condition, compare the total checkout cost with other sellers and any available price history, and read the delivery and return rules. A countdown or “only a few left” warning is a reason to slow down—not proof that a deal is fake or worth buying.
Use this checklist before you buy
- Match the exact product. Compare the manufacturer or model number and configuration, including size and color. Check whether the listing is for a new item or describes it as refurbished, vintage, or close-out. A lower price for a different configuration or condition is not an apples-to-apples discount. The Federal Trade Commission’s online-shopping guidance recommends checking these details.
- Compare the price beyond the sale label. Look at the same item from other trustworthy sellers and, where available, consult a reputable price-history or price-alert tool. Comparison sites can help, but their listings may be limited to sellers that pay them or influenced by manufacturer promotions, so check how a site ranks offers.
- Calculate the full checkout total. Include shipping, handling, delivery charges, taxes, and any other fees. Check whether the advertised price requires buying another product or a bundle. Do not judge the offer by its pre-checkout price alone.
- Read delivery, restrictions, and returns. Confirm the promised delivery date and the refund or return policy. Look for the return window, who pays return shipping, restocking fees, and any different rules for sale items.
- Check the seller and payment method. Research an unfamiliar seller before paying. An unusually low price on an expensive brand-name item can be a warning sign of counterfeit or stolen goods. HTTPS alone does not prove a site is legitimate; be cautious if a seller insists on a payment method that is hard to recover if something goes wrong.
- Keep proof of the transaction. Save the order details and receipt, and check the scanned price at checkout if you are shopping in person. The FTC’s holiday-shopping advice recommends keeping receipts and online order information.
Red flags that deserve a closer look
Unclear reference prices
A large percentage-off claim is not enough to establish value. Look for an explanation of the original or comparison price, then check the item’s price at other sellers. If the reference price is unexplained or the same item is routinely available for less elsewhere, the markdown may not represent a meaningful saving.
Countdowns and scarcity claims
Timers and low-stock messages are pressure tactics, not evidence that the price is unusually good or that the offer will disappear. Pause and compare the item and total cost without letting the warning rush the decision.
Unwanted items added to the basket
Review the cart before paying. Check that every item is one you chose and that the total has not changed because of an optional add-on or bundle.

Fees revealed late
Inspect the order summary before submitting payment. A low advertised price can be offset by shipping, service, or other charges added near checkout.
What recent EU checks found—and what they do not prove
In a coordinated 2026 sweep involving authorities from 23 EU countries, Iceland, and Norway, the European Commission reported that 30% of the 314 online traders checked referenced discounts incorrectly. In the EU, discount reference prices must be based on the lowest price applied in the preceding 30 days. These figures describe the traders in that specific sweep, not all retailers or every holiday sale. See the European Commission’s 26 March 2026 summary.

The same sweep reported that 36% of traders attempted to add optional items to consumers’ baskets; among those, 40% did so without clearly requesting consent. It also found that 34% displayed price comparisons, and 60% of those did not clearly explain the source of the reference prices. Pressure-selling techniques appeared at 18% of traders checked; more than half of those cases were misleading. Ten percent used drip pricing, meaning extra fees such as shipping or service charges appeared late in the purchase process. These are findings from the sweep, not estimates for all online shops.
Legal context: US and EU rules are not interchangeable
In the United States, the FTC says, “The same standards for truthfulness apply when companies make claims about price comparisons, ‘sale’ prices, and the like.” Its guidance addresses US advertising standards; applicable rules can vary by jurisdiction. Read the FTC’s advertising FAQ.

The EU has a specific rule for announced price reductions: the reference price must be the lowest price applied during the previous 30 days. The European Commission summarized that requirement in its 2026 sweep findings. Do not treat the EU’s 30-day rule as a universal US requirement; check the rules that apply where you are shopping.

There is no reliable way to predict the future price of an unspecified product from these checks alone. Compare the exact item’s available price history and competing offers, calculate today’s full cost, and decide whether the delivery and return terms work for you. Buy only if the current total price is acceptable without relying on a countdown or percentage-off label to make the decision.
