Read the exact offer label and then open its full terms. “With eligible trade-in” signals a trade-in condition. “Requires new line” or “new lines only” signals that adding service is required. “No trade-in required” removes only the trade-in condition; it does not automatically waive a new-line requirement, an eligible-plan rule, an installment agreement, or other restrictions. AT&T says offers vary by device and restrictions apply, so verify the selected phone’s terms at checkout before accepting the deal.

The short answer: trade-in and new-line rules are separate

An AT&T promotion can require a trade-in, a new line, both, or neither. Do not treat those conditions as interchangeable:

  • Trade-in condition: You must turn in an eligible phone or other device, often meeting model, condition, value, and deadline rules.
  • New-line condition: You must activate an additional line or otherwise satisfy the offer’s definition of a new line. An upgrade on an existing line may not qualify.
  • Plan and financing conditions: The offer may require a particular wireless plan, an installment agreement, credit approval, or another account requirement even when no trade-in is needed.

For that reason, the phrase no trade-in required is not the same as no conditions required. AT&T’s add-a-line offers include examples where a phone does not require a trade-in but still requires a new line. Conversely, an offer mentioning an eligible trade-in may be available only on specified lines or plans. The device card and its detailed terms must be read together.

Label or wording What it tells you What it does not establish
“With eligible trade-in” A qualifying device must be traded in for the advertised promotion. That every phone qualifies, that any condition is accepted, or that a new line is unnecessary.
“Requires new line” The stated line condition must be met; an existing-line upgrade alone may not qualify. Whether a trade-in is also required, which plan qualifies, or how long credits continue.
“New lines only” The offer is restricted to new lines under the offer’s definition. Whether the line must be a completely new account, whether a trade-in is needed, or whether other plan rules apply.
“No trade-in required” You do not have to surrender a device to meet the trade-in condition. That the offer works on an existing line, has no plan requirement, or has no installment and credit conditions.
No clear label on the card The card alone is insufficient to determine eligibility. Do not infer “no trade-in” or “existing-line eligible” from silence; open the terms or ask AT&T to confirm.

More than one label can apply to the same phone. For example, an offer can require a new line and an eligible trade-in while also requiring a qualifying plan and installment billing.

Step-by-step: check the exact phone offer

  1. Open AT&T’s current phone-deals or trade-in-deals page. Search for the specific model and storage version you intend to purchase. Do not use the requirements shown on another phone’s card: AT&T states that offers vary by device.
  2. Record the offer wording before clicking. Note whether the card says “with eligible trade-in,” “requires new line,” “new lines only,” “no trade-in required,” or combines several of those phrases. Save a screenshot or copy the wording if you are comparing offers, because promotions can change.
  3. Select “See offer details” or the equivalent details link. The expanded terms are where AT&T can specify eligible trade-in models, minimum value or condition, qualifying plans, installment length, bill-credit timing, and deadlines.
  4. Check the line status that the offer accepts. Look for wording such as new line, additional line, upgrade, existing line, or port-in. If the terms say “new lines only” or “requires new line,” assume an upgrade on your current line does not satisfy that condition unless the terms explicitly say otherwise.
  5. Check the trade-in rule separately. Confirm the device list, required value or condition, whether a damaged device is excluded, and when AT&T must receive the trade-in. “Eligible” never means every phone qualifies.
  6. Identify the required service plan. The advertised device price may depend on a particular plan or account type. A no-trade-in promotion can still be limited to an eligible plan.
  7. Read the payment and credit language. Find the full retail price, installment term, monthly installment, expected monthly bill credits, and when credits begin. Determine whether the low advertised amount is a recurring credit rather than an instant discount.
  8. Read the loss-of-credit conditions. AT&T terms can state that credits stop if service is canceled, the device is paid off early, or an upgrade occurs. Check the selected offer rather than relying on a general assumption.
  9. Verify the result in your account at checkout. Enter the line, plan, trade-in, and financing information and confirm that the order summary still shows the advertised eligibility. Public pages cannot establish your account’s location, plan, financing approval, or other account-specific status.

How to determine whether a trade-in is really required

Look for an explicit trade-in condition

“With eligible trade-in” is the clearest signal that a trade-in is part of the offer. The detailed terms can define a minimum trade-in value, eligible models, acceptable condition, and a deadline for completing the trade-in. A phone that is too old, damaged, locked, or below the stated value may not earn the promotion, even if the model appears on a general trade-in page.

Do not confuse trade-in value with promotional eligibility

AT&T’s trade-in program can provide credit for the value of a device or as part of a device offer. Those are different outcomes. A basic trade-in quote does not by itself prove that the device meets a particular promotional threshold. Use the offer’s own eligibility list and terms.

Understand what “no trade-in required” removes

This wording removes the requirement to surrender a device. It does not remove a new-line requirement, a qualifying-plan requirement, credit approval, installment billing, or the possibility that credits end after cancellation or early payoff. Check each remaining condition in the same offer.

How to determine whether a new line is required

“New lines only” and “requires new line” are decisive signals

These labels mean the offer’s line condition is not met by simply upgrading a phone on an existing line, unless the detailed terms expressly include upgrades. A new line may mean an additional line on an existing account, a new activation, or another defined transaction; use AT&T’s wording rather than guessing.

“Add a line” offers can be no-trade-in offers

AT&T’s add-a-line page shows examples in which no trade-in is required. Those examples still illustrate why the line condition matters: you may avoid sending in a device but need to activate an additional eligible line and satisfy the plan and installment rules.

Existing-line upgrades need their own confirmation

If you want to replace a phone on a current line without adding service, look for an explicit upgrade or existing-line statement. If the card only says “no trade-in required,” that is not enough to conclude that an upgrade qualifies.

Check the terms beyond trade-in and line status

Term to inspect Question to answer before ordering Why it can change the outcome
Eligible device Which model, storage version, condition, and value are accepted? An ineligible or lower-value device may remove the promotional credits.
Trade-in deadline By what date must the trade-in be completed or received? Missing the deadline can prevent credits even after an otherwise qualifying purchase.
Line type Is the offer for a new line, additional line, port-in, upgrade, or a combination? An existing line may not satisfy a new-line-only condition.
Plan Which plan or account feature is required? Changing to an ineligible plan can make the offer unavailable or end credits.
Installment agreement What is the installment term and monthly device charge? The advertised price may assume you keep the agreement for its full term.
Bill credits How much is credited each month, when does it start, and how long does it last? A low net price may be spread over many monthly credits rather than applied immediately.
Cancellation or payoff What happens if service is canceled, the phone is paid off, or you upgrade early? Terms can stop future credits under those events, leaving the remaining balance due.
Account and financing eligibility Does your account, location, credit decision, or transaction pass the stated requirements? Public offer pages cannot guarantee an individual customer’s result.

How AT&T’s advertised monthly price can mislead comparisons

Many phone promotions display a low monthly figure calculated after monthly bill credits over an installment agreement. Compare the underlying amounts, not only the net figure shown in a headline.

  1. Find the full retail price. This is the amount being financed before promotional credits.
  2. Find the installment term. Note the number of months and the regular installment amount.
  3. Find the credit schedule. Verify the monthly credit, when it begins, and whether it is applied over the entire term.
  4. Calculate the non-credit cost. Consider what you would owe if credits stop after cancellation, an early payoff, or an upgrade.
  5. Add required service costs. A new-line or plan requirement can cost more than the phone payment and may be the largest part of the decision.

Do not treat a credit-based price as an instant discount. The selected offer’s terms control, and AT&T says credits may stop in specified circumstances. The exact conditions vary by promotion.

Examples of how the conditions combine

Offer wording pattern Likely conditions to verify What you should not assume
“With eligible trade-in” Trade-in model/value, condition, deadline, plan, installment, and whether the line can be an upgrade. That your current phone qualifies or that no new line is needed.
“With eligible trade-in; new lines only” Both a qualifying trade-in and a qualifying new line, plus plan and credit terms. That completing only one of the two conditions earns the advertised price.
“No trade-in required; requires new line” Additional-line or activation rules, plan eligibility, installment term, and bill-credit duration. That an existing-line upgrade qualifies because no device is requested.
“No trade-in required” with no line wording Open the full terms to determine whether upgrades, new lines, or both are accepted. That the offer is available to every existing customer.
Offer card with no requirement visible Use “See offer details,” then confirm the order summary at checkout. That an omitted condition does not exist.

What to do when the page and checkout appear to disagree

The card says “no trade-in,” but checkout requests a line

This can be consistent: the promotion may waive trade-in while requiring a new line. Reopen the details and look for “new lines only,” “add a line,” or an activation condition. If the checkout still does not match the written terms, ask AT&T to identify which exact offer code or terms apply before submitting the order.

The card mentions a trade-in, but your device is not accepted

Check the offer-specific device list, condition rules, and minimum value. A general trade-in estimate is not proof of promotional eligibility. If your device fails the offer’s criteria, ask whether another promotion or the standard trade-in value applies; do not assume the advertised credits will remain.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The net monthly price disappears after changing the plan

That usually indicates a plan-dependent credit. Return to the terms and verify the qualifying plan. Changing plans, canceling service, paying off the phone, or upgrading early can affect future credits when the offer says so.

The offer is unavailable to your account

Public listings cannot determine your financing approval, account status, location, or current plan. Confirm those factors with AT&T and ask for the reason in writing or in the order details. Do not rely on a screenshot from a different account or device configuration.

A practical decision checklist before you commit

  • Have you selected the exact model and storage version rather than relying on a different phone’s deal?
  • Does the label require an eligible trade-in, a new line, both, or neither?
  • If a trade-in is required, does your specific device meet the model, condition, and value rules?
  • If a new line is required, are you activating an eligible additional line rather than upgrading an existing line?
  • Is your current or selected plan listed as eligible?
  • What is the full retail price, installment term, and monthly installment before credits?
  • How much are the monthly credits, when do they start, and when do they end?
  • What happens to credits if you cancel service, pay off the phone, change plans, or upgrade early?
  • What is the trade-in completion or delivery deadline?
  • Does the final checkout summary show the same conditions and credits as the offer page?

If the promotion does not fit your situation

If you do not want to add a line, do not have an eligible trade-in, or do not want to remain tied to a credit schedule, compare the phone’s full-price installment or an unlocked smartphone purchased separately. An unlocked phone can avoid a carrier promotion’s new-line and trade-in conditions, but it will not reproduce AT&T’s promotional credits. Compare the total device cost, service requirements, financing terms, and flexibility rather than the headline monthly number alone.

Why you should re-check the offer on the day you buy

AT&T’s wireless deals page states that offers vary by device and that restrictions may apply. Device promotions, eligibility thresholds, deadlines, plans, and credit rules can change. A result seen earlier—or on another model—does not establish the terms available at your checkout. The safest record is the exact offer details and final order summary for the phone, line, plan, and trade-in you are actually purchasing.
