The reliable way to check an anime figure is to verify the exact product and the actual seller before you buy. Confirm that the manufacturer lists the same character, line, version, color and release timing, then check who will fulfill the order. Packaging details, copyright text, stickers, photos and price can reveal inconsistencies, but none is a universal pass-or-fail test.
Start with the exact figure, not a visual “authenticity” marker
Counterfeit listings often borrow a manufacturer’s name, product photographs or brand language. A convincing image therefore proves only that the listing copied an image. Your first task is to establish what the item is supposed to be.
- Write down the maker, product line, character, scale or format, version, color and product name exactly as shown in the listing.
- Search the manufacturer’s own product catalog for that specific combination, not merely for the character or series.
- Compare the listing’s photos and wording with the manufacturer’s entry. Look for a different face, costume, accessory set, colorway or edition.
- Record the manufacturer’s stated release timing and use it when evaluating the seller’s claim.
Good Smile Company specifically warns that bootlegs can use the Nendoroid or figma names for products that never appeared in its official line-up. A product name that sounds plausible is not enough; the exact item must exist in the maker’s catalog.
Confirm that the release timing makes sense
Compare the date or season in the listing with the manufacturer’s official release information. For Good Smile Company products, the company says items are not released before their official date unless the company has specifically identified an early event sale.

- A listing dated earlier than the maker’s announced release is a reason to pause.
- An early event sale can be legitimate only when the manufacturer identifies that exception.
- Pre-order availability is different from claiming that finished stock has already shipped.
- If the listing’s date, edition or region differs from the official entry, ask the seller to explain the difference before paying.
Release timing is a consistency check, not proof by itself. A seller can misstate a date, and a legitimate regional distribution schedule may differ. Treat the manufacturer’s own explanation as the controlling reference for its products.
Identify the real seller behind the listing
A marketplace is a platform, not necessarily the seller. Open the listing’s seller or “sold by” details and record the legal or storefront name, location when shown, and fulfillment information. The same product page can host several third-party offers.
Prefer the manufacturer or a recognized partner
Good Smile Company says its own online shop is the safest place to buy its products and that shops in its official partner network should offer official Good Smile products. When an official shop or recognized partner is available, it removes one major uncertainty: whether the seller is authorized by the maker.

Do not confuse official images with an official seller
Good Smile Company cautions that a seller may use the company’s official photographs and still ship a bootleg. Ask who owns the inventory and which seller is responsible for the transaction; do not infer those facts from the image style or the marketplace’s size.
Questions to ask an uncertain seller
- Is the item the exact manufacturer version shown in the official catalog?
- Is the pictured box the one that will ship, rather than a stock image?
- Is the item complete and boxed, or is it an unboxed, bulk or replacement listing?
- Why does the release date or price differ from the maker’s information?
A vague answer, refusal to show the actual item, or a description that changes between messages is a reason to walk away. It is not a substitute for manufacturer authentication.
Use a checklist of warning signs, not a single test
Good Smile Company’s customer-support guidance lists several possible bootleg indicators. The company also says that not all bootlegs have these characteristics, so the absence of a warning sign cannot certify authenticity.

Use several independent checks together. A sticker, logo, photograph or price can be copied, omitted or changed for legitimate reasons.

Why stickers and seals are not a pass-or-fail test
Collectors often look for a hologram, distributor seal or other label. Good Smile Company says a label may be absent, printed directly on packaging instead of applied as a sticker, or different because of release timing or distribution region. A missing sticker therefore does not automatically mean “fake,” and a present sticker does not automatically mean “genuine.”
Compare the packaging with the product’s official information for the relevant release and region. If the seller presents the sticker as its only proof, request evidence about the exact product and seller instead.
Compare multiple listings systematically
When several offers claim to sell the same figure, place their details side by side before choosing the cheapest one.

Choose the offer with the clearest product identity and seller accountability, not simply the lowest number. If a key cell cannot be established, record it as unknown and treat that uncertainty as a purchasing risk.
A practical pre-purchase procedure
Step 1: Capture the listing details
Save the product title, seller name, item condition, stated release or shipping date, price, photographs and description. Marketplace pages can change after purchase, so retaining the original details helps you identify what was promised.
Step 2: Locate the manufacturer’s exact entry
Use the maker’s official catalog or product information. Confirm the product name, line, character, version, color, included parts and release timing. If you cannot find the exact item, do not assume that a near match is sufficient.
Step 3: Check the seller separately
Determine whether the offer comes from the manufacturer, an officially recognized partner or an independent third-party seller. A large marketplace may host all three types.

Step 4: Request actual-item evidence
For a used or opened figure, ask for current photographs of the box, figure, base and accessories. Compare them with the official images and look for discrepancies in color, sculpt, logos and text. Stock images cannot establish what is in the seller’s possession.

Step 5: Resolve discrepancies before payment
Ask about missing packaging, unusual wording, an early release, a different colorway or a very low price. If the explanation is incomplete, inconsistent or unverifiable, do not buy the listing.
Step 6: Keep the evidence
Retain the listing, messages, receipt and photographs until you have inspected the delivered figure. This documentation is useful if the item differs from the description or if you contact the manufacturer or payment provider.
How to evaluate photos and descriptions
Photos
- Determine whether the images show the actual unit or a manufacturer stock photo.
- Look for front, back and side views of the box when packaging is included.
- Check the underside or side of the base for the copyright text where it is visible.
- Compare paint boundaries, facial details, joints and accessories with the official product images.
Descriptions
- Watch for vague terms such as “style,” “compatible,” “model,” or “unofficial” when you expect a branded product.
- Check whether the seller names a different manufacturer, omits the line name or avoids saying whether the item is boxed.
- Look for contradictions between the title, specifications, condition field and photographs.
These clues help you decide whether to ask questions or leave the listing. They do not create a guaranteed visual authentication method; Good Smile Company explicitly says that not every bootleg matches the listed characteristics.
What to do after the figure arrives
Inspect the package before discarding any materials. Compare the delivered item with the saved listing and the manufacturer’s official product information.

- Photograph the packaging before opening if the listing promised a sealed item.
- Check the front, back and sides of the box for the expected logos, text and copyright information.
- Inspect the actual figure and base for differences from official images.
- Keep the box, inserts and transaction records while any question remains unresolved.
If the item is materially different from the listing, use the marketplace or payment service’s documented return or dispute process promptly. Describe the mismatch precisely rather than claiming that a single sticker or logo proves a counterfeit.

- Take a clear photograph of the packaging’s front.
- Take a clear photograph of the packaging’s back.
- Take a clear photograph of the packaging’s side.
- Photograph the actual figure, not only the listing image.
- Photograph the copyright text beginning with the © symbol on the back or side of the base.
The company cautions that it may not be able to make a judgment when the evidence is insufficient. Send complete, well-lit images and identify the exact product and seller in your message. Do not describe a pre-purchase visual guess as manufacturer authentication.

The most detailed official guidance available for this process comes from Good Smile Company. Its packaging examples, product lines, partner-shop information and support procedure apply most directly to Good Smile products. Another manufacturer may use different packaging, labels, release practices, authorized-retailer lists and support requirements.
For a different maker, repeat the same high-level process through that maker’s own channels: verify the exact catalog entry, confirm release timing, identify recognized sellers, compare the relevant packaging and request the maker’s specified evidence after purchase. Do not transfer a Good Smile-specific label or box expectation to another brand without confirmation.
Common mistakes that lead to bad buying decisions
Relying on a marketplace badge
A platform badge can describe shipping, membership or storefront status; it does not by itself establish that the manufacturer authorized the seller. Inspect the seller identity shown on the offer.
Assuming a low price is proof of a fake
Good Smile Company advises caution about unusually low prices, but a discount can also reflect used condition, an older release or regional pricing. Investigate the reason instead of treating price as a conclusive test.
Assuming a high price is proof of authenticity
Counterfeiters can charge normal or inflated prices. Price is context, not a certificate.

Using only one photograph
A front-facing image cannot reveal missing packaging, altered bases or a different item inside the box. Request multiple views and actual-item photos.
Waiting until the box is discarded
Packaging may contain the clearest evidence needed for a support inquiry or a dispute. Photograph and retain it until the purchase is settled.
A decision rule for walking away
Do not buy when several of the following remain unresolved:

- The exact product cannot be found in the manufacturer’s catalog.
- The seller cannot be identified independently of the marketplace.
- The claimed release date precedes the maker’s date without a documented early event sale.
- The listing uses only stock images and the seller will not show the actual item.
- The description omits whether the figure is boxed, complete or used.
- The packaging, color, accessories or copyright information conflicts with official details.
- The price is unusually low and the seller cannot explain why.
One unresolved detail may warrant a question; several together make the purchase difficult to justify. Buying from the maker or a recognized partner is the clearest way to reduce that uncertainty.
What can and cannot be established
This method can establish whether a listing is consistent with the manufacturer’s catalog, release timing and seller guidance. It can expose contradictions that justify refusing the transaction. It cannot guarantee that every bootleg will be detected from photographs, and no official prevalence rate or probability of counterfeit sales is established by the manufacturer guidance discussed here.
The safest conclusion is therefore evidence-based: verify the exact product and seller, treat every visual or price clue as supporting evidence, and obtain the maker’s review only after purchase with the requested photographs.
