To check an Android phone’s security status, first open Settings → About phone → Android version. Record the Android security update date, the separate Google Play system update date, the Android version, and the build number. Then open the device’s software-update screen to look for an available update.

Those screens tell you what is installed now. They do not prove that another patch will arrive. To establish future support, identify the exact model and its region or carrier variant, then match it with the manufacturer’s current support policy or supported-device list. Support duration and delivery timing differ by model, manufacturer, market, network provider, and carrier.

What the phone’s update screens can—and cannot—tell you

An installed security patch level is a historical fact: it shows the date of the security fixes currently applied to the phone. It is not an end-of-support date and is not a promise of another update.

Information What it establishes What it does not establish
Android security update date The security-patch level currently installed in the system image. Whether the manufacturer will issue future patches.
Google Play system update date The date of the separately delivered Google Play system component update. That the phone has received the manufacturer’s complete firmware security maintenance.
Android version The major Android release installed. How long security updates will continue.
Build number The precise software build, useful when matching release notes or support instructions. That every device with the same Android version has the same support end date.
Software-update screen Whether an update is being offered to this device at this moment. That no update will arrive later if the rollout is staged or carrier-controlled.

Google’s Android support documentation summarizes the limitation directly: “Update schedules vary by device, manufacturer, and mobile carrier.”

Step 1: Identify the exact phone model and variant

Support policies are normally written for a model, not just a product family such as “Galaxy” or “Pixel.” Before checking a policy, capture the model name and model number from the phone.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap About phone. Some manufacturers place this under System → About phone or use a similar label.
  3. Write down the complete model name and model number. Include suffixes, storage or regional designations, and any code that distinguishes a carrier edition.
  4. Record the country or market in which the phone was sold. If it was purchased through a mobile operator, record the operator as well.

A carrier-branded version can have a different approval process or delivery schedule from an unlocked version with a similar name. Do not select a generic family page when the manufacturer provides separate entries for regional or carrier variants.

Step 2: Read the installed security patch level

On current Android versions, the relevant fields are together in Settings → About phone → Android version. The labels can move slightly between manufacturers and Android releases, so use the About-phone search box if your menu differs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings → About phone → Android version.
  2. Note the Android security update date exactly as displayed.
  3. Note the separate Google Play system update date.
  4. Record the Android version and Build number.

Keep the two dates separate when reporting the phone’s status. A recent Google Play system date should not be presented as though it were the complete manufacturer firmware patch level.

Step 3: Check whether an update is currently available

Use the update control built into the phone rather than relying on a date shown in an article or forum post.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to System → Software updates, or open the manufacturer’s equivalent menu. Common labels include Software update or System update.
  3. Run the check and read the result. If an update is offered, review its stated Android version, security-patch date, and build number before accepting it.
  4. Follow the on-screen installation steps and allow the phone to restart if requested.
  5. After installation, return to About phone → Android version and confirm that the security-update date and build number changed as expected.

Menu names and paths vary by manufacturer and Android version. An “up to date” message means no package is being offered to that device at that moment; it is not a published guarantee about future releases.

Step 4: Verify future support in the manufacturer’s current policy

The manufacturer’s live support page or security-update scope list is the evidence for future coverage. Use the exact model number you recorded, and check all qualifiers shown on the page.

  1. Find the manufacturer’s current security-update policy, supported-device list, or model-specific support page.
  2. Search for the exact model and variant, not merely the product family.
  3. Read the stated support duration and, where provided, the support end date. Check when the support clock starts: it may be tied to first sale, first availability in a particular market, or the device’s initial ship date.
  4. Check the listed cadence, such as monthly, quarterly, or biannual maintenance.
  5. Read regional and carrier qualifications. Confirm whether the phone’s network provider controls approval or can delay delivery.
  6. Save the page’s date or current listing for your records. Policies and scope lists change as regular support periods expire.

If the manufacturer does not publish a model-specific end date, do not infer one from the age of a different model or from the Android version installed. Report the policy that is actually stated and identify any remaining uncertainty.

Step 5: Check the support clock correctly

A stated period is useful only when you know when it begins. Google’s Pixel terms count support from when each model first became available on the Google Store in the United States. Other policies may refer to first sale, regional availability, or the initial ship date. Your purchase date is not necessarily the date used by the manufacturer.

Write down both the duration and the starting event. For example, “seven years from first US Google Store availability” is more precise than simply recording “seven years.” If a policy supplies a calendar end date, use that date instead of recalculating it. If it supplies only a duration, retain the policy wording and note that the exact date depends on the defined start point.

How to interpret a missing or delayed patch

A phone can be within its support period and still show an older patch. Google says Pixel updates roll out gradually and may take a few weeks to reach every device, depending on the device and operator. General Android guidance likewise notes that schedules vary by manufacturer and carrier.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • One missed month is not proof of end of support. Check the official model list and cadence before drawing that conclusion.
  • “Not available yet” can mean staged rollout. A release may be offered to some devices or operators before others.
  • Carrier approval can change timing. A carrier-sold model may receive a package later than an unlocked model.
  • A policy page outranks an old news article. Support scopes change when models leave regular maintenance.
  • An old patch plus no listing is a stronger warning. If the exact model is absent from the current supported-device list or has a published end date in the past, treat the phone as outside the stated support scope.

Check the update screen again after the rollout window described by the manufacturer or carrier. If the official listing says the model is supported but the phone remains behind, contact the carrier or manufacturer with the model number, region, build number, and displayed patch date.

What to do when the phone is second-hand

For a used phone, perform the check before relying on the device for sensitive accounts. A seller’s statement that it is “updated” describes the installed software, not the remaining support period. Open About phone yourself, capture the model and patch dates, and compare the exact variant with the manufacturer’s live list.

Ask when and where the device was originally sold if the support policy uses a regional start date. An imported model may follow a different schedule from the same name sold by a local carrier. Also check whether the device is carrier-branded, because approval and delivery can differ from an unlocked version. If the model is already absent from the current scope or its published end date has passed, treat that as an end-of-support issue even if the phone works normally.

Published support examples: why model-specific terms matter

Official policies illustrate why you must not apply one manufacturer’s promise to every Android phone.

Google Pixel support periods

Google’s Pixel support page, accessed in 2026, states that Pixel 8 and later phones, including Pixel 8a, receive seven years of operating-system and security updates. The seven-year period is counted from when each model first became available on the Google Store in the United States.

  • The Pixel Camera gives you amazing photo and video quality; Google AI helps you create perfect group shots with Best Take and fix blurry images with Photo Unblur[3]
  • The 6.1-inch Pixel 8a Actua display is even brighter and more vibrant; it’s fast and responsive for smoother scrolling, video streaming, and switching between apps on your phone[4]
  • Google AI helps with everyday tasks; search anything right from the app you’re in, just by drawing a circle around an image, text, or video[5]; get a summary of emails and brainstorm ideas with Gemini[6]; and avoid spammers with Call Assist[7]

The same page lists Pixel 7, Pixel 6, Pixel Fold, and other specified models under a five-year operating-system and security-update period, also counted from first US Google Store availability. It says Pixel 5a and earlier listed models no longer receive Android version updates or security updates.

These are Pixel terms. They cannot be generalized to another manufacturer or to a different regional sales date. If you are checking a Pixel, match the exact model and use Google’s current listing rather than calculating from the phone’s purchase date.

Samsung security-update scopes

Samsung publishes live device lists divided into monthly, quarterly, and biannual security-update scopes. The list changes as regular support periods expire. Samsung also states that availability and timing may vary by market, network provider, and model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Samsung’s security-maintenance releases include patches from Google and Samsung. Its release entry dated October 2, 2026, is an example of a dated maintenance release; it is not evidence that every supported device receives that release on that date. Check the exact model’s current scope and delivery notes.

Android Enterprise Recommended requirements

For the applicable enterprise-focused device category, Google’s Android Enterprise Recommended documentation requires original equipment manufacturers to publish an update plan and security-update information, including a guaranteed end date and details about fixes. The stated requirement is 90-day security-update information or support for five years from the initial ship date.

This is a category-specific program requirement. It is not a universal five-year rule for all consumer Android phones, and a consumer model should not be assumed to meet it unless it is listed under the relevant program terms.

Do not confuse operating-system upgrades with security patches

Manufacturers may describe operating-system upgrades and security updates in separate parts of a policy. An operating-system upgrade changes the Android release; a security update applies fixes without necessarily changing the major Android version. Compare the two commitments independently.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When a policy says “seven years of OS and security updates,” read it as two related promises that share a duration, not as proof that every monthly security release will also deliver a new Android version. Conversely, a phone can stop receiving major Android upgrades while still receiving security patches during the remaining support period.

What a security-update date means for risk

The date is a useful snapshot for comparing phones, checking an incident, or reporting a support problem. It does not identify every individual fix included in the build, and it does not predict the next release. Use the build number alongside the date when contacting support because the same Android version can have different builds for different models or regions.

If the date is old, first establish whether the model is still listed and what cadence applies. A quarterly device can legitimately have a different schedule from a monthly device. A staged release can also leave two otherwise similar phones showing different dates temporarily. The strongest evidence of end of support is a past published end date or removal from the manufacturer’s current scope, not a single delayed screen result.

Compare phones by support evidence, not by patch-day headlines

If you are choosing between models, use the same evidence for each one. A useful comparison looks like this:

Troubleshooting common results

What you see What to do next
The security date is old, but the model appears on the supported list. Check the listed cadence, rollout timing, and carrier qualification. Recheck the update screen after the stated rollout window.
The update screen says “up to date,” but another device has a newer patch. Compare model number, region, and carrier. Staged releases do not reach every variant simultaneously.
The model name is similar to several entries. Use the full model number from About phone and match the regional or carrier suffix.
The Google Play system date is recent but the Android security date is old. Report the dates separately and verify the manufacturer’s firmware support status.
The model is missing from the current support scope. Look for a published end date or an archived support statement. Do not infer continued coverage from another model in the same family.
A carrier phone has no update while an unlocked version does. Check the carrier’s release status and ask the carrier or manufacturer using the phone’s build and model details.

A record you can keep for each phone

For a reliable support check, save these fields in one note:

  • Manufacturer and complete model name.
  • Model number and regional or carrier variant.
  • Country or market of sale and network provider.
  • Android version.
  • Android security-update date.
  • Google Play system-update date.
  • Build number.
  • Date you checked the manufacturer’s policy.
  • Published support cadence and end date, if stated.

Repeating this check after a policy change, a missed release, or a carrier switch gives you a defensible answer about both the patch installed today and the support that is promised going forward.

Quick decision checklist

  1. Can you identify the complete model number, including a carrier or regional suffix?
  2. Did you record the Android security date and Google Play system date separately?
  3. Did you run the phone’s own software-update check?
  4. Is the exact model on the manufacturer’s current support page or scope list?
  5. Do you know the support cadence and the event that starts the support clock?
  6. Is a support end date published, or is the duration qualified by market or carrier?
  7. If the phone is behind, have you allowed for staged rollout and carrier approval?

If the answer to the first four questions is yes, you can usually distinguish the installed patch from the manufacturer’s stated future coverage. If the model cannot be matched confidently, do not assume support based on a similar product name.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find my Android security patch level?

Open Settings → About phone → Android version and read the Android security update date. Record the separate Google Play system update date, Android version, and build number as well.

Best Value
Google Pixel 8a, 128GB, Bay - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • Google Pixel 8a designed with a 6.1-inch Actua OLED display, delivering improved brightness, enhanced outdoor visibility, and smoother color rendering in a compact and lightweight form factor.

How do I know whether my Android phone is still getting security updates?

Identify the exact model and carrier or regional variant, then check that model on the manufacturer’s current security-update policy or supported-device list. Look for its cadence and a published support end date.

Does an up-to-date message guarantee future updates?

No. It means no update is being offered to that device at that moment. Rollouts can be staged, and future coverage depends on the manufacturer’s model-specific policy.

Is a Google Play system update the same as an Android security patch?

No. Android security updates and Google Play system updates are separate fields. Report both dates separately; a recent Play system date does not establish complete manufacturer firmware support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why has another phone received a newer patch?

Delivery can vary by model, market, network provider, and carrier. Pixel updates may roll out gradually over a few weeks, and carrier approval can delay a package.

How long will my Pixel receive updates?

Google’s current terms state seven years of OS and security updates for Pixel 8 and later, including Pixel 8a, and five years for Pixel 7, Pixel 6, Pixel Fold, and other listed models. The period starts at first US Google Store availability, so verify the exact model and current listing.

Does every Samsung Galaxy phone receive monthly updates?

No. Samsung’s live scope page places models in monthly, quarterly, or biannual lists, and the lists change. Availability and timing can vary by market, network provider, and model.

What should I do if my model is missing from the support list?

Look for a published end date or archived support statement. Do not infer continued coverage from another phone in the same family. If the date has passed or the model is no longer listed, treat it as outside the stated support scope.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Check Settings → About phone → Android version for the installed Android security date, Google Play system date, Android version, and build number. Then check the phone’s software-update screen. For future coverage, match the complete model and carrier or regional variant to the manufacturer’s current policy, including its support duration, start date, cadence, and end date. A delayed patch may reflect staged or carrier-controlled delivery; only the exact model’s current support information can establish whether updates are still promised.
