Do not judge an AI tutor’s answer by its confident tone or polished explanation. Treat it as a set of claims to verify: separate the claims, check each against an independent source suited to the subject, test the reasoning or calculation, and ask a teacher or qualified expert when uncertainty remains.
This matters because generative AI can produce “nonsensical, inaccurate or false information presented as fact,” according to the UK Department for Education (DfE). Its guidance says, “Any content produced requires critical judgement to check for appropriateness and accuracy.”
Why an AI tutor can sound right and still be wrong
An AI tutor generates likely text from patterns in its training and conversation context. It does not automatically know whether every statement is true, current, appropriate for your course, or supported by evidence. A fluent paragraph can therefore contain a wrong definition, an invented citation, a missing condition, a calculation error, or an outdated rule.
The DfE warns that generative-AI output may be inaccurate, inappropriate or unsafe, biased, out of context, out of date, unreliable, or low quality. It also says AI cannot replace the judgment and deep subject knowledge of a human expert. UNESCO’s Guidance for generative AI in education and research calls for human agency and age-appropriate safeguards in educational use.

Use an answer as a draft explanation or starting point, not as proof. The checking sequence below is practical guidance synthesized from those principles; it is not a formally validated universal accuracy test.
The six-step verification workflow
1. Break the response into checkable claims
Copy the answer into a document and mark every statement that could be true or false. Separate:
- Definitions: what a term means.
- Facts: names, dates, formulas, events, quotations, or measurements.
- Rules and conditions: “always,” “only if,” units, exceptions, or jurisdiction.
- Calculations: numbers, equations, conversions, and intermediate steps.
- Conclusions: the answer the tutor draws from its evidence.
Turn vague wording into a precise question. For example, change “The treaty ended the conflict” into “Did the treaty formally end the conflict, and on what date?” A long answer may contain several claims that require different sources.
2. Choose an independent source that fits the claim
Use a source selected for the subject, not simply the first result you find. A source is more useful when you can identify who is responsible for it, see the evidence behind the statement, and determine whether it addresses the same question.
| Claim type | Good first check | What to inspect |
|---|---|---|
| Course concept or definition | Your assigned textbook, lesson notes, or course materials | Whether the wording matches the level, notation, and definitions used in class |
| Law, policy, public guidance, or current rule | The responsible government, regulator, institution, or official publication | Effective date, jurisdiction, exceptions, and whether the page is still current |
| Historical event or quotation | A primary document or a recognized academic reference | Original context, date, translation, and whether the quotation is complete |
| Scientific claim | A course reference, authoritative scientific body, or identifiable research source | Definitions, conditions, units, method, and whether the evidence supports the exact claim |
| Numerical result | Independent recomputation, a calculator, or a spreadsheet | Formula, units, rounding, signs, and each intermediate value |
If the tutor supplies citations, open every important one. Confirm that the source exists, is about the stated subject, and actually supports the specific sentence. A real source can still be misquoted or applied outside its scope.
3. Check context, date, and scope
Ask three questions for each source:
- Context: Does the tutor leave out a qualification, exception, comparison group, or relevant condition?
- Date: Could the fact have changed since the tutor’s information was current? This matters for policy, software, prices, scientific consensus, and public figures.
- Scope: Does the statement apply to your country, school system, edition, age group, units, or problem assumptions?
Words such as “always,” “never,” “best,” and “proves” deserve special scrutiny. Replace them with the narrower statement the evidence supports. If two sources disagree, record the disagreement rather than asking the tutor to choose the answer for you.

4. Test the reasoning, not just the final sentence
For mathematics, recompute the work independently. Enter the expression into a suitable calculator, but also inspect the setup: a calculator can confirm arithmetic while leaving an incorrect formula or unit conversion untouched. Try a rough estimate to see whether the result is in a plausible range.

For science, check whether the conclusion follows from the stated evidence and conditions. Confirm units and distinguish correlation from causation. For history or literature, compare the interpretation with the cited passage or primary evidence and ask whether an alternative reading is possible. For programming, run a small, safe example and inspect edge cases; do not execute untrusted code on important data.
When a problem has a known method, solve it without looking at the tutor’s result first. Comparing two independent solutions makes it easier to locate a shared assumption or a copied mistake.
5. Probe uncertainty, bias, and contradictions
Ask the tutor to list its assumptions, show each step, identify evidence, and state what would change the conclusion. Then verify those statements independently. Asking the same tutor, “Are you sure?” is not independent confirmation; it usually produces another version of the same unverified answer.
Look for selective evidence, stereotypes, unsupported certainty, and a conclusion that conflicts with the source it cites. Ask whether the answer presents one perspective as universal, omits relevant groups, or uses a loaded definition. A tutor may also contradict itself across messages, so compare the current answer with the original question and any earlier conditions.

How to judge the source you use for checking
No single source-ranking list works for every subject. Compare candidate sources on four practical dimensions:
| Dimension | Question to ask | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|
| Authority | Who is responsible, and what relevant expertise or institutional role do they have? | No identifiable author or organization, or a source that makes expertise impossible to assess |
| Relevance | Does it address the same claim, population, definition, and conditions? | A headline or search snippet that does not support the exact proposition |
| Recency | Is the information current for a topic that changes over time? | An undated page or an old edition used for a current rule |
| Traceability | Can you inspect the underlying document, data, quotation, or method? | Uncheckable references, circular links, or claims repeated without evidence |
Your teacher’s materials may be the most relevant source for an assignment because they establish the course’s required definitions and method. An official authority may be better for a current regulation. A primary document may be essential for a historical quotation. Record which source answered which claim instead of treating one website as a universal authority.
Worked checks for common AI-tutor answers
Math: verify setup, units, and arithmetic
- Rewrite the problem and list the given values with units.
- Identify the formula or method and check that its conditions apply.
- Recalculate each intermediate step independently.
- Check signs, powers of ten, conversions, rounding, and the final unit.
- Estimate the answer and test a simple special case if one is available.
If the tutor says a 15% increase followed by a 15% decrease returns to the starting value, test it with a convenient starting number. Multiplying by 1.15 and then by 0.85 gives 0.9775 of the original, not the original amount. The example shows why verbal symmetry is not a substitute for calculation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsScience: distinguish a correct result from a missing condition
Extract the variables, units, and assumptions. Check an authoritative reference for the definition, then see whether the tutor applied it under the same temperature, pressure, concentration, species, or experimental conditions. A statement can be broadly true but wrong for the problem because one condition was omitted.
History and civics: verify date, source, and context
Locate the original document or a recognized reference. Confirm who created it, when, for whom, and for what purpose. Check whether the tutor has confused an announcement with a law, an agreement with its later implementation, or a quotation with a paraphrase. Read enough surrounding text to test whether the cited words support the claimed interpretation.
Language and literature: separate evidence from interpretation
Check quotations against the assigned edition and page or line reference. Mark which parts are textual evidence and which are interpretation. More than one interpretation may be defensible, but an interpretation still needs to fit the passage and acknowledge significant counterevidence.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Programming and technical explanations: run a minimal, safe test
Check the language version, required libraries, input assumptions, and expected output. Test a small example, an empty input, a boundary value, and an invalid value where relevant. Read the explanation for security or data-loss risks before running commands. A snippet that works in one environment may fail because its dependencies or version assumptions differ.
What AI citations can and cannot prove
A citation is a lead to evidence, not evidence by itself. Verify the link, title, author or issuing body, publication date, and the exact passage. Check whether the tutor has changed the meaning by quoting selectively or by applying a general statement to a different case.
When no inspectable source is supplied, ask the tutor to provide search terms or the type of primary reference you should seek, then perform the search yourself. Do not treat a citation that cannot be opened or located as confirmation. Keep a short log: claim, source, relevant passage or calculation, and your conclusion. This also makes it easier for a teacher to review your reasoning.
OpenAI’s educator guidance recommends that students log and cite sources when using AI and says educators can assess whether students challenge, double-check, and consider possible bias in information. The guidance is available at OpenAI’s educator help page.

AI-detection tools attempt to estimate authorship or whether text resembles generated writing. That is a different question from factual accuracy. A human-written answer can be wrong, and an AI-generated answer can contain a correct calculation. A detector score therefore cannot validate a definition, proof, citation, or conclusion.

Extra safeguards for children and school use
For younger pupils, supervision should cover the prompt, the output, the sources used to check it, and any personal information entered. Do not paste a child’s private records, another student’s identifying information, or confidential school material into a tutor unless the school has approved that use and the service’s rules allow it.
Use age-appropriate explanations and keep a teacher involved when a child cannot judge a source independently. UNESCO’s guidance emphasizes human agency and age-appropriate ethical validation and pedagogical design. The DfE likewise says pupil-facing use needs care, safeguards, and appropriate supervision. School policies, age limits, and legal requirements vary by jurisdiction and product, so check the current rules that apply to your setting.
A printable 10-minute checking checklist
- Have I split the answer into individual factual claims?
- What is the most important claim to verify first?
- Did I choose a source appropriate to this subject and course?
- Can I identify the source’s responsible author or institution?
- Does the source support the exact claim rather than a related headline?
- Are the date, country, edition, units, and conditions correct?
- Did I recompute numerical work and inspect the method?
- Did I look for omitted exceptions, bias, or unsupported certainty?
- Did I verify the evidence independently instead of asking the same tutor to agree?
- Do I need a teacher or subject expert before relying on this answer?
If you cannot answer one of these questions, label the response unverified and keep checking rather than presenting it as fact.
When an answer is safe to use
You can use an AI tutor’s response as study help when its key claims agree with an appropriate independent source, the reasoning survives an independent check, the scope and date fit your assignment, and no unresolved high-stakes issue remains. For graded work, follow your school’s rules about disclosure, citation, and permitted tools; correctness does not make undisclosed assistance acceptable.
For an uncertain or consequential answer, stop at the point of uncertainty and get human review. The goal is not to prove that an AI tutor is always wrong or always right. It is to make the evidence and reasoning strong enough that you can explain why the answer deserves trust.
