Do not treat a citation label, a working link, or a fluent AI answer as proof. Check each important claim against the cited page, then judge whether that source is authoritative, current, in scope, and independent of the other evidence. The practical audit below shows how to do that in a few minutes and how to escalate checks for health, legal, financial, safety, and civic questions.
The quick test: five questions for every important claim
When an AI search answer matters, pause before accepting it. Pick one factual statement at a time and ask:
- What exactly is being claimed? Separate a paragraph into individual facts, numbers, dates, causes, recommendations, and predictions.
- Is there a citation attached to this claim? A nearby link may support only one sentence, not everything in the paragraph.
- Does the cited page actually establish the wording? Find the relevant passage and check its qualifiers, exceptions, population, date, and level of certainty.
- Is the source suitable for this question? Check the author or issuing body, expertise, primary evidence, and possible conflicts.
- Does the evidence justify the answer’s confidence? A weak, stale, indirect, or disputed source means the answer is unverified, even when the prose sounds certain.
This is a source audit, not a popularity contest. A high-ranked result or official-looking domain is a clue to investigate, not a guarantee that the claim is true.

1. Break the response into checkable claims
Start with the statements that could change a decision. Mark every number, date, legal requirement, health effect, financial figure, causal explanation, named organization, and assertion about what will happen. Treat each as a separate claim. For example, the sentence “The rule took effect in 2024, applies nationwide, and carries a $500 penalty” contains at least three claims: the effective date, geographic scope, and penalty amount.

Do not audit only the headline conclusion. AI systems can combine a supported fact with an unsupported inference in the same sentence. Copy the exact wording into a note so you can compare it with the source instead of relying on memory.
2. Open the citation attached to that claim
Follow the citation and confirm that it loads the described page rather than a home page, search result, login screen, or unrelated document. OpenAI Help Center guidance for web search states: “Search results and citations can be incomplete, outdated, or incorrect.” That warning means opening the source is part of using the answer, not an optional extra.
Record the page title, author or organization, publication date, update date, and the section that appears to support the claim. If the link is broken or the page has moved, treat the claim as unsupported until you locate the original record through a reliable route.
3. Match the source to the exact wording
Search within the page for the key term, then read the cited passage and several paragraphs around it. A page can mention the same subject without supporting the AI’s statement. Test five elements:
- Subject: Is it discussing the same product, law, disease, population, or event?
- Predicate: Does it actually say that the event occurred, rather than merely proposing, measuring, or debating it?
- Scope: Does the evidence cover the same place, people, version, and time period?
- Strength: Does the source justify “may,” “is associated with,” or “causes”? These are not interchangeable.
- Exceptions: Are there conditions, exclusions, confidence intervals, or limitations omitted by the answer?
For example, a study reporting an association does not by itself prove causation. A government page describing a proposed rule does not prove that the rule is in force. A product manual for version 3 does not establish behavior in version 4.
4. Read enough context to catch misattribution
AI summaries can attach a citation to the wrong sentence, attribute a quotation to the wrong speaker, or merge findings from different sections. Read the source’s heading, methods or authority statement, and conclusion where relevant. The 2025 FAccT qualitative study reports that participants recommended checking sources in full context, paying attention to source type and expertise, and distinguishing sourced material from content whose origin is unclear. Those recommendations are especially useful when an answer compresses a long report into one confident sentence.

Check whether the source is quoting another source. If so, follow the chain to the underlying study, statute, dataset, or original announcement when the claim is consequential. A secondary article may accurately summarize evidence, but the primary record lets you inspect definitions and limitations directly.
5. Look for claims that have no citation
Do not confuse a correct citation with complete sourcing. An answer may cite one paragraph while leaving its numerical estimate, comparison, or recommendation unsupported. Audit every material factual statement, not just the links that are present.
Two useful terms describe the failure modes:
- Citation precision: Of the citations supplied, how many support the statement beside each one?
- Citation recall: Of the factual statements that should have sources, how many actually have them?
An answer can have high precision but low recall if its few citations are accurate while most claims are uncited. It can have high recall but low precision if nearly every sentence has a link that does not really support it.
6. Judge whether the source is authoritative for this question
Reliability is topic-specific. Identify who produced the page, what expertise they have, and what role the organization plays. A regulator is generally the appropriate starting point for a current rule; an original clinical or scientific paper is the primary source for its own findings; a manufacturer’s technical documentation is the primary source for that product’s documented behavior.
Primary does not mean infallible. A primary document can be outdated, narrow, promotional, methodologically weak, or superseded. Conversely, a careful secondary review can be valuable when it transparently explains and compares several primary sources. Ask why this author should be trusted for this particular claim, rather than assigning a universal trust score.
Google Search Help describes reliability as involving multiple signals and says expertise, authoritativeness, and trustworthiness matter. It also explains that systems use signals as clues because they do not understand content exactly as humans do. A prominent site, many inbound links, or a high search position therefore cannot replace reading the evidence.

7. Check date, geography, version, and population
Compare the source’s publication or update date with how quickly the fact changes. A stable historical fact may tolerate an older source; software instructions, prices, public-health guidance, regulations, and election information may not. OpenAI’s guidance specifically recommends checking when a source was published or updated.
Then verify scope:
- Geography and jurisdiction: A rule in one country, state, or municipality may not apply to you.
- Version: Software, standards, contracts, and policies can change between releases.
- Population: A study of adults may not apply to children; a trial group may not represent everyone.
- Time period: A statistic from one year cannot automatically describe the present.
- Edition and conditions: Manuals, datasets, and tests may depend on a specific configuration or environment.
Google notes that new topics can have limited reliable published coverage. When authoritative material is sparse, state that uncertainty instead of treating the first plausible page as settled evidence.
8. Cross-check consequential or disputed claims
For a claim that could affect health, money, legal rights, safety, employment, voting, or reputation, find an independent authoritative source or the original record. Compare sources on direct support, subject expertise, date and scope, primary versus secondary status, and independence.

Look for genuinely separate records, such as a regulator’s notice and the underlying statute, or a study and a transparent systematic review. If credible sources disagree, preserve the disagreement in your notes rather than averaging it into a false consensus.
9. Calibrate the answer’s certainty
Classify the result after checking the evidence:
- Supported: The source directly establishes the claim, fits the scope and date, and no material contradiction is apparent.
- Partly supported: The source supports a narrower or more qualified statement than the AI made.
- Unverified: The link is missing, inaccessible, tangential, or too weak to establish the claim.
- Disputed: Competent sources disagree or the evidence is genuinely unsettled.
Rewrite your own conclusion to match that category. Replace absolute language with the source’s actual degree of certainty, and identify what remains unknown.
How to evaluate a citation beyond whether it matches

| Independence | Does another source provide separate evidence? | Several pages repeat the same original error. |
Choosing the right kind of source
Use the source type that can directly answer the question. The following hierarchy is a starting point, not an automatic ranking:

Source authority is always relative to the claim. An organization can be authoritative about its own published specification and still be a poor source for an independent assessment of that specification.

Do not choose the source with the most confident wording or the prettiest page. Compare the disagreement systematically:
- Write the competing claims in neutral, precise language.
- Check which source directly measures or records the fact.
- Compare author expertise and institutional responsibility for the topic.
- Check dates, versions, jurisdictions, populations, and definitions.
- Separate a difference in evidence from a difference in interpretation or policy preference.
- Look for independent corroboration and disclosed limitations.
If one source is newer but less direct, and another is older but primary, explain that trade-off. If the conflict cannot be resolved, report the uncertainty and avoid making a decision that depends on an unproven detail.

Health and safety
Verify the claim against a current public-health authority, professional body, or original clinical evidence. Check the population, dose or exposure, contraindications, and date. Do not use an AI summary as the final basis for diagnosis, treatment, emergency action, or safety-critical operation; contact the appropriate qualified professional or emergency service.
Legal and financial matters
Confirm the jurisdiction, effective date, definitions, and exceptions in the controlling rule or official guidance. Financial figures need a date, currency, assumptions, and whether they are estimates or guaranteed terms. A general explanation may help you form questions, but it does not replace advice tailored to your circumstances.

Check the relevant election authority, government register, or court source for deadlines, eligibility, polling details, and current officeholders. New or changing topics may have incomplete coverage, so record the date you verified the information.

What published evaluations reveal about AI citations
A 2023 paper by Liu, Zhang, and Liang evaluated Bing Chat, NeevaAI, Perplexity, and YouChat using the corpus and methods available at that time. It found that an average of 51.5% of generated sentences were fully supported by citations, while 74.5% of citations supported their associated sentence. These are historical, study-specific averages, not current rates for every platform or a prediction about an individual answer.
The authors wrote, “A prerequisite trait of a trustworthy generative search engine is verifiability.” Their evaluation also reported an inverse correlation between perceived utility and citation precision (r = −0.96). That result is specific to the study and does not show that usefulness causes inaccurate citations. Its practical lesson is narrower: an answer can feel useful while still requiring claim-by-claim verification.
The 2025 FAccT qualitative study captured participant concerns and recommendations rather than a prevalence rate. Participants emphasized relevant citations, full-context reading to detect misattribution, useful source context, attention to expertise and source type, and a clear distinction between sourced material and content whose origin is unclear.
A 2026 PMLR paper proposed an observational framework that examines retrieval and citation together. In a case study of Google AI Overviews for “Your Money or Your Life” queries drawn from MS MARCO, it reported that AI-generated documents were cited more often than human-authored documents after controlling for retrieval rank; the difference was driven primarily by non-retrieved citations. That finding is limited to the specified dataset, platform, query category, and method. Use it as a reason to inspect provenance, not as a claim about all AI search systems.
A practical worksheet you can reuse
For each important statement, fill in one row:

For a fast review, mark unsupported claims in one color and scope problems in another. For a consequential decision, save the page as a PDF or note its access date because online content can change.
Final decision rule
Trust an AI search answer only to the extent that its important claims survive this audit. A citation is useful when it leads to evidence that directly supports the exact statement, comes from an appropriate and current source, matches the relevant scope, and is independently corroborated when the stakes or dispute warrant it. When any of those conditions fail, use the answer as a lead to investigate—not as the evidence on which you make the decision.
