Do not treat “AI-generated” as a safety rating. Check the download source and developer, compare the permissions with the app’s actual purpose, and follow warnings from your device’s built-in protection. An AI-made game from an identified developer in an official store should be assessed differently from an unknown APK sent through a message, but neither a store listing nor a clean scan is an absolute guarantee.
What “AI-generated” does—and does not—tell you
“AI-generated app” can describe several different things: software whose code was produced with an AI tool, a game whose artwork or dialogue was generated by AI, or an app that uses generative AI as one of its features. The label says nothing by itself about who built the download, whether the package was modified, what data it collects, or whether its installer is malicious.
Assess it as you would any other app. The important evidence is the distribution path, developer identity, requested access, platform warnings, and the developer’s explanation of what the software does. Google’s AI-Generated Content policy concerns prohibited output and developers’ responsibilities for AI features. It is not a certification of an app’s code, privacy practices, or download safety.

A detection can depend on the device and connectivity conditions, so “potentially harmful” should be treated as a serious platform warning, not as a harmless label or proof that every detail of the app is known.

Use this five-part safety check before installing
Work through the checks in order. Stop when a warning or an unexplained risk is strong enough that you cannot verify the download.
- Confirm the source. Prefer the official store listing when one exists. Be cautious with links from advertisements, social posts, chat messages, file-sharing sites and mirror pages.
- Verify the developer. Match the developer name, spelling, logo and support information with the publisher you intended to use. A familiar app name is not enough; look for an impersonator using a similar name.
- Read the permissions in context. Decide whether each sensitive permission is necessary for the app’s core function. An unexpected request is a reason to pause, especially when the download came from outside the official store.
- Read the platform warning instead of dismissing it. Play Protect may recommend a scan, warn about an installation or block it. Treat that intervention as a stop signal while you investigate.
- Check the developer’s explanation. Look for a clear description of features, data handling and support. This is a useful credibility check, not a guarantee that the app is safe.
Source and developer: establish where the file came from
Official store listings
Start with the store listing for the platform you use. Google says it reviews apps and developers before an app becomes available on Google Play. Apple says App Store apps come from identified developers and are reviewed for privacy, security and safety. Those controls make the official listing the better starting point than an unknown direct download, but they do not remove every risk.
Compare the listing with the download you are about to open:
- Is the app name exactly the same, including punctuation and spacing?
- Does the developer name match the expected publisher rather than a look-alike?
- Do the icon, screenshots and description describe the same game or utility?
- Does the listing identify a support method and a privacy explanation that make sense for the app?
- Are you being redirected to a file that is not the store’s normal install flow?
A store page can be copied or an account can be compromised, so use these details as evidence rather than as a promise. If the developer identity cannot be matched to the project you intended to install, do not proceed merely because the name is familiar.
Direct downloads and APK files
On Android, Google describes downloads from browsers, messaging apps and file managers as “internet-sideloading” sources in its warning guidance. A direct APK can be legitimate, but the route gives you fewer independent checks than a Play listing. Be especially cautious when a stranger sends the file, when a page pressures you to install immediately, or when the file is advertised as a modified, unlocked or “premium” edition.

Do not assume that an APK is safe because it has a plausible filename, an attractive game icon or many downloads on a third-party page. The file may have been repackaged after the original developer released it. If an official store version exists, use that version unless you have a specific, verifiable reason not to.
Permissions: compare access with the app’s job
Permissions are clues, not verdicts. A permission by itself does not prove that an app is malicious, and a small permission list does not prove that an app is trustworthy. The useful question is whether the request is proportionate to the feature you are using and whether the source and platform warnings support the request.

Pay particular attention to combinations. An unfamiliar sideloaded app that requests SMS, notification-listener or accessibility access is a high-risk situation in Google’s warning guidance. Do not grant the access simply because the app claims it is required. Close the installer and verify the publisher through an independent route.
What Play Protect warnings mean on Android
Before installation
Google says Play Protect scans apps regardless of where they came from and performs real-time checks on non-Play installations. When it does not recognize an app, it may recommend sending information about it for scanning before installation. The on-screen prompt may read: “Play Protect hasn’t seen this app before. To protect your device and data, send some info about the app to Google for scanning before you install.”
A scan recommendation means the app is unfamiliar to the service; it is not a declaration that the app is malicious. However, an unfamiliar source, sensitive permissions and a warning together are enough reason not to install until you can verify the file and developer.

Warnings and blocks
Play Protect can warn, block an installation, or disable or remove an app it identifies as harmful. Do not routinely bypass a block by turning off protection or searching for an alternate installer. First confirm that you obtained the file from the intended developer and that the app’s function explains its permissions. If you cannot establish both, abandon the installation.
A clean result is also limited evidence. Platform scanning reduces risk but cannot guarantee that an app has no privacy problems, deceptive behavior or future update that changes what it does. Keep Play Protect active and continue to review an app after it is installed.
Android and iPhone/iPad are different cases

A practical decision tree for an AI-generated game or app
Case 1: Official store, known developer, normal permissions
If the app is in the appropriate official store, the developer identity matches the project you intended to use, and permissions fit the advertised features, the risk is lower than for an unknown direct download. Read the privacy information, install with built-in protections enabled, and review what the app requests when you first run it.
Case 2: Official store, but surprising access
Pause even if the listing is official. A game that asks for SMS, notification-listener or accessibility access needs a specific, credible explanation. Check whether the access is optional, whether the feature can work without it, and whether the developer explains the data use. If the explanation does not match the permission, choose a different app.
Case 3: Direct APK from an unfamiliar site
Do not install while the source is unverified. Find the developer’s official distribution channel independently rather than following a link supplied with the file. If there is no reliable way to match the APK to the developer, treat the uncertainty as the deciding factor and delete the file.

Case 4: Play Protect warns or blocks
Stop. Read the exact warning, submit the app for the offered scan if you are comfortable doing so, and verify the source and permissions. If the warning indicates harmful behavior or the installation is blocked, do not bypass the control. Remove the file and obtain the app only through a trusted, verifiable channel.
Case 5: The app is already installed and then flagged
Stop using the app, especially for banking, authentication or private conversations. Follow the device’s removal guidance. If Play Protect disables or removes it, do not reinstall the same package from another mirror. Review other recent installations if you gave the app sensitive access, and change important credentials from a device you trust when there is a realistic possibility that the app exposed them.

Safety review does not end at the install button. AI features can change through server-side updates, and an app update can request additional access. Watch for:
- New permissions that are unrelated to a feature you enabled.
- Unexpected notification, SMS, accessibility or device-control requests.
- Login screens or payment prompts that appear outside the app’s stated purpose.
- Pop-ups that pressure you to disable security features or install another package.
- Battery, data or network activity that is disproportionate to the app’s normal use.
- Play Protect or operating-system warnings after an update.
When an update changes the app’s behavior or access, repeat the source, developer and permission checks. If the developer cannot explain the change, uninstall the app rather than accepting access by default.

“The AI label means it passed a special safety test”
It does not. Google’s AI-Generated Content policy governs prohibited content and developer obligations for generative features. Malware and download protections assess app behavior and risk through separate mechanisms.

“It is in a store, so it is guaranteed safe”
Store review and identified developers are valuable safeguards, but they are not an absolute guarantee. Continue to check permissions, privacy explanations and changes after updates.
“The scan was clean, so every permission is fine”
A scan result is one signal. It does not explain why a simple game needs access to notifications or SMS, nor does it establish that the developer’s data practices are acceptable.
“The warning is probably a false positive; I will disable protection”
Do not make bypassing a routine step. Verify the file and publisher first. If you cannot explain the warning with evidence from the intended developer, leave the app uninstalled.
“A popular download page is the same as the developer”
Popularity and polished design do not prove provenance. Follow the developer identity and distribution path, not the page’s claims or download counter.
Quick checklist before you tap Install
- Source is the official store or a distribution channel independently confirmed as belonging to the developer.
- Developer name, app identity, icon and description match the software you intended to obtain.
- Permissions are proportionate to the app’s core features.
- SMS, notification-listener and accessibility access have a specific, credible explanation.
- Play Protect or the platform has not issued a warning that you are ignoring.
- Privacy and support information are clear enough for you to understand what data the app handles.
- You have not been pressured to disable built-in protection or install a second package.
If any item fails and you cannot independently resolve it, do not install the app. The safest choice is to use a verified alternative or wait for the developer to provide a trustworthy distribution route.
