To check an AI-generated answer, locate the citation beside the claim or open the answer’s Sources panel, open the linked article, and compare its exact wording with the claim. Check the publisher and publication or update date, then corroborate important facts with another reliable source. A citation is a lead for verification—not proof that the answer is correct.
The same method works whether the answer appears in ChatGPT Search, Google AI Overviews, Microsoft Copilot Chat or another interface: identify the source, inspect the passage, test its scope and freshness, and record what remains uncertain.
What you are checking
An AI answer can expose sources in several ways: an inline citation attached to a sentence, a numbered footnote, a publisher icon, a Sources button, or a list of links below the response. These controls show where the system says information came from, but they do not establish that the linked material supports the wording you received.
Verification has two separate questions:
- Does a source link exist? Find the citation control and open it.
- Does that source support the claim? Read the relevant passage, including dates, conditions and exceptions, and compare it with the AI’s wording.
OpenAI’s Help Center says that “Search results and citations can be incomplete, outdated, or incorrect.” Google’s Search Help similarly warns that “AI Overviews can and will make mistakes.” Those are product-owner warnings, not a measurement of how often any particular answer fails. They explain why a visible citation still needs inspection.

A six-step workflow for checking any AI answer
- Find the citation controls. Look next to each claim, at the end of the answer, or in a button labelled Sources, View sources or similar. On some interfaces, selecting a citation opens a preview before you leave the answer.
- Match the source to the specific claim. Open the citation attached to the sentence you care about, not merely the first link in a general source list. If several claims appear in one paragraph, check each citation separately.
- Locate the supporting passage. Use the article’s find function for a distinctive name, figure or phrase. Read enough surrounding text to capture the subject, time period, geography, sample or legal qualification. A page that mentions the same topic may not support the AI’s conclusion.
- Check publisher and date. Record who published the material and when it was published or last updated. For a developing story, an older article can be accurate for its original timestamp but no longer describe the latest situation.
- Corroborate important information. Check a second reliable source, preferably the primary document or organization involved. Compare the underlying facts rather than counting how many sites repeat the same wording.
- Record what remains uncertain. If the link is inaccessible, missing, unrelated or ambiguous, mark the claim as unverified. Do not treat a polished citation label, a familiar logo or a long source list as evidence by itself.

Labels and layouts change. If you do not see a source control, look for an overflow menu, a small numbered marker, a hover target or a link at the bottom of the response. If no usable citation is exposed, use independent verification rather than assuming that the answer used news reporting.
How to test whether a citation really supports a claim
Separate topic overlap from evidence
A source can be about the same event without proving the AI’s statement. For example, an article may report that an agency announced a policy while the generated answer adds an effective date, a numerical threshold or an interpretation that the article never states. Each added detail needs support.
Preserve qualifiers
Watch for words that change meaning: may, could, according to preliminary data, in one region, for subscribers or as of a specific date. If the source is conditional and the AI presents the result as certain, the citation does not support the stronger wording.
Check the unit, scope and time
Confirm that percentages, currencies, locations, populations and dates match. A statistic about one quarter, country or demographic group cannot automatically be generalized to all readers. News stories also evolve; compare the article’s timestamp with the time represented in the answer.
Distinguish reporting from commentary
News analysis, an opinion column and a primary announcement serve different purposes. Identify whether the linked page contains an original document, an eyewitness account, a reporter’s summary or commentary. Use the source type that fits the claim: an official filing for a filing detail, for example, and independent reporting for context about competing accounts.
Read the citation interface carefully
A source preview, publisher logo or page title is useful for orientation, but it may not display the full article or the exact passage used. Select the source so you can inspect the actual page. If a Sources panel contains both “cited” items and “relevant” or additional links, start with the item attached to the sentence; a merely relevant link is not necessarily evidence for that sentence.
On a phone, a citation may open in a new tab, a sheet or an expanded card. On a desktop browser, a hover preview may be available. The interaction is less important than the result: you must be able to identify the publisher, the page, its date and the text supporting the claim. If the interface offers no way to open a source, copy the article title or URL and search the publisher’s site independently.

Do not assume that every link is a news source. Depending on the product, a citation can lead to a government page, a company release, a work file, a search result or another type of document. The source’s identity and purpose determine what it can establish.

Compare multiple cited sources systematically
When an answer provides several links, assess every source on the same four axes:

Do not award extra confidence simply because several links appear. Multiple pages may syndicate the same wire story or repeat an unsourced claim. Independence and direct evidence matter more than the number of URLs.
If sources disagree, compare why. One may describe an earlier stage of an event, use a different definition or report a statement rather than a verified fact. Preserve the disagreement and check the newest authoritative material instead of asking the AI to resolve it without evidence.

What to do when citations are missing, broken or misleading
No citation controls appear
Some responses are generated without web retrieval or do not expose source details. Ask the system to provide sources, but treat any new list as unverified until you open it. For consequential claims, search for the primary document or reputable reporting yourself.
The link is broken or inaccessible
A paywall, login requirement, robots restriction or dead URL prevents you from checking the passage. Find an accessible version from the same publisher or another authoritative source. If you cannot establish what the page said, do not describe the claim as sourced.
The citation points to the wrong passage
Sometimes a source is real but supports only a neighboring statement. Quote or paraphrase the supported portion, then label the AI’s additional inference as unverified. Do not stretch the source to cover it.
The citation appears fabricated
AI systems can produce incorrect or misleading information, including invented citations or references. Warning signs include a publication that cannot be found, a URL whose title does not match the page, a nonexistent article date, or a quoted passage absent from the linked source. Search the publisher’s own site and independent indexes; if the item still cannot be verified, treat the citation as fabricated or unusable.
Use a follow-up prompt without outsourcing verification
You can ask the system to separate each claim from its source, identify the publication date, or explain which sentence a citation supports. That can make checking faster, but the reply is still another generated response. Open the links yourself and test the passages. A request such as “show the exact supporting sentence and any qualifications” is useful for organizing the review; it does not replace reading the source.

Ask for uncertainty explicitly when a source is incomplete: request the claims that are unsupported, the information that may have changed, and the distinction between a primary record and commentary. Then verify those flagged items independently rather than treating the system’s self-assessment as proof.
Platform-specific checking notes
ChatGPT Search
In a search-enabled response, select the citation attached to a sentence to inspect its source; on desktop web, a preview may appear. If the response offers a Sources view, distinguish cited sources from additional relevant links. Open the page rather than relying on the preview, then apply the passage, publisher and date checks above. OpenAI recommends using authoritative material when accuracy matters and warns that search results and citations can be incomplete, outdated or incorrect.
Google AI Overviews
An AI Overview is a generated snapshot, not a replacement for the linked pages. Select the links beneath the overview to read the underlying information. Google advises checking important information in more than one place. The feature’s availability depends on supported geography and language, and help-page settings can change, so another user may see a different interface.
Microsoft Copilot Chat
Use the inline citation beside a statement or open the Sources list at the response’s bottom. First identify the source context: Copilot can draw on web results, work data and memory. A cited work file should be judged as an internal document in that organization’s context, not automatically as public news reporting. Whether you can open it depends on account, subscription and administrator configuration. Microsoft says citations and grounding improve verifiability but that readers should still review sources and confirm critical details.
News-specific checks that prevent common mistakes
Establish the event timeline
Write down the event date, the article’s publication date and any update time. A later answer may combine an early report with a subsequent development. If the source does not make the timeline clear, seek a newer report or a primary statement.
Find the original record
For claims about laws, court decisions, company announcements, election results, safety actions or scientific findings, look for the underlying filing, ruling, release or paper. News coverage can summarize accurately while omitting details that determine scope.
Check attribution
Distinguish what a source observed from what a person said. A sentence such as “officials said” is not the same as independently verified fact. Read whether the article identifies the speaker, provides evidence and reports a response or correction.

Publishers may update a page without changing its URL. Compare the visible update time and the body text. If the AI cites an older version, search for the publisher’s latest account before repeating the claim.

Do not confuse repetition with confirmation
Ten articles that copy one report are still one underlying account. Prefer sources with distinct reporting, direct documents or clearly identified evidence.
A quick verification worksheet
For each consequential claim, capture these fields before sharing the answer:
- AI claim: copy the exact sentence, including numbers and qualifiers.
- Attached source: note the publisher, page title and link shown by the interface.
- Supporting passage: quote or summarize the specific lines that support it.
- Date and scope: record publication or update date, geography, population and time period.
- Independent check: identify a second reliable source or the primary record.
- Status: mark supported, partly supported, contradicted or unverified.
This approach makes uncertainty visible. “Partly supported” is often the correct result when the source confirms the event but not the AI’s added explanation or precision.

When the answer is safe to use—and when to stop
For a low-stakes fact, one accessible source that directly supports the wording may be enough. For health, legal, financial, safety, election or breaking-news claims, require a primary or highly authoritative source and independent corroboration before acting. If the sources disagree, preserve the disagreement in your notes and consult the newest authoritative material rather than asking the AI to choose without evidence.
Never infer reliability from fluent prose, a confident tone, a publisher logo or the number of citations. Reliability comes from a traceable source, a matching passage, appropriate authority, a current date and independent confirmation.

What should I compare between a claim and its source?
Compare the exact wording, numbers, dates, location, population, time period and qualifiers. Read the surrounding passage to see whether the source is conditional, preliminary or limited in scope.
How many sources should I check?
For important information, check another reliable source and, when possible, the primary record. The number of links matters less than whether they are independent and directly support the claim.
What if the cited article is behind a paywall or the link is dead?
Try an accessible version from the same publisher or locate the primary document or another authoritative report. If you cannot inspect what the page said, mark the claim unverified.
