Use a four-part match, not a brand-name assumption: identify the exact accelerator and architecture, operating system, framework release, and runtime or backend version. Check both the framework’s installation requirements and the accelerator vendor’s release-specific compatibility matrix. Install the documented combination, verify that the framework enumerates the device, and run a small representative workload. Device detection proves that the local build can see the accelerator; it does not prove that every operation, model, precision mode, or performance target will work.

What “support” means in practice

AI-framework support is not a yes-or-no property of a framework brand. It belongs to a complete software and hardware configuration. A framework may support one accelerator family but not another, or support the same device only on a particular operating system, runtime release, or framework build.

Separate these questions before you make a decision:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Recognition: can the installed framework and backend enumerate the accelerator?
  • Functional support: do the operators, kernels, libraries, data types, and model components your application needs run on it?
  • Platform support: is that combination supported on your operating system and release?
  • Performance suitability: does it meet your memory, throughput, latency, and precision requirements?

An official compatibility entry is strong evidence for the stated configuration, but it is not a promise that every workload performs equally well. Conversely, a device that appears in a system query may still fail when a model invokes an unsupported operator.

It also helps to distinguish supported from tested. A vendor may list a model and framework version as supported while documenting limits for particular kernels, sparse operations, mixed-precision modes, or operating systems. Your decision should therefore have two parts: whether the combination is officially listed and whether your own workload has been validated.

Record the exact configuration first

Write down the values below before opening an installation page. “An AMD GPU,” “Linux,” or “the latest framework” is not specific enough for a compatibility check.

Item What to record Why it matters
Accelerator Exact model and architecture or generation Compatibility matrices often list individual models or GPU families, not every device from a vendor.
Operating system Operating system, edition, and release; include WSL2 when applicable Drivers, runtimes, and framework packages can differ by platform.
Framework Name and exact version Support can change between framework releases.
Runtime/backend CUDA, ROCm, DirectML, or another backend and its version The backend is the layer that connects framework code to the accelerator.
Driver Installed driver version, when the framework documentation lists it A correct framework package can still fail with an incompatible or missing driver.
Language/runtime Python or other language version and environment manager, if listed as a prerequisite Official packages may support only particular interpreter versions.

Also note whether the machine is bare metal, a virtual machine, WSL2, or a container. Passthrough and container access can affect visibility even when the host has a supported card. Record the exact package channel, wheel tag, image tag, or lockfile used, not merely the command’s package name. Keep this record with the environment name or container tag. It makes later troubleshooting reproducible and prevents accidentally testing a different interpreter than the one used by your application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Follow the two-source check

You need complementary evidence from the framework vendor and the accelerator vendor. Neither source is sufficient by itself.

1. Read the framework’s official installation and hardware pages

Look for four things:

  • Supported accelerator backends and platforms.
  • The exact installation command, package index, wheel, or container for the backend.
  • Minimum operating-system, driver, runtime, and language requirements.
  • Known limitations or separate instructions for particular operating systems.

Check whether the page applies to your framework release. Installation pages are often updated for new versions while older pages remain available, and a command that is correct for one release can install an incompatible combination for another. Look for a version selector, release note, or compatibility table linked from the installation guide.

Do not infer accelerator support from the framework’s general availability. A framework may have a CUDA-oriented API, for example, while your installed build uses a different backend. The API name alone does not identify the hardware path.

2. Read the accelerator vendor’s release-specific matrix

Next, open the vendor’s compatibility matrix for the runtime release you intend to use. Match the exact accelerator model or architecture and operating-system release, then confirm that the same release or linked support data covers your framework version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A row for a similar GPU, another operating-system edition, or an earlier runtime release is not proof for your setup. Compatibility tables are versioned evidence, not timeless claims. AMD’s ROCm matrices, for example, enumerate framework versions and supported GPU families for a particular ROCm release; the surfaced ROCm 7.0.1 matrix must not be carried forward automatically to another release.

When a matrix lists a family rather than a product name, verify the vendor’s model-to-architecture mapping. Two cards with similar marketing names may use different architectures, while products with different names may share one. If the table links to a separate operating-system or framework page, follow that link and check that the qualifications remain true for your exact release.

Install the documented combination

Once both sources agree, install the combination they describe rather than assembling packages independently.

  1. Choose the supported framework build. Use the package, wheel, channel, or container associated with the backend and framework versions in the documentation.
  2. Prepare the driver and runtime. Install the required accelerator driver and runtime version for your operating system before testing the framework.
  3. Use an isolated environment. A fresh virtual environment or container prevents an older backend, conflicting library, or unrelated interpreter from being loaded first.
  4. Verify the active versions. Run the framework’s version command and the operating system or vendor utility specified by the installation guide. Record the output with your configuration notes.
  5. Prefer official containers when offered. AMD recommends its prebuilt ROCm Docker images as an easier way to obtain a matched environment. Containers still require a compatible host driver and supported hardware.

Do not assume that a container removes host requirements. The host driver, device permissions, kernel support, and container runtime still have to expose the accelerator. In a shared server, confirm that the intended device is passed through and that another process has not exhausted its memory.

AMD’s ROCm 7.2.2 framework installation guide, dated January 29, 2026, applies to Linux and states that each ROCm release has specific hardware and software configurations. It directs users to system requirements and prerequisites, lists PyTorch, TensorFlow, and JAX among supported frameworks, and points to framework-specific installation documentation. Treat that release date and Linux scope as part of the claim; do not assume the same instructions apply to another operating system or ROCm release.

Verify that the framework sees the accelerator

TensorFlow check

TensorFlow’s official guide provides this direct enumeration test:

python3 -c "import tensorflow as tf; print(tf.config.list_physical_devices('GPU'))"

A non-empty list shows that this TensorFlow process can discover one or more GPU devices. An empty list means the process did not expose a usable GPU through that build and environment; it does not identify the exact cause.

Run the command with the same interpreter, virtual environment, container, and user account that will run the application. Testing from a different shell can hide path, permissions, or library differences. If several devices are present, record their identities and confirm that the framework is selecting the intended one rather than a different card.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

TensorFlow’s documented GPU instructions cover supported Linux/CUDA and WSL2 setups. They state that there is currently no official GPU support for macOS, and that TensorFlow 2.10 was the last release with native-Windows GPU support. For newer Windows setups, the guide directs users toward WSL2 or an optional DirectML plugin route. These statements are release-sensitive, so check the current TensorFlow guide before installing.

Other frameworks and backends

Use the device-enumeration command or API documented for your exact framework build. Do not copy a check written for another backend and interpret its result as universal evidence. In PyTorch, for example, ROCm support uses familiar CUDA-named interfaces in parts of the API. That naming convention does not mean the machine has an NVIDIA or CUDA backend; the installed PyTorch build and its active device backend determine what is actually being used. PyTorch’s official HIP/ROCm note explains this relationship.

When a framework offers multiple builds, confirm that your shell is importing the intended build. A system-wide installation can shadow the package in your virtual environment, producing confusing results such as a successful import but no accelerator. Print the framework version, backend version, and device name from the same process that runs the test, and save that output.

  1. Load a small model or create a minimal tensor operation supported by your framework.
  2. Explicitly select the accelerator device using the framework’s documented device-selection method.
  3. Run a few warm-up iterations so compilation, kernel loading, and memory allocation occur before you measure anything.
  4. Check the process output, error logs, and device utilization while the operation runs.
  5. Exercise the data type and operators your production model requires, not only a trivial matrix multiply.

Include preprocessing, host-to-device transfers, and postprocessing if those stages affect your latency target. A model may execute on the accelerator while spending most of its time moving data or compiling kernels. For inference, test the expected batch sizes and concurrency. For training, include forward, backward, optimizer, checkpoint, and mixed-precision paths if they are part of the job.

A model can pass a basic test and still fail later because one layer, custom operation, sparse path, or precision mode lacks backend support. Keep the smallest failing example; it is more useful for diagnosing an operator gap than a full application trace.

If you need a performance decision, benchmark the representative workload with fixed batch size, input shape, precision, and concurrency. AMD recommends running system-health benchmarks after installing ROCm and the desired libraries and before AI workloads. A benchmark result is meaningful only when those conditions and software versions are recorded. Compare like with like: changing the framework build, driver, input shape, or power setting can invalidate an otherwise attractive number.

Interpret results with a support matrix

Use the following decision table for the evidence you have collected:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Framework check Vendor matrix Workload test Conclusion
Device absent Any status Cannot run Local installation is not ready. Fix the environment before judging model compatibility.
Device present Exact row matches model, OS, runtime, and framework Representative workload succeeds Strong evidence of functional support for the tested workload.
Device present Exact row matches Workload fails Investigate an operator, library, precision, memory, or model-specific limitation.
Device present No exact row or only a similar device Small test succeeds Experimental evidence, not an officially supported configuration.
Device present Exact row matches Workload succeeds but is slow Support is established; performance suitability is not.

For side-by-side choices, compare six axes: exact accelerator coverage, operating system and release, framework version, runtime/backend and driver version, availability of an official package or container, and validation of the operations your workload needs.

Add a seventh practical question: how easy is it to reproduce the setup? An officially supported wheel or container can reduce maintenance compared with a hand-built stack, even when both pass the same small test. Also consider the upgrade path. A configuration that works today but has no documented next runtime or framework release may impose more operational risk.

Platform and version caveats that commonly change the answer

Operating-system differences

The same accelerator can be supported on Linux but not on native Windows or macOS for a particular framework release. WSL2 may provide a supported path where native Windows does not, but it introduces its own driver and integration requirements. Treat “Windows support” and “WSL2 support” as separate entries when reading documentation.

Framework-release differences

Installing the newest framework with an older runtime matrix, or an older framework with a newer runtime, can leave you outside the tested combinations. Always match versions in the same documented row or installation path.

Backend naming differences

Framework APIs sometimes preserve names from an original backend for compatibility. A CUDA-shaped function name is not proof of an NVIDIA device, and a generic “GPU” label does not prove that every GPU family is supported. Identify the backend from the installed package and runtime documentation.

Architecture versus model name

Two products sold under different names may share an architecture, while two products in the same product family may not. Matrices may list either individual models or architecture families; match the terminology used in the matrix and verify that your exact model is included.

Optional plugins and alternate paths

An optional plugin can provide a route that is different from the framework’s primary backend. TensorFlow’s DirectML option on newer Windows systems is an example of a separate path rather than proof of native CUDA support. Evaluate its operator coverage, supported framework releases, and maintenance status independently.

Troubleshoot a missing or unusable accelerator

The framework returns no device

  • Confirm that the driver and runtime are installed and visible to the operating system.
  • Check that the active environment contains the framework build intended for your backend.
  • Verify that the framework version, backend version, operating system, and accelerator appear together in the official requirements.
  • Inspect for conflicting installations. TensorFlow notes that an undetected component or a conflict with an existing CUDA installation can prevent GPU discovery.
  • Repeat the test inside the documented container or a clean environment to distinguish host configuration errors from package errors.
  • Check permissions, device passthrough, environment variables, and whether another process has reserved the accelerator.

Change one variable at a time. Reinstalling the driver, framework, and runtime simultaneously can make the symptom disappear without revealing which mismatch caused it. Save error messages and version output before making changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The device appears, but model execution fails

  • Reduce the example to the smallest failing operator or layer.
  • Check whether that operator, data type, or precision mode is supported by the backend.
  • Confirm that all companion libraries match the framework and runtime versions.
  • Test with a supported fallback device only to isolate the model issue; do not treat a CPU fallback as accelerator support.

The workload runs but is unexpectedly slow

  • Verify that tensors and model parameters are actually placed on the accelerator rather than silently falling back to the CPU.
  • Check memory pressure, batch size, precision, and data-transfer time.
  • Run the vendor’s health or diagnostic benchmark and compare only with results collected under the same software and workload conditions.
  • Confirm that synchronization and timing methods are correct; asynchronous accelerator work can make naive wall-clock measurements misleading.

The setup worked before an upgrade

Recheck the release-specific matrix after every framework, driver, or runtime upgrade. Capture the previous working versions, then change one component at a time so the incompatibility is identifiable. Pin the known-good environment for production while you test the newer stack separately.

Document a defensible compatibility result

For a team decision or deployment record, save:

  • Accelerator model and architecture.
  • Operating system and release, including whether WSL2 or a container was used.
  • Framework, runtime/backend, driver, and language versions.
  • The exact installation command or container identifier.
  • Output from the framework device-enumeration check.
  • The representative model, operators, precision, batch size, and outcome.
  • Any unsupported operations, fallbacks, warnings, or performance limits.

Label the result as officially listed, locally detected, workload validated, or performance validated. These labels prevent a successful import from being mistaken for production readiness. Include the date you checked the documentation and links to the exact versioned pages, because matrices, drivers, and framework builds change.

A reusable pre-install checklist

  • Exact accelerator model and architecture recorded.
  • Operating system, edition, and release recorded.
  • Framework and desired version selected.
  • Runtime/backend and driver versions identified.
  • Framework installation page checked.
  • Accelerator vendor’s matrix checked for the same release.
  • Official package, wheel, or container selected.
  • Clean environment prepared.
  • Framework device query succeeds.
  • Representative model and required operators tested.
  • Health benchmark or performance test run when performance matters.
  • Results and version details saved for future upgrades.

If the checklist stops at device enumeration, it is incomplete for production. Add at least one test that exercises the model’s unusual operators, required precision, expected memory footprint, and deployment interface.

Bottom line

To establish whether an AI framework supports your accelerator, match the complete configuration in both sets of official documentation, install the prescribed build, verify device enumeration, and run the workload you actually care about. A detected device is necessary evidence, but only a successful representative workload—and, when relevant, a controlled benchmark—answers whether the setup is usable for your application.

How do I check whether my GPU is compatible with PyTorch or TensorFlow?

Record the exact GPU model, architecture, operating system, framework version, runtime/backend, and driver. Match them against the framework installation page and the accelerator vendor’s release-specific matrix, then install the documented build and run the framework’s device check.

What should I do if TensorFlow lists no GPU?

Use the same interpreter and environment as the application, then verify the driver, runtime, framework build, operating system, and CUDA requirements. TensorFlow notes that missing components or conflicts with an existing CUDA installation can prevent discovery. A clean environment or documented container can isolate the problem.

Is a CUDA-named PyTorch API proof that I have an NVIDIA GPU?

No. PyTorch’s HIP/ROCm support retains CUDA-shaped names in parts of its API. The installed PyTorch build and active backend, not the function name, determine which accelerator path is in use.

Can I use TensorFlow GPU acceleration on Windows or macOS?

Support depends on the release and path. TensorFlow’s guide says there is currently no official GPU support for macOS and that TensorFlow 2.10 was the last release with native-Windows GPU support. Newer Windows use is directed toward WSL2 or an optional DirectML route; check the current guide.

Is an AMD ROCm compatibility entry valid for every ROCm release?

No. ROCm matrices are release-specific. For example, a ROCm 7.0.1 entry should not automatically be applied to ROCm 7.2.2 or another release. Match the exact runtime version, model, operating system, and framework row.

Do official containers eliminate compatibility problems?

They can provide a matched framework and runtime environment, and AMD recommends prebuilt ROCm Docker images for ease of use. The host still needs a supported driver, hardware, kernel integration, permissions, and device passthrough.

How can I tell whether the accelerator is actually being used?

After enumeration, run a small model or tensor workload with explicit device selection. Monitor device utilization, memory, logs, and placement, and test the operators and precision used in production. A CPU fallback can make a program appear successful without using the accelerator.

What evidence is enough to call a setup production-ready?

Use four labels: officially listed, locally detected, workload validated, and performance validated. Production readiness normally requires the exact configuration to be listed, the device to enumerate, the representative workload to succeed without unwanted fallbacks, and controlled benchmarks to meet your latency, throughput, and memory targets.

The Bottom Line

Match the exact accelerator, OS, framework, and backend versions in both official documents; install that combination; verify device discovery; then test the real workload. Enumeration is necessary, while workload and performance tests establish practical suitability.
