An AI app crashing at the same moment as a black screen, driver reset, restart, or blue screen is a useful clue, not proof of causation. To test the connection, record each failure, correlate it with Windows events, compare equivalent runs with the app open and closed, and repeat the test in a Windows clean-boot environment. Then check the graphics-driver state before changing anything.

This process separates four possibilities: an app-specific trigger, interference from another startup program, a graphics-driver problem, or a hardware/Windows fault. Microsoft notes that unexpected restarts and graphics-device errors can involve software, drivers, or hardware, so timing alone cannot assign blame.

What counts as a GPU driver crash?

Start by describing the symptom precisely. “The AI app crashed” is different from “the display went black and recovered,” “Windows restarted,” or “a blue screen appeared.” Each observation points to a different layer of the system and should be logged separately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Observed symptom What it may indicate What it does not prove
Only the AI app closes or becomes unresponsive An application fault, an app-triggered driver path, or a conflict with another program That the GPU driver or the app is solely responsible
Screen goes black, flickers, or recovers while Windows remains running A graphics-driver reset or display-device problem That the AI app caused the reset
Windows restarts unexpectedly A hardware, driver, or software failure; Microsoft lists all three categories as possible causes That the workload which happened to be running is the root cause
Blue screen or stop-code screen A system-level failure requiring the stop code and event details That the foreground app is at fault
Device Manager shows error code 43 The graphics device’s driver reported that the device is not working properly; Microsoft lists driver failure and hardware problems among the possibilities That an AI application caused the device state

For blue screens, Microsoft recommends checking the Windows System log for critical errors around the same time as the failure. That correlation is evidence gathering, not a causal finding. See Microsoft’s blue-screen guidance and its unexpected-restart troubleshooting.

Make an incident log before changing settings

Do not begin by reinstalling drivers or changing several AI settings. First capture a baseline. A short, consistent log lets you compare attempts and gives a support engineer something more useful than “it crashes sometimes.”

  1. Record the Windows edition and build. Open Settings > System > About and note the edition and OS build.
  2. Record the GPU identity. In Device Manager > Display adapters, note the exact adapter name. If the computer has integrated and discrete graphics, record both.
  3. Record the graphics-driver version and date. In Device Manager, open the adapter’s Properties > Driver tab. Capture this before attempting a rollback, uninstall, or reinstall.
  4. Record the AI app and version. Use the app’s About screen or its installer information. Include whether it is a native desktop app, a browser-based tool, or running through a local model framework.
  5. List relevant settings. Note hardware acceleration, GPU selection, model, precision or performance mode, display arrangement, overlays, recording tools, and any recently changed option. Do not assume a setting is irrelevant simply because the app still opens.
  6. Write the exact time. Use the computer’s local time and include the date. For each attempt, record when the workload started and when the symptom appeared.
  7. Describe the symptom in one sentence. For example: “At 14:32, image generation made both monitors black for six seconds, then the desktop returned,” or “At 14:41, the app closed but Windows stayed responsive.”
  8. Record what recovered. Note whether you had to relaunch the app, sign in again, reboot Windows, or power-cycle the computer.

A useful entry looks like this:

Date/time: 2026-10-16 14:32 UTC
Windows: edition and build
GPU: exact adapter name
Driver: version and date
AI app: name and version
Workload/settings: model, hardware acceleration, GPU selection
Symptom: black screen, app crash, restart, or blue screen
Recovery: automatic, app relaunch, reboot, or power cycle
Windows events: IDs and messages found near 14:32

Keep the wording consistent across attempts. Changing the description from “crash” to “black screen” later can hide an important distinction.

Check Windows Event Viewer at the recorded time

Event Viewer can show whether Windows logged a display, driver, application, or shutdown event near the failure. It cannot, by itself, prove which component initiated the problem.

  1. Press Win+R, enter eventvwr.msc, and press Enter.
  2. Open Windows Logs > System. Choose Filter Current Log if you need to narrow the view to the date and to Critical, Error, or Warning levels.
  3. Inspect a window around the incident, not just the exact minute. Note the event source, event ID, level, full message, and timestamp. Export or copy the relevant details into your incident log.
  4. Open Windows Logs > Application as well when only the AI app closed. Look for an application-error event at the same time and record the faulting application and module fields when present.
  5. Compare several incidents. A single event that appears once is weaker evidence than the same source and message recurring whenever the same workload fails.

Microsoft’s guidance for blue-screen and unexpected-restart problems emphasizes checking system events in the same timeframe. Treat “same timeframe” as correlation: an event that follows a crash may be a consequence of it, and an event that precedes it may still be unrelated.

Check Code Integrity only for policy-blocking clues

If you suspect Windows Driver Policy blocked a driver, open Applications and Services Logs > Microsoft > Windows > CodeIntegrity > Operational. Microsoft identifies event 3076 as an audited driver and event 3077 as a blocked driver in enforcement mode. The event details can identify the driver and process involved.

These Code Integrity events describe policy blocking. They are not the standard signature of a GPU timeout, and finding one does not establish that the AI app caused a graphics crash. Record the event only when its timestamp and driver/process details match your reproduction.

Run a controlled app-open versus app-closed comparison

The most useful practical test is to compare otherwise similar runs. This is a diagnostic inference, not a Microsoft-provided AI-app test, so control the conditions carefully.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Reboot Windows. A fresh boot removes leftover state from the previous attempt. Do not install updates or change several settings during the comparison.
  2. Choose a repeatable workload. Use the same model, input, duration, resolution, and hardware-acceleration setting. A short workload that can be repeated is better than an uncontrolled long session.
  3. Run the workload with the AI app closed. Use another GPU workload that exercises the same adapter if one is already part of your normal workflow, or simply observe whether the system remains stable at idle. Record the duration and conditions.
  4. Run the equivalent workload with the AI app open. Keep other programs, monitors, overlays, and peripherals unchanged. Record the exact start time and symptom if it fails.
  5. Repeat the pair. One successful or failed attempt is not enough to establish a pattern. If the app-open run fails repeatedly while the matched app-closed run does not, you have stronger app-associated evidence, not proof of root cause.
  6. Change one variable at a time. If you disable hardware acceleration, change the model, or select another GPU, start a new comparison set and label it clearly.
Comparison result Reasonable interpretation Next step
Fails only when the AI app is open, across repeated matched runs An app-associated trigger is plausible; the trigger could still be a driver path or interaction with another component Capture app logs and the smallest repeatable sequence; contact the app vendor after basic isolation
Fails with the app closed and open The issue is not specific to the app’s foreground state Investigate driver, startup software, Windows, thermals, power, and hardware evidence
Failure disappears after reboot but returns later Accumulated state or a background component may be involved Repeat after a clean boot and document which services were running
Results vary when multiple settings change The test is confounded Return to the baseline and change one setting per test

Use a Windows clean boot to test background interference

A clean boot starts Windows with only essential drivers and startup programs. Microsoft describes it as a way to determine whether a background application or service is interfering, with selective re-enabling to isolate the conflict. A clean boot does not prove that the AI app is innocent or guilty; it tests one class of competing software.

Prepare for the clean boot

  • Save work and make sure you know how to return to Normal startup.
  • Close the AI app and record the current driver version, app version, and last failure time.
  • Expect some startup utilities, launchers, overlays, synchronization tools, monitoring tools, and security-related conveniences to be unavailable during the test.

Enter clean-boot mode

  1. Press Win+R, type msconfig, and press Enter.
  2. On the Services tab, select Hide all Microsoft services. This prevents you from disabling Microsoft’s services accidentally.
  3. Select Disable all for the remaining services, then open the Startup tab and choose Open Task Manager.
  4. In Task Manager’s Startup list, disable enabled nonessential startup items. Close Task Manager.
  5. In System Configuration, select OK and restart when prompted.

Labels can differ slightly between Windows 10 and Windows 11, but the clean-boot procedure is covered by Microsoft’s clean-boot instructions.

Reproduce and interpret the result

  1. After the restart, verify the GPU and driver still appear normally in Device Manager.
  2. Run the same short AI workload used in the baseline. Record the time and symptom exactly as before.
  3. If the failure disappears, re-enable disabled services and startup items in a controlled sequence, restarting and testing between groups. When the failure returns, split that group into smaller sets until you identify a likely conflict.
  4. If the failure remains in clean boot, Microsoft says the problem is not caused by interference from another app or service. That still leaves the AI app, another driver, Windows, or hardware as possible causes.
  5. Restore Normal startup after testing by opening msconfig, selecting Normal startup on the General tab, applying the change, and restarting.

“If your app still doesn’t run as expected in a clean boot environment, then your problem is not caused by interference from another app or service.” — Microsoft Support

Check the graphics driver before rolling back or reinstalling

If the issue began immediately after a driver change, or Windows reports a graphics-device error, capture the current state before modifying it. A rollback can remove useful evidence if you do not record the original version first.

Look for error code 43

  1. Open Device Manager > Display adapters.
  2. Open the adapter’s Properties and read the Device status box.
  3. If it reports code 43, copy the complete text and record the adapter name, driver provider, version, and date.

Microsoft defines code 43 as the graphics device’s driver reporting that the device is not working properly. Its listed possibilities include a driver or driver-software failure and a hardware problem. The linked Microsoft article is labeled for Windows 10, so confirm that its steps apply to your Windows edition before proceeding: Fix graphics device problems with error code 43.

Change the driver in a controlled order

  1. Check whether the problem started after a specific driver update. If so, a supported rollback may be appropriate; record the before-and-after versions.
  2. If no rollback is available, use the supported update or uninstall/reinstall path for your system. Restart when Windows requests it.
  3. Prefer the package supplied on the official support site for the GPU manufacturer or, on a laptop, the computer manufacturer. Microsoft identifies AMD, Intel, and NVIDIA among common GPU manufacturers and provides driver-resource guidance in its DirectX 12 for Windows Subsystems article.
  4. After the change, repeat the same workload and log the result. Do not claim the driver caused the problem merely because the crash stopped after reinstalling; the reinstall may have reset corrupted state or changed another component.

A driver change is evidence only when the timing, version difference, and repeatable behavior are documented. It is not a substitute for the app-open/app-closed and clean-boot comparisons.

Interpret the evidence without overclaiming

Use the pattern across tests rather than a single dramatic failure. The following framework keeps the conclusion proportional to what the tests can establish.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Pattern across tests What you can say What you should not say
Repeated app-only failures; matched runs without the app remain stable; clean boot does not remove the failure The AI app is a strong trigger and should be investigated with its vendor, logs, and reproduction steps “The app definitely damaged the driver” or “the app is the sole cause”
Failure disappears in clean boot and returns after one startup item is re-enabled That startup item or service is a likely interfering component That the AI app caused the conflict
Failure persists with the app closed and in clean boot The issue is broader than the AI app’s normal foreground operation; driver, Windows, or hardware investigation is warranted That the AI app is exonerated from every possible interaction
Code Integrity event 3077 names a blocked driver at the reproduction time Windows policy blocked a driver and the event identifies a driver/process relationship worth investigating That event 3077 is a GPU timeout or proof of app responsibility
Error code 43 remains after a supported driver change The device still reports a problem; hardware and driver causes both remain possible That replacing the GPU is automatically justified

Microsoft’s support material does not provide a prevalence statistic for AI apps causing GPU driver crashes. Treat your own repeatable pattern as case-specific evidence, not as a general frequency claim.

Prepare an escalation package

Escalation is faster when another person can reproduce the observation without guessing what happened. Send a compact package rather than a long screen recording with no timestamps.

  • System identity: Windows edition/build, computer model if relevant, GPU model, and driver provider, version, and date.
  • Application identity: AI app name and version, installation type, model or workload, and relevant acceleration or GPU-selection settings.
  • Symptom: app-only crash, display reset, black screen, restart, or blue screen; include any stop code.
  • Timeline: exact local timestamps for at least one app-open run, one app-closed or matched run, and any clean-boot run.
  • Event details: source, event ID, level, and full message from System, Application, or Code Integrity logs.
  • Reproduction: the shortest sequence that reliably triggers the failure, including input, model, duration, and whether a reboot is required.
  • Changes tested: clean boot result, driver version before and after any change, and which startup item or service was re-enabled when a conflict returned.

Contact the AI app vendor when the failure reproduces only with that app after basic isolation and you can provide a small repeatable sequence. Contact the computer or GPU vendor when the failure persists with the app closed, appears in clean boot, code 43 remains, or event details point toward the device or driver.

Common diagnostic mistakes

  • Blaming the foreground app because it was visible. A GPU workload can expose a pre-existing driver or hardware fault without causing it.
  • Calling every black screen a driver crash. Record whether Windows recovered, whether audio continued, and whether a reboot was required.
  • Changing multiple variables between attempts. You cannot tell which change affected the result.
  • Ignoring background software. Overlays, monitoring utilities, launchers, and recording tools can interact with graphics workloads; clean boot is designed to test this interference class.
  • Reinstalling before recording the driver. The original version and date may be important to determine whether a change coincided with the first failure.
  • Using a Code Integrity event as a universal explanation. Events 3076 and 3077 concern driver-policy auditing or blocking, not every graphics timeout.
  • Buying replacement hardware as the first step. The cited Windows guidance lists hardware as one possibility, but it does not justify a replacement GPU or power supply without supporting evidence.
  • Reporting only “it happens under AI.” Include the exact workload, settings, timestamps, and matched control run so another person can test the same conditions.

A repeatable decision workflow

  1. Log Windows, GPU, driver, app version, settings, exact time, and symptom.
  2. Inspect System and Application logs around that time and save relevant event details.
  3. Repeat after a reboot with the AI app closed, then run the same controlled workload with it open.
  4. If another program may be involved, perform a clean boot and re-enable items systematically.
  5. If Windows reports code 43 or the issue follows a driver change, capture the current version and use a supported manufacturer package for rollback, update, or reinstall.
  6. Compare the patterns and state only what the evidence supports.
  7. Escalate with the complete timeline and smallest repeatable sequence to the app vendor or the computer/GPU vendor that matches the remaining evidence.
