Open Task Manager → Details while the app is running and read its Architecture column. ARM64 means the process is native to the Arm laptop; x86 or x64 means Windows is running it through emulation. ARM64 (x64 compatible) identifies an Arm64EC-compatible process that can combine native Arm64EC code with emulated x64 code, so it is not proof that every part of the app is native.
What this check tells you
Windows on Arm laptops can run software compiled for different processor instruction sets. An Arm64 build executes directly on the laptop’s Arm processor. Traditional 32-bit x86 and 64-bit x64 builds can also run, but Windows translates their instructions through its user-mode emulation system. The process architecture shown by Task Manager is the quickest built-in way to tell which situation applies to a running app.
This is a process-level check, not a complete compatibility or performance test. A modern app may start several processes, load plug-ins compiled for different architectures, or rely on a driver that has separate requirements. You should therefore inspect all relevant processes and then check dependencies before deciding whether an app is fully Arm-compatible.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCheck the Architecture column in Task Manager
- Start the app. Leave the window open so its process is visible while you inspect it. If the app uses a launcher, helper, updater, or plug-in host, keep those components running too.
- Open Task Manager. Press
Ctrl+Shift+Esc, or right-click the taskbar and choose Task Manager if that option is available in your Windows build. - Open Details. The Processes page groups activity by app; the Details page lists individual executable processes, which is the level needed for this check.
- Show Architecture. Right-click any column heading in the Details list, choose the command for selecting or managing columns, and enable Architecture. The exact wording and menu placement can vary between Windows builds.
- Find the process. Match the app’s name, publisher, or executable name. If the app has several rows, inspect the main process and each helper or plug-in process that matters to the feature you use.
- Read the value. Use the interpretation table below rather than relying on the app’s name, installer, or download location.
Architecture labels and their meaning
| Task Manager value | What it indicates on Windows on Arm | How to describe execution |
|---|---|---|
| ARM64 | The process is built for Arm64. | Native Arm64 execution for that process. |
| x86 | The process is a 32-bit Intel-compatible build. | Runs through Windows user-mode emulation. |
| x64 | The process is a 64-bit Intel/AMD-compatible build. | Runs through Windows user-mode emulation. |
| ARM64 (x64 compatible) | The process is compatible with Arm64EC and can contain Arm64EC and x64 portions. | Mixed execution is possible: Arm64EC portions run natively, while x64 portions are emulated. |
An ARM64 result establishes that the process itself is native Arm64. It does not establish that every DLL, plug-in, child process, or driver used by the app is Arm64. Conversely, an x86 or x64 result establishes that the listed process is being emulated; it does not mean every component associated with the product is emulated, because another component may run in a separate native process.

How to interpret ARM64 (x64 compatible) and Arm64EC
Arm64EC is Microsoft’s transition technology for Windows apps on Arm. Developers can compile some modules as Arm64EC while retaining x64 modules in the same application. The native portions can call into x64 code, allowing a product to move to Arm64 incrementally instead of rebuilding every dependency at once.
That is why ARM64 (x64 compatible) needs more careful wording than either ARM64 or x64. You can accurately say that the process supports Arm64EC and has native Arm64EC code, but you cannot call the entire process fully native based on that label alone. An x64 plug-in, extension, or library loaded into it still executes through emulation. The amount of native versus emulated code can differ between releases and between features.
For a simple user-facing answer, report the exact label and its limitation: “Task Manager identifies this process as ARM64 (x64 compatible); it can run native Arm64EC code, but x64 components in the process remain emulated.” This is more precise than classifying it simply as native or emulated.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Inspect every relevant process
Many applications do not consist of one executable. A browser may use separate renderer, GPU, crash-reporting, and update processes. Creative tools commonly start plug-in hosts. Games may use launchers, anti-cheat services, or a separate game executable. Check the process that performs the work you care about, not only the first process that appears after launching.
- Record the architecture of the main application process.
- Check child processes that handle rendering, media codecs, plug-ins, synchronization, or a specialized feature.
- Look for a separate x86 or x64 plug-in host inside an otherwise ARM64 application.
- Do not infer a service’s architecture from the visible app window; services can run under different executables and account contexts.
If the app has both native and emulated processes, describe it as a mixed installation or workload. The architecture column reports each running process, not a single architecture rating for the whole product.
What the label does not tell you
It is not a performance benchmark
Native Arm64 execution generally avoids the translation overhead associated with emulation, but architecture alone cannot predict frame rates, battery life, startup time, or sustained speed. Workload, compiler optimizations, memory use, graphics APIs, thermal limits, and the particular laptop all matter. An emulated app can be usable, while a native app can still perform poorly because of an inefficient workload or an unsupported feature.
Windows 11 version 24H2 includes Prism on Arm PCs to improve the performance of emulated applications. That is a platform capability, not a guarantee for a particular app, build, device, or workload. If performance matters, measure the exact task on your own Windows build after confirming the architecture.

It is not a compatibility guarantee
A process can launch and display an ARM64 label while a feature fails later because a plug-in, codec, service, or driver is unavailable. Conversely, an x64 label does not mean the app is unusable; Windows supports user-mode x86 and x64 emulation on Arm. Treat the label as the first diagnostic fact, then verify the components needed for your workflow.
It cannot be inferred from distribution
The Microsoft Store, an installer filename, an app’s marketing name, or successful installation does not prove that the executable is native Arm64. The running process is the authoritative quick check for the copy currently loaded.
Check the executable directly when Task Manager is insufficient
Task Manager is intended for ordinary troubleshooting. Developers and IT staff who need to inspect a file that is not currently running can use the Microsoft linker dump tool from a developer command prompt.
- Open a Developer Command Prompt for Visual Studio or another environment that provides the
linkutility. - Run
link /dump /headers pathtoapp.exe, replacing the path with the executable you want to examine. - Read the PE header and machine information reported for the image. The machine value helps distinguish Arm64, x86, x64, and special mixed-binary formats.
- Interpret ARM64X and related headers carefully. Mixed binaries can contain more than one machine representation, so a single header value may not describe every code path or dependency.
This file-level method answers what was built into that executable image. It does not show which plug-ins were loaded at runtime, whether a child process is emulated, or whether a required kernel driver exists. For those questions, combine the header inspection with Task Manager and the publisher’s support information.

Check drivers and peripherals separately
Windows on Arm emulation applies to user-mode x86 and x64 software. Kernel-mode drivers must be compiled for Arm64; they cannot simply be covered by the same user-mode emulation layer. This distinction explains why an app may open normally but fail when it accesses a device or installs a low-level component.
Check the hardware maker or app publisher when the workflow depends on any of the following:
- Printers, scanners, audio interfaces, capture cards, or other USB devices with custom drivers.
- VPN, security, virtualization, storage-filter, or backup software that installs kernel components.
- Specialized graphics, measurement, laboratory, or industrial hardware.
- Anti-cheat or other game components that operate at kernel level.
Ask specifically for an Arm64-compatible driver and confirm support for your Windows edition and build. A native ARM64 app cannot make an unavailable driver work, and an emulated app cannot substitute for a missing Arm64 kernel component.

Confirm the app’s Arm support and required features
Microsoft publishes native Arm64 examples such as Microsoft 365 apps including Teams, PowerPoint, Outlook, Word, Excel, OneDrive, and OneNote, along with Chrome, Slack, Spotify, Zoom, WhatsApp, Blender, Affinity Suite, and DaVinci Resolve. This is an example set rather than a permanent, exhaustive catalog. Publishers can change architecture support between releases, so verify the current version when the distinction matters.
For games and specialist software, check the publisher’s compatibility statement and current system requirements. Microsoft’s Windows Arm-based PCs guidance also points to Works on WoA, a community-maintained open-source compatibility listing to which Microsoft contributes data. Use that list as a lead, then confirm the publisher’s current requirements, especially for anti-cheat, launchers, peripherals, and online services.
Compare two app versions or editions correctly
When deciding between an Arm64 build and an x86/x64 build, compare the complete workflow rather than the installer label. Use this checklist:
| Comparison point | Question to answer | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Process architecture | Does the main process show ARM64, x86, x64, or ARM64 (x64 compatible)? | Identifies native, emulated, or mixed execution for the running process. |
| Child processes and plug-ins | Do rendering, codec, extension, and helper processes use compatible architectures? | A single emulated or incompatible component can affect a feature. |
| Drivers and peripherals | Are every required kernel driver and device supported on Arm64? | User-mode emulation does not provide missing Arm64 kernel drivers. |
| Functionality | Do the exact features, file formats, services, and integrations work? | Architecture status does not prove feature completeness. |
| Observed workload | Does the task meet your speed, battery, and reliability needs on your laptop? | Architecture is not a substitute for testing the workload. |
Troubleshoot common ambiguous results
The Architecture column is missing
Stay on Details, right-click a column heading, open the column-selection menu, and enable Architecture. Windows builds use slightly different labels for this command. If the column does not appear immediately, maximize Task Manager or widen the list so additional columns are visible.
You cannot find the app’s process
Sort by Name, start the app again, and watch for a newly created row. Expand your search to the executable name shown in the app’s installation folder. Launchers often exit after starting the real application, so inspect the process that remains active while you use the feature.
Several rows have different architectures
That is a valid result, not necessarily an error. Record each process and identify which one performs the relevant work. Report the app as mixed only when you have evidence of both native and emulated components; otherwise state the architecture of each process separately.
The process is ARM64 but a device does not work
Investigate the device’s driver, service, and vendor support. The visible process can be native while a required kernel-mode component is unavailable or incompatible. Check for an Arm64 driver and a Windows-on-Arm support statement before changing the app architecture.

The process is x64 and performance seems acceptable
That is consistent with supported emulation. Keep the x64 label in your records, because a future update, plug-in, or Windows build can change behavior. If battery life or heavy workloads are important, look for an Arm64 or Arm64EC release and compare the exact task rather than assuming that an acceptable launch experience equals native performance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A concise way to report your finding
Include the Windows version, device type, executable or process name, exact Architecture value, and any separate helper-process or driver result. For example: “On Windows 11 24H2, the main process is ARM64, the plug-in host is x64, and the scanner driver has no confirmed Arm64 version.” This wording tells support staff what is native, what is emulated, and where the remaining compatibility risk lies.
A five-minute verification workflow
For a repeatable check, first note the laptop model and Windows edition and build. Launch the app and perform the feature you actually need, not merely the opening screen. While that feature is active, record the architecture of the main process, renderer, plug-in host, and any helper that appears. Close and reopen the feature if a component is created only on demand.
Next, list external dependencies: plug-ins, codecs, fonts, cloud connectors, USB devices, network filters, launchers, and anti-cheat services. Mark each one as native, emulated user-mode software, or requiring an Arm64 driver. Finally, repeat the task after updating the app and Windows. An architecture label can change when a publisher ships an Arm64 build or adopts Arm64EC, so date-stamping your notes prevents an old result from being treated as current.
If you are comparing editions, use the same files, settings, peripherals, and workload on both. Record responsiveness, sustained speed, battery behavior, crashes, and missing features separately from architecture. This produces a useful support report without claiming that one label predicts every result.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I check whether an app is emulated on Windows on Arm?
Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc, choose Details, enable the Architecture column, and find the running process. x86 and x64 indicate user-mode emulation; ARM64 indicates native Arm64 execution. ARM64 (x64 compatible) indicates an Arm64EC-compatible process that may combine native and emulated code.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Does ARM64 (x64 compatible) mean the whole app is native?
No. It means the process can use Arm64EC code natively while x64 modules in the same process continue through emulation. Inspect plug-ins and helper processes separately before describing the entire app as native.

Will an x64 app work on an ARM laptop?
Windows on Arm supports user-mode x64 and x86 emulation, so many apps can launch and run. Compatibility still depends on the app’s features, plug-ins, services, performance needs, and any driver or peripheral it uses.
Why does my ARM64 app fail with a printer or scanner?
The visible app process may be native while its device depends on a kernel-mode driver. User-mode emulation does not supply an Arm64 driver. Check the hardware maker for a driver and Windows-on-Arm support statement for your Windows build.
Can I check an app that is not running?
Yes. From a Visual Studio Developer Command Prompt, run link /dump /headers followed by the executable path and inspect the PE machine information. This identifies the binary image, but it does not reveal loaded plug-ins, child-process architectures, or driver support.

Does Windows 11 24H2 make every emulated app fast?
No. Windows 11 version 24H2 includes Prism on Arm PCs to improve emulated-app performance, but results vary by app, workload, device, and build. Test the task you care about rather than treating Prism as a benchmark guarantee.
Where can I check game compatibility?
Start with the game’s publisher and current system requirements. Microsoft’s Windows Arm-based PCs guidance also points to Works on WoA, an open-source compatibility listing. Use it as a lead and verify anti-cheat, launcher, online-service, and peripheral requirements with the publisher.
The Bottom Line
Use Task Manager → Details → Architecture as the first check. ARM64 is native, x86 and x64 are emulated user-mode processes, and ARM64 (x64 compatible) is a hybrid Arm64EC case. Then inspect helper processes, plug-ins, drivers, and the exact workload before calling an app fully compatible with your ARM laptop.
