Before signing in, paying, downloading a file or sharing personal details, check the website’s actual domain and confirm the request through a channel you already trust. A lock icon, HTTPS, familiar logo or polished design does not prove that a site belongs to the organization it claims to represent. If a browser warns that a page is dangerous, leave it; if an unexpected message brought you there, do not use its link or phone number to verify the request.

Use five checks before you act

Website legitimacy is not a single browser indicator. Make a decision by considering several separate questions: does the domain match the organization, can you confirm the request independently, does the request make sense in context, has the browser warned you, and is the connection encrypted? These checks answer different things. In particular, encryption protects the connection to the site you reached; it does not establish who operates that site or whether its instructions are safe.

Check What it can tell you What it cannot prove
Domain match Whether the address appears consistent with the organization you meant to reach. That a familiar-looking name or page design is genuine.
Independent confirmation Whether the organization recognizes the request when you contact it through a trusted route. That contact details supplied by the suspicious page or message are trustworthy.
Expected request Whether the requested action fits something you initiated and can verify. That an urgent or plausible-sounding demand is authentic.
Browser warning Whether the browser has identified a danger it is warning you about. That a site is safe simply because no warning appeared.
HTTPS Whether the browser-to-site connection is encrypted. That the site belongs to the intended organization or has good intentions.

Use the checks as a pause-and-verify process, not as a score where one reassuring sign cancels out a serious concern. An unexpected request for a password or payment deserves independent confirmation even if the site looks professional and uses HTTPS.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Think of the checks as answering different questions, not as interchangeable badges. A domain that appears to match is useful evidence about where you are, while an independent confirmation addresses whether the specific instruction is real. A browser warning calls for stopping, while a lack of warning simply means the browser has not presented that warning. And encryption describes the connection, not the motives of the site operator. If one check raises a serious concern, do not let a different reassuring detail overrule it.

Read the domain, not just the page

Start with the address bar and inspect the full domain—the web address identifying the site—rather than relying on a logo, organization name, page colors or other familiar design. Those visual details can be copied. The FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) advises checking for misspellings and a wrong domain; Google also recommends checking URLs carefully.

Look for signs the address is imitating a real one

  • Misspellings or swapped characters: compare the spelling with the organization’s official domain, including the characters that are easy to overlook.
  • Extra words: an address can include the organization’s name alongside other words. Do not assume the name alone makes the domain official.
  • Misleading subdomains: a trusted name appearing within a longer address does not by itself show that the organization controls the domain. Read the complete domain rather than stopping when you spot a familiar word.
  • A different ending: check whether the domain ending matches the address the organization itself uses. A different ending is a reason to verify, not proof on its own that a site is fraudulent.

If you are unsure what domain the organization officially uses, do not guess from the suspicious page. Navigate to the organization’s known website yourself using a saved bookmark or an address you already trust, then compare the domain. If the request came in a message, the message’s link is not an independent way to establish the site’s identity.

Read the address from beginning to end rather than scanning only for a brand name. An organization’s name may appear as extra text in a longer address, and a misleading subdomain can make part of an address look familiar. The important comparison is with the official domain the organization uses—not whether the page contains a recognizable word somewhere in its URL.

Separate a recognizable brand from a verified domain

A page can display a real organization’s name and logo while being hosted somewhere else. Likewise, a convincing layout cannot establish that a form will send information to the organization you intended. The useful question is not “Does this look familiar?” but “Is this the organization’s official domain, and can I confirm that this particular request is real?”

The domain check is especially important before an action that has consequences: entering a password, sharing personal or financial details, paying, or downloading a file. The more consequential the instruction, the less you should rely on visual appearance or on a claim made by the page itself. If you cannot compare the address with a known official one, hold off while you find a trusted route to the organization.

Understand what HTTPS and the lock icon mean

HTTPS certificates encrypt the connection between your browser and the site. That helps protect information in transit, but it does not certify the site’s operator, honesty or purpose. A phishing site can also use HTTPS. The FBI IC3 stated in its June 10, 2019 public service announcement: “Do not trust a website just because it has a lock icon or "https" in the browser address bar.”

Google Chrome Help’s current guidance, checked October 10, 2026, likewise describes certificates as encrypting the browser-to-site connection and advises checking the site name. Treat HTTPS as one connection-security fact—not as a verdict on legitimacy. If the domain is wrong, encryption does not make it the right organization. If the request is unexpected, the lock icon does not make the request expected.

In practical terms, HTTPS is not a substitute for checking who you are communicating with. It says something about the connection to the domain shown in the browser; it does not tell you whether that domain is controlled by the organization whose name appears on the page. The FBI’s caution applies even when the browser shows a lock. Do not use that icon as a reason to relax the other checks.

Verify unexpected requests through a separate route

If a page came from an unexpected email, text or other message, do not use the link or phone number in that message to resolve the problem it describes. For example, if a message says there is an account issue, open the organization’s known official website yourself or call a number from a trusted source you already have. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and Google Safety Center recommend contacting a purportedly familiar company through a website or phone number already known to be real.

  1. Stop at the request. Do not enter credentials, payment details or personal information while you check.
  2. Leave the message’s route. Do not follow its link or rely on its contact details for verification.
  3. Reach the organization independently. Use its known official website or a trusted phone number from an existing source.
  4. Ask whether the specific request is genuine. Describe what the message asks you to do, rather than just asking whether the organization sent “something.”
  5. Act only after confirmation. If the organization cannot confirm the request through that independent route, do not carry out the instructions on the questionable page.

This matters because an imitation can provide its own apparently helpful support contact. Calling that number or replying to that message keeps you inside the same unverified chain. Independent confirmation means choosing the route yourself, not simply finding another button on the page you are assessing.

Be precise when you verify. Tell the organization what the page asked you to do—such as sign in, make a payment or provide personal information—and explain that the request arrived unexpectedly. Confirming that the company exists, or that it sometimes contacts customers, is not the same as confirming this particular instruction. The question is whether the specific account issue, payment or download is real.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you do not have a trusted phone number readily available, use the organization’s known official website as your separate starting point. Avoid switching from one link in the suspicious message to another link or support button on the same page: those are still part of the route you are trying to verify. If you cannot establish a separate, trusted route or get confirmation, do not proceed on the questionable page.

Pause when the request relies on pressure or sensitive information

Urgency is a reason to slow down, not a reason to skip verification. Phishing messages often impersonate familiar organizations to prompt a click or disclosure. Treat threats of account loss, pressure to act immediately, unusually low prices, or requests for passwords, payment or personal information as signals to verify the request independently. Google Safety Center’s current guidance, checked October 10, 2026, identifies urgency and unusually low prices as warning signs.

Ask yourself whether you initiated the interaction and whether the requested information is relevant to it. A request can sound plausible and still require confirmation if it arrived unexpectedly or asks for sensitive details. Do not let a countdown, threat or deal determine your next step. Pause, check the domain and confirm through the organization’s known website or phone number.

This is not a claim that every urgent request or low price is fraudulent. It is a practical way to decide when not to trust the page on appearance alone. If you cannot independently establish why the request is being made, do not submit the information or payment it seeks.

Consider both the pressure and the action being requested. A familiar company name may make a message feel routine, but the combination of an unexpected message and a demand for sensitive information is still a reason to check. Likewise, a very low price may be tempting, but it does not verify the seller or the payment request. The safer next step is not to guess whether the offer is real; it is to confirm through the organization’s known website or trusted phone number.

Take a browser danger warning seriously

If Chrome displays a full-page warning that a site is dangerous, leave rather than proceeding. Chrome advises users not to use a site marked dangerous and not to enter personal information there; its guidance notes that dangerous pages can threaten privacy and security and may attempt to install harmful software. Do not treat an option to continue past a warning as verification that the page is legitimate.

The reverse is not true: no warning does not confirm safety. Browser warnings are a reason to stop when present, but their absence does not replace checking the domain and independently verifying the request. A warning also does not need to appear before you decide that a suspicious address or unverified demand is not safe to follow.

Keep the warning in perspective: it is an explicit reason not to use the page, not a complete assessment of every site you might encounter. Conversely, the absence of a warning does not tell you that the page belongs to the organization it claims to represent. You still need to assess the domain, the context of the request and any independent confirmation before taking action.

A practical decision path for sign-ins, payments and downloads

If a page asks you to sign in

Do not enter a password simply because the page uses a familiar logo or says your account is at risk. Compare the full domain with the organization’s known official domain. If a message led you there unexpectedly, close that route and reach the organization independently. Ask it to confirm the account issue or sign-in request before submitting credentials.

Keep the distinction clear between an account issue you can verify independently and a claim made by the page requesting your password. A threat that you will lose access may be intended to hurry you, while a page’s familiarity is not proof of identity. If you cannot confirm the issue through the organization’s own known site or a trusted phone number, do not submit your sign-in information there.

If a page asks you to pay

Pause if the payment request is unexpected, unusually pressured or tied to an unusually low price. Check the domain and confirm the transaction through the organization’s known site or a trusted phone number—not the contact information on the questionable page. Do not treat HTTPS as evidence that the payee is the organization you intended.

Before paying, be able to answer two separate questions: is this the organization or seller you meant to reach, and is this particular payment request expected? A secure connection addresses neither question on its own. If the transaction cannot be confirmed independently, do not let an urgent deadline or attractive price push you into submitting payment details.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If a page asks you to download something

Check whether you expected the download and whether you reached the organization through its known official domain. Do not proceed through a dangerous-site browser warning. A download request that appears in an unexpected message or comes with pressure to act is a reason to stop and verify the request independently.

Ask whether the download fits an action you initiated and whether the organization can confirm that it is the intended file or instruction. Do not treat a logo, polished page or HTTPS connection as confirmation. If the browser warns that the site is dangerous, leave rather than trying the download from that page.

Make the decision based on what you can confirm

  • Proceed only when the domain and request are independently confirmed and the browser is not warning you away from the page.
  • Stop when the address does not match or when the organization cannot confirm the request through a trusted route.
  • Do not interpret missing evidence as reassurance. A clean-looking page, HTTPS connection or absence of a browser warning cannot establish identity on its own.

When the available checks do not settle the question, pausing is a valid decision. You do not have to complete a transaction or disclose information just because a page presents an instruction. Revisit the organization through a route you already trust and continue only if you can confirm both where you are and why the request is being made.

If you already clicked, submitted information or downloaded a file

Respond to what happened rather than assuming that every visit caused the same harm. If you only opened a page, the guidance here does not establish that your information was exposed; however, do not continue with an unverified request. If you submitted personal or financial details, use the FTC’s IdentityTheft.gov for steps relevant to exposed information. If you downloaded something harmful, the FTC recommends updating security software and scanning the device.

If you shared personal or financial details

Use IdentityTheft.gov for guidance on what to do after personal or financial information has been exposed. If the information was submitted in response to a purported company request, contact that company through its known website or a trusted phone number so you are not relying on the same questionable page or message.

Do not go back to the suspicious page for instructions about what to do next. Instead, use the FTC resource for guidance on exposed personal or financial details, and contact the organization independently if the information was shared in its name. Which steps apply depends on what details were exposed; the guidance cited here points readers to IdentityTheft.gov rather than prescribing one response for every situation.

If you downloaded a potentially harmful file

The FTC recommends updating your security software and scanning after a harmful download. Do not assume that a download was safe merely because it came from a page with HTTPS or a familiar appearance.

If you received a phishing message

The FTC consumer guidance lists reporting options for email and text messages. CISA’s Secure Our World guidance also identifies recognizing and reporting phishing as part of its safety guidance. Use an appropriate reporting channel for the kind of message and your location; the detailed reporting procedures cited here are U.S.-focused and do not establish a universal workflow for every country.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reporting is a separate step from protecting yourself. Whether or not you report, do not use the message’s links or contact details to verify its claims. The FTC’s listed options are relevant to email and text messages, while CISA’s public guidance emphasizes recognizing and reporting phishing. The exact channel may depend on the type of message and where you are.

What this process can—and cannot—establish

These checks help you decide whether to trust a particular page’s instructions; they do not certify a website or guarantee that every malicious page will be flagged. The cited guidance is general consumer advice, primarily from U.S. government agencies and Google. Browser labels and agency procedures can change, and a missing danger warning is not a guarantee. When the domain or request remains uncertain, the safer decision is to stop and ask the organization through a route you already know is genuine.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does HTTPS or a padlock mean a website is legitimate?

No. HTTPS certificates encrypt the connection between your browser and the site, but they do not establish who operates it or whether its instructions are genuine. The FBI IC3 cautions against trusting a site solely because it has a lock icon or HTTPS.

What should I do if Chrome warns that a site is dangerous?

Leave the page. Chrome advises not to use a site marked dangerous or enter personal information there. Do not treat an option to continue as proof that the site is legitimate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is a website safe if my browser does not show a warning?

Not necessarily. A missing warning is not proof that a site is legitimate. Check the full domain and independently confirm any unexpected request before signing in, paying, sharing information or downloading.

How can I verify an account message or payment request?

Do not use the link or phone number in an unexpected message. Reach the organization through its known official website or a trusted phone number from a source you already have, and ask whether the specific request is genuine.

What if I already shared personal or financial information?

Use the FTC’s IdentityTheft.gov for steps relevant to exposed details. If you downloaded a harmful file, the FTC recommends updating security software and scanning the device.

Are all urgent messages or unusually low prices scams?

Not necessarily, but urgency and unusually low prices are reasons to pause and verify independently. Do not let pressure or an attractive offer replace checking the domain and confirming the request.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Before following a website’s instructions, check the full domain, verify unexpected requests through a route you already trust, and take browser danger warnings seriously. HTTPS, a polished page and the absence of a warning do not prove that a site is genuine. If you cannot confirm the domain and the specific request, do not enter information, pay or download.
