To find out whether a website is down for everyone or just you, check it from a separate network or an independent website checker, then compare the result with the service’s official status page. If those checks can reach the site while your browser cannot, troubleshoot your browser, device, Wi-Fi, DNS, or network route. No single checker proves that every visitor can—or cannot—use a site: results can vary by location, and automated checks may be blocked.
Start with the fastest checks
- Check the address. Make sure the domain and page path are spelled correctly, then reload once. A typo or stale link can look like an outage.
- Try another website. If several unrelated sites also fail, the problem is more likely to involve your connection or device than one site. Google Chrome Help recommends checking whether the problem affects one website or multiple websites.
- Check from outside your connection. Use an independent website checker, or turn off Wi-Fi on your phone and open the site over mobile data. A result from a separate connection helps distinguish a site problem from one on your usual network.
- Look for an official incident notice. Check the website operator’s status page, if it has one. Read it alongside your independent check: a status page can lag or fail to show an isolated issue.
These checks establish whether the problem appears broad or local; they do not identify every cause. If the evidence points to your device or network, use the troubleshooting steps below. If it points to the service, follow its incident updates and try again later.
For the quickest answer to “Is a website down right now, or is it just me?” use two different vantage points: your own connection and a check made somewhere else. If you are on Wi-Fi, mobile data is a convenient comparison, provided Wi-Fi is actually turned off during the test. An independent checker is another option because its request comes from its own server, not your home network.

Checks can look at different parts of the path from your device to a website. One may test whether a server responds to a request; another may load a page in your browser. A site can pass a basic reachability check while a login, a particular page, or another feature remains broken.

| Check | What it tells you | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Your browser on your usual connection | Whether this browser and route can load the page now. | Whether other people, networks, or regions can load it. |
| Another device on the same Wi-Fi | Whether the issue also affects a second device using that network. | Whether the site is reachable from outside your network. |
| Your device on mobile data or another network | Whether changing the network changes the result. | Whether the original device or network is the only possible cause; different paths can have different problems. |
| An independent website checker | Whether the checker’s servers can reach the site from their location and using their method. | Whether your browser session, region, or every site feature works. Automated requests may also be blocked. |
| The operator’s status page | Whether the operator has reported an incident or component status. | Whether every user is affected, or whether an unreported or newly developing issue exists. |
When results disagree, compare four details: who performed the check, which network or location it used, what part of the site it tested, and when it ran. A check from another location is useful evidence, not a guarantee about your own route or the whole service.
The type of test matters too. Some checker services describe a sequence that looks at DNS, connection, TLS, and then a page fetch. These are different stages: DNS lookup resolves the site’s name, a connection test checks whether a route can be established, TLS is part of setting up a secure connection, and a page fetch checks whether a request gets content back. A failure at one stage does not mean all other stages or all of the site’s systems are down.
Also note the time of each check. An outage may begin or end between tests, and a status page may be updated after an incident starts. A checker result from earlier in the day should not be treated as a current result. When you compare checks, write down the time and the exact page or service you tested.

The checker can reach the site, but your browser cannot
This points toward a problem specific to your browser, device, or route rather than proving which one is responsible. Try a private window or a different browser, then compare your usual Wi-Fi with mobile data. If the site works in one browser but not another, focus on browser settings or extensions. If it fails only on one network, investigate that connection.
One successful outside check is not a verdict that “the internet is fine.” The checker may be in a different region, using a different route, or making a simpler request than your browser. The site could also block automated requests while allowing normal visitors, or the reverse. Treat the check as one piece of evidence and repeat it if the result conflicts with what you see.
Independent checks fail and the official page reports an incident
Together, these are strong evidence of a service-side problem. Follow the operator’s updates rather than repeatedly changing local settings. For example, Cloudflare’s status page reports component and location status; its dashboard notification options vary by plan.
A status page can help identify scope. A service may list separate components or locations, so read the detail rather than relying only on an overall green or red indicator. If the affected component matches the feature you need, that is more useful than a general status label. Cloudflare documents component and location reporting on its status page; notification options in its dashboard depend on the plan.

Independent checks fail, but the official page is green
The result is inconclusive. The checker could be blocked, your region or network route could be affected, or the failure might involve a component that the status page does not report. Repeat the check from another network or location if possible, and test the specific page or feature that fails.
Do not assume the checker is wrong or that the operator’s page is complete. A status page is useful operational information from the service, but it may not reflect a newly developing issue or an isolated failure. If only your ISP or region has trouble reaching the site, a check from elsewhere can succeed while your connection still fails.
The home page loads, but a page or feature does not
A basic checker may fetch a site successfully without signing in or completing the action you need. Test the exact page, login, or application flow in your browser and note whether the failure occurs before or after the site begins loading. A reachable home page does not confirm that every part of the service is healthy.
Be precise about what is unavailable. For example, distinguish “the home page will not open” from “the home page loads, but sign-in fails” or “the page loads, but submitting a form returns an error.” The narrower description helps you avoid mislabeling a feature-specific issue as a complete outage, and gives support a clearer problem to investigate.
The site is slow rather than unreachable
Slowness is not the same as downtime. A request can spend time looking up a domain, establishing a secure connection, following redirects, or transferring the page. Cloudflare’s troubleshooting guidance describes using curl to inspect HTTP requests, headers, errors, TLS, and performance; the timing of these stages can help distinguish a slow response from a complete failure.
If a page eventually loads, note how long it takes and whether the delay happens consistently. A single slow load can be a temporary fluctuation. If you are technically experienced, request-level timing can help show whether the delay is during DNS lookup, the TLS handshake, redirects, or data transfer. That is more informative than treating any delay as proof that the entire website is offline.
Troubleshoot a problem that appears local
Separate browser problems from device problems
- Open the same address in a private window. If it works there, an extension, cookie, or other saved browser state may be involved.
- Try a different browser. If that works, concentrate on the original browser rather than changing router settings.
- Temporarily disable extensions, then reload. If this fixes the page, turn extensions back on one at a time and retest to identify the one involved.
- Clear browsing data only after the simpler tests. Chrome Help includes this among its troubleshooting steps, but clearing data can remove useful cookies or site state and may sign you out.
A private window is a quick comparison, not a permanent fix. If it works, the cause could be an extension or saved site data, but the test by itself does not tell you which. Disable extensions temporarily and test again; if that changes the result, re-enable them one by one until the behavior returns. If the private window also fails and a second browser fails, look beyond the original browser.

Clearing browsing data is deliberately later in the sequence because it can remove useful cookies or other site state. It may sign you out or reset preferences, and it will not fix a problem on the ISP’s route or the website’s server. Record what you have already tried so you can avoid repeating disruptive steps without a reason.
Compare devices and networks
- Test another device on the same Wi-Fi. If both devices fail on the same site, a browser issue on just one device is less likely.
- Test the original device using mobile data or a different network. On a phone, turn Wi-Fi off before testing so the result actually uses mobile data.
- If the site works on another network, focus on the original network path: the router or modem, DNS, ISP, or a network policy may be involved.
- If the problem follows one device across networks, inspect that device’s browser settings, security software, firewall, or other network settings.
This comparison works because it changes one side of the connection at a time. Two devices failing on the same Wi-Fi suggests a shared network or route issue more than a single-device browser problem. One device failing on both Wi-Fi and mobile data while another works makes a device-specific cause more plausible. Neither pattern proves a cause, but each narrows what to check next.
Google Chrome Help lists device settings, airplane mode, firewall or antivirus software, modem and router problems, browser state and extensions, and website downtime among possible causes of connection and loading errors. Change one thing at a time and retest; changing several settings together makes it harder to tell what fixed the problem.
Use the symptom to choose the next step
- Several unrelated sites fail: check that the device is connected and not in airplane mode, then compare another device or network. A broader connection problem is more plausible than simultaneous outages at unrelated sites.
- One site fails on several devices on the same Wi-Fi: compare with mobile data or an independent check. If the alternate route works, investigate the shared network or route.
- One site fails only in one browser: use a private window, another browser, and the extension test before clearing saved data.
- A security warning appears: treat it as a security or certificate warning, not simply as proof that the website is down. Do not bypass the warning just to test availability.
- A page partially loads or a feature fails: test the particular page or action; a simple reachability check may not cover it.
If several unrelated websites fail at once, check the basic state of the connection before focusing on one site: confirm Wi-Fi or mobile data is connected, and check that airplane mode is off. If other devices on the same network also fail, that is a stronger reason to investigate the router, modem, ISP, or network settings. Avoid buying replacement hardware based on a single-site failure; first establish that the problem is shared by the network.
If only one site is affected, don’t make broad changes such as resetting network settings or disabling security protections as a first move. Compare another browser and network, and check the service’s status. If a firewall or antivirus product is suspected, check its settings carefully rather than leaving protection off. A security warning should not be bypassed just to see whether the page opens.
When to use technical diagnostics
Most visitors do not need command-line tools to determine whether a site is broadly unavailable. They are more useful when you administer the site, need to report a reproducible problem, or have narrowed the issue to a particular connection path.
Cloudflare’s troubleshooting guidance, updated August 12, 2026, matches tools to symptoms: use curl to inspect request behavior, and traceroute or MTR when investigating timeouts or a suspected network path problem. These are optional diagnostics, not prerequisites for deciding whether to wait or troubleshoot locally.

Use curl for a request-level problem
Cloudflare recommends curl when you need to inspect HTTP requests, response headers, errors, TLS, or performance without relying on a browser. It can help show whether a request receives a response and where time is spent. It does not reproduce every browser behavior, authenticated session, or interactive site feature, so a successful request does not prove that a full user journey works.
A request-level check can be useful when the browser shows a vague loading error or when you need more detail for a support or operations report. It can help distinguish “no response” from a server response containing an error, and expose request or connection timing. It is still only a test of the request you made, from the machine and network where you ran it; it does not establish how the site behaves for every visitor.
Recommended Free Tools
Use traceroute or MTR for timeouts and path trouble
Cloudflare lists traceroute and MTR for investigating timeouts or suspected network-path problems. These tools help examine the route between a device and a destination; they are not a general test of whether a website’s pages or application features work. Results can require technical interpretation, so they are best suited to experienced users or administrators.
If you are not comfortable interpreting command-line output, the basic comparisons—another browser, device, or network—are usually enough to decide whether the next report should go to the website operator or your ISP. Technical tools can narrow a path issue, but they are not necessary for an ordinary visitor and do not guarantee a definitive diagnosis.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to send support
If you contact the website operator or your ISP, report observations rather than a conclusion based on one checker. Include the exact page or feature, the time you tested it, the error shown, and which comparisons succeeded or failed.
- Whether other unrelated sites load.
- Whether the same site works in another browser or private window.
- Whether another device on the same Wi-Fi has the same problem.
- Whether the site works over mobile data or another network.
- Whether an independent checker and the operator’s status page agree, and when you checked them.
Do not include passwords, session cookies, or other private account information in a support report. If the failure is limited to a particular page or account action, describe that action rather than reporting only that the entire website is down.
If you used a checker, include its result as a dated observation, not a claim that it tested every user’s experience. State whether the check was from your own device or an outside service, and mention the location or network if known. For a slow site, say whether it eventually loaded; for a page-specific issue, name the page or action. These details let support compare your result with its own logs and status information.

For an ISP report, emphasize whether multiple unrelated sites fail and whether more than one device on the same connection is affected. For a website operator, emphasize the exact URL or feature, the error message, and whether the issue reproduces across networks. In either case, omit sensitive account details and never send passwords or session cookies.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if a website is down, or if it’s just my internet?
Try another unrelated website, then compare the problem site using mobile data with Wi-Fi off or an independent checker. If several unrelated sites fail, your connection or device is more likely involved. If outside checks fail too and the operator reports an incident, a service-side problem is more likely. These results are evidence, not certainty.
Can an independent website checker prove a site is down for everyone?
No. It shows whether that checker’s servers could reach the site from their location using their method. Automated requests can be blocked, and network or regional behavior can differ. Compare the result with the official status page and another network, and note when you checked.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →What if the checker says the website is up but it still will not load for me?
Try another browser or a private window, then test the same device on a different network. A successful checker result does not rule out a local browser, device, DNS, ISP, or route problem, and it may not test the page or feature you need.
Why does the homepage work when the login or another page is broken?
A basic reachability check may fetch a public page without signing in or using a particular feature. Test the exact page or action and report that specific failure; a working homepage does not show that every component or user journey is healthy.
Should I clear my browser data to fix a website that will not load?
Try a private window, another browser, and temporarily disabling extensions first. Clearing browsing data can remove useful cookies or site state and may sign you out, so use it only after simpler comparisons suggest a browser-state problem.
Do I need command-line tools to check whether a website is down?
Usually not. An independent check, official status page, and comparison across a browser, device, or network are enough for most visitors. Experienced users or administrators can use curl to examine request, header, TLS, error, and timing details, or traceroute/MTR for timeouts and suspected path trouble.
Should I replace my router if one website will not open?
Not based on one site failing. First check whether other unrelated sites and devices are affected, then compare the site over another network. Router or modem issues are possibilities when a problem follows a shared network, but a single website failure alone does not justify replacing hardware.
The Bottom Line
To decide whether a website is down for everyone or just you, compare your browser with an independent check or a different network, then read the operator’s status page. Treat each result as a clue: check the exact page and time, and remember that tools may test different locations and layers. If only your browser or network fails, isolate that cause with one change at a time; if multiple outside checks and the official status page point to an incident, follow the service’s updates.
