A used iPhone is worth buying only after three separate checks: erase it and reach the Hello screen without the previous owner’s account, read the repair records in Parts and Service History, and verify Apple’s coverage information against the original proof of purchase. Then test battery health, carrier lock, cameras, buttons, Wi‑Fi and other functions. These checks provide strong evidence, but they do not certify every component or override consumer rights in your country.
How can I check if a used iPhone is genuine and still under warranty?
Use this order before handing over money:
- Remove the previous owner’s link. Have the seller erase the iPhone. Begin setup yourself and continue until the Hello screen appears without asking for the seller’s Apple Account. A screen that says “iPhone Locked to Owner” is a stop condition.
- Read the reported repair history. On supported models running iOS 15.2 or later, open Settings > General > About and inspect Parts and Service History. Interpret labels such as Genuine, Used, Unknown, Unverified and Finish Repair rather than treating the section as an authenticity certificate.
- Check Apple’s coverage record. Use Apple’s official coverage lookup with the serial number shown in Settings > General > About. Compare the result with the seller’s receipt or other purchase documentation.
- Test the phone as a device. Check battery health, network-provider lock, Wi‑Fi, cameras, microphones, speakers, buttons, charging and biometric features. Warranty status does not guarantee that a second-hand phone is in good physical or functional condition.
Do not rely on a single green result. An iPhone can be genuine but Activation Locked, have a third-party display, show an incorrect purchase date, or contain a used part that is not covered by Apple’s warranty or AppleCare.

1. Check Activation Lock before paying
Ask the seller to erase the iPhone
Do this in person whenever possible. Ask the seller to back up their data, sign out of their Apple Account, and erase the device. You should then see the initial Hello screen and be able to select a language and region. Apple considers the phone ready for a new owner when setup reaches that Hello screen without the former owner’s credentials being required.
An erased phone is not automatically free of Activation Lock. Activation Lock is checked by Apple whenever an iPhone is activated or recovered. The device can look freshly reset while remaining tied to the seller’s account.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Recognize the stop messages
- “iPhone Locked to Owner”: do not buy it. The seller must remove the device from their Apple Account before the transaction.
- A request for the previous owner’s Apple Account: the account link is still present. The seller must enter their credentials during setup or remove the device from their account remotely.
- A normal Hello screen: continue setup far enough to confirm that no previous-owner password is requested. Do not accept a phone merely because it displays a welcome screen before you try activation.
Why this check matters more than a serial-number search
Activation Lock determines whether you can actually activate and use the handset. A serial number that looks valid cannot make a stolen or account-linked iPhone usable. If a seller says they will remove the lock later, walk away or postpone payment until you can complete the check yourself.
2. Read Parts and Service History
Open the correct screen
On iOS 15.2 or later, go to Settings > General > About. If Apple has a supported repair record for the handset, an entry named Parts and Service History appears. The absence of this entry does not prove that the phone has never been repaired: reporting depends on the model, software version and whether Apple has a supported record.
On iOS versions earlier than 15.2, Apple says the system can identify only an Unknown Part replacement. If possible, update the phone before inspecting the history, while remembering that an update cannot reconstruct older records that the system does not support.

Which models can report which parts?
| iPhone model group | Parts Apple may report |
|---|---|
| iPhone 12 models and later | Battery, display, logic board, front camera and rear camera |
| iPhone 11 models | Battery and display |
| iPhone XR, XS, XS Max, SE (2nd generation) and SE (3rd generation) | Battery |
If a component has been serviced more than once, the screen shows only its most recent service. Older work can therefore be missing from the visible history.

- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
What each label means
| Label | Meaning and buying implication |
|---|---|
| Genuine | Apple reports that the repair used a genuine Apple part and Apple’s processes. It describes the recorded repair, not every component in the phone. |
| Used | The part was previously used or installed in another iPhone. Apple states that used Apple parts and repairs performed with used Apple parts are not covered by its product warranty or an AppleCare plan. |
| Unknown | Possible causes include a nongenuine part, a part that is not working as expected, an incomplete verification or linking process, or a modified or otherwise unverifiable part. Ask for a repair explanation and test the affected function. |
| Unverified | The logic board was previously replaced. Apple warns that this can affect features such as Apple Pay. |
| Finish Repair | A repair or configuration process is incomplete. Apple says performance can be reduced until calibration finishes, and Face ID or Touch ID may be unavailable. |
Handle a part linked to another Apple Account
A replacement part can have its own account lock. Apple says a part linked to another Apple Account is not covered by the Limited Warranty or AppleCare until it is unlocked, and Apple cannot remove that part’s Activation Lock for a buyer. If the phone shows a part-account prompt or Finish Repair, require the seller to resolve it before purchase. Do not assume that erasing the handset clears a separately locked component.
3. Verify Apple’s warranty and coverage record
Use the serial number from the phone itself
- Open Settings > General > About.
- Record the iPhone’s serial number and, where relevant, its model information.
- Enter that serial number in Apple’s official device coverage lookup.
- Compare the displayed purchase date, expiration information and plan details with the seller’s original receipt or other purchase documentation.
Using the serial number displayed in Settings reduces the risk of checking a copied number from a box, listing or photograph. Keep a screenshot or written record of the result on the day you inspect the phone.
Why the coverage date may be wrong
Apple says its coverage system relies on purchase-date information available to Apple, and estimated dates can be incorrect. If the date or expiration is wrong, Apple says the original sales receipt is needed to update the purchase date. Apple may also request the receipt or an AppleCare Proof of Coverage document when deciding whether a service request is eligible.

Understand what the lookup does not show
- The system may not immediately reflect recently submitted information or repair-service coverage.
- It may omit additional programs that extend coverage.
- Warranty-service options vary by location.
- The coverage page may not include rights granted by local consumer law.
- Registering or not registering the iPhone does not change the warranty itself.
For a used purchase, obtain the original receipt whenever possible. Without it, correcting an estimated purchase date or proving eligibility can be more difficult.
4. Test battery health, carrier lock and everyday functions
Battery health
On an iPhone 6 or later running iOS 11.3 or later, open Settings > Battery > Battery Health. On iOS 16.1 or later, Apple labels the screen Battery Health & Charging. Review maximum-capacity information and any service message, then test whether the phone charges reliably.
Battery-health information may be unavailable when the battery is unknown or nongenuine. Treat a missing reading as a reason to investigate, not as evidence of a new battery.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Network-provider lock
Open Settings > General > About and find Network Provider Lock (called carrier lock in some explanations). No SIM restrictions means the iPhone is unlocked. A named carrier means the phone can be used only with that carrier unless the carrier approves an unlock. Confirm compatibility with the network you intend to use before paying.
Rank #4
- Vibrant 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display with OLED technology. Action mode for smooth, steady, handheld videos.
Physical and functional checks
- Connect to Wi‑Fi and load several pages or apps.
- Place a call, test the microphone and listen through the earpiece and speaker.
- Open both camera systems available on the model, focus near and far, record video and inspect the flash.
- Press every hardware button and verify the mute or Action control where fitted.
- Test the touchscreen across the entire display, including edges and the keyboard.
- Connect a charging cable and, if relevant, test wireless charging and accessories.
- Set up Face ID or Touch ID. A phone showing Finish Repair may not permit biometric features until calibration is complete.
- Inspect the frame, display, camera glass, charging port and signs of liquid or impact damage under good light.
These tests answer a different question from authenticity. A genuine iPhone with active coverage can still have worn battery capacity, intermittent Wi‑Fi, a damaged camera or a carrier restriction.
Compare two used iPhones only after the checks
Price alone is not a meaningful comparison until both devices have passed the account and coverage checks. Record the results in a table like this before choosing:
| Comparison point | Phone A | Phone B |
|---|---|---|
| Activation Lock removed; setup reaches Hello screen | Pass or fail | Pass or fail |
| Parts and Service History labels | List each reported part and label | List each reported part and label |
| Apple coverage and purchase-date evidence | Coverage result plus receipt status | Coverage result plus receipt status |
| Battery-health reading and charging test | Record the displayed result | Record the displayed result |
| Network Provider Lock | No SIM restrictions or named carrier | No SIM restrictions or named carrier |
| Functional inspection | Cameras, buttons, Wi‑Fi, audio, biometrics | Cameras, buttons, Wi‑Fi, audio, biometrics |
| Price and local legal protections | Evaluate after the rows above | Evaluate after the rows above |
A lower price does not compensate for an Activation Lock, an unresolved part-account lock or a carrier restriction you cannot use. Conversely, a phone with a disclosed used part may be acceptable if you understand that the part itself may not qualify for Apple warranty or AppleCare coverage.
Common warning signs and what to do
The seller will not erase the phone
Do not pay. A refusal prevents you from checking Activation Lock and may conceal a stolen or account-linked device. Meet again only when the seller is willing to complete setup in front of you.

The phone has no Parts and Service History section
This is inconclusive. Reporting varies by model and iOS, and the section appears only when relevant supported history exists. Use the coverage, account-lock and physical tests instead of treating the missing section as proof of an untouched handset.
The phone shows Unknown, Unverified or Finish Repair
Ask which component was replaced, who performed the repair and whether the seller can complete the required configuration. Test the affected features. Do not represent an Unknown part as genuine, and do not buy while a part-account lock or incomplete repair remains.
Apple’s date conflicts with the receipt
Keep the original receipt and ask Apple to correct the purchase date. Until the record is corrected, treat the displayed expiration as uncertain rather than assuming that coverage definitely ends on that date.

Inspect the serial number in Settings and run the checks on the actual handset. Packaging and screenshots can be mismatched and cannot replace an in-person activation test.
Warranty, AppleCare and local consumer rights
Apple’s coverage lookup is not the complete statement of your legal rights. Coverage pages can omit rights provided by the country or region where the phone was sold or serviced, and service options vary by location. Before buying from another country, check the consumer-protection rules that apply to the transaction and the location where you would seek service.
Keep the seller’s invoice, the original sales receipt if available, photographs of the serial number and the coverage result, and written details of any disclosed repair. These records help establish the purchase date and the condition represented at sale. They do not convert a third-party or account-locked part into a covered Apple component.
A practical pre-payment checklist
- Account: the seller has erased the iPhone; setup reaches Hello; no “iPhone Locked to Owner” message appears; no previous Apple Account is requested.
- History: you opened Parts and Service History where supported and recorded every label.
- Coverage: you checked the serial number from Settings, saved the result and compared it with purchase documentation.
- Parts: any Used, Unknown, Unverified or Finish Repair status is understood and resolved where necessary.
- Battery: health information is visible or its absence has been investigated; charging works.
- Network: Network Provider Lock matches the carrier you plan to use.
- Function: Wi‑Fi, calls, cameras, microphones, speakers, buttons, display, charging and biometrics work as expected.
- Documents: you have the seller’s receipt or invoice and know where service would be requested in your region.
If any account-lock check fails, stop the purchase. If a coverage date, repair label or functional test is uncertain, delay payment until the seller supplies an explanation and you can verify it on the phone itself.
