Yes, a Ubisoft server shutdown can leave the purchased game playable—but it can also remove multiplayer, statistics, rewards, challenges, news, or unlockable content. The only reliable answer is title- and platform-specific. Find the game in Ubisoft Help’s current A–M or N–Z decommissioning list, note the exact platform and retirement date, then verify the game’s offline mode, launcher, account, and connection requirements.
“Offline play” and “the game launches” are separate questions. Ubisoft says offline features remain available for most games in its legacy shutdown lists, while its terms also allow some games or features to require Ubisoft Connect, an account, an internet check, or a permanent connection.
What a Ubisoft server shutdown actually changes
A decommissioning notice normally concerns online services rather than the game software itself. For most titles in Ubisoft’s legacy shutdown lists, the offline portions remain available, but connected services can disappear. Ubisoft Help states: “Please note that the offline features of the games are unaffected and remain available to you.” The qualification matters: this statement applies to most games covered by those lists, not automatically to every Ubisoft release, edition, platform, downloadable item, or future launcher change.

- Online multiplayer, matchmaking, or co-op sessions.
- In-game news and announcements.
- Player statistics, leaderboards, or profile data.
- Units and Challenges.
- Rewards and other server-delivered benefits.
- Unlockable content, depending on the platform and how the content was redeemed.
That means “Will it still work?” has at least three answers: whether the software can launch, whether its offline campaign or local modes remain playable, and which network-dependent features have been removed. Check each separately.

Information to collect before checking
Ubisoft records decommissioning by product and platform. Write down the details from your purchase or library before searching. A similar title on another platform may have a different retirement date, a different set of affected services, or no entry at all.
Record the exact game identity
- Full game title, including a subtitle or numbered sequel.
- Edition, such as a standard, deluxe, gold, complete, or collection release.
- Platform and generation, for example PC, PlayStation, Xbox, or another listed console.
- For PC, whether you own a Ubisoft Connect PC release or a version obtained through another PC storefront.
- Whether you are checking the base game, a season pass, downloadable content, or a previously redeemed reward.
Keep the edition information because an online service entry may describe the base game while a reward or add-on has a separate entitlement requirement.
How to use Ubisoft’s decommissioning lists
Ubisoft Help maintains two legacy shutdown articles, organized as A–M and N–Z. They are the starting point for a title-specific answer. The pages are live documents, so check them again if a notice or date changes.
- Open the appropriate Ubisoft Help list. Use the A–M list for titles beginning with those letters and the N–Z list for the remaining titles.
- Find the exact game title. Do not stop at a similar name or a franchise heading.
- Match the platform. Read the platform column or wording beside the title. A date shown for one platform is not proof that every platform is affected.
- Record the retirement date. Treat it as the date for the specified service and platform, not as a universal “game stops working” date.
- Read the explanatory text below or beside the entry. It may identify affected online functions, rewards, or unlockable content that the heading does not spell out.
- Check the title’s own support article. The list establishes a service change; the game-specific article often explains offline play, account checks, or platform differences.
Ubisoft’s October 2023 notice, for example, identified both games and affected platforms rather than applying one blanket date to an entire catalogue. That is why a title and platform are indispensable.

How to interpret the listed effects
Use the entry as a feature-by-feature inventory. A game can remain playable while losing all of its network services. The following table separates the common outcomes.

The N–Z guidance specifically describes platform-dependent consequences for previously redeemed unlockable content. Do not assume that an item visible in an old save, an account page, or a retail edition will behave identically on another platform.
Check offline play separately from launch requirements
After identifying the shutdown entry, determine how the game starts when its services are unavailable. Search Ubisoft Help for the title and look for instructions describing offline mode, first launch, activation, or Ubisoft Connect.

Ubisoft Connect and account checks
Ubisoft’s terms explain that an internet connection, a Ubisoft account, or the Ubisoft Connect client may be needed to install, launch, access, or unlock some games or content. In other cases, a game or a particular feature may require a permanent connection. Therefore, a game can have an offline campaign in principle but still fail to start if its authentication path is unavailable or if the installed edition requires a connection at launch.

Check these questions in the title-specific documentation:
- Must Ubisoft Connect PC be installed even when you intend to play offline?
- Does the game require you to sign in to a Ubisoft account before switching to offline mode?
- Is the connection requirement limited to installation or first launch, or does it continue during play?
- Does a particular DLC pack, reward, or mode have a separate online requirement?
- Does the console edition use a different activation or account process from the PC edition?
Concrete offline example: Anno 1800
Ubisoft’s support guidance gives Anno 1800 as a specific example: when Ubisoft Connect PC is in offline mode, the game starts in offline mode. Online features are unavailable in that state. This demonstrates the distinction you need to look for in other titles: the client can launch and the offline game can run while connected features remain disabled. It is an example for that game, not a guarantee for every Ubisoft product.
Verify DLC, rewards, and previously redeemed content
Do not treat a purchased edition as proof that every included item will remain accessible after decommissioning. Ubisoft’s legacy rewards guidance says that some older titles may no longer receive patches or appear on the Ubisoft Connect webpage, and rewards can become inaccessible when services are decommissioned.

- Installed local content: already present on the device and not dependent on a live service after activation.
- Account entitlement: granted through a Ubisoft account or launcher and potentially subject to an authentication check.
- Server-delivered reward: claimed through Units, Challenges, news, or another retired service.
- Platform-bound unlock: previously redeemed on one platform or save file, with no assumption that it transfers elsewhere.
If the title’s support page does not state what happens to a particular item, record the result as unknown rather than promising that the DLC or reward will work. Ubisoft’s general statement about offline features does not establish the future availability of every entitlement.
Compare platforms and editions before you buy or reinstall
When you own more than one version, compare them explicitly. This prevents a shutdown entry for one platform from being mistaken for a verdict on another.

A practical decision procedure
Use this sequence to turn the notices into a defensible answer for a particular game.
- Identify it: write the full title, edition, platform, and PC or console release.
- Locate it: search the Ubisoft Help A–M or N–Z decommissioning article.
- Match the entry: confirm that the listed platform is exactly yours.
- Mark the date: record the service retirement date and the services named.
- Separate features: make three notes headed “launch,” “offline play,” and “online or account services.”
- Read title-specific guidance: look for offline mode, Ubisoft Connect, activation, and DLC instructions.
- Audit entitlements: check rewards, Units, Challenges, unlockables, and DLC separately.
- Test only what the documentation supports: if you already own the game, sign in while service access is available, allow required installation or activation, and then follow the documented offline procedure.
- State a qualified result: say what should remain playable, what is retired, and what still depends on an account or connection.
A useful final statement has this form: “For the [edition] on [platform], Ubisoft lists [service] for retirement on [date]. The documented offline mode is [available or not established]. [Specific online features] will not be available, and [account, launcher, or connection requirement] still applies.”

What the January 25, 2024 notice does—and does not—prove
Ubisoft’s January 2024 notice scheduled additional service decommissions for January 25, 2024. For the titles and platforms covered by that notice, Ubisoft said: “Rest assured that the decommissioning of online services will only affect certain online functionalities; if you purchased these games, you will still be able to play them.” This is evidence about the games and service changes named in that notice. It is not a universal promise that every Ubisoft game, platform, DLC item, or future launcher will remain playable after a shutdown.
An earlier Ubisoft update discussed a revised decommission date of October 1, 2022. Dates in these notices are schedule information for specified services, not statistics about how many games remain functional. If a current Help entry conflicts with an older announcement, use the current title- and platform-specific entry and read its latest explanation.
Troubleshoot the result after services are retired
The game will not launch
- Confirm that the installed edition matches the platform and account you checked.
- Verify whether the title requires Ubisoft Connect or an account sign-in before offline use.
- Complete any documented activation or installation step while the required service is available.
- Read the title-specific support article for a permanent-connection requirement; a generic “offline features remain” statement does not override it.
The campaign launches but an online feature is missing
This is usually the expected effect of decommissioning. Multiplayer, news, statistics, Units, Challenges, rewards, and unlockables are separate services. Compare the missing feature with the list entry rather than treating the entire game as broken.
A reward or unlockable disappeared
Check whether it was server-delivered, tied to Units or Challenges, or dependent on a platform and save-file history. Ubisoft’s legacy rewards guidance warns that some rewards become inaccessible after services are decommissioned, so a purchased edition does not by itself establish that an unclaimed reward can still be retrieved.
The game works offline but not online
That behavior is consistent with a service shutdown. An offline-capable game can continue to run while the retired multiplayer, news, statistics, or reward systems no longer respond.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using only the franchise name: different releases can have different service entries.
- Ignoring the platform: a retirement date for PC is not automatically a date for a console edition.
- Equating “servers shut down” with “software is unusable”: Ubisoft says offline features remain for most listed legacy games.
- Equating “offline features remain” with “everything remains”: online modes, news, statistics, challenges, rewards, and unlockables can still be removed.
- Forgetting the launcher: Ubisoft Connect, account authentication, or a permanent connection can determine whether the client starts.
- Assuming DLC and rewards are identical: redeemed content can depend on platform, account, and save history.
- Relying on an old announcement alone: use the current Ubisoft Help entry for the exact title and platform.
The shortest reliable answer
You can determine whether a Ubisoft game will still work only by checking its exact release and platform. Ubisoft’s legacy lists indicate which online services are retired and generally leave offline features available for most listed titles. The game may nevertheless require Ubisoft Connect, an account, an internet check, or a permanent connection, and purchased content does not guarantee that every reward or unlockable survives. Treat launch, offline play, and online entitlements as three separate checks before concluding that the game will work.
