A discount is worth considering only after you confirm it applies to the exact TV or laptop you want, compare its real checkout price with other offers, and check the seller and purchase terms. A crossed-out price or large “% off” badge alone does not establish that an offer is unusually good.
Start by matching the exact product
Before comparing prices, record the manufacturer and model number. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recommends noting those details along with attributes such as size, color, and shipping fees. Its online shopping guidance puts the point plainly: “To comparison shop for a product, make notes of the item’s manufacturer or model number, plus details like size, color, or shipping fees.”
For a laptop
Match the specific configuration, not just the model family. Check memory and storage, along with any other configuration details shown in the listing. Two laptops with similar names can differ in ways that affect price and usefulness.

Check the exact model and screen size. A deal on a smaller TV or a different model is not a like-for-like price comparison, even if the product names look similar.

Compare the sale price with real alternatives
Search several trustworthy sellers for the same product and configuration. Compare the prices actually available to you, noting differences in stock, condition, included items, or eligibility requirements. A lower headline price may depend on a bundle or another condition, so record those terms rather than treating every listing as equivalent.
Do not take the reference price at face value
A percentage-off claim or crossed-out price is a reference point, not proof of a bargain. The FTC warns in its sales guidance that markdowns may be based on a suggested retail price that is higher than what stores typically charge. Its advice is simple: “Comparison shopping is your best bet.”

Use comparison sites carefully
Comparison sites can help surface offers or provide price alerts, but their rankings may reflect commercial incentives. Where a site explains how results are selected, read that explanation and check the underlying seller listing before deciding.

Use price history for context, not as a verdict
If a price-history tool covers the exact listing or product variant, its past prices can help show whether today’s offer is unusual. Check what item and sellers the history represents, how far back it goes, and whether it reflects the same configuration. An alert can help you watch a product, but a graph or notification does not determine whether the purchase suits your needs.

Calculate the full checkout cost
Compare the amount you would actually pay, not just the advertised item price. Add shipping, handling, delivery charges, taxes, and any other fees shown at checkout. Then check whether the price depends on a required bundle, payment method, or other qualification. The FTC recommends accounting for details such as shipping when comparison shopping.

Check the seller, condition, and protections
Verify who is selling and what is included
Read the complete listing and seller information. The FTC notes that terms such as “refurbished,” “vintage,” or “close-out” may signal that an item is not in perfect condition, and recommends comparing seller information and reviews across sources. Confirm that the condition and included accessories match what you expect.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesRead return and price-adjustment terms before buying
Return, refund, price-match, and post-purchase price-adjustment policies vary by seller and may have deadlines or exclusions. Do not assume a retailer will refund the difference if the price falls after you buy. For example, Microsoft’s price-protection policy sets requirements including product identity, stock, timing, and other eligibility conditions. Check the terms that apply to the actual seller and purchase date rather than relying on a general assumption.

Make the decision against your own needs
Once the product matches, compare same-item offers, account for the full cost, and review the purchase terms. Decide whether that final price is worthwhile for the features and timing you care about. There is no single discount percentage or price-history period established as a reliable threshold for every TV and laptop.
