The quickest reliable check is the quote’s own data-status label. Look for wording such as “Data Delayed 15 minutes,” “Data Delayed 24 hours,” “Delayed Data,” or an explicit real-time designation. Then read the timestamp, identify whether the market is in regular or extended hours, and verify that your account has the appropriate market-data entitlement. A timestamp that looks current is not proof of a live feed: it may be the time delayed information was published. If the status remains unclear, compare the same symbol and quote fields with a second source that clearly states whether its data is real-time or delayed.
Use this five-minute test first
Work through these checks in order. They distinguish a delayed feed from ordinary differences between quote fields or trading sessions.
- Find the status notice. Inspect the quote header, ticker details, chart, order ticket, market-data panel, and any information icon. Exchanges expect delayed displays to carry a prominent disclaimer. Nasdaq’s display-policy examples include “Data Delayed 15 minutes,” “Data Delayed 24 hours,” and “Delayed Data.” NYSE policy likewise requires an appropriate delay disclaimer to be prominent and clear when delayed information is displayed.
- Read the timestamp with its time zone. Note whether it belongs to the last trade, bid, ask, bar, close, or another field. Confirm the time zone and whether the quote is marked “as of,” “updated,” or “real time.”
- Identify the session. For U.S. exchange-traded stocks, regular trading is generally 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time. Pre-market and after-hours schedules vary by venue and provider, and a closed market can legitimately show the last regular-session quote.
- Check the entitlement. Open the provider’s account, subscription, or market-data settings and verify access for the specific exchange or product. Real-time access for one venue or instrument does not automatically establish real-time access everywhere in the interface.
- Cross-check like with like. During the same session, compare the symbol, exchange or listing, bid, ask, last trade, volume, and timestamp with a second source whose data status is explicit. Treat this as evidence, not an absolute guarantee.
If any step produces conflicting information, rely on the explicit status and entitlement terms rather than assuming that the newest-looking number is live.
What “delayed” and “live” actually mean
“Live” is everyday language. Market-data policies more often distinguish real-time data from delayed data using a defined interval and a particular product or venue. A display can therefore be current relative to a delayed feed while still being behind the market.

Nasdaq’s delay guidance recognizes multiple treatments, including 15-minute and 24-hour intervals. NYSE’s cited policy describes a 15-minute interval and a midnight Eastern Standard Time interval in its delayed-data rules. These are policy categories, not a claim that every free quote page or brokerage screen uses those exact delays.
Where to find the status label
There is no universal placement. Check the quote page and then the surrounding account controls:
- Quote header or ticker row: Look immediately beside the symbol, price, or exchange name for “delayed,” “real-time,” or an information icon.
- Chart controls: A chart may identify delayed data separately from the quote card. Check the chart’s legend, tooltip, and settings rather than assuming the chart and quote use the same feed.
- Order ticket: Some interfaces disclose market-data status near bid and ask fields. The order ticket can still show a quote that is not guaranteed to be the eventual fill.
- Account or subscription page: Search market-data, exchange permissions, quote entitlements, or data subscriptions. The wording and navigation are provider-specific.
- Footnotes and help panels: Read disclosures below the quote or behind an information icon. A small “D” or clock symbol may be explained there.
An exchange-compliant disclosure should be understandable without guessing. If the only indication is an unexplained icon or a timestamp with no status, treat the feed as unverified until the provider’s documentation identifies it.
How to interpret the timestamp
A timestamp is useful, but it is only one piece of evidence. First determine what event it timestamps. “Last trade” is different from “bid updated,” “ask updated,” “bar close,” and “previous close.” A quote application can refresh its screen at 10:15 while still displaying a last trade from 10:00.
Check the clock and time zone
Convert the displayed time to Eastern Time when evaluating U.S. stocks, and check whether daylight-saving rules are being applied. A time that appears several hours old may simply be shown in another zone. Conversely, a time that matches your local clock can still belong to a delayed product if the provider stamped the delayed publication when it was sent to your screen.
Match the timestamp to the session
At 11:00 a.m. Eastern during regular trading, a last-trade timestamp from 10:45 a.m. could indicate a thinly traded stock with no intervening trade, a delayed feed, or a stale field that has not refreshed. The status label and other fields help distinguish those cases. After 4:00 p.m. Eastern, a timestamp from the close may be correct even though no new regular-session trades are occurring.

Understand bar timestamps
Charts aggregate trades into intervals such as one minute or one day. A one-minute candle labeled 10:15 may represent trades during that minute, close at its end, or be displayed after a processing delay. Compare the chart’s data-status note with the quote card; do not infer streaming status from a moving chart alone.

The SEC describes regular U.S. stock trading hours as 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time. Pre-market and after-hours sessions differ by venue, security, and provider. A quote that is unchanged outside regular hours may be accurate because no qualifying trade has occurred, not because the feed stopped working.
Regular session
During regular hours, compare timestamps and quote fields as close together as possible. If one source identifies a 15-minute delay and another identifies real-time data, their prices should not be expected to update simultaneously.
Pre-market and after-hours
Extended-hours venues are not linked in the same way as the regular market. The SEC notes that consolidated quote and trade information may not be readily available as it is during regular hours. Two displays can therefore differ because they are showing activity from different venues, not simply because one screen is stale. Record the session label and venue before deciding that a discrepancy proves a delay.
Market closed
When the market is closed, “current” usually means the most recent eligible trade or the official close, not a live transaction. A quote marked “closed” or “previous close” should not be compared with an intraday bid or ask as though all fields describe the same moment.

Verify the market-data entitlement for that symbol
Real-time and delayed data are separate treatments. A provider can make one product real-time while another remains delayed, or require an exchange permission, account setting, or separate agreement. Check the terms for the exact security and venue you are viewing.

- Confirm that the account is logged into the profile with the expected permissions.
- Identify the listing and exchange, especially when the same company trades on multiple venues or in multiple countries.
- Check whether the entitlement covers quotes, trades, depth of book, charts, and alerts separately.
- Look for an expiration, trial, or one-time activation that may have changed the status.
- Read whether the entitlement applies only during regular hours or also to extended sessions.
The exchange policies cited here do not prescribe click-by-click instructions for any individual broker or website. If the account page does not state the status, ask the provider which market-data product supplies the field and what delay interval applies.
Cross-check with a second source without creating a false test
A second display is most useful when it is explicit about its status and you compare equivalent fields. Record both screens at nearly the same time and use the same symbol, listing, and session.

Investor.gov describes a quote as including bid and offer prices, while the consolidated tape reports latest price and volume information from market centers. A consolidated source can therefore be useful for comparison, but you still need to inspect the status and session of the interface displaying it.

Do not confuse quote fields
Many apparent “delay” problems are actually comparisons of different fields.

The SEC’s investor materials caution that a displayed “close” can follow different conventions around after-hours activity. Confirm the field name before concluding that two services disagree.
Why two apps can show different prices
- Different delay intervals: One service may be 15 minutes behind while another is real-time.
- Different venues or coverage: Especially in extended hours, each source may receive trades or quotes from a different venue.
- Different fields: One screen may show the last trade and another the bid, ask, or official close.
- Different session filters: One chart may include pre-market and after-hours data while another shows regular hours only.
- Different update cadence: A real-time product can still refresh fields at different rates; a quote card and chart need not repaint simultaneously.
- Thin trading: The last trade can remain unchanged while displayed bids and asks move.
Use the status, timestamp, field name, session, and venue together. A single price difference cannot identify which explanation applies.

Why a live quote cannot guarantee your execution price
Real-time display and order execution are separate questions. The SEC’s Understanding Order Types – Investor Bulletin states: “the last-traded price is not necessarily the price at which a market order will be executed.” Prices can change between display and submission, and available liquidity and demand can produce a different fill.

The quote says “updated now,” but the price is behind another screen
“Updated now” may describe when your app refreshed its display, not when the underlying trade occurred. Open the field details, find the last-trade timestamp, and check the data-status label and entitlement. Then compare the same field, session, and venue on the second source.
No delay label appears anywhere
Do not infer real-time status from silence. Search the provider’s market-data terms or account settings. If those documents do not identify the product, contact support and ask specifically whether the symbol’s bid, ask, last trade, chart, and extended-hours data are real-time or delayed.
The two sources match exactly
Matching prices are reassuring but not conclusive. A delayed source can match a real-time source when no trade or quote change occurred during the delay interval. Verify the explicit status and timestamp rather than treating agreement as proof.

Check whether both displays include extended hours and whether they cover the same venue. The SEC warns that extended-hours markets are not linked like the regular market, so differing prices may reflect legitimate venue fragmentation.

The chart moves, but the order ticket looks stale
Compare the chart’s session, interval, and data source with the order ticket’s quote fields. They may use different products or refresh schedules. Do not submit an order until you understand which fields are being displayed and their status.
The timestamp is old during regular hours
Check whether the stock has traded recently, whether the timestamp belongs to a bid or ask rather than a trade, and whether a delay disclaimer is present. A genuinely inactive security can have an old last trade, but an old timestamp across all fields suggests a feed or entitlement issue.
When paying for real-time data may make sense
If you need current intraday information, choose a market-data product that explicitly covers the exchanges, symbols, quote fields, and sessions you use. Confirm the recurring or one-time cost, account requirements, redistribution restrictions, and whether depth-of-book data is separate. Do not assume that paying for one real-time entitlement removes delays from every chart, alert, international listing, or extended-hours feed in the same account.

For occasional investors, a delayed quote may be adequate for research and long-horizon decisions. For an investor who must monitor an intraday price, a clearly identified real-time entitlement is more appropriate—but it still does not guarantee an execution price.
A compact checklist to save
- Is there an explicit “delayed” or “real-time” label?
- What exact field does the timestamp describe?
- Is the time shown in Eastern Time or another zone?
- Is the market in regular hours, extended hours, or closed?
- Which listing, exchange, and venue supply the quote?
- Does the account have the entitlement for that product?
- Are you comparing bid with bid, ask with ask, and last trade with last trade?
- Does a second source state its own data status?
- Could a different close convention or venue explain the discrepancy?
- Are you treating a live display as information—not as a guaranteed fill?
The practical conclusion
Start with the provider’s explicit status label, then validate the timestamp, session, and entitlement for the exact market-data product. Use a clearly identified second source only as a like-for-like cross-check. Outside regular hours, account for fragmented venues and different close conventions. Once those checks are complete, you can tell whether the number is delayed or represented as real-time without confusing feed freshness with execution certainty.
