There is no Steam-wide guarantee that a Free Weekend save will survive. Whether you can resume later depends on the individual game’s save system, whether its progress files are included in Steam Cloud, and whether the latest save successfully synchronized before the event ended. The right to keep launching the game is a separate issue: many events require you to purchase the full game, even when the save itself remains available.
Before the event closes, verify the game’s current announcement, check its Steam Cloud information, inspect the per-game Cloud setting, and wait for synchronization to finish. If the game stores progress only on your computer, preserve the local save before uninstalling or changing devices.
Free-play access and save retention are different questions
A Free Weekend gives your account temporary permission to download and play a particular game. When that entitlement expires, the game may stop launching until you buy it. That does not automatically mean Steam has deleted your save. Conversely, a game can retain a save that you cannot use until you purchase the game.

A title-specific example: Dinkum
In its March 30, 2025 Free Weekend announcement, Dinkum’s publisher said players had to purchase the game to continue after the event. The same announcement said progress would carry over after purchase only if the save data was still available. That is useful evidence of how one game handled its event, not a rule for every Steam Free Weekend.
The four checks that answer the question for a specific game
Use these checks together. A “yes” to only one of them is not enough to promise that your progress will return.

Steam Support explains that developers can customize how Cloud is used, including which user files are uploaded, and that many games do not use Steam Cloud for save games at all. Read the official Steam Cloud FAQ rather than treating the store-page logo as a guarantee.

1. Read the game’s current event notice
Open the game’s news, event announcement, or official support page from its Steam community or store listing. Look for wording about “continue after the free period,” “purchase required,” “save data,” “progress,” or “carry over.” Check the dates and title carefully; an old announcement may describe a different event or a previous version.
If the notice says progress carries over only when a save remains available, treat that condition literally. It may mean the file must still be on the original computer, in Steam Cloud, or both. If the notice says nothing, do not assume either retention or deletion.

2. Check the store page for Steam Cloud
On the game’s Steam store page, look through the feature information for the Steam Cloud logo or label. Its presence means the game has some Cloud integration. It does not establish that the campaign, profile, world, settings, or every other file is synchronized. Developers decide which files are sent to Cloud and how the game uses them.
A missing Cloud indicator is a strong warning that you may be dealing with a local save, although the publisher’s documentation remains the best authority for that title.

- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click the Free Weekend game and choose Properties.
- On the General tab, find the game’s Steam Cloud synchronization option.
- Make sure the option is enabled when the title supports Cloud. Do not enable it blindly if the publisher gives a different instruction for that game.
Also check Steam’s global setting under Steam > Settings > Cloud. A game-level setting cannot upload files if Cloud is disabled for the Steam client. Menu wording can vary slightly by Steam client release, but the relevant controls are the global Cloud setting and the game’s General-tab setting.
4. Make and close a clearly identifiable save
Save normally inside the game, then note the character, world, slot, or chapter you changed. If the game has a manual save command, use it rather than relying only on an autosave. Exit through the game’s normal quit option so it has time to write its files.
5. Stay online and wait for synchronization
Keep an internet connection active while you close the game and Steam processes the files. Wait until Steam reports that synchronization has completed. Do not shut down the computer, move to another device, or uninstall while a sync is pending.

If Steam displays a synchronization error, stop and resolve it before launching again. Steam warns that ignoring an error and starting the game can create a conflict or leave an older version as the one that is uploaded. The newest save may still be on the original computer; preserve that copy while investigating.

How Steam Cloud affects a Free Weekend save
Cloud is selected and controlled by the developer
Steam Support states: “Developers are able to completely customize how The Steam Cloud is used for their games, including which user files are uploaded.” A game might synchronize a profile but not screenshots, configuration, mods, or a particular mode’s data. Another title might use a publisher-operated account system instead of Steam Cloud. The store indicator therefore answers “does this game use Cloud?” rather than “will my exact progress return?”
Local-only saves remain on the machine
Steam Support also notes that many games do not use Steam Cloud to store saves. In that case, your progress remains on the computer where you played. Buying the game later through the same Steam account may let the installed game read that file, but uninstalling, deleting the game’s data, resetting the operating system, or changing computers can remove your only copy.
Cloud files and local files can be in different places
Steam lists these default locations for Steam Cloud files:
- Windows:
C:Program Files (x86)Steamuserdata - macOS:
~/Library/Application Support/Steam/userdata - Linux:
~/.local/share/Steam/userdata
These are Steam’s Cloud-data folders, not a universal location for every game’s ordinary local saves. Individual titles may use a folder in your user profile, a documents directory, the game’s installation directory, or a publisher-specific location. Use the game’s official support instructions to identify the local path before copying anything.

If the game does not use Cloud: protect the local save
Do not uninstall a local-save game until you know where its files are and have made a backup. A practical sequence is:
- Find the publisher’s save-location instructions for the exact game and operating system.
- Close the game and Steam so no file is being written.
- Copy the entire save folder, retaining its internal structure and file extensions.
- Store the copy outside the Steam installation and label it with the game name and date.
- After purchasing or reinstalling, launch the game once, quit it, and then restore the backup only if the publisher’s instructions say it is safe.
Do not edit save files or replace a newer file with an older backup without first keeping an additional copy. Some games use multiple files, a database, or an account-linked identifier; copying only the visibly named slot may not be sufficient.

The latest progress is on the original computer
Leave the original installation intact. Reconnect it to the internet, confirm that the game is closed, and let Steam retry synchronization. If Steam asks you to choose between local and Cloud data, compare the timestamps and choose the copy that contains the latest confirmed progress. When uncertain, make a manual backup before selecting an option.
The other computer shows an older save
Do not continue playing on the second device, because a new session can overwrite the version you want. Return to the original computer, verify that the save opens there, and resolve its Cloud upload first. Then start the game on the second device only after Steam has completed the download.

The event has ended before synchronization completed
Keep the installation and local files. The end of the play entitlement does not by itself prove that the save was deleted. If you later purchase the game, its full version may read the retained local or Cloud data. If the game is removed before you preserve a local-only save, recovery may not be possible.

Steam says the file is synchronized but the game starts without progress
Check whether you are using the same Steam account, the same game branch or edition, and the same publisher account if the title requires one. Confirm that the game’s own save menu points to the expected profile or world. Cloud can be functioning correctly while the game is looking in a different local folder or account profile.
Steam Support says it cannot recover lost saves or resolve Cloud conflicts for a particular title. The developer can explain which files are integrated with Cloud and where local saves are stored, so contact the game’s official support channel with your operating system, event dates, and the exact error message.
How to decide whether uninstalling is safe

What happens after you buy the game
Purchasing the full game normally changes your permission to launch it; it does not recreate a save that was deleted or never synchronized. Install or unlock the same title on the same Steam account, then allow Steam Cloud to finish downloading before opening the game on a new device. If the save was local-only, place the backed-up files in the location specified by the publisher.
If the event announcement promised carry-over only while data remained available, that condition still applies after purchase. The Dinkum announcement is an example: its promise was conditional on the save data still being present, not a guarantee that Steam would recover a missing file.
When the official information is unclear
Ask the developer or publisher rather than relying on forum guesses. Include the exact game edition, your operating system, whether you used Steam Cloud, whether you uninstalled, and the date of your last successful session. Ask two separate questions: whether the Free Weekend entitlement requires purchase to continue, and which files store progress and are covered by Cloud.
Official community posts can help when they are current and clearly written by the developer. Treat player reports as clues, not proof for your installation: different operating systems, game branches, mods, and Cloud settings can produce different results.

- “The Free Weekend ended, so Steam deleted my save.” Access can end while a local or Cloud save remains available.
- “I can ignore the sync warning and fix it later.” Launching during a conflict can upload or create the wrong version.
- “Reinstalling will restore everything.” Reinstallation cannot restore a local file that was deleted and was never backed up.
- “A save on one computer proves it is on Cloud.” A local save can work perfectly while Cloud is disabled or excludes that file.
- “Steam Support can recover any missing save.” Steam Support says recovery and title-specific Cloud conflicts must be handled with the game’s developer.
A quick pre-expiry checklist
- Read the game’s latest Free Weekend announcement and note any purchase requirement.
- Check the store page for the Steam Cloud indicator.
- Inspect Library > game > Properties > General and the global Steam > Settings > Cloud setting.
- Create a final save, close the game normally, and remain online.
- Wait for synchronization to complete; do not dismiss an error.
- If Cloud coverage is unknown or absent, locate and back up the local save.
- Keep the original installation until you have confirmed the save on the purchased or replacement installation.
