Check two things separately: whether a configuration backup associated with your account may have been accessed in SonicWall’s cloud service, and whether anyone accessed or changed the firewall itself. Start with SonicWall’s incident notice and device-impact information, then investigate the specific appliance’s configuration, logs and related network records. A finding about a cloud backup does not establish that its firewall was breached.
What does “exposed” mean in this case?

How do I check whether my firewall backup files were accessed?
- Open SonicWall’s MySonicWall Cloud Backup File Incident notice. Check the device-impact information available for your organization’s account and each relevant appliance. Follow the notice’s current customer instructions; incident scope and guidance can change.
- Record the result for each device. Keep the appliance’s account association and serial number with the status shown, along with the date you checked. Treat a result about a backup file as a backup-exposure finding, not as evidence of appliance access.
- Keep separate incidents separate. In a November 4, 2025 update, SonicWall said its completed Mandiant investigation confirmed unauthorized access to firewall configuration backup files in a specific cloud environment. The update distinguished that event from ongoing Akira ransomware attacks against firewalls and other edge devices. Which SonicWall advisory applies to my appliance?
Before following a firmware or account recommendation, identify the exact device and how it is configured. Record:
- Model, generation, serial number and the MySonicWall account associated with it.
- Installed SonicOS version.
- Whether SSLVPN is enabled and which interfaces expose management access.
- Whether remote access uses locally managed accounts, including accounts or configuration migrated from an earlier-generation appliance.
Compare those details with the affected-device and version information in the current SonicOS improper access-control notice and any other applicable vendor advisory. SonicWall’s December 18, 2025 notice lists affected SonicOS versions and advises patching affected products. It also gives password guidance for certain Gen 5 and Gen 6 SSLVPN users with locally managed accounts. Those instructions are not a blanket statement about every model or firmware: check the notice’s specific affected-version table and guidance against your appliance.

What logs and device evidence should I check?
Use records that can show what happened on this firewall, rather than inferring compromise from an advisory or cloud-backup status. Review the event and authentication logs available for your installed SonicOS version, focusing on SSLVPN and administrative access. Check for activity that does not match authorized work:

- Unfamiliar successful logins, or access at times that do not fit administrator schedules or change records.
- Unexpected account, permission or MFA changes.
- Configuration edits that cannot be matched to an approved change or known administrator.
Validate suspicious entries against change records and expected administrator activity before treating them as malicious. SonicWall’s SSLVPN threat-activity guidance for Gen 7 and newer firewalls recommends examining packet captures, logs, MFA settings and recent configuration changes. It also advises rotating credentials that may have been exposed.
Log locations and available history depend on SonicOS version, configuration, logging and retention. For example, SonicWall’s SonicOS 6.5.1 Log Events Reference Guide describes an event log for potential security threats that can be viewed or exported. Its instructions are specific to that version; do not assume newer releases have the same menus. SonicWall’s public guidance does not establish one universal indicator that proves compromise across all generations and configurations.

What should I do if I find suspicious activity?
- Preserve useful evidence. When practical, export or otherwise retain relevant logs and configuration records before changes could overwrite or remove them. Note what you collected and when.
- Correlate the timeline. Compare firewall records with identity-provider, VPN, endpoint and network records available to your organization. This can help distinguish authorized administration from unexplained activity.
- Follow the current advisory and address exposed credentials. If credentials may have been exposed or activity is unexplained, follow SonicWall’s current instructions, rotate affected local and connected-service credentials, and review MFA configuration.
- Escalate when needed. Involve your incident-response team if evidence suggests unauthorized access or records are incomplete. A qualified incident-response provider can help assess evidence your team cannot interpret.
A password reset, factory reset or firmware update is a response action, not proof of the incident’s scope or proof that no intrusion occurred. Preserve and assess the available evidence as part of the investigation.
