Measure four things before you buy: the door thickness, backset, face-bore diameter and edge-bore diameter. Then compare every measurement with the current installation guide for the exact smart-lock model and market version. Also check the strike plate, jamb pocket, handing and door alignment. A lock that matches the door thickness can still fail if its backset, bore, strike or replacement scope is different.

What determines whether a smart lock fits

Smart locks are not governed by one universal door standard. Physical compatibility depends on the lock mechanism and on the holes and reinforcement already in your door. Two products sold as smart deadbolts may accept different door-thickness ranges, backsets or latch bores. A model sold in one country can also have different dimensions from a similarly named model in another market.

Fit has two parts. First, the lock must physically mount in the door: its body, spindle and mounting hardware must pass through the available holes. Second, the bolt must travel straight into the strike in the jamb. A lock can satisfy the first test and still bind because the door is sagging, the strike is misplaced or the bolt pocket is too shallow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the exact model number and market edition when checking specifications. Manufacturer installation instructions are more authoritative than a retailer’s generic “standard door” description. Keep the instructions open while measuring, because terms such as face bore, edge bore and backset describe specific locations rather than approximate sizes.

The measurements you need

Door thickness

Measure the slab itself at the lock, not the trim, weather strip or decorative escutcheon. Open the door and place a tape measure across the narrow edge or use a caliper if the edge is accessible. Record the result in the unit used by the installation guide. Do not infer thickness from the home’s age or from the existing lock.

Published requirements illustrate why the model matters. Schlage’s Control BE467F existing-hole guide specifies 1⅜–1¾ inches and says a thick-door kit is available through product support. Level lists 1¾–2 inches for Level Locks. Those are product examples, not a universal smart-lock range. If your door is outside the stated range, ask the manufacturer whether an approved kit exists; do not assume longer screws or improvised spacers will make the lock safe.

Backset

Backset is the distance from the door edge to the center of the large circular hole through the door face. Measure in a straight line from the edge where the latch or bolt exits to the center of the deadbolt bore. Schlage’s terminology definition uses this same edge-to-centerline measurement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Many guides list two choices, commonly 2⅜ or 2¾ inches, but that pair is not guaranteed for every model. Schlage’s BE467F guide allows those two values and warns that a different existing backset will not fit that lock properly. A backset mismatch places the bolt body and interior assembly at the wrong distance from the edge, even if the face bore looks correct.

Face-bore diameter

The face bore is the large hole drilled through the broad face of the door for the deadbolt assembly. Measure its diameter, not the diameter of the metal trim around it. A 2⅛-inch face bore is common in the documented examples, but you must verify the selected model’s requirement.

Edge-bore diameter

The edge bore, also called the latch or bolt bore, is the hole drilled into the narrow door edge. Measure across the opening where the bolt or latch slides out. Schlage’s BE467F instructions specify a 1-inch edge bore. A smart lock’s bolt housing may require a different size, and an edge opening that is too small can prevent the mechanism from seating squarely.

Spacing between multiple holes

If the hardware has more than one bore, measure the center-to-center distance between them. This applies to some interconnected or multi-point replacement hardware, not to every single deadbolt. Schlage’s FE410F instructions require either 4 or 5½ inches between its two holes. Treat that as a requirement for the FE410F installation, not as a general smart-lock rule.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Strike plate, jamb and bolt pocket

Measure and photograph the strike plate on the frame before ordering. Check its overall length and width, the shape of the opening and the location of the screw holes. The bolt must enter the opening without scraping the plate. Behind the opening, the jamb needs a sufficiently deep pocket for the bolt; roughly one inch of bolt-hole depth is helpful for avoiding calibration problems according to Level’s door requirements.

Level documents both short and tall strike-plate options and notes that a rectangular jamb opening may need modification for a round bolt-and-strike opening. That is a preparation issue, not proof that every rectangular opening can be converted safely. Follow the exact template supplied with your lock.

Door handing and replacement scope

Handing describes whether the door is left- or right-opening as viewed from the specified side. Some products support both orientations; Yale’s New Zealand support page for the Libi Digital Lock Keyed explicitly supports left- and right-handed doors. Confirm the requirement for your own model instead of assuming the motor will automatically accommodate either direction.

Also establish what the product replaces. A retrofit smart deadbolt may replace only the interior and exterior deadbolt components while retaining an existing lower handle. Other products replace an interconnected or complete lockset and therefore need additional holes or different spacing. The installation guide should state whether the existing latch, cylinder, strike and exterior trim remain in place.

How to measure your door before shopping

  1. Identify the exact product and market. Write down the full model number, generation and country version you are considering. Open that model’s current manufacturer installation or door-preparation guide before relying on a compatibility chart.
  2. Make the lock area accessible. Leave the hardware installed if it does not obstruct measurement. If trim hides an opening, remove only the trim that the manufacturer’s instructions allow you to remove, and keep the screws and parts together.
  3. Measure thickness. Measure the slab at the lock location. Take a second reading near the top or bottom edge if the door appears tapered, layered or unusually thick, and record the largest relevant dimension.
  4. Measure backset. Measure from the door edge to the center of the large face bore. Do not measure to the edge of the trim or to the center of the small edge bore.
  5. Measure both bores. Record the diameter of the face bore and the diameter of the edge bore separately. A ruler across the opening is usually sufficient; a caliper gives a more precise result when the opening is partially covered.
  6. Check for additional holes. If the lock has an upper and lower bore, measure the center-to-center spacing. Note whether the holes are aligned vertically and whether either one is an unusual shape.
  7. Inspect the frame. Record the strike-plate dimensions, screw locations, opening shape and approximate pocket depth. Look for crushed wood, loose screws or multiple old mortises that could interfere with a new bolt.
  8. Test the existing door. With the door closed, turn the existing deadbolt slowly. It should extend and retract without lifting, pushing or pulling the door. Repeat with the door open; a difference between the two tests indicates an alignment problem that should be corrected before installing a motorized lock.
  9. Compare every value. Put your measurements beside the model guide’s thickness, backset, bore, spacing, strike and handing requirements. A single mismatch is enough to pause the purchase and ask the manufacturer or a qualified installer for a model-specific answer.

Published fit examples and what they prove

The following specifications come from manufacturer materials for named products. They demonstrate the range of requirements a buyer may encounter; they do not establish a standard that all smart locks share.

How to interpret a mismatch

What does not match Likely consequence Safe next step
Door is outside the thickness range Mounting screws, spindle or interior housing may not engage correctly. Look for an official thick-door kit or another model. Do not stack unapproved washers or spacers.
Backset differs The bolt body sits at the wrong distance from the edge and may not align with the strike. Choose a model supporting your measured backset or follow the guide’s approved door-preparation method.
Face bore is too small or too large The housing may not pass through the door or may lack a stable bearing surface. Check whether the guide explicitly permits enlargement or specifies an adapter; otherwise stop and ask the manufacturer.
Edge bore differs The latch or bolt case may not seat flush, causing friction or loose mounting. Use the supplied template only if it authorizes re-drilling; otherwise select compatible hardware.
Multiple-hole spacing differs Interconnected components will not line up with the existing holes. Verify whether the product replaces that hardware or requires a new layout. Do not drill from a generic diagram.
Strike opening or pocket is wrong The motor can stall, calibration can fail or the bolt can remain partly extended. Correct the jamb with the model’s template or have a door-hardware professional assess it.

A mismatch is not automatically repairable. Some guides permit a particular smaller hole to be enlarged, and the BE467F documentation mentions a thick-door kit through product support. Those permissions apply only where the relevant manufacturer guide says they do; they do not make every door modification acceptable.

Check the strike and alignment before installation

Motorized locks magnify small alignment problems because the motor has to move the bolt without your hand supplying extra force. Close the door normally and observe whether the latch enters the strike cleanly. Then lock and unlock it several times with the door open, followed by several cycles with the door closed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you must lift the door, pull it toward the frame or push it inward to turn the deadbolt, correct the underlying alignment first. Common clues include a door that rubs at the top, loose or stripped strike screws, a strike plate sitting too far from the jamb surface, or a pocket filled with paint and debris. Tightening screws or carefully correcting the strike may solve a minor issue, but do not remove structural material without the lock’s template and an understanding of the jamb construction.

Confirm that the bolt has clear depth behind the strike and that the door seals normally when closed. A bolt that reaches the opening but bottoms out in shallow wood can cause calibration errors and premature motor wear.

Choose the right kind of replacement

Existing-hole deadbolt retrofit

This approach is appropriate when the current door already has a separate deadbolt and the new product is designed to reuse that preparation. Your key checks are thickness, backset, face bore, edge bore, strike and whether the interior and exterior assemblies fit the retained hardware.

Interconnected or multi-hole hardware

When one handle and deadbolt operate together, count every bore and measure their spacing. The Schlage FE410F example shows why: its instructions specify 4- or 5½-inch spacing between two holes. A single-deadbolt compatibility chart cannot answer this question.

Full lockset replacement

A product that replaces the complete lockset may include a new latch, strike and exterior trim, but it still needs the door thickness and frame preparation listed in its guide. Check which old parts are removed and whether the supplied strike covers the existing screw marks and mortises.

Create a compatibility record

Keep one record for the door and copy the manufacturer’s requirements beside it. Include:

  • Door thickness at the lock location, with the unit used.
  • Backset measured from the edge to the face-bore center.
  • Face-bore and edge-bore diameters.
  • Any second-bore spacing and the shape of each opening.
  • Strike-plate dimensions, opening shape and bolt-pocket depth.
  • Door handing and swing direction.
  • Which existing parts the selected lock keeps, replaces or requires you to remove.
  • The exact guide revision or access date, since online specifications can change.

Use the record when contacting support. Sending the model number and measured values in one message is more reliable than describing the door as “standard.” Include clear photos of the door edge, face bore and strike with a ruler beside each opening, while avoiding photographs that expose keys or personal security information.

Installation-day validation

  1. Dry-fit before tightening. Follow the guide’s order and confirm that the bolt case, spindle and mounting plate sit squarely without forcing them.
  2. Keep the latch retracted while positioning. If the instructions call for a particular bolt position, use it; forcing a partially extended bolt can distort alignment.
  3. Tighten evenly. Over-tightening can pinch the mechanism, while loose screws allow the interior assembly to move. Use the supplied fasteners unless the guide specifies an alternative.
  4. Cycle with the door open. Complete the manufacturer’s handing or calibration routine while the bolt has no strike resistance.
  5. Cycle with the door closed. Verify that the bolt enters the pocket without lifting, pushing or pulling the slab. Stop if the motor sounds strained or the bolt stops short.
  6. Recheck manual operation. Test the inside thumb turn, outside key or emergency method and any retained handle. A powered feature does not remove the need for a reliable mechanical escape route.

Troubleshooting fit and calibration problems

The lock will not seat flush

Recheck door thickness, bore diameter and whether the edge-bore opening is centered. Make sure a hidden trim ring, paint buildup or old reinforcement is not blocking the housing. If the guide does not authorize enlarging the opening, remove the lock and contact the manufacturer rather than filing by guesswork.

The bolt moves with the door open but not closed

This points to strike or jamb alignment rather than a motor setting. Inspect the strike screws, opening shape and pocket depth. Correct the frame according to the supplied template, then repeat the open- and closed-door tests.

Calibration fails repeatedly

Confirm that the bolt is fully retracted during the required setup step and that the door is not being pulled against the weather seal. Check for a shallow pocket or a bolt rubbing one side of the strike. A calibration failure after the dimensions and alignment are verified may require manufacturer support; do not keep forcing cycles.

The interior assembly binds when screws are tightened

Loosen the fasteners slightly and test whether the binding changes. If it does, the parts may be misaligned, the door may be outside the thickness range or the mounting plate may be contacting the bore edge. Reinstall using the guide’s sequence. Persistent binding is a fit problem, not something to cure with lubrication alone.

The existing key or handle no longer works

Stop and review the replacement scope. A retrofit product may require a particular cylinder or latch position, while a full lockset may intentionally remove the old component. Restore the original hardware if necessary and ask the manufacturer which parts are compatible with your exact model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When professional help is the safer choice

Call a locksmith or door-hardware installer when the door has unusual thickness, a mortise or interconnected arrangement not covered by the guide, damaged jamb framing, multiple overlapping bore holes, or a strike that cannot be corrected without removing substantial material. Professional help is also sensible when the door is a fire-rated, security-rated or building-controlled assembly whose preparation rules you do not know.

Give the installer your measurement record and the exact model guide. Ask them to verify both the door preparation and the frame alignment, not merely to mount the exterior keypad. A lock that can be screwed onto the door is not necessarily a lock that can lock reliably.

Final purchase checklist

  • The exact model and market version are identified.
  • Door thickness is within that model’s stated range.
  • Backset matches one of the model’s supported positions.
  • Face-bore and edge-bore diameters match the guide.
  • Any required second-bore spacing matches.
  • The supplied or approved strike fits the jamb, with adequate bolt-pocket depth.
  • Handing and replacement scope are compatible with the existing door.
  • The closed door already locks smoothly without lifting, pushing or pulling.
  • Any drilling, enlargement or thick-door kit is explicitly authorized for that model.

Only after every item is confirmed should you order or drill. Physical fit is a measurement-and-alignment question, so the manufacturer’s current preparation guide for the exact lock remains the final authority.
