No single at-home check can prove that a Samsung product is genuine. An IMEI match is useful, but Samsung warns that counterfeit devices may carry a genuine IMEI. Check several clues together—and if they conflict, ask a Samsung Authorized Service Center in your region to inspect the product.
What can—and cannot—confirm a Samsung product is genuine?
Samsung Electronics Colombia says there is no infallible way to authenticate a product by yourself. Its guidance applies to products purchased in Colombia; buyers elsewhere should use their local Samsung support channel. A service-center inspection is the way Samsung recommends resolving doubts with a complete review of the hardware and software.
An IMEI, model number, or serial number can help you check whether details agree, but none is conclusive on its own. Samsung specifically warns that some counterfeits may have a genuine IMEI printed on them. Treat each check below as one signal, not a pass/fail verdict.

- Compare it with the exact model. Check its menus, materials, weight, camera, and display against Samsung’s information for that model. If possible, compare it in person with the same model at an established retailer.
- Look at software and setup. Check whether the interface is translated appropriately and whether you can add a Samsung account without errors. Samsung Members availability can also be a useful clue.
- Check Play Protect certification. In the Google Play Store settings, look for “Device is certified” (Samsung Colombia’s Spanish guide gives the label as “El dispositivo está certificado”). Certification is a software indicator, not proof of authenticity.
- Compare identifiers across records. If the model, serial number, or IMEI on the device differs from the original packaging, receipt, or carrier account, investigate before relying on the product’s claimed identity.
These checks are most useful together. A convincing screen or matching identifier does not outweigh other inconsistencies.

Assess the seller and the offer before buying
- Be cautious if the price is strikingly low, the seller avoids specific questions, or the seller offers a supposed latest model before its official launch. Samsung Colombia identifies these as warning signs; none alone proves a device is counterfeit.
- Ask for the exact model and check that its design, features, and menus match Samsung’s information for that model and market.
- Prefer Samsung’s own store or established retail chains, as Samsung Colombia advises. A marketplace listing or familiar platform does not authenticate an individual seller or device.
- Where possible, inspect the product and its software before paying, and compare the device identifiers with the box and sales documents.
Find the model, serial number, and IMEI
A model number identifies a product model or family; a serial number identifies an individual unit. An IMEI is an identifier used by mobile devices that support it. Availability and location depend on the product and model. Samsung’s U.S. and Canadian instructions are regional guides; labels and menus may differ elsewhere.

On Galaxy phones and tablets, Samsung U.S. cautions that menu paths can vary by model, software, and carrier. Do not remove a sealed or integrated battery to find an identifier: Samsung UK warns that trying to remove a non-removable battery can damage the device and void its warranty.

What to do if you already own the product
- Open Settings > About phone or Settings > About tablet and note the displayed model and identifiers. Menu names may vary.
- Compare the details with the original box, receipt or other sales document, and carrier account if available. These are alternate places Samsung says the information may appear.
- Check the device’s setup, Samsung Members availability, Play Protect certification, and physical features against the exact model.
- If details conflict or the device still seems suspicious, contact Samsung support in your country and ask about inspection by an Authorized Service Center.
When to seek an authorized inspection
Escalate if identifiers disagree, the software or menus do not fit the claimed model, key features appear different, or the seller’s claims are hard to verify. Samsung Colombia recommends a complete review at an Authorized Samsung Service Center for products purchased in Colombia. For products bought elsewhere, contact Samsung’s local support channel to confirm the appropriate service option.

Bring the device and, if available, its packaging and proof of purchase. A technician can examine hardware and software; the at-home clues are useful for deciding when to seek that help, not a substitute for it.
