Run Windows’ DirectX Diagnostic Tool (dxdiag), write down your operating system, processor, memory, graphics card and video memory, then compare them with Rockstar’s current minimum requirements for the exact game and PC edition. Check storage and account or internet requirements separately. Meeting the minimum is a baseline, not a promise of smooth performance or a particular frame rate.
Start by identifying the exact game and PC edition
Rockstar titles can have separate PC editions with different hardware requirements. For example, Grand Theft Auto V Enhanced and Grand Theft Auto V Legacy have distinct requirement lists. Red Dead Redemption 2 and the separate PC release titled Red Dead Redemption are also different products with different specifications.
Before checking your computer, find the Rockstar support page for the game and edition you intend to install. Use the minimum column to judge whether your PC meets the published baseline; use the recommended column as a higher hardware tier. Do not apply one edition’s numbers to another. Rockstar notes that downloadable content and programming changes can affect requirements, so consult the current official page rather than relying on an old box, store listing, or forum post.
Rockstar’s compatibility guidance recommends using DirectX Diagnostic Tool to identify your computer’s hardware. That page was last updated April 28, 2024.

Find your PC’s specifications with dxdiag
- Open the Windows Start menu. Search for
Runand open it, or pressWindows key + R. - Enter
dxdiagand press Enter. If Windows asks whether to check for WHQL digital signatures, choose Yes. - On the System tab, record the operating system, processor and memory. These correspond to the OS, CPU and RAM lines on a game’s requirements page.
- Open the Display tab. Record the graphics-card name, manufacturer, chip type, approximate total memory and driver version/date. These details help identify the GPU and check the game’s stated video-memory requirement.
- If the requirements list a sound specification, open the Sound tab and note the available device information.
Rockstar’s article describes opening Start > Run and entering dxdiag; the tool’s tabs provide the hardware details needed for the comparison. If a computer has more than one Display tab, check each one and identify which graphics device is used for games. Laptop graphics switching and integrated-plus-discrete setups can make the first listed adapter an incomplete picture.
For a useful comparison, keep the game’s requirement page open while you record the results. Write down the exact CPU and GPU model strings rather than just “Intel,” “AMD,” or “NVIDIA,” and note the figures and units Rockstar lists. Then mark each category as matching, below the stated minimum, or unclear. This makes it easier to spot a single limiting component without treating the entire computer as one pass-or-fail number.
Understand what dxdiag is showing
Operating system, processor and memory
Compare the operating system edition and version with the game’s stated Windows requirement, not just the fact that Windows is installed. A requirement for 64-bit Windows 10, for example, is more specific than simply saying Windows 10. The processor line identifies the CPU model; the memory line reports installed system RAM. Match the published minimum rather than assuming a newer-looking model name automatically proves compatibility.
Pay attention to the full requirement, including qualifiers such as a specific Windows build or 64-bit edition. GTA V Enhanced’s minimum, for example, calls for Windows 10 build 1909 or above, while the Legacy minimum specifies Windows 10 64-bit. The requirements for the two editions are not interchangeable. If the PC’s Windows version does not clearly meet the wording on the relevant page, verify the version in Windows before concluding that it passes.
Graphics card and video memory
The Display tab identifies the graphics device and reports approximate video memory. Compare both the GPU model and the VRAM amount when Rockstar specifies them. A graphics card name alone can be insufficient if two listed models have different memory capacities.
Integrated graphics may borrow shared system memory. That shared amount is not the same thing as dedicated VRAM on a graphics card, so do not count all reported shared memory as if it were dedicated video memory. Rockstar also cautions that some mobile chipsets, integrated graphics and AGP graphics cards may be incompatible, and that specifications not listed by Rockstar may not be supported.
Keep the graphics model and memory figure together when comparing. For example, Rockstar lists GTX 1630 (4GB VRAM) or RX 6400 (4GB VRAM) for GTA V Enhanced minimum, and GTX 770 2GB or Radeon R9 280 3GB for Red Dead Redemption 2 minimum. Those are examples for their named editions only; they do not establish a general rule for comparing different GPU brands or models. Avoid deciding that a card qualifies based only on a similar model number or a larger memory figure.

Drivers, sound and storage
Keep the driver version and date available when troubleshooting, but do not treat a driver date as proof that the PC meets the GPU requirement. Check the game’s sound line if one is listed; the examples below specify DirectX-compatible audio for some releases.
dxdiag does not replace checking the game’s installation-space requirement. In File Explorer, open This PC and check the free space on the drive where you plan to install the game. Also note whether Rockstar specifies an HDD, SSD or a particular drive capability: having enough free capacity does not necessarily satisfy a drive-type requirement.
Capacity and drive type are separate checks. Red Dead Redemption 2 lists 150GB storage for both minimum and recommended tiers, while GTA V Enhanced lists a 105GB SSD minimum and a DirectStorage-compatible drive for its recommended tier. GTA V Legacy specifies a 125GB HDD. Do not substitute one game’s storage figure or drive type for another’s, and do not assume that a drive with enough free space automatically satisfies a stated capability.
Compare your PC with Rockstar’s published requirements
Check every listed minimum category: operating system, processor, RAM, graphics card, VRAM, storage capacity and type, and sound where specified. A match on one category does not make up for a shortfall in another. The specifications below are examples from Rockstar’s support pages; each applies only to the named game or edition.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →A practical comparison is a checklist, not an average: an especially strong processor does not cancel a GPU or storage requirement that falls short. Compare the exact listed model, system-memory amount, video-memory amount, operating-system requirement and drive entry. If the list names alternatives joined by “or,” use the alternatives Rockstar gives for that edition; do not assume that a product from another family is equivalent just because its number is higher.
Grand Theft Auto V: Enhanced and Legacy
Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto V PC system requirements page was last updated December 10, 2025. It lists the following separate tiers:
| Edition and tier | Operating system | Processor | Memory | Graphics | Storage and audio |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| GTA V Enhanced minimum | Windows 10 build 1909 or above | Intel Core i7-4770 or AMD FX-9590 | 8GB RAM | NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1630 (4GB VRAM) or AMD Radeon RX 6400 (4GB VRAM) | 105GB SSD; DirectX 10-compatible audio |
| GTA V Enhanced recommended | Windows 11 | Intel Core i5-9600K or AMD Ryzen 5 3600 | 16GB dual-channel RAM | NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 (8GB VRAM) or AMD Radeon RX 6600 XT (8GB VRAM) | 105GB DirectStorage-compatible drive |
| GTA V Legacy minimum | Windows 10 64-bit | Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 or AMD Phenom 9850 Quad-Core | 4GB RAM | NVIDIA 9800 GT (1GB) or AMD HD 4870 (1GB) | 125GB HDD; DirectX 10-compatible audio |
| GTA V Legacy recommended | Windows 10 64-bit | Intel Core i5 3470 or AMD X8 FX-8350 | 8GB RAM | NVIDIA GTX 660 (2GB) or AMD HD7870 (2GB) | 125GB HDD; no separate audio requirement stated in this tier |
Do not infer that Legacy’s lower figures apply to Enhanced. Likewise, Rockstar’s Enhanced recommended storage entry is more specific than simply having 105GB free: it calls for a DirectStorage-compatible drive.

The tables show why checking only the title name can lead to the wrong answer. Both GTA V editions have their own CPU, memory, graphics and storage rows. The Enhanced minimum specifies 8GB RAM and a 4GB graphics card, while Legacy specifies 4GB RAM and graphics models listed with 1GB. Those figures describe each edition’s own published requirement, not a universal GTA V specification.

The requirements for these two releases are not interchangeable. Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption 2 PC system requirements page was last updated April 30, 2024. The separate Red Dead Redemption PC system requirements page was last updated October 16, 2024.
| Game and tier | Operating system | Processor | Memory | Graphics | Storage and audio |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Red Dead Redemption 2 minimum | Windows 10 64-bit | Intel Core i5-2500K or AMD FX-6300 | 8GB | NVIDIA GeForce GTX 770 2GB or AMD Radeon R9 280 3GB | 150GB storage; DirectX-compatible sound |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 recommended | Windows 10 64-bit | Intel Core i7-4770K or AMD Ryzen 5 1500X | 12GB | NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB or AMD Radeon RX 480 4GB | 150GB storage; DirectX-compatible sound |
| Red Dead Redemption minimum | Windows 10 64-bit | Intel Core i5-4670 or AMD FX-9590 | 8GB | NVIDIA GTX 960 or AMD R7 360 | 12GB HDD; no sound requirement stated on this page |
| Red Dead Redemption recommended | Windows 10 64-bit | Intel Core i5-8500 or AMD Ryzen 5 3500X | 8GB | NVIDIA RTX 2070 or AMD RX 5700 XT | 12GB SSD; no sound requirement stated on this page |
The separate Red Dead Redemption page does not specify VRAM figures for its graphics models, unlike the Red Dead Redemption 2 page. Do not fill in an unstated requirement by borrowing a number from another game or edition.
These examples also show that requirements can differ in storage details and memory tiers as well as graphics. Red Dead Redemption 2 lists 8GB RAM minimum and 12GB recommended; the separate Red Dead Redemption page lists 8GB for both tiers. Use the row for the product you own or plan to install, even when the titles sound similar.
Check the launcher separately from the game
The Rockstar Games Launcher has its own baseline, but installing or running the launcher does not establish that a game will run. Rockstar’s launcher system requirements page, last updated May 1, 2024, lists Windows 10 64-bit, an Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 or AMD Phenom 9850 processor, 2GB memory, a DX11-supported graphics card and 1GB of launcher space as minimums. Rockstar says supported games need additional installation space and may have additional requirements.
Recommended Free Tools
Use the game’s own support page for its requirements after checking the launcher baseline. Game pages also describe Rockstar account and internet needs for activation, online play and periodic entitlement verification. These are separate from processor or graphics compatibility, so check the specific title’s current instructions if you need to know the applicable sign-in or connectivity conditions.
In other words, there are two distinct questions: can the launcher meet its own baseline, and does the computer meet the selected game’s baseline? The launcher’s 2GB memory minimum and 1GB of launcher space do not replace a game requirement such as 8GB RAM and 150GB storage. Likewise, an installed launcher does not prove the game will launch or perform adequately.

Interpret the comparison without overpromising
If every listed minimum is met
Your specifications match Rockstar’s published baseline for that edition, but that does not guarantee a particular frame rate, graphics preset or smooth experience. Rockstar’s requirement pages do not promise identical performance across every PC configuration. Recommended specifications are a stronger reference tier, not another way to define the minimum.
If your PC meets the minimum but falls short of recommended, describe it accurately as meeting the stated minimum—not as meeting the recommended tier. The recommended rows provide a more demanding comparison point, such as 16GB dual-channel RAM and an RTX 3060 or RX 6600 XT for GTA V Enhanced. They still should not be converted into a guaranteed frame rate or preset because Rockstar’s listed requirements do not make that performance promise.

Mark the specific category that does not match. A graphics card below the listed minimum is a GPU shortfall; insufficient free disk space or the wrong stated drive type is a storage shortfall. Do not jump straight to buying hardware: first confirm the game edition and the exact model reported by Windows, then compare it with the corresponding official minimum. If a change is needed, base it on the actual shortfall rather than a general claim that a PC is old or slow.
A graphics-card upgrade is only a conditional option if the identified GPU is below the game’s minimum; a storage drive is a possible response if there is not enough space or the required drive type is missing. Recheck every relevant requirement before choosing an upgrade, since the built-in diagnostic is enough to identify the hardware and the issue may be in another category. A change that addresses storage does not resolve a CPU or GPU shortfall.
If your model is missing from Rockstar’s list
A model not appearing in the list is not automatically proven compatible by a higher number in its name or by comparison with a different brand’s product. Rockstar warns that unlisted specifications may not be supported. Treat that result as uncertain rather than as a guaranteed pass, and consult Rockstar’s current support information for the game before relying on it.
The published model lists are not a complete benchmark comparison between every possible PC component. They provide named hardware baselines; they do not establish that a particular unlisted CPU or GPU is equivalent, or that a PC will run at a given quality setting. If you cannot confidently match a specification, leave it as uncertain instead of turning a guess into a compatibility guarantee.
Quick checklist before installing

- Interpret a minimum-spec match as meeting the published baseline, not as a performance guarantee.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I check whether my PC is compatible with a Rockstar game?
Run dxdiag from Start > Run, note your Windows version, processor, memory and graphics information, then compare each item with the current Rockstar requirements for the exact game and PC edition. Check storage and account or internet requirements separately.
Best Value
- Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4
- Powered by GeForce RTX 5070 Ti
- Integrated with 16GB GDDR7 256bit memory interface
- PCIe 5.0
- WINDFORCE cooling system
Does meeting the minimum requirements mean the game will run smoothly?
No. Minimum requirements are Rockstar’s published baseline, not a guarantee of a particular frame rate, graphics preset or smooth experience. Recommended requirements are a higher reference tier.
Does the Rockstar Games Launcher requirement mean my game will run?
No. The launcher has its own baseline, and Rockstar says supported games need additional installation space and may have additional requirements. Compare your PC with the selected game’s requirements as well.
Can I count shared memory as dedicated video memory?
No. Integrated graphics may borrow shared system memory, which is not the same as dedicated VRAM. Compare the graphics device and video memory with the game’s own listed requirement.
What if my graphics card or processor is not listed?
Do not infer compatibility from a higher-looking model number or a comparison with another brand. Rockstar warns that unlisted specifications may not be supported, so treat the result as uncertain and consult the current support page.
Should I upgrade my PC before checking the requirements?
No. First identify the exact edition and the specific category that falls short. Consider a graphics-card or storage change only when the comparison shows that it addresses the actual GPU or storage shortfall; a change in one category does not resolve another.
The Bottom Line
Run dxdiag, identify the exact game and PC edition, and compare every listed minimum—including Windows version, CPU, RAM, GPU and VRAM, storage type and capacity, and sound where specified. Check the launcher and title-specific account or internet conditions separately. Treat a match as meeting Rockstar’s baseline, not as a guarantee of smooth play.
