For a Welsh beach or designated bathing site, open the Natural Resources Wales (NRW) bathing-water explorer and the exact site’s profile. Check its long-term classification, any current warning or closure, the available daily pollution-risk forecast and any storm-overflow alert. Then check recent rain and assess the water’s flow, depth, currents, weather, obstacles and entry and exit points. A clean-looking surface or a good historical classification cannot guarantee safe conditions today.
Start with the exact location, not a nearby status
Search the name of the beach, river stretch, lake or access point in the Natural Resources Wales bathing-water explorer. Open the individual site profile. A general river dashboard, an environmental-status map or a result for a nearby beach does not establish conditions at the place where you plan to enter.
An NRW profile can describe the beach and surrounding area, streams and rivers feeding the site, and pollution-management measures. Record the precise site name and check that the map pin, access point and waterbody match your plan. Conditions can differ substantially between two locations on the same river or coast.

- Confirm designation. Establish whether the exact site is a designated bathing water. Designated coastal sites and a small number of river sites are monitored under the bathing-water programme; most Welsh inland waters are not.
- Read the classification in context. Treat it as a multi-season summary of sampled bacterial indicators, not a real-time test or an all-hazards safety certificate.
- Check current information. Look for a site warning, temporary closure, daily pollution-risk forecast and storm-overflow alert. Follow the newest local-authority sign if it conflicts with an older webpage.
- Review recent weather. Heavy or prolonged rain can wash contaminants from roads, fields and urban areas into water and can trigger storm overflows. There is no universal official waiting period after rain, so use the current site information, rainfall intensity and your own risk judgment rather than an invented number of hours.
- Assess physical hazards separately. Check the forecast, tide where relevant, water level, flow, depth, currents, submerged objects, unstable or slippery banks, weirs, sluices, waterfalls, rapids and a safe way to get out.
- Decide whether the evidence is sufficient. If a warning is active, the water looks or smells abnormal, access is unsafe, or you cannot identify a safe exit, do not enter.
What a bathing-water classification means
NRW classifications combine bacterial-indicator samples collected over multiple seasons. They provide a long-term comparison of a designated site; they do not report today’s result, detect every contaminant or account for drowning hazards. A site can have a strong classification and still have a short-term pollution event, dangerous surf or an unexpectedly fast current.

For 2026, NRW lists 114 designated bathing waters in Wales. Each is scheduled for at least eight tests between 1 May and 30 September. Sampling frequency and designation do not mean that every other day, every river or every possible hazard is being measured.
| Figure or status | What it tells you | What it does not tell you |
|---|---|---|
| 2026: 114 designated bathing waters | The number of sites in the Welsh designated programme for that year. | That all Welsh waters are monitored or that every site is safe on a particular day. |
| 2025 results: 110 of 112 designated waters met required standards | 78 were classified Excellent, 26 Good and 6 Sufficient. | A real-time reading, a guarantee against a spill, or evidence about undesignated rivers and lakes. |
| 2025 results: 2 sites classified Poor | Those sites did not meet the required long-term standard for that reporting cycle. | A conclusion about an unlisted site or about today’s conditions at another beach. |
| At least 8 scheduled tests, 1 May–30 September | The planned minimum sampling schedule for each designated bathing water in 2026. | Continuous monitoring between samples. |
The 2025 classification figures are dated results for 112 sites, while the 2026 programme contains 114 designated waters. Do not merge those counts or present the 2025 categories as a current-day reading.
Find a current pollution forecast or warning
During the bathing season, NRW publishes daily pollution-risk forecasts for covered sites. A forecast predicts the likelihood that conditions will fail a pollution criterion; it is not confirmation that a sewage spill or other incident has happened. Coverage is not universal. An NRW article dated 30 July 2025 described forecast models at 16 designated sites. Swansea Bay predictions were supplied through a separate council model. Check the current site profile to see whether a forecast exists for your location rather than assuming that every designated beach has one.

A low-risk prediction does not remove the need to check signs, weather and physical conditions, and a high-risk prediction is a reason to postpone even if the water looks clear.
Check storm-overflow alerts and local signs
NRW says Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water and Hafren Dyfrdwy provide near-real-time alerts when storm overflows spill at designated bathing waters. Use the relevant water company’s information for the site and check signs at the access point. A sign can impose a temporary closure or advice that is newer than a saved webpage or a general app notification.

An overflow alert identifies a discharge event; it does not by itself describe the concentration of every contaminant at every point along the shore. Conversely, no alert is not proof that water is free of pollution, especially at an undesignated site with no bathing-water alert system.
How rain changes the risk
Heavy or sustained rain can carry animal waste, soil, road runoff and urban pollutants into streams, rivers and coastal water. It can also cause storm overflows to operate. Water quality may change quickly after a downpour and may vary at other times as well.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsOfficial Welsh guidance reviewed for this article does not set one universal post-rain waiting time. The sensible response is to check the current forecast, overflow information and local notices, consider how much rain fell and where the catchment drains, and postpone when uncertainty or warnings are significant. Do not turn a rule of thumb from another country into a Welsh guarantee.
At a river site, look upstream for tributaries, farmland, wastewater infrastructure and urban drains that could affect the reach you intend to use. A clear surface downstream does not prove that contamination has not entered upstream.
Why most Welsh rivers and lakes cannot be “cleared” by a dashboard
Most Welsh rivers, lakes and inland waters are not designated bathing waters. NRW and Public Health Wales explain that only some coastal locations and a small number of river sites are designated and monitored during the bathing season. Routine measurements at an undesignated river may be designed to assess ecological condition under Water Framework Directive requirements, not bathing-water quality.

The Welsh Government’s River Tawe statement of 2 September 2026 makes this distinction explicit: “Routine monitoring on the River Tawe is undertaken primarily to assess the environmental condition of the river under the Water Framework Directive Regulations, rather than bathing water quality.” A good ecological-status result, or the absence of a reported incident, therefore cannot certify that a particular swimming hole is suitable.
If no designated profile exists, combine every available local notice with a conservative physical and health assessment. If you cannot establish recent conditions, safe access and a safe exit, choose a monitored site or do not swim.
Assess physical danger independently of contamination
Water-quality information cannot tell you whether you will be swept away, struck by a submerged object or unable to climb out. Before entering, inspect the whole route from bank to water and back again.
- Flow and currents: Fast water, eddies, tidal channels and currents around headlands can exceed your ability even when the surface looks calm. Water accelerates near waterfalls, rapids, weirs and sluices.
- Depth and bottom: Depth can change abruptly. Assume there may be rocks, branches, glass, fishing equipment or other hidden objects. Never jump or dive into unfamiliar water.
- Weather and tide: Wind, swell, lightning, falling temperatures and a changing tide can turn an easy entry into a dangerous one. Check conditions before leaving and again at the water.
- Entry and exit: Identify a stable, non-slippery entry and at least one realistic exit before you get wet. A route that is easy to descend may be impossible to climb when cold or tired.
- Man-made structures: Keep away from the hydraulic pull and turbulence of weirs, sluices, culverts and dam outlets. Obey every warning sign, even if other people are in the water.
- Cold water: Sudden immersion can cause involuntary gasping and hyperventilation, increasing drowning risk. Enter slowly, control your breathing and leave before prolonged exposure causes hypothermia.
NRW advises knowing your limits, swimming with other people where possible or telling someone exactly where you are going and when you expect to return, and having a way to raise an alarm. A mobile phone may not have reception at a remote bank, so do not rely on it as your only rescue plan.

- Do not swallow the water, and keep splashes out of your mouth.
- Cover cuts and grazes with waterproof dressings before entering.
- Wash your hands before eating or drinking.
- Shower as soon as possible after the swim and wash swimwear.
- Stay out if you are recovering from diarrhoea or vomiting.
- If the water looks or smells bad, do not enter. This is a warning sign, not a test that can certify apparently clear water.
Public Health Wales advises medical advice if you develop diarrhoea, vomiting, stomach cramps or fever after swimming. Tell the clinician that you had contact with natural water and when the symptoms began.
Compare two possible locations without overvaluing a label
When choosing between beaches, river reaches or lakes, compare the same evidence for each location. A better historical classification does not override a current warning or dangerous conditions.
| Comparison question | Why it matters | What to record |
|---|---|---|
| Is the exact site designated? | Designation determines whether the bathing-water programme and related alerts apply. | Site name, map position and whether it is coastal, river or another inland water. |
| What is the classification and period? | It provides historical context based on sampled bacterial indicators. | Category, reporting year and number of sites covered by that result. |
| Is there a current warning, closure or forecast? | Short-term information can outweigh a long-term category. | Date, validity period, risk level and issuing authority. |
| Has it rained, or is an overflow alert active? | Runoff and discharges can change exposure risk quickly. | Recent rainfall, catchment conditions and any water-company alert. |
| Can you manage the physical conditions? | Water quality does not prevent drowning or injury. | Tide, flow, depth, currents, obstacles, structures and exit route. |
| What support is available? | Lifeguards, busy access points and reliable communications can improve response, but do not make unsafe water safe. | Patrol dates, emergency access, companions and an alarm plan. |
A practical pre-swim checklist
- Save the exact NRW site profile or write down its name so you do not confuse it with a nearby site.
- Read the classification year and understand that it is historical.
- Check the current pollution-risk forecast, if the site has one.
- Check the relevant storm-overflow information and every local sign or notice.
- Review recent rain, wind, tide and the forecast for the whole time you will be out.
- Walk the bank or beach and identify depth, flow, submerged hazards and a safe exit.
- Tell someone your location and return time, or go with a competent companion.
- Carry a way to raise an alarm, suitable clothing for cold water and any flotation aid appropriate to your ability.
- Postpone if information is missing, contradictory or alarming.
During the swim
Enter slowly rather than jumping in. Pause in shallow water to control your breathing and notice whether the current, temperature or bottom differs from what you expected. Stay within the area and depth you assessed, keep visual contact with your companion and leave if weather, water level, flow or your physical condition changes.
An open-water swimming tow float or other brightly coloured swim float can improve visibility and provide flotation for a swimmer who has already chosen an appropriate site. It does not measure water quality, prevent infection or make a dangerous or unsuitable location safe. Treat it as optional equipment, not a substitute for checking the site and conditions.
After the swim
Shower promptly, wash your hands before eating and clean any cuts that contacted the water. Launder swimwear and equipment. Monitor yourself for gastrointestinal or fever symptoms. If you become unwell, seek medical advice and mention the natural-water exposure; severe or rapidly worsening symptoms require urgent help.

Answers to common Wales-specific questions
Is this river safe to swim in?
Only a site-specific check can answer that, and many rivers have no bathing-water monitoring at all. Look for an NRW designated profile; if none exists, do not treat an environmental dashboard or a lack of incident reports as approval. Check local notices, recent rain and the river’s physical hazards, and use a monitored alternative when evidence is insufficient.
Is this beach safe for swimming today?
Check the exact NRW profile, current warning or closure, available daily forecast and storm-overflow alert on the day you intend to swim. Then assess tide, surf, weather, depth, currents and exits. The historical classification alone cannot answer a “today” question.
Can I swim after heavy rain?
Rain can increase runoff and trigger overflows, but Wales has no single official waiting interval that applies to every catchment. Check current forecasts and alerts, consider the intensity and duration of rain, and postpone when the site information or physical conditions are unfavorable.

First establish whether the exact reach is a designated bathing water in the NRW explorer. If it is not, understand that routine environmental monitoring may not assess bathing-water quality. Combine any local information with conservative health and physical-safety decisions.
Are sewage overflows affecting this beach?
Check the relevant near-real-time storm-overflow information from the water company identified for the designated site, plus NRW and local-authority notices. An alert indicates a discharge event; no alert is not a guarantee for an undesignated site.
The safest interpretation of official information
Use the sources in layers: the NRW explorer establishes whether the site is covered; the classification supplies long-term context; a current forecast, overflow alert or closure supplies short-term information; and your own inspection covers hazards that pollution monitoring cannot. If any layer indicates unacceptable risk, do not enter. Recheck the information immediately before the swim because counts, forecast coverage, warnings and alerts can change during the bathing season.
