A PDF can look polished and still lose information when an applicant tracking system (ATS) extracts its text. The problem is not the PDF extension by itself: image-only pages, complex layouts, or an unexpected reading order can prevent some parsers from recognizing or assigning details correctly. The available evidence does not establish that most AI resume builders produce failing PDFs, so the useful question is whether your particular export is readable and whether the application form captured it accurately.
What an ATS parser does—and what it does not prove
Resume parsing is the extraction of information from a resume into fields or a candidate record. Roche describes parsing as automatic extraction, storage, and analysis that can populate an application; Bullhorn describes extracting resume information into a candidate record. The resulting fields are worth checking after upload rather than assuming the parser copied everything correctly. Roche Careers Bullhorn
Extraction is only one part of an application process. Whether text is recovered, whether it is mapped into the right fields, how an employer searches or ranks candidates, and whether a recruiter considers an application are separate questions. A successful text check cannot certify the other steps.
Why a polished PDF can lose information
The page may be an image, not text
A scanned or photocopied page can show readable words while containing no selectable text. If the PDF has no text layer, a parser may have nothing to extract. Applicant Tracking Software recommends trying to highlight and copy text from the downloaded PDF: if that fails, the file is likely an image-only scan. If copying works, the document has text, but that quick test does not certify compatibility with every parser. Applicant Tracking Software

Text can be present but difficult to associate
A parser must do more than detect characters: it also has to infer which text belongs to contact details, work history, education, and other fields. Roche warns that tables, text boxes, logos, images, graphics, columns, headers and footers, uncommon section headings, important linked words, and less common fonts can cause some systems to misread, reorder, or drop information. In a two-column layout, for example, a system may read straight across rather than finish one column before moving to the next; header and footer content may be omitted. Roche Careers
This explains how a visually correct export can diverge from the record an employer sees: a builder may prioritize page design, while the parser needs a recoverable text layer and a structure it can interpret. The cited guidance establishes these as possible failure modes, not evidence that a majority of AI builders produce them.

PDF or DOCX: follow the employer’s requirement
The sources do not support a universal rule that one extension always parses better. Roche says DOCX is its more accurately parsed choice, while also noting that PDF better preserves intended formatting. Bullhorn lists both PDF and Word formats as supported. These are vendor- and employer-specific statements, not a controlled head-to-head test across ATS platforms.

Use the file type specified by the job portal. A supported extension is not a guarantee that every detail will be extracted or assigned to the correct field.

Check your exported resume before submitting
- Follow the portal’s file-type instruction. Submit the requested format rather than treating advice from one employer or vendor as a rule for every system.
- Test the final PDF’s text layer. Open the exported file and select and copy the name, contact information, a heading, and a work-history bullet. If text cannot be selected, treat that as a warning that the PDF may be image-only.
- Inspect the extracted order. Check that your name, contact details, headings, dates, employers, and bullets appear in a sensible sequence. A local PDF text-recovery check can help reveal ordering problems; it is a diagnostic, not validation by the employer’s ATS.
- Prefer a straightforward structure. Roche suggests one column, familiar headings such as “Education,” “Work Experience,” and “Technical Skills,” ordinary bullets, and familiar fonts. Keep important information in the document body rather than headers, footers, or graphics.
- Review the application fields after upload. Confirm that parsed information landed in the right places. Correct mistakes before submitting if the portal allows it.
Why a local PDF checker is not an ATS guarantee
ATSPrep’s PDF X-Ray recovers text from a PDF and compares the extracted content with source text. Its methodology says, “Import is best-effort.” The tool also states that it does not emulate proprietary parsing, ranking, or workflow configurations for systems such as Workday, Greenhouse, Lever, Taleo, iCIMS, Ashby, and SmartRecruiters. A useful result means the file’s text was recoverable in a sensible order under that test; it does not show how a particular employer’s system will map, search, or rank it. ATSPrep methodology

Bullhorn’s help page lists PDF, Microsoft Word (.doc and .docx), RTF, TXT, and HTML as supported formats. It says its updated parser supports image-based and scanned documents, while customers not yet on that updated parser may need manual data entry. The same page describes a Bullhorn upgrade to core parsing technology for ATS customers throughout Q1 and Q2 2026. Roche Careers cautions that “Resume parsing results can vary based on resume format and order of words.” The safest practical approach is therefore to obey the employer’s file instructions and inspect the application fields, rather than treating a file extension or a third-party checker result as a universal pass.
