First identify the ransomware, then verify that a decryptor comes from the official project or named maker and explicitly supports your family and version. No More Ransom’s Crypto Sheriff can help identify some infections and check for an available solution, but a listing is not a promise that files can be recovered. Meanwhile, isolate affected systems, preserve evidence, and consult a qualified incident responder or law enforcement before changing systems or deciding whether to pay.
What “legitimate” means for a decryptor
Check two separate things: provenance and compatibility. Provenance means the download is hosted by the real project or the decryptor’s named maker—not a lookalike page, unsolicited message, or search advertisement. Compatibility means the tool’s documented scope covers the ransomware family and version that encrypted your files.
There is no universal certification that proves every decryptor is legitimate. A catalog entry or an authentic download can establish where a tool came from, but neither guarantees it will work on a particular infection.
Contain the incident before investigating
If this is an organizational incident, follow the incident-response plan and bring in your security team or a qualified responder. CISA’s U.S.-focused #StopRansomware Guide advises isolating affected systems and preserving relevant evidence. Depending on the incident, that can include system images, memory captures, logs, ransom notes, and precursor malware samples. Ask responders before making changes that could destroy evidence.

- Slim durable design to help take your important files with you
- Vast capacities up to 6TB[1] to store your photos, videos, music, important documents and more
- Back up smarter with included device management software[2] with defense against ransomware

Avoid reconnecting affected systems in ways that could expose clean systems to reinfection. Keep encrypted originals intact while assessing recovery options.
Identify the ransomware family and variant
Use Crypto Sheriff as a lead
No More Ransom’s Crypto Sheriff checks submitted information to see whether it can identify the ransomware and whether a solution is available. It may ask for encrypted files (up to 1 MB each), the ransom note or details from it, and identifiers in the demand, such as an email address, website, onion address, or bitcoin address.

Review No More Ransom’s data-provisioning terms and consider what information you are comfortable submitting. If you cannot upload samples or the result is inconclusive, ask a trusted responder or law-enforcement contact to help identify the family. Do not assume a ransom note alone proves which variant is involved.

Record the exact identification
Keep the family and version or variant information returned by a checker or responder, along with the ransom note and relevant indicators. A broad family name may not be enough: decryptors can be limited to particular versions, and newer versions may not be supported.

Find the tool through an official source
Start with No More Ransom’s decryptor directory, which organizes tools by ransomware family and names their makers. You can also check the official Kaspersky No Ransom resource and Emsisoft decryptor library. These are live catalogs; coverage can change.
- Navigate to the project or maker site yourself and search for the identified family or variant.
- Check that the listed maker and download destination match the tool’s official entry.
- Do not treat a matching name in a third-party download page, email, or advertisement as proof of authenticity.
- If the source or maker is unclear, do not run the file; ask a responder or law-enforcement contact to assess it.
Check whether the tool fits your infection
Before running a candidate, read the maker’s current instructions and limitations. Emsisoft warns that decryptors may work only with specific ransomware versions and may not support versions released after the tool was created. Ask a trusted responder to help assess whether the stated scope matches your identification.

- Family and version: Does the tool explicitly cover the family and, where stated, the particular variant or version?
- Scope and limits: What files or circumstances does the maker say it supports, and what limitations apply?
- Instructions: What preparation or recovery steps does the maker require?
- Corroboration: Can an incident responder or law-enforcement contact confirm that this is a reasonable tool to consider?
A tool can be genuine and still be the wrong tool for your files. Even a correct match does not guarantee successful recovery.
Use a controlled recovery process
Follow the maker’s instructions and your incident-response plan. Preserve encrypted originals and evidence, and avoid changes that could interfere with investigation or recovery. CISA recommends restoring from offline, encrypted backups as part of recovery; do not reconnect systems in a way that risks reinfecting clean systems.
CISA advises consulting federal law enforcement about possible decryptors, including tools released after researchers discover flaws in some ransomware variants. Its guidance is U.S.-oriented; readers elsewhere should contact the appropriate national or local authorities.
Does paying guarantee your files will come back?
No. CISA and MS-ISAC state that payment does not ensure data will be decrypted, systems or data will no longer be compromised, or stolen data will not be leaked. CISA’s authoring organizations do not recommend paying ransom. Contact law enforcement and assess available recovery options before making a decision.
