The reliable way to check a rain jacket is to combine its construction, condition, and behavior in rain. Confirm that the specific model is sold as waterproof; look for a membrane or coating and sealed seams; inspect zippers, hood, cuffs, and fabric for damage; then observe it in light rain. Beading tests the outer fabric’s durable water repellent (DWR), not the waterproof barrier itself. If the face fabric wets out but the inside stays dry, the jacket may still be waterproof and simply need care.
No single home check proves the performance of a finished garment under every storm. A jacket can use waterproof fabric yet leak through a worn seam, zipper, pocket, tear, or detached seam tape. Use the sequence below to separate worn surface repellency from a genuine leak.
What “waterproof” means in a finished jacket
A rain jacket normally keeps water out through two related but different systems:

- Durable water repellent (DWR): a treatment on the outside face fabric that makes droplets bead and roll away instead of soaking into the textile.
DWR improves comfort and helps the shell remain breathable, but it is not the waterproof barrier. GORE-TEX explains that its membrane can remain waterproof after the outer layer saturates, although the garment may feel “cold and clammy” when that happens. See the GORE-TEX DWR care guidance.

Patagonia likewise notes that a saturated outer fabric can reduce breathability and comfort even when water is not passing through the membrane, as described in its H₂No Performance Standard. Therefore, a jacket that no longer beads water is not automatically a jacket with a failed waterproof layer.
Step 1: Verify the exact garment’s claim
Read the sewn-in label
Find the care and materials labels inside the jacket. Look for wording such as “waterproof,” “waterproof membrane,” “coated,” or a named waterproof construction. “Water resistant,” “water repellent,” and “showerproof” describe lower or less specific levels of protection; do not treat them as proof that the garment is intended for prolonged rain.
Check the maker’s page for the exact model
Search the model name, season, and product code rather than relying on a brand name or a photograph. Confirm whether the listed construction is waterproof and whether the seams are fully taped, critically taped, or left partially unsealed. Construction varies among models from the same maker. A product page that only describes a DWR finish does not establish that the jacket has a waterproof membrane or coating.

Step 2: Inspect the whole garment, inside and out
Do this in bright light with the jacket clean and completely dry. Patagonia’s testing description treats the fabric and the finished design separately: seams, tapes, trims, and zipper details all affect whether the garment works in practice.
Shell fabric
- Hold the shell up to light and look for pinholes, needle marks, cuts, and abrasion-through.
- Flex high-wear areas such as shoulders, elbows, cuffs, seat, and pack-contact zones. Look for peeling, bubbling, cracking, or a laminate separating from the face fabric.
- Check whether the inside coating is flaking or sticky. Those are signs of material degradation, not merely tired DWR.
Seam tape and stitching
- Run your fingers along the inside of major seams. Tape should lie flat and remain bonded.
- Look for lifted edges, gaps, wrinkles that expose stitching, missing sections, or adhesive residue.
- Pay special attention to hood joins, shoulder seams, armholes, side seams, and the junctions around pockets.
A waterproof fabric can still admit water where seam tape has detached or where needle holes are no longer sealed.
Zippers, pockets, and other closures
- Inspect the main zipper for damaged teeth, a split coil, worn slider, or a flap that no longer covers the opening.
- Check pocket zippers and their garages or storm flaps. A pocket opening can be the leak even when the body fabric is sound.
- Examine snaps, hook-and-loop tabs, and drawcord exits for gaps or missing parts.
Hood, cuffs, and hem
- Pull the hood adjustment and inspect around the cord channels for holes.
- Close the cuffs tightly enough to seal around your wrists without leaving a large opening.
- Check the hem drawcord, elastic, and any interface with a rain pant or harness. Water can enter through an unsealed opening rather than through the shell.
Step 3: Use beading as a DWR check
Observe droplets in light rain
Wear or hang the jacket in gentle rain and watch the shoulders, upper sleeves, hood, and back. Healthy DWR makes drops form rounded beads and roll away when the fabric is tilted or shaken. If the surface darkens and absorbs water, the DWR is worn or contaminated.

Persistent wetting of the face fabric does not prove that water has crossed the membrane. It tells you that the surface is no longer repelling water effectively. A wet face can make the garment feel colder and reduce breathability while the barrier remains intact.

Do not use a household spray bottle, bathtub dunk, or poured water as a pass/fail laboratory test. Those methods do not reproduce pressure, rain duration, movement, or the construction details that determine real performance.
Step 4: Check for an actual leak in ordinary rain
If you need to know whether water reaches the inside, use a practical wear test. It is useful for locating a problem but is not a validated laboratory method and cannot always distinguish rain from condensation.
- Choose steady, ordinary rain rather than a downpour with strong wind. Wear a clean, thin, dry base layer so dampness is easy to see.
- Close the main zipper, pockets, cuffs, hood, and hem as you normally would. Note the exposure time and whether you are carrying a pack or leaning against a wet surface.
- After approximately 15 to 30 minutes of normal movement, check the base layer and the jacket’s inside. The duration is an observation window, not an industry pass/fail threshold.
- Map every damp spot. A line that follows a seam, zipper, pocket edge, cuff, or tear points to construction or damage. Broad, evenly distributed dampness without a corresponding outside entry point may be perspiration or condensation.
- Repeat in a different rain session if the result is ambiguous. Compare the location of wetness rather than judging the entire jacket from one clammy feeling.
Separate rain from condensation
Hard exercise, warm humid air, and a cool waterproof shell can produce interior moisture even when no rain has entered. Sweat usually appears on high-heat areas and may be diffuse; a leak often begins at a recognizable seam, closure, damaged patch, or low point where water collects. This distinction is practical, not definitive: the sources available do not provide a home test that identifies every leak versus every case of condensation.

Step 5: Restore DWR, then retest
Follow the garment’s own care label
Remove dirt and oils using the detergent, cycle, temperature, and drying method specified for that jacket. Ordinary household detergents, fabric softener, bleach, or an overly hot dryer can harm some technical fabrics. The label for your garment takes priority over generic advice.

GORE-TEX-specific guidance
For GORE-TEX garments, the care guidance says washing and drying with heat can reactivate DWR. If the face still wets out after correct washing and drying, it describes using either a pump-spray or wash-in DWR treatment according to that product’s instructions. Do not transfer those settings or products automatically to another maker’s jacket; use that jacket’s label first. Details are in the GORE-TEX care instructions.
Retest after care
Once the jacket is clean and fully dry, repeat the light-rain beading check. If droplets bead again and the inside remains dry, the problem was likely surface repellency or contamination rather than a failed barrier. DWR treatment cannot close a hole, reconnect seam tape, repair a zipper, or rebuild a delaminated coating.
How to interpret hydrostatic-head and “K” ratings
Hydrostatic head is a laboratory measure of how much water pressure a fabric resists before water penetrates. It is commonly displayed as a millimeter value or a “K” rating. The figure can provide context when the maker discloses the test method, sample, and conditions.
It is not a universal definition of a waterproof jacket. REI explains in How Rain Gear Works that rainwear brands do not share one agreed test standard or a single threshold that makes a jacket “fully waterproof.” A fabric result also does not measure the finished garment’s seams, zippers, hood, cuffs, wear, or care history.

When comparing numbers, ask:
- Were both fabrics tested with the same method and revision?
- Was the number measured on new material, after washing, or after abrasion?
- Does the figure describe fabric only or the assembled garment?
- Are seam construction and closure protection disclosed separately?
If those answers are missing, treat the ratings as non-equivalent context rather than a league table. The Rab explanation of hydrostatic head is useful for understanding the measurement, while REI’s guidance explains why it should not be used alone to declare one finished jacket better.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical comparison framework for two jackets
| Comparison axis | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Waterproof construction | Exact membrane or coating and the maker’s stated test method | Shows what barrier the garment uses; numbers are comparable only when methods align. |
| Seams and closures | Fully or critically taped seams, zipper design, pocket protection, hood and cuff adjustments | Weak points in the finished design can leak even when the fabric is waterproof. |
| Current condition | Holes, abrasion, peeling laminate, loose tape, damaged teeth, and failed elastic | Real-world performance depends on the jacket you have now, not a new sample. |
| DWR state | Whether water beads after cleaning and drying | Indicates surface repellency and comfort; it does not independently prove membrane integrity. |
| Intended exposure | Short urban showers, sustained rain, wind-driven rain, pack use, and activity level | Comfort, condensation, and closure design can matter as much as a fabric rating. |
Symptoms, likely causes, and next actions
| What you observe | Most likely interpretation | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Droplets soak into the outside, but the inside is dry | DWR is worn or contaminated; the barrier may still work | Clean, dry, and retest according to the label; apply compatible DWR only if the maker allows it. |
| One narrow wet line follows a seam | Loose or damaged seam tape, stitching, or seam construction | Mark the location and ask the maker or an authorized repair service for an assessment. |
| Water appears around a zipper or pocket | Closure, flap, garage, or zipper damage | Inspect alignment and teeth; stop relying on the jacket in severe rain until repaired. |
| A small isolated wet spot matches a snag or pinhole | Physical shell damage | Have the damage repaired with a method compatible with the fabric and coating. |
| Inside feels damp everywhere after hard exercise | Condensation or sweat is possible; rain entry is not established | Repeat the test at lower exertion and map moisture against external seams and openings. |
| Film is peeling, bubbling, cracking, or sticky | Laminate or coating deterioration | Contact the maker or an authorized repair center; DWR treatment will not reverse delamination. |
When to seek repair or replace the jacket
Contact the manufacturer or an authorized gear-repair service when water continues to enter through a specific seam, closure, tear, or damaged fabric after correct cleaning and drying. GORE-TEX’s FAQ recommends repair assessment for damaged gear. Provide the model, approximate age, care history, photographs of the outside and inside, and the exact leak location.
Repair is a reasonable first step for a localized seam, zipper, or small fabric problem. Replacement becomes more practical when the waterproof layer is broadly delaminating, seam tape is failing in many areas, or the shell has extensive abrasion. A new DWR product cannot restore a physically failed barrier.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCommon checking mistakes
- Judging only by beading: Beads show DWR performance, not complete waterproofness.
- Assuming a wet face means a leak: The membrane can remain waterproof after the outer layer saturates.
- Testing fabric but ignoring construction: Seams, trims, zippers, hood, cuffs, and pocket garages are part of the waterproof system.
- Treating a hydrostatic-head number as a universal score: Methods and thresholds are not standardized across brands.
- Applying generic washing instructions: Care labels differ; unsuitable detergent or heat can damage technical materials.
- Trying to seal a hole with DWR: Repellent treatments affect the surface and do not mend tears, pinholes, seam tape, or delamination.
- Calling all interior moisture rain: Sweat and condensation can mimic a leak, especially during strenuous activity.
Questions to answer before you trust the jacket in a storm
- Does the exact model claim waterproof construction, rather than only water resistance?
- Are the seams, zipper areas, hood, cuffs, and hem intact and properly adjustable?
- Does the fabric show damage, peeling, bubbling, or detached tape?
- After label-approved cleaning and drying, does the face repel water or merely absorb it?
- During ordinary rain, can you identify a repeatable entry point separate from sweat or condensation?
If the answers are yes, intact, no, restored or acceptable, and no repeatable entry point, the jacket is behaving consistently with a functioning waterproof system. If a localized leak remains, stop treating the garment as stormproof until it has been assessed or repaired.
