On a PS5, open Settings > System > System Software > Console Information and record the exact system software version. That number is only the starting point: jailbreak eligibility depends on the particular exploit method, its documented firmware range, your console configuration and any media requirements. If current method-specific documentation does not clearly cover all of those details, treat eligibility as unconfirmed and do not proceed.
What the version check can—and cannot—tell you
The Console Information screen gives you the installed system software version. Sony also uses that screen to show whether the console is “Up to date” when the latest official software is installed. The version is useful for matching a documented exploit, but it is not a universal jailbreak test.
Different projects can rely on different vulnerabilities, entry points, exploit chains, console models or physical media. A firmware number that appears in a discussion about one method may be irrelevant to another. Compatibility can also change as projects are updated and as Sony releases new system software. The safe conclusion is therefore conditional: your PS5 may be eligible for a named method only when that method’s current documentation explicitly covers your exact version and configuration.
How to find your installed PS5 system software version
- Turn on the PS5 and sign in far enough to reach the home screen.
- Open Settings, the gear icon at the upper-right of the home screen.
- Select System.
- Choose System Software.
- Open Console Information.
- Write down the complete value shown for System Software. Do not shorten it to a major number such as “7” or “13”; record every digit and decimal point.
Remain on this screen long enough to distinguish the installed version from any separate status text. “Up to date” describes Sony’s update status; it does not indicate jailbreak support or incompatibility. Photographing or transcribing the screen can prevent a later mix-up between two consoles or between installed software and a version mentioned in an article.

Record the configuration as well as the version
Version matching is only one part of the check. Note whether the console is a standard PS5 or PS5 Digital Edition, its model identifier if the documentation requests one, and whether the method requires a disc, USB device or another specific medium. The available project and reporting material does not establish one complete model-and-media matrix, so do not assume that a method working on one configuration works on every PS5.
Why a firmware number alone does not prove eligibility
Jailbreaks are method-specific
“PS5 jailbreak” is a broad label, not the name of a single universal procedure. A project may combine a browser or application entry point with a kernel exploit, payload loader and other components. Another project may use a different chain and support a different set of releases. A headline that says a jailbreak works on a certain firmware should always be read as a claim about the named method, not about every method.
Support ranges are not permanent
Support can change when a project publishes a new release or when Sony changes its software. A page that was accurate months ago may omit a later version, describe an older release or no longer reflect the required entry point. Look for the date and version of the documentation, and treat undated summaries as leads to verify rather than as proof.
Configuration and media dependencies can invalidate a match
Even if your firmware appears in a method’s range, the method may require a particular console model, browser state, application version, disc or other physical condition. If the documentation does not state whether your configuration is supported, the result is not confirmed. Do not fill an unstated requirement with an assumption based on someone else’s setup.

How to evaluate compatibility documentation
- Name the exact method. Record the project or exploit name and the specific release or instructions you are considering. “Any PS5 jailbreak” is not precise enough to test.
- Find the project’s current documentation. Prefer the project repository or release notes maintained by its contributors. Read the instructions and compatibility notes together; a release title alone may not list every dependency.
- Match the complete firmware value. Compare the number from Console Information character by character with the documented range. Do not infer that a nearby version is included.
- Check model and media conditions. Look for requirements involving the PS5 model, disc drive, USB media, network state or another entry-point condition. If a requirement is missing, mark it as unknown rather than assuming it is unnecessary.
- Check the documentation date. Record when the page or release was published or updated. A dated report can describe the situation at that time without guaranteeing that it remains current.
- Look for an explicit result. “Supported” should refer to your exact version and configuration. Wording such as “may work,” “being tested” or “reported by users” is not the same as documented support.
What the available compatibility evidence actually establishes
The etaHEN repository is a primary project source for that software and its releases, but the available material does not provide a complete compatibility table covering every PS5 firmware, exploit chain, model and media requirement. It can help you identify a project’s own documentation; it cannot by itself establish universal support.
Tom’s Hardware reported on September 30, 2026 that the Relapse jailbreak supported PS5 firmware 7.00 through 13.60 at the time of that report. That range belongs specifically to Relapse and to the situation described on that date. The report also noted that firmware requirements were changing quickly. It should not be generalized to other jailbreak methods or treated as a permanent promise for every console.
The available evidence does not establish a complete, current method-by-method matrix with model and disc requirements. If a source does not clearly document your version and configuration, the technically accurate status is unconfirmed, not supported and not disproved.

Legal and account consequences to review first
Checking a version is a normal console-information task. Attempting to bypass security, install unauthorized software or alter the hardware is a separate activity with legal, contractual and service implications. Review the terms that apply in your country before making any change.

Sony’s US software agreement
Sony Interactive Entertainment’s US PlayStation 5 System Software Licence Agreement, shown as version 1.12 in the cited material, prohibits several forms of modification. It states: “You may not (i) use any unauthorized, illegal, counterfeit or modified hardware or software with System Software; (ii) use tools to bypass, disable or circumvent any PS5 system encryption, security or authentication mechanism; (iii) reinstall earlier versions of the System Software ("downgrading");”
The same US agreement says Sony may take actions such as disabling some or all software or online or offline console use, ending access to PlayStation services, or denying warranty, repair or other services if Sony determines that the agreement was violated. Those are terms of the cited US agreement, not a guarantee that a particular action will occur in every case. They also are not a substitute for legal advice in another country.
The US hardware warranty
The US PS5 warranty excludes, among other things, certain damage involving unlicensed peripherals, modification without written permission, and service or opening performed by anyone other than Sony or an authorized provider. It also says Sony may void the warranty if it reasonably believes the console was used in violation of a separate software agreement. Warranty language and consumer protections vary by region, so read the warranty supplied with your console rather than assuming the US terms apply to you.

Sony’s UK update instructions caution against update data from sources or methods other than those it describes. The guidance says an altered console or unofficial update method might operate improperly, fail to install official updates, and affect warranty or repair-service eligibility. This is UK guidance; it should not be presented as universal legal advice, but it illustrates why an unofficial alteration can create support problems even when the console still powers on.

A cautious decision process before any modification
- Capture the baseline. Record the complete version from Settings > System > System Software > Console Information, the date you recorded it and the console configuration.
- Identify the method and release. Write down the exact project name, release or guide. Reject pages that discuss several methods without saying which range belongs to which method.
- Verify the range in current project documentation. Confirm that the exact firmware is listed as supported, not merely adjacent to a listed value.
- Verify dependencies. Check every stated model, disc, USB, network and entry-point condition. If one is not documented, label eligibility unconfirmed.
- Check the source date. A dated article, including the September 30, 2026 Relapse report, describes a point in time. Recheck the project’s current release notes before relying on it.
- Read local terms. Review the PlayStation software agreement, hardware warranty and support guidance for your region. Pay particular attention to rules about circumvention, modified software, unauthorized peripherals, opening the console and downgrading.
- Decide whether the uncertainty is acceptable. If any required match is missing, stop at the information-gathering stage. Do not treat an encouraging video, comment or headline as confirmation.
- Keep official recovery options in mind. Before making an alteration, understand how official updates and repair support could be affected. Do not use unofficial update files or attempt to reinstall an earlier system version.
How to classify the result
Documented match
Use this label only when current documentation for the named method explicitly includes your complete firmware version and states the relevant model and media conditions. Even then, “documented match” means the documentation claims compatibility; it does not remove contractual, warranty or reliability risks.
Outside the documented range
If your exact version is newer or older than the method’s published range, classify it as not supported by that documentation. Do not try to make it fit by rounding the number, relying on a different method’s range or downgrading. The US agreement cited above expressly restricts reinstalling earlier system software.
Unconfirmed
Use “unconfirmed” when the project has no clear statement, the documentation is outdated, the model or media requirement is missing, or sources disagree. This is the correct result for many real-world checks because no complete universal matrix is established by the available evidence.
Conflicting reports
Give priority to the named project’s current documentation for the specific release, then use dated reporting to understand context. Do not combine the highest firmware number from one method with the exploit chain or model requirements of another. If the conflict remains, stop and treat the console as unconfirmed.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Using only the major version: “13” is not the same record as a complete 13.xx value. Copy every digit from Console Information.
- Assuming “up to date” means exploitable: Sony’s status message concerns official updates, not jailbreak eligibility.
- Mixing methods: A Relapse range cannot be transferred to etaHEN or another project without that project’s own statement.
- Relying on an old list: Requirements can change quickly. Check the publication or release date and then verify current documentation.
- Ignoring configuration: Firmware support may not answer whether a particular model or disc setup works.
- Treating a report as a guarantee: Journalism can accurately describe a dated claim while still being unable to cover future releases or every hardware variant.
- Attempting a downgrade: Do not reinstall earlier system software to reach a listed range; the cited US licence agreement prohibits downgrading.
- Overlooking service consequences: Unauthorized modifications, peripherals or repair work can affect warranty and support eligibility under the terms cited above.
When you should stop the check
Stop before making any change if you cannot identify a current method-specific document, cannot match the exact firmware, cannot determine whether your model and media meet the requirements, or are unwilling to accept the applicable legal, warranty and service risks. A version check that ends with “unconfirmed” is a useful result: it prevents you from treating incomplete evidence as permission to proceed.
Practical record to keep
For your own reference, retain a short record containing the full Console Information version, console model, date checked, method and release considered, documented firmware range, model or media requirements, source publication date and the regional Sony terms you reviewed. This prevents accidental mixing of information from different methods and makes it clear which facts were known at the time of your decision.
Bottom line
Check Settings > System > System Software > Console Information, but do not stop there. A PS5 firmware number never proves jailbreak eligibility by itself. Match the exact version and configuration to current documentation for one named method, account for the dated and incomplete nature of public compatibility claims, and review your region’s software agreement and warranty before attempting any modification. If the match is not explicit, leave the status as unconfirmed and keep the console unchanged.
