Short answer: a normal PS5 cannot play PS2-format software from a disc. A recently reported homebrew route, PS5SX2, is a PCSX2 port that runs on a jailbroken PS5 and has been reported to read physical PS2 DVD games. The same report says PS2 CD games are not supported through this disc method. Even with a compatible DVD, successful booting is not guaranteed because title and firmware compatibility are still being developed.
Use the checks below before inserting a disc: confirm that the console is running the required jailbroken setup, identify whether the game is a DVD or CD, verify your model and firmware against PS5SX2’s current compatibility information, and look for title-specific reports. This is emulation through homebrew, not Sony-supported or native PS2 playback.
What “modded PS5” means for PS2 discs
“Modded PS5” is too broad to answer the question by itself. Sony’s standard PS5 software does not play PS2-format software from a disc. The PS5 CFI-21XX instruction manual lists PS2-format software among the disc formats that cannot be played by the ordinary system.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe reported exception is a specific homebrew configuration: PS5SX2, described by its developer as a PCSX2 port that runs as a native application on a jailbroken PS5. The application emulates PS2 hardware; it does not add official PS2 support to the PS5 operating system. A disc that works through this route is therefore being read by the homebrew emulator, not by a Sony-provided backward-compatibility layer.

Standard PS5
If the console has not been jailbroken and is using the regular Sony software, stop the check here: a PS2 game disc will not be playable. Buying a PS2 disc does not change that limitation, and a PS2 DVD should not be expected to launch from the PS5 home screen.
Jailbroken PS5 with PS5SX2
The reported disc feature applies only when PS5SX2 and its supporting components are installed on a compatible jailbroken console. The project documentation lists a jailbroken PS5, a PS5SX2 helper and related components, your own PS2 BIOS dump, and your own game materials as prerequisites. It also maintains a compatibility list for particular console models and firmware versions. Check that list for the exact combination you have; “jailbroken” alone does not establish compatibility.
First check: is the game a DVD or a CD?
The disc type is the most important physical-media check. A Tom’s Hardware report published October 10, 2026 says PS5SX2’s physical-disc route reads PS2 DVD games but does not support PS2 CD games. Treat this as the project’s current reported behavior, not as a permanent specification or a Sony guarantee. The developer repository does not independently confirm the report’s explanation that the distinction is caused by a drive limitation.

How to identify the format
- Check the original case, disc label, or publisher documentation for the media format. Look specifically for a DVD or CD designation rather than relying on the game’s title alone.
- If the packaging and disc disagree or provide no format information, look up the exact release and region in reliable game documentation before attempting setup. A title name is not enough because different releases can use different media.
- Record the exact edition, disc number, and region information for your own troubleshooting notes. Do not assume that a DVD edition and a CD edition of a similarly named game behave the same way.
A DVD label only passes the media-format check. It does not prove that the title boots, that every mode works, or that the current PS5SX2 build supports the game. A CD-format game currently fails this particular direct-disc check even if the console is otherwise configured correctly.
Second check: does your PS5 meet PS5SX2’s requirements?
Use the project’s current documentation at the PS5SX2 repository as the authority for setup prerequisites and compatibility. Requirements can change as the homebrew project evolves, so do not rely on an old tutorial or a compatibility claim made for another firmware.
| Check | What must be true | What failure means |
|---|---|---|
| Console state | The PS5 is running a jailbreak that the current PS5SX2 release supports. | A standard console cannot use this route; an unsupported jailbreak may not launch the application reliably. |
| Model and firmware | Your exact model and firmware appear in the project’s current tested or compatible information. | Do not infer support from another model or firmware. Wait for a documented match or use a different route. |
| PS5SX2 components | The PS5SX2 application, helper, and supporting components required by the project are installed as documented. | A missing helper or mismatched component can prevent the emulator from starting or from accessing a disc. |
| BIOS | You have a BIOS dump made from a PS2 you own, in the format and location the emulator expects. | The emulator may refuse to boot games or show a BIOS-related error. |
| Game materials | You own and have access to the game disc or a personally dumped game image. | PS5SX2 does not supply commercial games for you. |
The repository warns that compatibility work is ongoing. A model appearing on a list means the project has tested or targeted that configuration; it is not a promise that every game or every feature works on it.

Third check: is the individual title known to work?
PS5SX2’s developer says the project is still working toward broad compatibility across the PS2 library and asks users to provide logs and feedback. Consequently, the strongest evidence is a current report for the same title, disc format, PS5 model, firmware, and PS5SX2 build. A generic statement that “PS2 DVDs work” is weaker than a title-specific result.

Use a confidence scale
- Documented working: the project or users report the exact title and a matching setup, ideally with a recent build and a log.
- Partially tested: the game starts but has known graphical, audio, controller, loading, or gameplay faults.
- Unverified: the disc is a supported DVD format, but no matching title report exists.
- Known problematic: current reports identify a boot failure or an issue that prevents practical play.
Use “unverified” as the default for a DVD title without evidence. Do not convert the absence of a report into a claim that the game is incompatible, and do not treat a successful menu boot as proof that the complete game is playable.
Step-by-step: check your disc before trying to play it
- Write down the setup. Record the PS5 model, installed firmware, jailbreak method or environment, PS5SX2 version, and the exact game edition. These details are needed when comparing compatibility reports or submitting a bug report.
- Confirm the console is not a standard installation. If the PS5 is running only Sony’s normal system software, PS2 disc playback is unavailable. Do not troubleshoot the disc until the homebrew prerequisite is satisfied.
- Open the current PS5SX2 documentation. Verify that your model and firmware are listed in the project’s compatibility information. If the list is silent about your combination, classify it as unverified rather than assuming support.
- Install only the components the project specifies. Follow the repository’s current instructions for PS5SX2, its helper, and supporting files. A guide written for an earlier build may use obsolete paths or components.
- Prepare your own BIOS dump. PS5SX2 requires a PS2 BIOS supplied by the user. PCSX2’s FAQ likewise explains that a PS2 BIOS dump is required and discusses using original games from disc or from dumped images.
- Identify the disc medium. Confirm that the exact disc is a PS2 DVD, not a PS2 CD. Under the October 10, 2026 report, a CD is outside the currently reported direct-disc capability.
- Check title-specific information. Search the project’s current issue, compatibility, or feedback information for your title and matching setup. Note the build number and any required workaround exactly as documented.
- Start with conservative expectations. Launch the emulator and insert or select the disc according to the current project instructions. A failure at this stage may indicate an unsupported title, firmware mismatch, disc condition, or an emulator bug rather than a wrong media classification.
- Record the result. Note whether the disc is detected, whether the game reaches its boot screen, and where any failure occurs. Include the model, firmware, PS5SX2 build, title edition, and relevant log when reporting the problem to the project.
How the possible routes compare
| Route | Media or software | What is established | Confidence and limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard PS5 | PS2 disc | Sony’s manual says PS2-format software cannot be played from disc. | Not available through the ordinary PS5 system. |
| Jailbroken PS5 running PS5SX2 | Physical PS2 DVD | Reported by Tom’s Hardware on October 10, 2026 as working through the homebrew emulator. | Emerging feature; title, firmware, hardware, and build compatibility vary. |
| Jailbroken PS5 running PS5SX2 | Physical PS2 CD | The same report says CD-format games are not supported through the disc route. | Current observation, not a permanent guarantee; the repository does not confirm the reported hardware explanation. |
| PS5SX2 or PCSX2-style file loading | ISO, CHD, CSO, or ZSO game image | PS5SX2 documents these game-file formats; PCSX2 documents original discs or dumped ISO/CSO files plus a BIOS dump. | Requires a correctly dumped image and emulator support. It is not the same as direct physical-disc access. |
| Any route | Specific title | A DVD label or file format alone does not establish that the game works. | Use matching title, model, firmware, and build reports where available. |
If a PS2 DVD does not work
The PS5 says the disc is unsupported
First determine which software environment produced the message. On the ordinary PS5 interface, the result is expected because Sony does not support PS2-format discs. If you launched PS5SX2 and the emulator still cannot access the disc, check that the application is running correctly and that your model and firmware match the project’s current list.

The disc is detected but the game does not boot
Verify the BIOS path and file, then check the title’s reports. A game can pass the DVD check yet fail because of an emulator bug, an untested title, a firmware mismatch, or a damaged disc. Avoid changing several settings at once; record the original configuration so you can identify which change affected the result.
The game reaches a menu but has serious faults
Partial compatibility is common in an actively developed emulator. Test a short, repeatable sequence such as loading a save or entering a known menu, and document graphical, audio, input, or crash symptoms. “Boots” should not be reported as “fully playable” unless the project’s evidence supports that conclusion.
A PS2 CD fails immediately
Under the current reported behavior, this is an expected limitation of the physical-disc route. Rechecking the jailbreak or BIOS will not turn a CD into a supported DVD. If you have a lawful personal dump and the project supports the relevant file format, a file-based route may be worth investigating separately.

An image works but the physical disc does not
This result separates game compatibility from the direct-disc path. The image may be readable while the physical-drive implementation remains limited, or the disc may have read errors. Keep the two results distinct when reporting them; success with an ISO does not prove that the original disc route works.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Using a game image instead of the physical disc
The PS5SX2 documentation lists ISO, CHD, CSO, and ZSO game files. PCSX2’s FAQ describes using original games from a disc or dumping them as ISO/CSO and states that a PS2 BIOS dump is required. A file-based test can therefore answer a different question: whether the emulator can run a correctly prepared image of the game, rather than whether it can read that particular optical disc.
Keep the distinction clear:
- A physical-disc test exercises the PS5 drive, the homebrew disc-access code, the medium type, and the emulator.
- A file-based test exercises the image format, storage access, BIOS, emulator, and title compatibility.
- Passing one test does not automatically pass the other.
Use game and BIOS materials you are entitled to use. The cited documentation establishes the technical requirements but does not provide jurisdiction-specific legal advice, so check the law that applies where you live before making or using dumps.

The direct-disc feature is new enough that its behavior can change with PS5SX2 code, jailbreak support, firmware, and hardware. The October 10, 2026 report is useful evidence of DVD support, but it is secondary coverage rather than a Sony specification or a complete compatibility database. The developer’s own description of the project as a “passion project” comes with a warning to expect rough edges and an invitation to submit bug reports with logs.
Do not infer any of the following without matching evidence:
- That every PS2 DVD title will boot or remain playable through the whole game.
- That a PS5 model or firmware not listed by the project is compatible.
- That PS2 CD support will arrive, or that the reported limitation has a confirmed permanent hardware cause.
- That disc region, special editions, multi-disc games, or peripherals work merely because another title does.
- That a successful emulator launch makes the setup official, native PS2 compatibility.
Practical decision rule
Classify your disc only after all four gates are passed: homebrew environment, compatible console and firmware, DVD medium, and title-specific evidence. If any gate is missing, label the result “not established” rather than “working.” For a standard PS5, the answer is simply no. For a jailbroken PS5 running a currently supported PS5SX2 setup, a PS2 DVD is a plausible but not guaranteed candidate; a PS2 CD is outside the direct-disc support reported on October 10, 2026.
