The reliable test is whether the game needs a particular disc to start, then whether the signed-in PlayStation account shows a completed PlayStation Store purchase. A downloaded game icon or installed files do not prove that you own a digital copy: disc games also install data, and access can come from PlayStation Plus or another user’s console-sharing entitlement.
Use the checks below on PS5 or PS4 to identify the source of access, resolve a padlock icon, and handle the special case of a PS4 disc upgraded to a PS5 version.
What “digital” and “disc-based” mean on PlayStation
Three separate things are easy to confuse:
- Installed game files: Data stored on the console so a game can run. Both downloaded games and disc games can have installed files.
- License or entitlement: The account or service permission that allows the console to launch a digital purchase, subscription title, or shared game.
- Physical disc: The Blu-ray game disc used to verify access to a disc-based copy. The disc may be needed every time you play, even after the game is fully installed.
A game is a personal digital purchase when the PlayStation Store transaction belongs to your account and the title is available in that account’s Game Library. A game is disc-dependent when the console requires the matching physical disc at launch or during play. A title can also be available through an active PlayStation Plus benefit or another person’s console-sharing setting; that access is not the same as a personal purchase.
The quickest way to identify the license source
- Test the physical requirement. Eject every disc, then try to start the game. If the console asks you to insert the game disc, or the game only starts after that disc is inserted, the playable copy is disc-dependent.
- Check the account that is currently signed in. Open Game Library and look for the title. Then inspect that account’s transaction history for a completed PlayStation Store purchase.
- Check other access routes. If there is no matching purchase, determine whether the title is included with an active PlayStation Plus benefit or is being supplied by another user’s console-sharing setting.
- Treat a padlock as an access problem, not a format label. Verify the account, subscription, sharing arrangement, and disc requirement before deciding whether the game is digital or physical.
- For an upgraded PS4 disc game, keep the disc. The downloaded PS5 version still requires the qualifying PS4 disc inserted each time you play.
This sequence separates the media from the permission. A file on the hard drive shows only that data is installed; it does not identify the license that authorizes play.

How to check for a physical-disc requirement
Use an eject-and-launch test
- Close the game completely.
- Remove the game disc from the console.
- Start the title from the home screen or Game Library.
- Note the exact message. A request for the game disc means the installed copy is tied to physical media. If the title launches normally without a disc, continue with the account checks; it may be a digital purchase, subscription access, or sharing access.
Do not use the game icon, cover art, or installation location as evidence. A disc installation can look identical to a digital download in the user interface.
If the console does not recognize the disc
When a known disc-based game fails to start, first establish whether the issue is recognition rather than licensing. Eject the disc, check it for dirt or damage, and reinsert it with the label facing the correct direction for your console. PlayStation’s troubleshooting guidance treats a clean, properly inserted disc as the starting point for disc-version problems. If the console still cannot read it, follow the current PS4 or PS5 disc-troubleshooting instructions for your system software. A read error does not turn a disc copy into a digital license.
How to verify a digital PlayStation Store purchase
Check Game Library on the purchasing account
Sign in to the account that may have bought the game and open Game Library. PlayStation states that games purchased from PlayStation Store are displayed there. If the title is absent, make sure you are not viewing another user’s account and that you are looking in the purchased portion of the library rather than only installed games.
Library visibility is useful evidence, but the transaction record is the stronger confirmation. A title can appear on a console because of sharing or a subscription even when the current user never purchased it.
Confirm the transaction history
- Use the account that was charged, not merely the account that currently plays the game.
- Open the account’s transaction-history view through PlayStation account management or the console’s account and payment menus.
- Search for the game, edition, and purchase date. Confirm that the transaction completed rather than remaining cancelled, refunded, or failed.
- Check that the store region and account are the ones associated with the copy you are trying to use.
PlayStation recommends transaction-history verification when a Store purchase seems to be missing. If the transaction is present, you have evidence of a digital entitlement for that account. If it is not present, do not infer that the game is disc-based yet; check subscription and sharing access next.

Check PlayStation Plus and console sharing
PlayStation Plus access
A game may be playable because it is included in an active PlayStation Plus benefit rather than because you bought it outright. Check which account claims the subscription and whether that benefit is still active. If the subscription expires, the catalog changes, or the account that supplied the benefit is no longer available, the game can become locked even though its files remain installed.
Subscription access is a service entitlement. It should not be described as a personal Store purchase, and it does not establish that you own a digital copy you can use independently of the subscription.

On a shared console, a household member may have purchased the game or enabled the console-sharing setting that allows other users to play it. Ask which PSN account completed the purchase and verify that account’s transaction history. Also check whether that account’s sharing setting is still enabled on this console.
Seeing a title in your own library, or being able to launch it while another user is configured on the console, does not by itself prove that the purchase belongs to you. The entitlement may disappear if the purchaser disables sharing, signs out, or loses access to the account.
What a padlock icon does—and does not—tell you
A padlock generally indicates that the current user cannot validate an entitlement at that moment. It is not a reliable indicator of whether the underlying copy is digital or disc-based. A digital purchase can show a padlock after an account or network problem, while a disc game can show one when the required disc is missing or unreadable.

Use this order of checks:
- Confirm that you are signed in to the account that bought the game.
- Check the account’s transaction history for a completed Store purchase.
- Check the relevant PlayStation Plus benefit and its expiration status.
- Check whether another user’s console-sharing setting supplies the entitlement.
- If it is a disc copy, insert the correct disc and verify that the console recognizes it.
Restore licenses when a purchase is present but unavailable
If the transaction is visible but the game remains locked, restore licenses. PlayStation says this process does not affect saved data.
- PS5: Go to Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses, select the restore option, and then retry the game.
- PS4: Go to Settings > Account Management > Restore Licenses, run the restore, and retry the game.
Menu wording can vary with system software and region. If your labels differ, use the current support instructions for your console rather than selecting an unrelated reset option. Restoring licenses does not repair a damaged disc, create a purchase that never existed, or convert a subscription entitlement into ownership.
PS4 disc upgraded to a digital PS5 version
This is the most common case that appears to be digital but remains disc-dependent. For an eligible PS4 game, PlayStation may let you download or claim a PS5 version while you own the PS4 disc. The PS5 game files are digital, but the physical PS4 disc remains the proof of entitlement.
How to recognize this upgrade path
- You originally obtained the game on a PS4 disc.
- The console offered an upgrade or PS5 version associated with that disc.
- The PS5 version was downloaded, yet the console asks for the PS4 disc when you play.
Insert the qualifying PS4 disc every time you want to play the upgraded PS5 version. Downloading the PS5 files does not remove that requirement.
Important eligibility limits
The upgrade process requires a PS5 console with a compatible disc drive. A PS5 Digital Edition without a disc drive cannot use the cited PS4-disc upgrade route. The PS4 disc must be from the same country or region as the PlayStation account. Eligibility, price, and the duration of an offer vary by game; not every PS4 title qualifies, and an upgrade is not necessarily free.

If you sell, lend, or lose the qualifying disc, you also lose the physical proof needed to launch the upgraded copy. A separate digital purchase, if one exists in the account’s transaction history, would be a different entitlement.

Common situations and the correct conclusion
“The game is installed, so I must own it digitally.”
Not necessarily. Disc versions install substantial game data, and the icon does not record how access is authorized. Eject the disc and check the purchasing account’s transaction history.
“There is a padlock, so it must be a disc game.”
No. A padlock is an entitlement symptom. Verify the account, subscription, sharing arrangement, and disc before identifying the format. Restore licenses if a completed digital purchase is present.
“I can play it from my profile, but I never bought it.”
Another account may be sharing its purchase, or the title may be available through PlayStation Plus. Identify the supplying account and check whether its purchase or subscription is still valid.

“The PS5 version downloaded, so I can leave the PS4 disc at home.”
Not for a disc-based upgrade. The qualifying PS4 disc must be inserted each time. The download changes the game files and version, not the physical proof required for access.

“My transaction is missing, but the game is on the console.”
Check every PSN account used on the console, then check PlayStation Plus and console sharing. If no account has a transaction and no active entitlement explains access, the installed files alone do not establish ownership.
A practical decision checklist
Use this checklist when you need a definitive answer for one title:
- Do I have a physical disc, and does the title require it when launched without the disc?
- Which PSN account originally obtained the game?
- Does that account’s Game Library contain the title?
- Does its transaction history show a completed PlayStation Store purchase?
- Is the game currently supplied by an active PlayStation Plus benefit?
- Is another user’s console-sharing setting supplying access?
- Is this a PS4 disc upgraded to a PS5 version?
- If a digital purchase is confirmed but locked, have I restored licenses using the correct PS5 or PS4 path?
The answer is “digital personal purchase” only when the purchasing account’s Store entitlement explains access without a disc. The answer is “disc-based” when the physical disc is required. If a subscription, sharing arrangement, or disc upgrade is involved, describe that route specifically instead of forcing it into one of those two categories.

The support procedures cover both PS4 and PS5, but labels can change with system software and region. Follow the menus shown on your console and confirm the account region when checking a purchase or upgrade. For disc-to-PS5 upgrades, the disc and account must meet the stated country/region condition, and the console must have a compatible disc drive.
When asking support for help, provide the exact console model, game edition, disc or digital source, account that may have purchased it, and the message shown on screen. Separating those details prevents a disc-read problem from being treated as a missing digital license, or a missing entitlement from being misdiagnosed as faulty installation data.
