Do not rely on the words “Deluxe,” “Collector’s,” or “Launch.” To confirm a digital bonus, match the exact game edition, platform, and region with the publisher’s official product or support page, then check the retailer listing, every package insert, and your receipt or order email. Finally, read the code’s redemption platform, account, internet, expiry, preorder, and disc-use conditions.
What “digital bonus” can mean
A physical game package may include digital content in several different ways. The bonus might be an extra character, soundtrack, vehicle, cosmetic item, expansion, upgrade entitlement, or even the complete game delivered as a download code. “Physical edition” describes how you bought the package, not necessarily where every item is stored.
- Voucher in the box: A paper slip, card, or insert carries a one-use code.
- Code on another package component: The code may be printed on a disc holder, cardboard disc, playable cassette, steelbook insert, or collectible item.
- Retailer-issued code: A preorder or store-exclusive bonus may arrive in a separate email, on the receipt, or in the retailer’s order page rather than inside the game case.
- Digital game entitlement: A collector’s package can contain a full-game code even when the outer package looks like a physical release.
- Automatic entitlement: A purchase made through a publisher’s or platform’s digital store may attach the content to your account without a code.
- Disc-based game plus digital add-on: The base game is on a disc, while an upgrade or bonus is downloaded separately.
These delivery methods are not interchangeable. A voucher can be limited to one platform or region, a retailer code can be available only to preorder customers, and an automatic entitlement cannot be transferred by handing someone a piece of paper.

- Full game title, including a subtitle or year.
- Edition name and any bundle or collector designation.
- Platform (for example, PS4, PS5, Xbox, PC, or a platform-specific version).
- Country or region where it was purchased and the account region used for redemption.
- Retailer and whether the purchase was a preorder, launch-day order, used copy, or replacement.
- Whether the package is new, opened, or second-hand.
Two boxes with nearly identical artwork can have different contents in different countries or on different consoles. A retailer may also use “special edition” as marketing language even when the publisher’s official edition list uses another name. Treat the edition identifier, platform logo, product code, and region marking as more reliable than the front-of-box description.
Verify the contents on official pages
1. Check the publisher’s product or support page
Search the publisher’s official site for the exact edition and platform. Compare its contents list with your order confirmation. Look specifically for wording such as “voucher,” “download code,” “digital entitlement,” “included while supplies last,” “preorder bonus,” or “internet connection required.” If the page lists a disc and a code separately, do not assume the code is printed on the disc.
2. Check the platform’s support information
Platform support pages may explain region restrictions, account requirements, code redemption, and whether a cross-generation upgrade needs the original disc. Use the page for your platform and market; a support article for one country may describe an offer that never existed elsewhere.

3. Reconcile differences instead of choosing the more attractive description
If the publisher lists one set of items and the retailer lists another, keep the claims separate. Retailers can add their own preorder code, while the publisher’s edition contents remain unchanged. Ask the retailer which promise applies to your order and retain screenshots or a saved copy of the listing.

Where to look for the code
Inspect the entire package methodically before contacting support. Do not throw away apparently decorative components until you have checked them.
- Open the game case and remove the disc or cartridge. Check the tray, hub, sleeve, and the reverse side of the paper insert.
- Read every loose leaflet, including warranty, safety, soundtrack, map, and promotion cards. A code may be printed in small type under a scratch-off panel.
- Inspect the cardboard disc or inner packaging in collector’s sets. Some publishers place the game code on cardboard rather than on the playable disc.
- Check separate items such as a steelbook, soundtrack card, art book, or playable cassette. The item itself may carry the code or redemption instructions.
- Open the retailer’s order page and read the receipt and dispatch email. A preorder code may be delivered after shipment or in a message separate from the purchase confirmation.
- Search your email for the retailer’s name, the game title, “code,” “voucher,” “download,” or “preorder.” Verify the sender before using a link or code.
A code that looks unused is not proof that it works. In a used game, the previous owner may already have redeemed it, and some inserts remain in the box after the entitlement has been consumed.
Read the redemption terms before trying the code
Record the conditions next to the code. They determine whether the advertised content is actually available to you.

Redeem only after confirming the platform and region. A mistaken redemption can attach the entitlement to the wrong account, and support may not be able to move it.

Distinguish a bonus from the game entitlement
Ask two separate questions: “Where is the base game?” and “Where is the extra content?” A package can answer them differently.
Disc for the game, voucher for extras
The disc supplies the base game, while a paper code unlocks an expansion, cosmetic pack, soundtrack, or edition upgrade. Losing the voucher does not necessarily remove the base game, but the bonus may be unavailable without it.
Disc for the game, code for a newer-generation upgrade
A cross-generation package may let you download a PS5 or Xbox Series version while still requiring the older disc as proof of ownership. The downloaded version can occupy storage and require internet access, yet the disc remains necessary each time you play.
Full game supplied as a digital code
Some collector’s packages contain physical memorabilia but provide the complete game as a platform code. The box is physical; the game license is digital. PlayStation Direct’s MLB The Show 24 Negro Leagues Edition listing is an example: it described a physical collector’s package containing full-game PS5 and PS4 digital codes, a steelbook, and other extras, with an internet connection required for redemption.

Automatic digital entitlement
When the purchase is made through a publisher’s digital store, the bonus may be applied to the account automatically. Bethesda’s RAGE 2 guidance distinguishes this arrangement from physical purchases: digital-store purchases receive the content automatically rather than through a separate code.

These examples show why an edition name alone cannot answer the question. The same publisher can use different code locations and rules for different games, and the same game can have different arrangements by platform or market.
How to redeem a confirmed code safely
- Sign in to the account you intend to keep using. Check its country or region before entering anything.
- Open the platform’s store or account area and choose its code-redemption function. Labels vary by console and software version.
- Enter the characters exactly as printed, ignoring spaces only when the platform instructs you to do so.
- Read the confirmation screen. Verify the game name, bonus description, platform, and account before accepting.
- Start the download from your library or the game’s store page. Keep the console connected until the entitlement and any required update finish installing.
- Launch the game and check its in-game extras, add-on list, or account inventory. Some bonuses appear only after a restart or after completing an introductory step.
- Keep the voucher and receipt until the content appears and you have confirmed whether the disc must remain inserted.
If the platform reports that a code is invalid, do not repeatedly guess characters or try it on a different account. Capture the exact error message and preserve the code, receipt, and edition details for support.
What to do when a promised code is missing
Document the purchase
Photograph the front and back of the box, the product identifier, every insert, and the disc or cartridge. Save the order confirmation, receipt, delivery record, and the page that described the bonus. Record the purchase date and region.

Contact the retailer first when the offer was retailer-specific
Use the retailer’s support route for a preorder code, a missing email, or a listing that promised an exclusive item. Ask whether the code was issued separately and request a replacement or written explanation.
Contact the publisher for edition or manufacturing questions
Use the publisher’s support route when the official edition contents say a code should be in the package, the insert is missing, or the code fails despite matching the stated platform and region. Bethesda’s guidance for missing physical-edition codes directs customers to the retailer or Bethesda support.
Explain if the copy is used
Tell support whether the game was bought second-hand. A used voucher may already be redeemed even if the paper looks untouched, and a publisher may treat the bonus as a one-time entitlement rather than a feature of the disc itself.

- Trusting the edition adjective: “Collector’s” does not prove that the game is on a disc. Match the official contents list.
- Checking only the case: Retailer preorder codes can be emailed or printed on a receipt. Review the order record.
- Assuming every region has the same bonus: Verify the country-specific page and account region.
- Confusing a download with ownership independent of the disc: Read whether the disc remains a required license check.
- Ignoring dates: Preorder offers can end at launch, while other codes have a printed validity date or stock limit.
- Redeeming on the wrong account: Confirm the signed-in account before accepting the code; digital entitlements are commonly account-bound.
- Buying a used copy for an unused bonus: Treat the code as potentially consumed and ask the seller or publisher about eligibility before purchase.
- Assuming a missing paper insert means no bonus exists: Check separate components and the retailer’s email before concluding that the package is incomplete.
A quick decision checklist
Use this checklist whenever a listing says “digital bonus included.”
- Have you recorded the exact title, edition, platform, retailer, and region?
- Does the publisher’s official page list the same bonus for that platform and market?
- Does the platform support page confirm that your account can redeem it?
- Have you checked the case, disc holder, inserts, steelbook, soundtrack or collectible, and any scratch-off panel?
- Have you checked the receipt, order page, dispatch email, and spam folder for a separate retailer code?
- Is the code for the base game, an add-on, an upgrade, or a separate entitlement?
- Does it require internet access, a particular account region, a preorder, or an expiry date?
- Will the disc still be required after the download?
- If the code is absent or rejected, do you have photos and proof of purchase ready for the correct support team?
When the official information is unclear
Do not infer the contents from an unboxing video, a marketplace photograph, or a similarly named edition. Ask the seller for the product code and region, then compare those details with the current publisher listing. If the publisher has changed the package over time, use the edition and manufacturing information tied to your purchase date. A clear answer may be “the base game is physical, the bonus is a one-use voucher, and the voucher’s current availability is not guaranteed”; that is more useful than treating every item pictured in a listing as included.
Product pages and redemption conditions can change. Recheck the official listing immediately before buying, especially for preorder bonuses, limited-stock codes, regional editions, and packages that contain a newer-generation download.
