Short answer: A large “percent off” label does not prove a game is cheap. A good PC game deal is one that is low for that specific game and edition in your region, sold through a legitimate storefront, and worth buying now instead of waiting. Check the game’s price history, compare like-for-like offers, inspect bundles, and then decide whether the saving justifies losing the option to wait.
What makes a PC game deal genuinely good?
Price is only one part of the decision. Start with the amount you will actually pay in your own currency, then put that amount in context:
- Historical context: Is today’s price close to this game’s previous sale prices or its recorded low?
- Like-for-like value: Are you comparing the same edition, downloadable content (DLC), license type, redemption platform, and region?
- Purchase certainty: Is the listing available in your country, from a legitimate seller, and clear about where the key or entitlement will be redeemed?
- What you will use: Does a bundle contain games or DLC you actually want, or is its headline discount encouraging you to buy extras?
- Timing: Do you need to play now, or would waiting for another sale have little downside?
There is no universal discount percentage that defines a good deal. A 20% reduction may be excellent for a game that rarely goes on sale, while a 75% reduction may be ordinary for a title that repeatedly reaches a much lower price. Treat the advertised percentage as an opening clue, not a verdict.

Use this six-step check before you buy
1. Identify the exact offer
Write down the game’s precise name, edition, storefront, redemption platform, currency, and final price. A base game, deluxe edition, season pass, and subscription entitlement are different products even when their titles look similar.

- Edition: Confirm whether the listing is Standard, Deluxe, Gold, Ultimate, a complete edition, or a package with DLC.
- License: Determine whether you receive a permanent license, a time-limited subscription entitlement, or a key that must be activated elsewhere.
- Platform: A PC game sold for one launcher may not activate on another. Check the redemption platform before comparing prices.
- Region and currency: Use the store region attached to your account. A price shown for another country is not automatically purchasable, transferable, or permitted for your account.
- Final checkout amount: Note taxes, fees, or currency conversion that appear only at checkout.
Save the product-page URL or a screenshot of the offer details. This prevents you from comparing a changing listing with a different edition later.
2. Check the game’s Steam price history with SteamDB
SteamDB says every Steam app page has a price table and graph. Use its search box to open the exact game’s app page, then select your own currency and region before interpreting the chart. The price-history table lets you compare today’s price with earlier sale prices and the lowest value recorded for that market.

- Current price in your market: Make sure the currency and country match the account you will use.
- Previous sale levels: Note whether the game repeatedly reaches a lower price during seasonal or publisher sales.
- Recorded low: Check the date, edition, and region associated with the low. A low captured for a different package is not a valid comparison.
- History coverage: A graph that does not cover the game’s entire commercial life may not show its earliest price. Treat “lowest” as lowest recorded in the available data, not an eternal guarantee.
SteamDB states that its data is provided as-is and that it makes no guarantees about accuracy, completeness, or timeliness. It also says it uses the price returned by Steam’s API as the lowest price. A bundle can explain an unexpected result: the lowest value you see may reflect bundle availability rather than a normal standalone purchase. Use the chart as a reference, then confirm the live store page.
3. Compare authorized stores on IsThereAnyDeal
Search the title on IsThereAnyDeal’s getting-started page, then open the game’s detail page. The service provides price-history information and tracks listings from multiple stores. Its live site, IsThereAnyDeal, can show offers from stores such as Steam, Humble Store, and Fanatical, along with bundles and subscriptions.
For each apparently cheaper listing, verify all of the following before treating it as a real alternative:
- The seller is authorized and the offer is available in your country.
- The edition, DLC, language support, and license match the offer you first considered.
- The key or entitlement redeems on the same platform you intend to use.
- The displayed price is current and in a comparable currency; listings can change or expire.
- The merchant’s checkout total does not add a fee that erases the apparent saving.
IsThereAnyDeal also lets you add a game to a Waitlist, customize notification rules, and import a Steam wishlist. Those features are useful when your target price is below today’s offer, but they do not reserve a future price.

4. Check bundles and subscriptions separately
A game may look unusually cheap because it is included in a bundle or subscription. Open the bundle contents and compare the price with the exact items you would otherwise purchase. Count only the value of games and DLC you genuinely expect to use.
For example, imagine a standalone game costs $24 and a $30 bundle adds two $10 games. The bundle is not automatically a $14 saving for you: if you would never play either extra game, your relevant comparison is $24 versus $30, not the combined list prices. If one extra game is on your planned-play list, assign value only to that item and keep the calculation personal.
Subscriptions require a different comparison. Access during a subscription period is not the same as owning a permanent license. Consider how long you expect to play, whether the title can leave the catalog, and whether you would still want access after canceling. Do not compare a one-month access fee with a permanent purchase as if they were identical products.
5. Decide whether waiting has value for you
Publishers, not price-history sites, choose sale discounts. SteamDB’s FAQ puts it plainly: “Game publishers set the discounts, and they can choose any discount they want.” Its history can show past sale prices, but it cannot know which games, prices, or discounts will appear in a future sale.
Use your own circumstances to decide:
- Buy now when you plan to play immediately, the current price is close to the game’s prior lows, and the cost fits your budget.
- Wait when the price is above recurring sale levels, your backlog is large, or you would be satisfied only at a lower target.
- Wait with an alert when you want the game but do not want to monitor listings manually. Add it to a store wishlist or IsThereAnyDeal Waitlist and set a notification threshold that reflects your budget.
A recurring sale is evidence that a discount has happened before, not a promise about its date or size. Decide how much uncertainty and delay you are willing to accept rather than trying to predict the next sale precisely.
6. Recheck the merchant page at checkout
Price trackers and comparison pages can be incomplete or stale. Immediately before paying, return to the merchant’s final product and checkout pages and confirm:
- The exact edition and included DLC.
- The redemption platform and any launcher requirement.
- Your account country, currency, and regional restrictions.
- The seller or publisher shown on the listing.
- The total after taxes, fees, and any currency conversion.
- The refund terms and activation instructions.
If any of these details differ from the comparison page, use the merchant’s current terms and total for your decision.

How to read a game’s price history correctly
Separate “all-time low” from “lowest recorded”
A tracker’s low is tied to the data it has captured, the region selected, and the product package observed. It may exclude an older promotion, a short-lived bundle, or a market you cannot use. Read the date and package next to the low instead of treating the label as a universal fact.
Look for a pattern, not one isolated dip
Several previous sales at the same level are more useful for planning than one brief outlier. Note whether discounts appear during predictable seasonal events, how long they last, and whether the game’s price has fallen as it aged. This helps you set a realistic target without claiming that the next sale will match the past.
Check the history’s scope and data quality
SteamDB’s FAQ warns that its data may not be accurate, complete, or timely. IsThereAnyDeal’s listings are also time-sensitive. A missing entry does not prove that a lower price never existed, and a displayed entry does not guarantee that the merchant still honors it. Use both services to discover leads, then verify the store.
Why region and currency can change the answer
Digital games do not have one worldwide price. Stores use regional pricing, taxes, and market-specific rules. SteamDB’s March 31, 2026 article, “Updated Steam pricing recommendations (2026)”, reports that Valve published updated conversion data covering 37 currencies and four region groups. Developers can use those recommendations, choose a different conversion method, or set prices themselves.
That means a price-history result from another country is not a valid bargain for you by default. Compare the price displayed for your own store region and currency. Do not assume that changing your account region, using a foreign payment method, or buying a key intended for another market is lawful, available, or supported. Regional restrictions can prevent activation even when the nominal price is lower.

Compare like-for-like offers with a checklist

A practical decision framework
Buy now
Buying now is rational when the offer is for the exact product you want, the final local price is at or near the game’s established sale range, and you have a clear plan to play it. A slightly higher price can still be reasonable if playing this week has meaningful value to you.

Wait for a lower target
Wait when the current price is materially above several prior sale levels, you have no immediate use for the game, or the purchase would displace a more important expense. Record the target in a wishlist or Waitlist alert rather than relying on memory.
Reject the offer
Reject a listing when the edition or platform is wrong, the region is restricted, the seller or license is unclear, or the checkout total removes the expected saving. A discount cannot compensate for an unusable entitlement.

Using the percentage as the verdict
Problem: “80% off” sounds definitive even when the game regularly sells for less.
Fix: Compare the current local price with the game’s own history and recent sale levels.
Comparing different editions
Problem: A base-game listing is compared with a complete edition, or a deluxe package is treated as the same product.
Fix: List included DLC and compare only packages with matching contents.
Ignoring the redemption platform
Problem: A cheaper key activates on a launcher you do not use or cannot access.

Fix: Confirm the platform on the merchant page before counting the offer as comparable.
Assuming a bundle is always cheaper
Problem: The bundle’s arithmetic saving is based on games you would never buy.
Fix: Count only items you actually want and compare the resulting personal value with the standalone price.
Treating a tracker as the seller
Problem: A cached or expired listing is mistaken for a guaranteed current offer.
Fix: Follow the listing to the merchant, select your region, and verify the checkout total immediately before purchase.
Trying to forecast the next sale
Problem: Past timing is treated as a promise of a particular future discount.
Fix: Use history to set an expectation and an alert threshold, then decide how long you are willing to wait.
