To check whether a news story or screenshot is authentic, verify the specific claim against its original source and independent evidence, then trace any image to earlier appearances and test whether its caption fits the date, place, and event. A real image can still be used with a false caption. Reverse-image results, metadata, visual clues, and AI detectors can help, but none alone proves a story true.
Start by separating the claim from the image
Write down exactly what the post says happened. Separate verifiable details—such as who, what, where, and when—from opinion or commentary. Note who is making the claim and what the screenshot or image is supposed to prove.
A screenshot may faithfully show a real post while the post itself is mistaken. A genuine photograph may show the claimed people or place but come from a different date or event. Assess the claim, the media, and the caption as related but distinct questions.
Find the original story or post
Open the linked article or post instead of relying on a cropped screenshot. Check the publisher, author, publication date, cited records, direct statements, and links to underlying material. Search a distinctive phrase from the screenshot in quotation marks or as a precise search query; this may reveal the original page or earlier copies.

The UK House of Commons Library recommends tracing media to its original source because a social post can omit context present at the source. If you cannot find the original, treat the screenshot as an unverified copy, not as proof that the depicted statement was published or that its claim is accurate. Check for independent corroboration
Look for primary records, direct statements, or reporting from sources that gathered evidence independently. Several sites repeating the same unsourced post do not amount to several confirmations. The Associated Press says its journalists corroborate facts using several independent, reliable sources. For consequential or fast-moving claims, distinguish what is confirmed from what is still developing. If no reliable source or primary record supports a central detail, do not present the claim as established.

Reverse-search the image and inspect the results
Use Google Lens or another reverse-image search service to find visually similar images and pages where the image appears. Google’s “About this image” feature may show when Google first saw a similar image, other pages using it, and early uses. Open the result pages and check their dates, captions, and surrounding context; a match can reveal an earlier appearance, but it does not by itself establish the image’s origin or the truth of the current claim. - Use the image itself when possible, rather than a post containing extra text or interface elements.
- Review multiple matches and open the pages, rather than relying only on thumbnails or result labels.
- Compare dates and captions to see whether the image predates the event being claimed.
- Look for the earliest available source, while remembering that the earliest result you find may not be the original.
A social-media screenshot may be difficult to search accurately if it is cropped, resized, or overlaid with text. If a direct image search finds nothing, search a distinctive phrase from the screenshot and try a less-cropped version if available.
Test whether the caption fits the scene
Compare visible clues with the claimed location, date, and event: signs and language, recognizable landmarks, weather, landscape, lighting, and other time or place details. Search for reporting and imagery from the claimed date. A mismatch does not always identify what actually happened, but it is a reason not to repeat the caption as fact.

The House of Commons Library gives an example of authentic video miscaptioned as a different event: footage claimed to show a 2024 explosion at Maryland’s Frances Scott Key Bridge actually showed a 2022 Kerch Bridge explosion. Its verification briefing explains why context and source tracing matter even when the media itself is genuine.
Use metadata and Content Credentials as clues, not verdicts
Metadata can contain information about a file’s source or history, but it may be missing or altered. Social platforms may remove metadata, and users can edit it; Google also warns that image credit and source metadata may be modified. C2PA Content Credentials can record provenance information, including details about source and editing history. That can help assess how a file came to exist, but it cannot prove that the accompanying caption or news claim is true. Odd details in a generated image may be useful prompts for further checking, but visual errors are becoming less reliable as a way to identify synthetic media. AI detection tools can also be wrong. Trace the source, compare versions, check context, and seek independent corroboration instead of treating a detector result as a verdict.
In May 2026, Google announced expanded SynthID and Content Credentials verification capabilities. The announcement described a rollout across products, so availability can vary. A missing verification option does not establish that an image is authentic or synthetic. Google’s May 2026 announcement.
What each verification method can—and cannot—establish

When evidence conflicts, pause before sharing
If the source, caption, metadata, or independent reporting disagree, do not share the claim as confirmed. Say what you could verify, what remains unknown, and what evidence would change your assessment. High-impact claims may require specialist reporting, primary records, access to the original file, geolocation expertise, or direct contact with the creator—work that cannot always be settled from one screenshot.
