To check whether a new domain extension is available, first look up its exact string in ICANN’s 2026-round application list, then check whether ICANN has delegated it into the DNS root zone, and finally verify that the registry has opened public registrations and that the specific domain name can be registered. These are separate stages: an application is not approval, and delegation does not guarantee that every name under the extension is open to the public.
First, distinguish the extension from a domain name
A domain extension is the top-level domain (TLD) after the final dot, such as .com. A complete domain name combines a name with a TLD, such as brand.example. If you want to know whether a new extension is coming, check the TLD. If you want to register a particular address, check both the TLD’s status and the exact name beneath it. ICANN describes gTLDs and the program’s status.
Check the extension’s status in three stages
1. Search ICANN’s application list
- Open ICANN’s New gTLD Program Application Publication and Statistics page.
- Search for the exact proposed extension string, without the leading dot if the page’s search expects the string alone.
- Open the matching application record and note the applicant, status, and date you checked. If there are multiple applications for the same string, record each applicant rather than assuming which one will prevail.
An application means that an applicant proposed the string; it does not mean ICANN has approved it, that it has been delegated, or that people can register names under it. ICANN says application statuses other than Withdrawn, Terminated, Deactivated, and Delegated are subject to change. Treat a non-final status as current information, not a settled outcome.

Use ICANN’s delegated strings information to see whether the extension has been introduced into the Internet’s DNS root zone. Delegation is a later milestone than application, but it still does not establish that public registration is open for every name.

3. Verify registration of the exact name
If the extension is delegated, check the registry’s launch information and a registrar’s search for the precise second-level name you want. Confirm whether registrations are open to the public or subject to a launch phase, eligibility rules, or reserved-name restrictions. Before purchasing, check the quoted price and renewal terms; some names may have special pricing. A lookup result for one name does not establish that all names under the TLD are available.
How to interpret the result

What the 2026 application publication tells you
ICANN published the 2026-round application list on 7 October 2026. Its announcement reported 1,615 applications, including 333 brand applications, 16 community-based applications, 15 self-identified geographic-name applications, and 21 applications for Internationalized Domain Names. These figures were a primary-string snapshot as of 7 October; ICANN said final counts and types would be confirmed on String Confirmation Day. Read ICANN’s announcement and dated figures.

As of the schedule published in that announcement, the replacement period ran from 8 October 2026 at 00:01 UTC through 21 October 2026 at 23:59 UTC; String Confirmation Day was scheduled for 17 November 2026; and the Community Input and Objections Period was scheduled for 17 November 2026 through 16 March 2027. ICANN expected string evaluation to take 180 days and said the prioritization draw date would be determined in the first half of 2027. These are program milestones, not a promised launch date for any particular extension. Consult the ICANN 2026 Round page and current application record for updates.
What to record before you rely on a result
- The exact extension string and the applicant or applicants shown by ICANN.
- The application status and the date you checked it.
- Whether ICANN lists the string as delegated.
- Whether public registration has opened, along with any eligibility or launch-phase restrictions.
- The exact domain name’s availability and the displayed initial and renewal terms.
Application records and program schedules can change. Recheck ICANN’s current listing and the registry or registrar close to the time you plan to act.
