Select the game’s actual .app bundle in Finder, press Command-I, and read the Kind field. Application (Apple silicon) is native, Application (Universal) contains both Apple-silicon and Intel code, and Application (Intel) requires Rosetta on an Apple-silicon Mac.
If the game is Universal, also check Open using Rosetta in the same window. A Universal game normally launches its native Apple-silicon slice, but that setting can force the Intel slice and translation. This check tells you the app’s architecture and launch preference; it does not certify every launcher, plug-in, anti-cheat module, or helper process bundled with the game.
What the Finder labels mean
Apple-silicon Macs use arm64 processors. Older Mac software was compiled for Intel’s x86_64 architecture. Rosetta is macOS’s translation environment for running Intel-based apps on Apple-silicon hardware. You do not open Rosetta separately: macOS invokes it when an Intel app needs to run.

| Finder “Kind” value | What the game contains | What happens on an Apple-silicon Mac |
|---|---|---|
| Application (Apple silicon) | Apple-silicon executable code | Runs natively; Rosetta is not needed for the app. |
| Application (Universal) | Both Apple-silicon and Intel executable slices | macOS normally chooses the Apple-silicon slice. The user can force the Intel slice with Open using Rosetta. |
| Application (Intel) | Intel executable code only | Runs through Rosetta, provided the current macOS version and the game’s dependencies support it. |
“Universal” describes what code is packaged in the app, not what every launch uses. On Apple silicon, macOS prefers arm64 when it is available. Selecting Open using Rosetta changes that preference for a Universal app.

Check the installed game in Finder
The reliable starting point is the game’s own app bundle, not the storefront client. Steam, another launcher, and the game itself can be separate applications with different architectures.
- Locate the game app. Open Finder and find the installed game’s
.appbundle. If the game is in an Applications folder managed by a launcher, inspect that installed game copy. Do not stop at the launcher’s icon. - Open its information window. Click the game once, choose File > Get Info, or press
Command-I. - Read the Kind field. Record whether Finder says Application (Apple silicon), Application (Universal), or Application (Intel).
- Check the Rosetta option when present. For a Universal app, look for Open using Rosetta. A checked box forces translated Intel execution; an unchecked box allows the normal native choice.
Application (Apple silicon)
This label means the app has an Apple-silicon build. The main game executable can run natively on an Apple-silicon Mac, without Rosetta translating that executable. It does not prove that every separately launched helper, plug-in, or protection component is also native.
Application (Universal)
A Universal binary contains executable code for both Apple-silicon and Intel Macs. Apple describes this as one app that runs natively on both processor families. On Apple silicon, macOS normally selects arm64. If Open using Rosetta is enabled, macOS instead launches the Intel slice through Rosetta. This setting is useful for testing an older plug-in or a game that behaves differently under translation, but it is not the normal native mode.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Application (Intel)
An Intel label means the app has no Apple-silicon slice. On an Apple-silicon Mac, macOS must translate it with Rosetta. The first launch may prompt you to install Rosetta; follow the system prompt while signed in with an account allowed to install system software. Installing Rosetta does not convert the game into an Apple-silicon build—it supplies the translation environment needed to run Intel code.
How to tell what is running right now
Finder’s Get Info window identifies the app package and, for Universal apps, its launch preference. It is not a complete inventory of every process the game may start. A launcher, updater, crash reporter, anti-cheat service, plug-in, or embedded helper can be a separate executable with its own architecture.
When the question is specifically “is this current process native or translated?”, use a runtime process-architecture indicator available in your macOS version. An optional Mac App Store utility called Silicon Info describes whether a running application is native or translated; treat such software as supplementary rather than as Apple’s compatibility certification. The official Apple guidance establishes the Finder labels and Universal-app behavior, but does not provide a current, game-specific Activity Monitor procedure that applies to every macOS release.
For a practical check, start the game, identify the process associated with the game rather than the storefront, and compare its reported architecture with the Finder result. If they disagree, investigate whether you selected the launcher, a helper, or a child process instead of the main game.
Why checking the game—not the launcher—matters
A storefront application and the title it launches are independent app bundles. The storefront may be Universal while an older game remains Intel-only, or the reverse. The architecture label on the storefront therefore cannot answer how the game itself executes.
Find the title’s installed .app bundle and inspect that object. If the launcher keeps files in a nested folder, use Finder’s search within the game’s installation directory and open Get Info on the executable application that starts the title. Avoid changing the architecture setting on the launcher unless you intentionally want the launcher itself to run through Rosetta; that setting does not automatically change the game.

Architecture is not the same as compatibility
A native or Universal label is useful evidence, but it is not a guarantee that a game will start, render correctly, connect to its servers, or support every peripheral. Apple notes that arm64 and x86_64 code cannot be mixed arbitrarily within one process. A game whose main executable is Universal can still fail if it loads an incompatible plug-in or helper into that process.
- Launchers and updaters: The launcher may be a different architecture from the game and may install or invoke additional components.
- Plug-ins and mods: An Intel-only plug-in may not load into a native arm64 process. A native plug-in may likewise be unusable when the game is forced into Rosetta.
- Anti-cheat and protection modules: These can run as separate helpers or inject code into the game. Their architecture and current macOS support can determine whether the title launches.
- Runtime libraries: A game can bundle frameworks or middleware that have their own processor requirements.
- Script-only components: Apple documents that some apps without a conventional executable can be treated specially and run under Rosetta as a precaution. Do not infer the runtime of every component from one package-level label.
If a Universal game fails only after installing a mod, plug-in, or overlay, remove or update that component and test the unmodified game. The architecture of the main app alone cannot explain every failure.

Native Apple-silicon execution
Native execution means the selected process uses arm64 instructions directly on the Mac’s processor. The developer can optimize the game for Apple silicon, but the architecture label does not supply a frame-rate guarantee. Performance still depends on the game engine, graphics API, resolution, quality settings, thermals, memory, and driver behavior.
Rosetta translation
Rosetta translates Intel-based app code so it can execute on Apple silicon. Apple’s general guidance says translated apps often have no noticeable performance difference in typical use, but that statement is not a benchmark for a particular game. Translation overhead, shader compilation, plug-ins, copy-protection modules, and graphics workloads can produce different results from one title to another.
Universal with Rosetta forced
A Universal game launched with Open using Rosetta enabled still contains native arm64 code, but macOS is instructed to use the Intel slice for that launch. This can be a troubleshooting test when a legacy component works only in an Intel process. If you want the normal native path, quit the game, open Get Info, clear Open using Rosetta, and launch again.
How to change a Universal game back to native mode
- Quit the game and any launcher process that keeps the game open.
- In Finder, select the game’s actual
.appbundle. - Press
Command-Ior choose File > Get Info. - Find Open using Rosetta and clear its checkbox.
- Close the window and relaunch the game.
If the checkbox is absent, the app may be Apple-silicon-only, Intel-only, or a Universal app whose current packaging does not expose that option. The Kind field remains the authoritative Finder indication of the package architecture.

When troubleshooting or comparing purchases, write down the exact title, installed version, location of its .app bundle, Kind value, and state of Open using Rosetta. Also note whether you launched it from a storefront, a standalone shortcut, or a launcher. This prevents a common mistake: checking one copy of an app while actually running another copy after an update or reinstall.
Repeat the check after a major game update, because an update can replace the executable, add a helper, or reset packaging details. If you keep separate beta and release installations, inspect each bundle independently. A Universal release and an Intel-only beta can coexist on the same Mac, and Finder reports the architecture of the selected copy only.
What to test when a game behaves differently
- Quit the title completely, including any launcher process that remains open.
- Run the unmodified game with Open using Rosetta cleared, if that option exists.
- Record whether it launches, reaches the main menu, renders correctly, and connects to online services.
- Repeat with Rosetta forced on a Universal build only when troubleshooting requires it.
- Re-enable mods, overlays, plug-ins, or controllers one at a time. The first component that changes the result is a stronger lead than the package label alone.
This controlled comparison distinguishes an architecture-selection problem from a game-specific bug. It also avoids assuming that a translated launch is automatically slower or that a native label guarantees support for every accessory or online service.

Troubleshooting common results
Rosetta installation prompt appears
An Intel-only game, or a helper that requires Intel translation, can trigger a Rosetta installation prompt. Confirm that you are launching the expected game app, then install Rosetta through macOS if you trust the title and its source. If installation is blocked, check your administrator permissions, network connection, available storage, and macOS update status before retrying.
The game says Universal but will not start
Inspect the game’s own bundle rather than the launcher, then test with Open using Rosetta both disabled and enabled. A Universal label does not make an incompatible helper compatible. Update the game, launcher, anti-cheat module, graphics or middleware components, and any installed plug-ins. Temporarily remove mods and overlays to determine whether a separate component is responsible.
The game launches but a plug-in fails
Check whether the plug-in has an Apple-silicon build. A native arm64 process cannot load arbitrary x86_64 code into the same process, and forcing the main app through Rosetta may be required for an Intel-only extension. Use only a plug-in version documented for the game’s current release and launch mode.
The launcher is native but the game is translated
This is possible because the two are separate applications. Recheck the title’s .app bundle and read its Kind field. Do not use the launcher’s architecture as a proxy for the game.
The architecture seems to change after an update
Game updates can replace the app bundle, alter the executable, or add a new helper. Repeat the Finder check after major updates and after changing launch options. A Universal game may also retain the Open using Rosetta setting until you clear it.
Rosetta’s changing macOS support
Apple’s current support guidance says Rosetta is generally available through macOS 27. Apple also describes a narrower allowance under macOS 28 for certain older, unmaintained games that rely on Intel-based frameworks. This is an operating-system policy, not a promise that every Intel game will work on either release.
Before upgrading macOS—or buying a game that is Intel-only—check Apple’s current Rosetta support page and the developer’s release notes for the exact game version. Support can depend on the title’s frameworks, copy protection, helper tools, and online services. A game that works today through Rosetta may require a developer update when general Intel-app support changes.
Use these checks when comparing two Mac games
If you are deciding between titles, compare the complete execution path rather than looking only for a “Universal” badge.
| Comparison question | Why it matters | Evidence to collect |
|---|---|---|
| What is the game’s architecture? | Apple-silicon and Universal builds can use arm64; Intel-only builds depend on Rosetta. | Finder’s Kind field on the installed game app. |
| Is native code selected? | A Universal app can be deliberately launched through translation. | Whether Open using Rosetta is checked. |
| Do dependencies match? | Helpers, plug-ins, anti-cheat, and frameworks can prevent launch or in-process loading. | Developer notes and the behavior of the unmodified game. |
| How long is the OS path likely to remain viable? | Intel-only games are exposed to changes in Rosetta availability. | Current Apple macOS guidance and the game developer’s support statement. |
| What is known about this exact release? | Architecture alone does not establish game-specific compatibility or performance. | Recent notes for the title and its current version. |
Do not treat a generic “works on Mac” claim as evidence of native execution. Ask for the title’s architecture, its launch mode, and the status of its required components.

Frequently asked questions
Does an Intel game need Rosetta every time?
Yes, an Intel-only app on Apple silicon needs the Rosetta translation environment whenever it runs. Rosetta is invoked by macOS; you do not launch it as a separate game or utility.
Is a Universal game always native?
No. Universal means both arm64 and Intel code are present. macOS normally chooses arm64 on Apple silicon, but a checked Open using Rosetta option deliberately selects the Intel slice.
Can I check the Steam app instead?
You can check Steam’s architecture, but that answers only how Steam runs. Locate and inspect the game’s own .app bundle because the storefront and title can have different architectures.
Does Apple silicon guarantee better frame rates?
No. Native code can be optimized for Apple silicon, while Apple says translated apps often have no noticeable difference in typical use. Neither statement is a benchmark for a particular game. Engine design, graphics settings, thermals, memory, and drivers still matter.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhy would I force Rosetta on a Universal game?
Forcing Rosetta can help test compatibility with an Intel-only plug-in or legacy component. It is a troubleshooting mode, not proof that the game is designed to run that way.
Why is the Rosetta checkbox missing?
The app may be Apple-silicon-only, Intel-only, or packaged without exposing that option. Use the Kind field first. The checkbox is relevant to Universal apps when Finder presents it.
Can a native game load an Intel mod?
Not generally within the same process. Apple’s architecture rules prevent arbitrary arm64 and x86_64 code from being mixed. Look for an Apple-silicon mod build, or test the complete Universal game under Rosetta if the developer supports that arrangement.
Will an Intel game keep working after macOS 27?
Do not assume so. Apple describes general Rosetta availability through macOS 27 and a narrower macOS 28 allowance for certain older, unmaintained games that rely on Intel frameworks. Check the current Apple guidance and the game developer’s notes before upgrading.

- Find the installed game’s own
.appbundle. - Open Get Info with
Command-I. - Record the Kind value: Apple silicon, Universal, or Intel.
- For Universal apps, check whether Open using Rosetta is enabled.
- Inspect launchers, helpers, plug-ins, anti-cheat, and mods separately when troubleshooting.
- Use a runtime process indicator only when you need to verify what is running at that moment.
- Check current Apple and developer guidance before relying on Rosetta after a macOS upgrade.
The practical answer is therefore straightforward: Apple-silicon and Universal labels identify a native-capable game, Intel identifies a Rosetta-dependent game, and the Universal-app checkbox tells you whether the native-capable title has been deliberately switched to translated execution. Compatibility still depends on the rest of the game’s software stack and on the macOS release you are using.

Frequently Asked Questions
How can I tell if a Mac game is native Apple silicon?
In Finder, select the game’s actual .app bundle, press Command-I, and read Kind. Application (Apple silicon) is native; Application (Universal) can run natively, subject to its launch setting.
What does Open using Rosetta mean?
For a Universal app, a checked box forces macOS to use the Intel slice through Rosetta. Clear it and relaunch to let macOS use the Apple-silicon slice.
Does checking the launcher tell me how the game runs?
No. The launcher and game are separate applications. Inspect the game’s own installed .app bundle.
Recommended Free Tools
Can a Universal game still fail because of a plug-in?
Yes. Helpers, anti-cheat, frameworks, mods, and plug-ins can have separate architecture requirements, and arm64 and x86_64 code cannot be mixed arbitrarily in one process.
Is Rosetta a separate program I open before gaming?
No. macOS invokes Rosetta automatically when an Intel app needs translation. An Intel-only game may prompt you to install it on first launch.
Does native execution guarantee better performance?
No. Architecture labels do not provide frame-rate guarantees. Performance depends on the game engine, graphics settings, thermals, memory, drivers, and other components.
What should I check before a macOS upgrade?
Review Apple’s current Rosetta policy and the developer’s notes for the exact game version, especially for Intel-only titles and games using older Intel frameworks.
The Bottom Line
Use Finder’s Get Info on the game itself: Apple silicon means native code, Universal means both native and Intel slices, and Intel means Rosetta translation on Apple silicon. For Universal builds, the Open using Rosetta checkbox reveals whether translation is being forced. Then verify helpers, plug-ins, anti-cheat components, and current macOS support before treating the label as a compatibility guarantee.
