Use two separate checks. Run spctl -vvv --assess --type exec "/path/to/Application.app" to see whether the app passes your Mac’s current Gatekeeper assessment. Then open Apple menu > System Settings > Privacy & Security to see and disable the app’s access to protected data and hardware. Gatekeeper acceptance and privacy permission are different decisions: an app can pass one and still have permissions you want to remove.
What “notarized” means on a Mac
Apple notarization is an automated service for software submitted by a developer. Apple’s Developer Documentation describes it this way: “The Apple notary service is an automated system that scans your software for malicious content, checks for code-signing issues, and returns the results to you quickly.” A successful submission receives a notarization ticket that macOS can use when evaluating the software.
Notarization is not App Review, a guarantee that an app is harmless, or a promise that the app will behave well after installation. It is also different from code signing. A developer signature helps identify who signed the app and lets the system detect changes made after signing. Notarization records that Apple scanned the submitted software and issued a ticket. You still need to consider where you downloaded the app, whether the download was altered, what the app does, and which permissions you grant it.

Run a Gatekeeper assessment with spctl
Apple documents spctl for assessing an app bundle against the system’s current security policies. Open Terminal and run:
spctl -vvv --assess --type exec "/path/to/Application.app"
Replace /path/to/Application.app with the actual path. Keep quotation marks when the path contains spaces. You can insert a path in Terminal by dragging the app from Finder into the Terminal window; check the resulting text before pressing Return.
How to read the result
The -vvv option requests verbose output. A successful assessment normally reports an accepted result and identifies the source of that decision. The exact text depends on the macOS release, the app, and the policies configured on the Mac.
Recommended Free Tools
- Accepted: the app meets the Gatekeeper rules that are in force on this Mac at the time of the command.
- Rejected or an error: the app does not satisfy the active assessment rules, or the path, bundle, signature, or other requirement could not be evaluated.
- Different results on different Macs: local security settings, configuration profiles, and work- or school-management restrictions can change what is accepted.
An accepted result should not be described as “Apple verified the app is safe.” It means the local policy assessment accepted the item. It does not replace checking the download source or using separate security controls.
Gatekeeper assessment versus an override
| Action | What it answers or changes | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
spctl -vvv --assess --type exec |
Reports whether the app is accepted under the Mac’s current Gatekeeper policies. | It is not an on-demand malware scan and does not establish that the software is harmless. |
| Open Anyway in Privacy & Security | Creates a user-approved exception after macOS has shown a warning and you confirm the app. | It does not turn the app into a notarized app or provide a safety guarantee. |
Do not use the override as your notarization test. It is a conscious decision to proceed despite a Gatekeeper warning.

What to do when macOS blocks the app
“Apple cannot check [app] for malicious software”
This alert means macOS could not complete its normal verification for that launch. Apple’s supported advice is to contact the developer or look for an updated or alternative app. If you are certain the app came from a trustworthy source and has not been tampered with, you can make a one-time decision to proceed:
- Attempt to open the app so macOS records the warning.
- Open Apple menu > System Settings > Privacy & Security.
- Scroll to the security section and select Open Anyway for the blocked app.
- Read the warning, then confirm only if you trust the source and accept the risk.
The app becomes an exception for later launches. This path is not a way to establish that the app is notarized; it is an override of the normal launch decision.

“The app developer cannot be verified”
Treat this alert as a trust decision, not a minor setup prompt. First seek a current version from the developer or another legitimate distribution channel. If you independently know the download is trustworthy and unchanged, use the same Open Anyway sequence above. If you do not know the source or cannot establish that the file is intact, do not bypass the warning.
Find and revoke an app’s privacy permissions
Gatekeeper controls whether macOS will allow an app to launch under its security policy. Privacy permissions control access to protected resources after launch. To remove an app’s access, use the current System Settings interface:
- Choose Apple menu > System Settings.
- Select Privacy & Security in the sidebar.
- Choose the category for the resource you want to protect.
- Find the app in the list and switch its access off. Authenticate if macOS asks for an administrator password, Touch ID, or another approval.
- Close System Settings. The change applies to future access attempts; an app that is already using a resource may need to be quit and reopened.
The categories shown depend on the resource and your macOS version. A managed Mac may hide controls or prevent changes, so the absence of a switch does not necessarily mean the app has no access.

Folder-specific access: Files & Folders
For access to locations such as user folders, open Privacy & Security > Files & Folders. Expand the app’s entry when macOS provides location-specific controls, then turn access on or off for the listed locations. This is more precise than removing every permission category: you can deny a particular folder while leaving an unrelated permission unchanged.
If the app is not listed, macOS may not have recorded a request for that resource, the app may be controlled by a configuration profile, or the relevant category may use a different interface on your release. Do not grant a broad permission merely to make the app appear; verify what the app actually needs first.
Use tccutil when you need a fresh permission prompt
macOS keeps privacy decisions in its Transparency, Consent, and Control system. Apple documents tccutil for clearing a remembered authorization. The per-app pattern is:
tccutil reset <service> <bundle-id>
For example, Apple documents:
tccutil reset Calendar com.example.company
Substitute the service name and the app’s real bundle identifier. The example identifier is illustrative; it is not a universal value for calendar software.
What a reset does
A successful reset removes the remembered decision for that service and app. The next time the app requests the resource, macOS should ask again. A reset is therefore useful when you want to test the permission flow, correct an accidental choice, or hand the decision back to the user.

Resetting is not the same as leaving access denied. If you want an ongoing denial, turn the relevant switch off in Privacy & Security when macOS exposes that control. Otherwise, the next request can present a prompt and the user could allow access.
Keep the scope narrow
| Goal | Recommended action | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Keep an app from using a protected resource | Turn that app’s access off in the relevant Privacy & Security category. | Access remains disabled until someone changes the setting. |
| Make one app ask again for one service | tccutil reset <service> <bundle-id> |
The remembered decision is cleared for that app and service. |
| Reset many apps or resources | Use a broad reset only when you deliberately want that scope. | Multiple saved decisions can be cleared, creating prompts for many apps. |
Apple also documents forms of tccutil that affect all apps or all resources. Avoid those broad forms for routine troubleshooting: they can create a large number of prompts and make it difficult to identify which app needed which permission.
Choosing the right method
Use System Settings when the goal is “deny this access”
The graphical control is the clearest choice when you want a lasting restriction. It lets you select the exact category and, for Files & Folders, the particular location. Record what you changed if the app is shared with other users or managed by an organization.
Use tccutil when the goal is “ask me again”
A reset is appropriate after choosing the wrong answer in a prompt or when you need to observe the app’s request again. It does not create a permanent block, and it does not grant access by itself.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteUse spctl when the goal is “what does Gatekeeper say now?”
Run the assessment against the exact app bundle you intend to open. If you moved, replaced, or updated the app, assess the new copy rather than relying on an earlier result. Interpret the output as a snapshot of the current Mac’s policy decision.

A complete, cautious workflow
- Confirm the source. Before changing any security control, identify where the app came from and whether the developer provides a current version.
- Assess the bundle. Run
spctl -vvv --assess --type exec "/path/to/Application.app"and save the output if you need to explain the result to support staff. - Respond to warnings deliberately. If macOS reports “Apple cannot check [app] for malicious software” or “the app developer cannot be verified,” prefer an updated or alternative app. Use Open Anyway only when you have independently established trust in the source and file.
- Review permissions separately. In Privacy & Security, inspect the categories relevant to what the app does, including Files & Folders for location-specific access.
- Remove unnecessary access. Switch off each permission you do not want the app to retain. Avoid changing unrelated categories.
- Reset only when a new prompt is desired. Run a narrowly scoped
tccutil resetwith the actual service and bundle ID, then reproduce the action that requests access. - Retest. Quit and reopen the app if necessary, confirm that the expected prompt or denial occurs, and check that the app still performs the functions you require.
Troubleshooting common results
spctl reports rejection but the app used to open
Re-run the command against the current app path. An update, replacement copy, changed signature, or changed local policy can produce a different result. If the Mac is managed, an administrator’s configuration may also be responsible. Do not infer notarization status solely from whether an older copy launched.
The Open Anyway button is missing
Try opening the app once so the warning is recorded, then return to System Settings > Privacy & Security. If the control still does not appear, the macOS release, account privileges, or a work- or school-management policy may restrict overrides. Contact the administrator or the developer rather than attempting to weaken security controls.
The app keeps asking after a reset
That is expected if the app requests the service again: the reset removed the saved decision. Choose the desired response in the prompt, or leave the permission switched off in Privacy & Security for an ongoing denial. Check that you reset the correct service and bundle ID; a reset for one service does not clear decisions for another.
The app still cannot access a folder
Review Privacy & Security > Files & Folders and the specific location listed under the app. The app may require a different protected-resource category, or an organizational policy may control the setting. Turning on an unrelated category will not solve a folder-specific denial.
Older macOS releases and managed Macs
On older systems, the equivalent controls are under System Preferences > Security & Privacy rather than System Settings > Privacy & Security. Names and category placement can vary by release. Follow the labels shown by your Mac instead of assuming that a missing category means the feature is unavailable.
Configuration profiles and other management policies can restrict Gatekeeper decisions and privacy controls. On a company- or school-owned Mac, an administrator may be the only person who can change a setting. Ask that administrator for the policy explanation before repeatedly resetting permissions or attempting overrides.
What these checks can—and cannot—tell you
- Notarization and Gatekeeper: Apple’s automated service scans submitted software for malicious content and code-signing issues;
spctlreports how the local Mac evaluates the app under current policy. - Code signing: A signature helps identify the signer and detect later alteration, but signing and notarization are separate properties.
- Privacy permissions: The Privacy & Security controls determine which protected resources an app may use; they do not certify the app’s origin or safety.
- Open Anyway: This is an exception after a warning, not evidence that notarization succeeded.
tccutil reset: This clears remembered consent so macOS can ask again; it is not a permanent denial.
Using the tools for their intended questions—spctl for the current Gatekeeper assessment, Privacy & Security for ongoing access decisions, and a narrowly scoped tccutil reset for a fresh prompt—keeps the security decision understandable and reversible.
