The only reliable way to know is to test your own laptop. Measure the same sustained workload with the laptop flat on a hard surface, raised on a stand with no fan, and placed on a cooling pad whose airflow reaches the laptop’s intake vents. Record temperatures, sustained clocks, workload performance, and noise under the same conditions. A pad that works well for one laptop can do little—or add noise without useful performance—for another because vent layout and pad design differ.

What a cooling-pad test should answer

A useful test separates three effects that are often mixed together:

  • Surface clearance: Raising the rear can give underside intake grilles more room to draw air.
  • Powered airflow: A pad fan may push additional air toward those grilles.
  • System response: Lower temperatures matter only if they produce steadier clocks, fewer thermal-limit events, better frame delivery, or another improvement you can measure.

Do not use a single idle-temperature screenshot as proof. A laptop’s fan curve, room temperature, background processes, power mode, and workload can change readings. The comparison has to be repeatable and sustained.

Inspect the laptop before choosing a pad

Map the intake and exhaust openings

Turn the laptop off and inspect its underside. Identify the perforated areas that draw air in and the openings at the rear, sides, or hinge that expel hot air. If the direction is unclear, check the laptop’s manual or an official manufacturer diagram. Some designs use small intake zones rather than a single large grille.

A cooling pad should direct air toward the intake areas while leaving every exhaust opening unobstructed. A claimed fit for a 15-inch, 16-inch, or 17-inch screen does not prove that its fans sit under the right grilles. Measure the position of the vents relative to the laptop’s edges and compare that with the pad’s fan zones, not just its platform dimensions.

Check physical stability

  • Confirm that the laptop’s feet sit securely on the pad’s stops or rubber surface.
  • Make sure the pad does not cover a side or rear exhaust when the screen is opened.
  • Check that the hinge angle and keyboard position remain comfortable at the pad’s intended height.
  • Look for cables, dust filters, or a front lip that could block a portion of the intake area.

If the pad’s fan is offset from the intake, test it anyway if the product allows fan-position adjustment. Do not assume that a larger fan compensates for poor alignment; the air may simply spill around the chassis.

Prepare a repeatable baseline

Use a workload that reproduces the heat problem

Choose one sustained task that represents your use: the same game scene and graphics settings, a benchmark loop, a long encode, or another repeatable CPU/GPU workload. Use the same application version and settings for every condition. A short burst can show boost behavior rather than the cooling limit you are trying to evaluate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the environment consistent

  • Place the laptop on the same hard, level surface for the baseline.
  • Use the normal power mode, charger, fan profile, and performance settings you normally use.
  • Close unnecessary background applications and prevent updates or scans from starting during a run.
  • Keep room conditions as stable as practical and note the ambient temperature if you can measure it.
  • Use the same warm-up period, run duration, and logging interval each time.

Let the machine reach a repeatable starting state before recording. If the battery state, charger connection, or operating-system power mode changes between runs, the comparison is no longer clean.

Record more than temperature

Log CPU temperature, GPU temperature, sustained CPU and GPU clocks, workload score or frame rate, and fan noise if it affects your decision. A sensor application that records a time series is preferable to manually reading one peak value. Note the maximum and the sustained value during the final part of the run.

Run the three-condition experiment

  1. Flat baseline: Put the laptop on the hard surface with its normal feet deployed. Warm it up, run the selected workload for the chosen interval, and save the temperature, clock, performance, and noise results.
  2. Elevation only: Raise the rear with a stable stand or other secure support. Leave the intakes and exhausts clear, use no powered fan, and repeat the same warm-up and workload. This isolates the benefit of extra clearance.
  3. Powered pad: Position the laptop so the pad’s active airflow reaches the actual intake grilles. Use the same power profile, workload, run length, and logging method. Record the pad’s speed setting and measure noise from the same location used for the other conditions.
  4. Repeat: Run each condition more than once when practical. If results vary, investigate background activity, room temperature, fan-control behavior, or inconsistent positioning before drawing a conclusion.

Do not change several variables at once. For example, switching to a more aggressive laptop performance mode at the same time as adding a pad can raise clocks and heat, hiding the pad’s effect.

Calculate the fan’s added benefit

Compare the elevation-only and powered-pad results directly. A simple isolation calculation is:

Use the same temperature definition on both sides—such as sustained CPU temperature during the final five minutes—not a peak from one run versus an average from another. A positive, repeatable difference suggests that powered airflow adds cooling beyond simply lifting the laptop. It is a comparison method, not a guarantee that every pad will produce a useful change.

Also compare the flat baseline with elevation alone. If raising the laptop delivers nearly all the improvement, a passive stand may be sufficient. If the powered pad lowers temperature further and stabilizes clocks without unacceptable noise, its fan is doing something the stand cannot.

Interpret temperature, performance, and noise together

Temperature

Look for a sustained change rather than one transient peak. A lower maximum with no improvement in the sustained portion may have little practical value. Conversely, a modest temperature change can matter if it prevents repeated thermal-limit events.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Clocks and throttling

Check whether CPU or GPU clocks remain higher or fluctuate less under the same workload. A cooler reading is not automatically a faster result: a laptop can reduce power and clocks while reporting a lower temperature.

Workload performance

Compare benchmark scores, completed-work time, average frame rate, and frame-time consistency where appropriate. WIRED author Luke Larsen summarized his own comparison by writing, “As I found in my testing, they can actually bring down temperatures and offer better performance.” That conclusion was tied to his tested laptop and setup, not a universal promise.

Noise

Measure from a consistent distance and record the laptop and pad together. A temperature reduction that requires an irritating fan speed may not be worthwhile for office work, recording, or a quiet room.

What published tests show—and what they do not

TechRadar, Josh Russell, 2026; Acer Predator Helios 300 with Nvidia RTX 3080 15-minute 3DMark Steel Nomad stress test; pads at maximum; thermal camera used to compare the hottest point Baseline temperature rise: 31.9°C. Rise with the Llano V10: 12°C. Rise with the Llano RGB Laptop Cooling Pad: 8°C. Shows that different pad designs can produce very different outcomes on one laptop. The figures are not guaranteed reductions for another machine.
WIRED, Luke Larsen; Razer Blade 16 3DMark Time Spy under no pad, Targus Chill Mat, Razer pad fan-off, Razer pad on, and Hyperboost conditions Maximum CPU temperature: 85°C, 85°C, 86°C, 77°C, and 75°C respectively. Benchmark scores also changed across conditions. Shows why a basic fan mat and a powered cooler designed to align with a chassis should not be treated as interchangeable.
Notebookcheck, 2020; MSI GP65 with a Havit cooler pad The Witcher 3; average temperatures and combined fan noise compared with no pad Average CPU: 92°C without, 80°C with. Average GPU: 76°C without, 70°C with. Combined noise: 53.9 to 59.2 dB(A). Illustrates a possible cooling/noise trade-off. It is an older, single-laptop test, not a current product ranking.

The TechRadar test also reported inconsistent results when the Klim Mistral was retested. That variation reinforces the importance of repeat runs and careful positioning.

How vent alignment changes the outcome

A pad can only help effectively when its airflow reaches a place where the laptop draws air. If the laptop’s intake is a narrow strip near the rear while the pad’s fan sits in the middle, much of the airflow may miss the opening. If the laptop draws through several separated grilles, a pad with adjustable fan zones or a broad airflow area may align better than a single fixed fan.

Exhaust clearance is equally important. A pad that lifts the rear but presses against a side exhaust can trap hot air or recirculate it. Check the laptop in its normal open-screen position, because the screen hinge and rear exhaust path can change when the chassis is tilted.

When comparing products, document the laptop model, vent locations, pad fan positions, fan speed, and whether the pad has a sealed or open airflow path. “Fits up to 17 inches” is a dimensional statement, not evidence of thermal compatibility.

When a stand is enough

If the elevation-only run lowers sustained temperatures, keeps clocks stable, and meets your performance target, there may be no reason to add a powered fan. A stand has fewer moving parts and can avoid the extra noise measured in some cooler-pad tests.

A powered pad is more defensible when:

  • the aligned fan produces a repeatable improvement beyond elevation;
  • the laptop remains near a thermal limit during your normal sustained workload;
  • clocks, frame delivery, or completion time improve at the same power settings; and
  • the added noise and desk space are acceptable.

Do not buy a fan merely because the laptop feels warm. Surface temperature, internal sensor temperature, and performance limits are different measurements.

Common testing mistakes and fixes

Comparing idle with load

A practical results log

Use one row per run. The following fields are enough to expose most confounding variables:

Field What to record
Condition Flat, elevation only, or powered pad; include the pad model and fan setting.
Environment Room temperature if available, surface, charger state, and laptop power profile.
Workload Application, version, scene or benchmark, graphics/quality settings, and run duration.
Temperatures CPU and GPU sustained values plus maximum values, using the same sensor source.
Performance Sustained clocks, benchmark score, frame rate or frame-time result, and thermal-limit events.
Noise Combined laptop-and-pad reading, measured from the same position and at the same time in the run.
Notes Vent alignment, unusual fan behavior, background activity, or a run that must be discarded.

Discard and repeat a run when a download starts, the charger disconnects, the laptop changes power mode, or the workload fails to follow the same sequence. A smaller set of clean runs is more useful than a large set of inconsistent ones.

How to make a buying decision after testing

  1. Confirm the problem: Identify whether your sustained workload actually reaches a temperature, clock, or performance limit.
  2. Try clearance first: Run the elevation-only condition and keep the result as your passive reference.
  3. Shortlist by airflow: Reject pads whose fans cannot reach the intake grilles or whose frame blocks exhausts.
  4. Compare powered airflow: Test the pad at the speed you would tolerate in normal use, not only at its loudest setting.
  5. Judge the trade-off: Keep the pad only if the repeatable thermal or performance benefit justifies its noise, size, cables, and cost.
  6. Check return terms: Because compatibility depends on your specific chassis, retain the ability to return a pad that fails the alignment or repeatability test.

There is no reliable published statistic for the percentage of all laptop owners who benefit from cooling pads. The available tests instead show a spread of outcomes across individual laptops and designs. Treat any advertised temperature number as a product-specific claim that still needs validation on your machine.

What the evidence supports

TechRadar’s 2026 test, WIRED’s Razer Blade 16 comparison, and Notebookcheck’s 2020 MSI GP65 example all show that cooling pads can lower temperatures in some setups, while their methods and outcomes differ. The Notebookcheck result also demonstrates that lower temperatures can come with higher combined noise. HAVIT’s guide, updated October 10, 2026, recommends separating elevation from fan airflow and tracking clocks, throttling, performance, and noise; its illustrative scenario is modeled rather than a laboratory measurement of a HAVIT product.
