Before installing a Humble Choice game, check what storefront the key uses, read Valve’s Steam Deck compatibility notes, and compare recent Steam Deck reports on ProtonDB. If those sources leave important questions unanswered—especially about an external launcher, controls, or sustained performance—a short, documented test is the best way to decide whether it runs well for you.
First, confirm what Humble supplied
Open the game’s Humble redemption page or key details and check which storefront the key is for, along with any third-party account or launcher requirement. A Humble Choice game is not necessarily a Steam key, so a Steam Deck rating or ProtonDB result may not describe the version you received if it launches somewhere else.
For example, a community roundup of May 2026 Humble Choice games described a Battle.net key for Diablo IV and user-reported setup friction and variable performance. Those are observations about that key and those users’ experiences—not a guarantee about another month, storefront, Deck, or game update. Read the May 2026 community roundup.
Check Valve’s Steam Deck rating and notes
Find the store or library entry
Search for the exact game in the Steam Store or in your Steam Deck library. Valve displays compatibility ratings and details for games it has reviewed; library views can also be filtered by rating. Read the notes attached to the label rather than relying on its color or icon. Valve’s Deck Verified page explains the program, and Steam Support’s Steam Deck software information describes where to find compatibility information and settings.

What each label means
- Verified: Valve says the game works great on Steam Deck right out of the box, according to its compatibility criteria.
- Playable: The game may require some manual tweaking. Check the specific note: it could involve choosing a controller layout or using touch input in a launcher, rather than a rendering or frame-rate problem.
- Unsupported: Valve currently considers the game nonfunctional on Deck. Treat this as a significant warning, while recognizing that the classification can change as games and Deck software change.
- Unknown: Valve has not checked the game. This is missing certification, not evidence that the game either works or fails.
A Verified badge is useful, but it is not a performance benchmark. Valve’s four criteria cover input, display, seamlessness, and system support, including Proton and middleware. They do not publish a game-specific frame rate or promise that it will meet your preferred performance target. Valve also says the review process is ongoing as new games and updates appear. Compare recent ProtonDB reports
ProtonDB collects community reports about games running on Linux and Steam Deck with Proton. Its reports can help answer practical questions a Valve label may not: whether a launcher completes setup, which compatibility tool worked, what settings people used, and whether performance stayed acceptable beyond the opening screen. ProtonDB’s community ratings are not Valve certification.

Search by the exact title, then favor reports that identify their conditions. A detailed report describing the Deck model, SteamOS or game version, Proton version, settings, launch steps, and observed behavior is more useful than an unsupported claim that a game is “playable.” Compare like with like rather than averaging reports that involve different storefronts, launchers, or configurations.

Valve says reviewed compatibility ratings apply to both LCD and OLED models, but updates can still affect the experience.
- Storefront and launch method: Distinguish a Steam installation from a key that requires another storefront or account. Launcher steps can be the main obstacle even when the game itself renders correctly.
- Compatibility path: Look for whether the game uses a native Linux build or Proton, and which Proton version or workaround the player reports.
- What “runs” means: Separate reaching the main menu from a stable play session. Look for concrete observations about frame pacing, controls, text legibility, crashes, and whether keyboard, touchscreen, or a community controller layout was needed.
Do not infer battery life or heat from a reported frame rate. Treat those as measured observations only when a report actually provides them.

Make a short test when the evidence is inconclusive
Test the exact version and launch path you intend to use. If the game is Unknown, reports conflict, or an external launcher or anti-cheat is involved, a test can expose problems that a rating or brief community post cannot. Steam Support describes selecting a compatibility tool from a game’s Properties > Compatibility settings. See Steam Support’s instructions and troubleshooting information.
- Record the setup: Write down the storefront, Deck model, SteamOS version, game version if shown, compatibility tool, and graphics settings. Valve provides information about SteamOS.
- Check the full launch flow: Start from the library and note whether the game launches directly or requires account sign-in, launcher updates, keyboard input, or touchscreen interaction.
- Test the parts that matter to you: Confirm controls, text readability, and any required menus or multiplayer features. Play long enough to see whether performance remains steady; reaching the main menu alone does not establish that a game runs well.
- Note stability and performance: Record crashes, stutters, frame-rate stability, and any settings or workaround needed. Do not describe a result as universal: report it as, for example, “on SteamOS version X, with Proton Y and these settings.”
- Compare carefully: Match your result against reports with similar hardware, storefront, software versions, and settings. If those conditions differ, the reports may explain the difference rather than contradict one another.
Decide whether the game runs well for your use
“Runs well” depends on what you need from the game. A title may launch and render correctly but still be inconvenient because its launcher needs touchscreen input, its text is difficult to read, its controls need remapping, or performance is inconsistent during play. Use Valve’s rating for a quick compatibility signal, ProtonDB for reported real-world conditions, and your own test for the specific setup you plan to use.

Compatibility can change as Valve updates the Deck and developers update games. Treat ratings and community reports as evidence tied to their date and conditions, not a permanent guarantee. Valve notes that its compatibility review is ongoing because games and updates continue to arrive. Check Valve’s current compatibility guidance.
