The reliable way to check a hardware wallet is to combine the exact model’s official setup software, its signed-firmware or hardware-authentication result, and a careful inspection for tampering. A clean-looking box is not enough. Download the manufacturer’s software from its official channel, initialize the device yourself, and stop immediately if it arrives with a recovery phrase, PIN, installed firmware that should not be present, a failed signature check, or a damaged model-specific seal.
These checks reduce specific counterfeit and tampering risks, but they cannot prove that a device’s entire supply chain was untouched. The procedure differs by model: Ledger uses a Secure Element challenge, Trezor documents bootloader signatures and model-specific hardware checks, and COLDCARD shows a startup warning state. Follow the instructions for your exact device rather than applying one brand’s checklist to another.
What “genuine” can and cannot mean
A hardware wallet can be genuine in one sense and still have an unresolved risk in another. Verification normally covers several separate questions:
- Is the software authentic? The wallet should accept only firmware signed by the manufacturer, and the official companion application should be the unmodified release.
- Is the security hardware authentic? Some devices use a cryptographic check involving a factory-provisioned Secure Element or another security chip.
- Was the package tampered with? Seals, labels, and the contents can reveal obvious interference, but packaging is only evidence, not a cryptographic guarantee.
- Was the supply chain untouched? A successful device check generally cannot reconstruct every event between factory, reseller, and delivery.
Keep those questions separate. A firmware signature proves that the code was signed by the expected manufacturer; it does not by itself prove that the casing was never opened. Conversely, an intact seal does not prove that the firmware is authentic.

Before you connect the wallet
Confirm the exact model
Write down the model name and revision printed on the device and its packaging. Similar products from one manufacturer can use different seals, setup screens, chips, and authenticity procedures. Open the support page for that exact model and note which application, cable, firmware behavior, and first-connection checks it specifies.
Use only official software
Obtain the manufacturer’s wallet application from its official website or the official mobile-app store listing. Do not install an application supplied by a marketplace seller, a QR code in the box, an unsolicited message, or a support account on social media. Ledger specifically warns that a counterfeit device can be paired with a modified application that falsely reports the device as genuine.
Record the condition without “testing” the seed
Photograph the package and seals before opening it if you need an evidence trail. Do not power the device merely to see whether it contains a wallet. A new wallet should be initialized by you, with a new recovery phrase generated on the device. Never use a phrase printed on a card or included in a box.

How firmware-signature verification works
Manufacturers sign approved firmware with a private signing key. The wallet’s bootloader or startup code contains the corresponding verification key and rejects, or visibly warns about, code that does not match. This is stronger evidence than a logo, hologram, or serial-number lookup because it tests the code that will run on the device.
What a passing check tells you
A passing signature check indicates that the firmware accepted by the device was signed by the expected manufacturer. Trezor says its bootloader checks the firmware signature each time the wallet is connected, and Trezor Suite warns when the signature is invalid. COLDCARD states that it verifies factory-signed firmware and flash contents during startup.
What it does not tell you
Signature verification does not establish that the enclosure was never opened or that every component is original. It also does not make an unofficial computer or phone safe; the host can still display misleading instructions or steal a recovery phrase that you type into it. Keep the phrase on the device’s screen and enter it only when the device itself instructs you to do so.

Model-specific verification procedures
Ledger devices
- Install the official wallet application. Download Ledger Wallet from Ledger’s official website or an official mobile-app store. Ignore links supplied by a seller or an unsolicited message.
- Initialize the device yourself. Choose the option to set up a new device. Do not restore from a phrase that arrived with the package.
- Run Genuine Check during initialization. Ledger describes the process as a challenge signed by the device’s factory-provisioned Secure Element and checked by the application and Ledger’s service.
- Interpret a failure as a stop condition. Do not create accounts, enter a PIN, or transfer funds if the application reports that the check failed. Capture the error and contact Ledger support through its official channel.
- Keep the limitation in mind. Ledger’s own threat model says, “a Genuine check cannot detect unauthorized physical modifications to the hardware, such as spying implants, if the original Secure Element remains intact.” A passing result authenticates that security element; it is not a complete physical supply-chain audit.
If a new Ledger arrives with a recovery phrase, a PIN, or an already-onboarded account, do not use those credentials and do not move assets to the device. A legitimate setup generates the phrase on the wallet during your initialization.

- Inspect the USB-C holographic seal before setup. Trezor says the seal should be clean, firmly attached, and free of tears or adhesive residue. A missing or damaged seal is a reason to pause and contact support, not a reason to attempt a “test” transaction.
- Install Trezor Suite from Trezor’s official distribution channel. Use the application to install the signed firmware during first setup. Blank backup cards should remain blank until the device generates a phrase for you.
- Observe the first-connection authenticity check. Trezor documents an authentication check in which the Secure Element participates with the device’s other chip. This is a Safe 5 procedure; do not assume another Trezor model has the same check.
- Watch the firmware result. The bootloader checks the firmware signature whenever the device connects. Trezor Suite should warn if the signature is invalid or unofficial firmware is detected.
Trezor’s Safe 5 authentication guide states: “Each time you connect your Trezor, the bootloader checks the firmware signature.” Treat any warning as a stop condition and preserve the exact message for support.
Trezor Model One
- Check that the device is supplied without firmware. Trezor documents the Model One as receiving firmware during setup. If setup finds firmware already installed on a new device, do not use it.
- Install firmware through Trezor Suite. The application accepts firmware signed by SatoshiLabs, and the device warns if unofficial firmware is present.
- Evaluate the seal in context. Trezor has documented packaging changes, and older seal designs can still appear in reseller stock. The important warning is a seal that is not intact on delivery, not whether the seal matches a particular photograph from a previous product revision.
- Create a new wallet on the device. Do not enter a supplied phrase, and do not connect funds until the setup and signature checks complete without warnings.
COLDCARD
- Power on the exact COLDCARD model according to its current instructions. Do not generalize the indicator sequence to another wallet brand or model.
- Wait through the startup verification. COLDCARD says it checks firmware signatures and flash memory on power-up. During the process, the red CAUTION indicator is lit.
- Proceed only after the expected result. After successful checks, the green GENUINE indicator signals that it is safe to enter a PIN.
- Stop if the warning remains. COLDCARD states, “If the firmware is not factory-signed, the red CAUTION LED stays lit as a warning not to enter your PIN.” Do not enter the PIN; consult current manufacturer support.
Packaging and physical tamper evidence
Packaging is a screening step. Look for a missing, lifted, cut, re-glued, or residue-covered seal; mismatched labels; unexplained scratches around screws or ports; and accessories that differ from the exact model’s official contents. Photograph anything unusual before contacting the seller or manufacturer.

Do not turn a packaging check into a universal rule. Seal designs change, and legitimate reseller inventory can contain older packaging. Trezor’s Model One guidance specifically notes that older seals may still be encountered. The useful question is whether the model’s documented seal was intact when you received it, not whether the box resembles the newest product photograph.
An intact package is not proof of an untouched supply chain. A determined attacker might replace packaging, and some physical modifications can leave no visible trace. Use packaging evidence to decide whether to pause, then rely on the model’s cryptographic and firmware checks.

- Never use a prewritten phrase. If words arrive with a new Ledger, Trezor, COLDCARD, or another wallet, assume anyone who handled the package may know them. Do not transfer assets to that wallet.
- Never type the phrase into a phone, computer, browser, app, form, or website. Ledger says the phrase should never be entered in an app, phone, computer, or website. Trezor says not to enter the seed anywhere unless the Trezor device itself prompts you.
- Generate the phrase on the wallet. Let the device display the words, write them on the supplied blank card, and verify them using the device’s confirmation process.
- Do not disclose the PIN. A seller, support agent, or web page has no legitimate reason to ask for it. If a device arrives already unlocked or with a PIN supplied, stop using it.
- Do not “verify” by sending a small amount first. A test transfer does not make a compromised phrase safe and can put real funds at risk.
How the verification approaches differ
| Approach | What it checks | Examples documented by manufacturers | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Signed-firmware verification | Whether the bootloader or startup code accepts manufacturer-signed firmware | Trezor bootloader checks on connection; COLDCARD verifies firmware and flash at startup | Does not prove the enclosure or every physical component is untouched |
| Hardware-backed authenticity | Whether a security chip can answer a cryptographic challenge or participate in an authentication protocol | Ledger Genuine Check uses a factory-provisioned Secure Element; Trezor Safe 5 documents a check involving both chips | Scope is model-specific; Ledger says the check cannot detect some unauthorized modifications if the original Secure Element remains intact |
| Packaging and seals | Visible signs that a package or device was opened before delivery | Trezor Safe 5 USB-C holographic seal; Model One seal guidance | Legitimate packaging varies, and intact packaging cannot certify the whole supply chain |
| Official host software | Whether setup and status messages come from the manufacturer’s intended application | Ledger Wallet and Trezor Suite setup flows | A counterfeit app can lie, so obtain it independently from the official channel |
| Startup indicators | Whether the device signals a successful internal check before PIN entry | COLDCARD red CAUTION followed by green GENUINE | The indicator scheme applies only to the specified model and current manufacturer instructions |
When to stop and contact the manufacturer

- The model-specific seal is missing, torn, lifted, or visibly altered on arrival.
- A new Trezor Model One reports that firmware was already installed before first setup.
- The official application or the device reports an authenticity, signature, or hardware-check error.
- A new wallet includes a recovery phrase or PIN, or anyone asks you to type the phrase into a phone, computer, application, or website.
- A COLDCARD remains in the red CAUTION state instead of reaching the expected green GENUINE state.
- The seller pressures you to bypass a warning, install a supplied application, or keep a device that failed verification.
Keep the receipt, seller details, photographs, serial information, and screenshots of warnings. Do not attempt to open, modify, reflash, or “repair” the device before support gives instructions; those actions can destroy evidence and create additional risk.
Buying and supply-chain decisions
Buying direct from the manufacturer or through an authorized reseller improves sourcing assurance. Trezor recommends an authorized official reseller because it cannot guarantee authenticity for devices bought through an unauthorized reseller. Ledger similarly recommends buying direct or through an authorized reseller while explaining that even a genuine check cannot establish the device’s complete physical supply-chain history.
Source assurance is not a substitute for verification after delivery. Initialize the wallet yourself, run the exact model’s checks, and generate a new phrase even when the seller is authorized. Conversely, a device from an unauthorized source should not be “rescued” merely because its packaging looks perfect; return or escalate it if any model-specific check fails.
A practical decision checklist
- Identify the exact model and read its current official setup instructions.
- Obtain the official companion application independently of the seller.
- Inspect the box, seal, device, and included cards before entering any credentials.
- Reject any prewritten recovery phrase, supplied PIN, or preconfigured wallet.
- Install or verify firmware through the official setup flow.
- Complete the model’s hardware-authentication or Genuine Check when available.
- Confirm that the bootloader or startup indicator reports a valid signature.
- Generate and record a new recovery phrase on the device, never on the host computer.
- Stop and contact support for any warning instead of attempting a transaction to “see if it works.”
The strongest practical conclusion is deliberately limited: official software plus a successful, model-specific firmware and hardware check is meaningful evidence that the device is running approved code and, where documented, contains authentic security hardware. It is not a certificate that no one ever opened the device or altered another part of the supply chain. Treat packaging as a warning screen, protect the recovery phrase as the wallet itself, and let the exact manufacturer procedure—not appearance or a seller’s assurance—decide whether setup should continue.
