The reliable way to identify a hard drive’s recording method is to read its complete model number and capacity, then verify that exact combination in the manufacturer’s current product page, data sheet, or manual. Look for a field labeled Recording Technology, Recording method, CMR, or SMR. Brand name, product family, enclosure capacity, and write speed are not sufficient evidence.
This matters because one family can contain both technologies. Western Digital, for example, says its Red range includes both CMR and SMR models. A “WD Red” label therefore cannot answer the question without the full model and capacity.
The fastest dependable method
- Record the exact drive model and capacity. Use the label, operating-system storage details, firmware/BIOS, or the manufacturer’s utility.
- Search the manufacturer’s official documentation for that complete model number. Match the capacity and variant, not merely the family name.
- Open the data sheet or manual and find “Recording Technology” or “Recording method.”
- Classify the drive only when the official source identifies that exact model. If it does not, report the method as unknown or unverified rather than guessing.
No universal Windows, macOS, Linux, or SMART field has been established that directly and reliably reports CMR or SMR for every hard drive. Operating-system tools are useful for finding the model; the manufacturer’s model-specific documentation is what confirms the recording method.
Why the exact model and capacity matter
CMR and SMR describe how a particular disk records data. They are not properties that can safely be inferred from a logo, a color, a retail family, or a nominal capacity. Manufacturers can change the recording method between generations, capacities, interfaces, and regional variants while retaining a familiar product name.

Western Digital’s own guidance illustrates the problem: its Red family contains both CMR and SMR products and directs users to the individual Red, Red Plus, and Red Pro data sheets. “Red” is therefore a family label, not a recording-method answer.
Capacity is part of the identifier because two capacities sold under one family can use different designs. A model number without its capacity may still be ambiguous when a manufacturer lists several variants or when an operating system truncates the identifier.
Step 1: Find the complete drive identifier
Read the physical label
For an accessible internal disk, shut the computer down, disconnect power, and read the manufacturer label. Record every character in the model number, the stated capacity, and—when shown—the interface or variant. A single missing character can point you to a different specification sheet.

The serial identifies one individual unit; the model number identifies the design for which the manufacturer publishes specifications.
Windows
Windows can expose the model even when the drive is hidden behind a volume name. Useful places include:
- Device Manager: open Disk drives and copy the complete device name from the drive’s Properties window.
- Disk Management: right-click the Start button, choose Disk Management, and match the physical disk to its capacity before checking its device properties.
- Settings: open Settings > System > Storage > Advanced storage settings > Disks & volumes where that page exposes the model on the Windows edition and storage connection in use.
These screens identify the device; they do not prove CMR or SMR. USB bridges sometimes return an enclosure or bridge name instead of the disk’s native model.

macOS
Open Apple menu > About This Mac > More Info > System Report, then inspect Hardware > Storage or the relevant USB/SATA section. Copy the model identifier and capacity exactly. Disk Utility may show a shortened or friendly name, so use System Information when the two displays differ.

Linux
Graphical disk utilities generally show a model and size. From a terminal, a command such as lsblk -o NAME,MODEL,SIZE,TRAN can help map a device name to its model, size, and transport. On systems that expose it, udevadm info or the drive’s hardware-information utility can provide additional identifying fields.
Linux tools vary by distribution, permissions, controller, and USB bridge. Treat their output as an identification aid, not a CMR/SMR verdict. If the model is blank or generic, check the physical label, firmware setup, or the enclosure manufacturer.
Firmware or BIOS/UEFI
Storage information in BIOS or UEFI may show a model number, but some firmware displays only capacity. Western Digital notes that BIOS can provide an identifier when available; it is not guaranteed to reveal the full model. Use it as another way to locate the identifier, not as a classification tool.
Step 2: Verify the model in official documentation
- Search the manufacturer’s support or product site for the complete model number, including capacity where the site distinguishes it.
- Open the result that is a data sheet, specification page, or manual rather than relying on a retailer listing or forum table.
- Confirm the interface and variant match your disk. A SATA model and a USB-integrated model may have different identifiers and specifications.
- Use the document’s find function for Recording Technology, Recording method, CMR, and SMR.
- Save or print the relevant specification with the model and capacity visible. This prevents a later revision of a family page from being mistaken for the specification of your drive.
Manufacturers do not all use the same heading. One document may state “CMR,” another “SMR,” and another describe the method in a technical table. Toshiba product material and Seagate manuals demonstrate that the recording method can be stated explicitly, but the wording and document location differ by product.

External USB drives need a separate check
An external-drive enclosure usually tells you the enclosure’s retail name and capacity, not the exact hard disk inside. Western Digital states that the internal model and recording technology may vary and cautions that model, technology, interface, power use, rotation speed, and cache size are not guaranteed by the enclosure name.
First connect the enclosure and see whether the operating system passes through the disk’s native model. If it reports only a generic USB-storage name, the software path cannot establish CMR or SMR. Check the enclosure’s documentation for a precise internal model only if the manufacturer actually guarantees one; do not infer it from the capacity printed on the box.
Opening a single-drive enclosure may void its warranty. Western Digital specifically warns about this, so physical disassembly should be a last resort after checking warranty terms and the manufacturer’s support information. If the internal model still cannot be established, describe the drive as unverified rather than assuming the technology.
What CMR and SMR mean
CMR
CMR, or conventional magnetic recording, writes tracks without the deliberate overlap used by SMR. The term is commonly associated with PMR in consumer specifications, but a PMR label alone should not replace a model-specific confirmation. Use the terminology and scope in the manufacturer’s own document.
SMR
Shingled magnetic recording increases areal density by overlapping neighboring data tracks. Toshiba explains that “SMR increases storage density by working with overlapping data tracks.” When a track is rewritten, data in an overlapping track may also need to be read and rewritten. Toshiba notes that this can cause fluctuations in write speed and that caches and caching algorithms help manage the effect.
The mechanism explains why some SMR workloads show uneven sustained writes; it does not mean every SMR disk behaves identically. Cache size, workload pattern, free space, controller behavior, drive condition, and firmware all influence observed performance.

Why a speed test cannot identify SMR
A long or erratic write can result from many causes, including a full or fragmented disk, thermal throttling, a USB bridge, a slow host, background synchronization, bad sectors, a depleted cache, or a failing drive. Conversely, an SMR disk can write smoothly during a short test while its cache absorbs the workload.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Because of those variables, no reviewed manufacturer source validates a benchmark as a definitive CMR/SMR classifier. Use performance testing to troubleshoot a workload after the model is known, not to label the recording method. A slow test is a reason to investigate—not proof that the disk is SMR.
What software and SMART data can—and cannot—tell you
SMART utilities can report health attributes, temperature, power-on hours, error counts, and other device data. The available material does not establish a universal SMART attribute for recording method. Some specialized tools may display a vendor-specific field on particular devices, but that output should be treated as a lead and checked against the exact manufacturer specification.
Likewise, a generic operating-system command that prints model, sector size, cache, or interface information does not automatically disclose CMR or SMR. If an application labels a disk, verify how it derived the label and whether it supports your exact model before relying on it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When the official source is silent
Mark the drive as unknown or unverified when the manufacturer’s current documentation does not explicitly identify the exact model and capacity. That is a technically correct result, not a failure.

Choosing between a confirmed CMR and SMR disk
The recording method is one part of a deployment decision. Also check interface compatibility, host limitations, warranty status, workload, and the manufacturer’s current specifications.
| Workload or decision | What to check | How to use the CMR/SMR information |
|---|---|---|
| Large sequential archives or mostly read-only storage | Capacity, interface, reliability requirements, and backup plan | Either method may be suitable if the documented workload and support conditions fit; do not infer suitability from family name. |
| Sustained or repeated writes | Documented recording method, cache behavior, controller compatibility, and expected duty cycle | Compare confirmed models rather than diagnosing from a benchmark. |
| NAS or array deployment | Exact model, firmware support, vibration/environment requirements, and vendor compatibility guidance | Use the model-specific method and workload guidance; a family-level label is insufficient. |
| Replacing an unknown used disk | Full identifier, health data, warranty, and provenance | Do not assume the replacement matches the old disk’s method unless both are documented. |
There is no universal performance ranking in the available manufacturer material. CMR is not automatically the right choice for every use, and SMR is not automatically defective. The practical requirement is to match a documented design to the workload and support conditions you actually have.
Troubleshooting an ambiguous identification
The operating system shows only a capacity
Check the physical label, BIOS/UEFI, another controller, or the manufacturer’s utility. If none reveals a complete model, the recording method cannot be confirmed from capacity alone.
The model appears truncated
Copy the identifier from a hardware-information view rather than a volume label, and compare it with the characters printed on the drive. Search only after you have resolved the missing suffix or capacity variant.
A USB enclosure reports a bridge name
Try the enclosure’s manufacturer documentation and a different connection path that may pass through the disk’s native identity. If the internal model remains undisclosed, do not open the enclosure solely to guess; check warranty implications and leave the method unverified.
Two sources disagree
Prefer the current official data sheet or manual whose model list and capacity match your drive. Check document revision dates and firmware or regional qualifiers. If the conflict remains, ask the manufacturer for a written clarification and record the uncertainty in your inventory.
A retailer listing says “CMR” or “SMR” but the manufacturer does not
Treat the retailer claim as unconfirmed. Retail listings can merge generations or capacities. Purchase or deployment decisions should use the manufacturer’s exact model documentation.

Checklist before you label a disk
- Full model number copied character-for-character.
- Capacity recorded in the same unit and variant used by the specification.
- Interface and form factor matched.
- Official data sheet, manual, or product page identified.
- “Recording Technology” or “Recording method” explicitly states CMR or SMR.
- External enclosure assumptions excluded unless the internal model is guaranteed.
- No speed test or generic SMART field used as the sole evidence.
- Unresolved cases labeled unknown or unverified.
Bottom line for a CMR/SMR check
Model first, documentation second: identify the complete drive model and capacity, then read the manufacturer’s model-specific recording-method specification. WD Blue examples show that even one family can contain a CMR 500 GB model and an SMR 2 TB model, while WD Red documentation confirms that both methods exist across that family. If an external enclosure, operating-system screen, SMART utility, or speed test does not reveal a manufacturer-confirmed match, the accurate answer is “unverified,” not a guess.
