If you see a S.M.A.R.T. warning, copy important files to a separate device as soon as possible—even if the computer still seems to work. Back up accessible data before running scans or repair tools. Then check the drive with its manufacturer’s diagnostic and use the result, alongside any ongoing symptoms, to decide whether to replace it or seek recovery help.
1. Identify the warning signs
Note the exact message, whether the drive is internal or external, whether files are still readable, and whether any unusual noise is coming from the drive itself. A S.M.A.R.T. warning can appear while a drive still functions normally; it is an early warning, not proof that the drive has already stopped working.
Slow reads, detection problems, boot failures, and abnormal noises can also indicate trouble, but they do not by themselves prove the hard drive is the cause. With an external drive, check that the cable and connection are secure. If the computer still cannot detect the drive, use the manufacturer’s troubleshooting guidance and diagnostic rather than assuming a particular component has failed.
Seagate advises that a S.M.A.R.T. error means you should back up data as soon as possible. Seagate: My system reported a S.M.A.R.T. error on the drive

- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
2. Back up accessible files before diagnosis
If you can read the drive, copy the files you cannot afford to lose to another physical device or an established backup destination. Keep that copy separate from the suspect drive. Start with the most important files; an unstable drive may become harder to read during a long copy.

Do not make a repair scan your first step if you have no backup. Seagate’s guidance for external drives says to back up before running Check Disk and before diagnostic options that fix items. A scan or repair action is not a substitute for a backup.

If the drive repeatedly clicks, grinds, disappears, or fails reads while valuable files remain on it, avoid repeated attempts to copy, scan, or repair it. Seagate specifically warns that continued operation of a grinding drive can make recovery more difficult and advises powering it down. For irreplaceable data or an inaccessible drive, seek qualified recovery guidance instead of experimenting.

3. Check the drive with its manufacturer’s diagnostic
Use the diagnostic supported by the maker and model of the drive. Seagate identifies SeaTools as its standard for determining whether a Seagate drive is in working order. For a WD drive, consult WD’s S.M.A.R.T. guidance and use the diagnostic utility supported for that model.
Run diagnostics only after protecting accessible files. If a tool offers a quick check and a longer test, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for your model; do not choose an option that writes fixes to the drive before backing it up.

A diagnostic PASS does not necessarily cancel a S.M.A.R.T. warning. Seagate notes that a drive can have a S.M.A.R.T. error even when its diagnostic tests pass. Treat the warning and symptoms as relevant, and follow the maker’s guidance rather than relying on a generic symptom list.

4. Interpret S.M.A.R.T. results cautiously
S.M.A.R.T. monitoring can flag possible trouble, but it is not a countdown to failure. Raw readings and thresholds are defined by manufacturers, so a particular raw number does not have a universal meaning or predict a fixed amount of remaining life.

WD’s SATA attribute list includes reallocated-sector count, current pending-sector count, and offline uncorrectable-sector count. These names can help explain what a tool reports, but interpret the values using documentation for the actual drive rather than applying a universal threshold. WD: SATA S.M.A.R.T. attribute list
A failed S.M.A.R.T. status, a manufacturer’s diagnostic FAIL, or serious symptoms that continue after checking connections are reasons to plan for replacement once data is backed up. Seagate says there is no method to repair the underlying drive problem behind a failed S.M.A.R.T. condition; software cannot repair mechanical damage.

When the data is backed up
If the manufacturer’s diagnostic reports FAIL, Seagate advises ensuring a complete backup and replacing the drive. Before buying a replacement, check your computer’s physical drive size, interface, supported capacity, and whether it accepts an HDD or SSD. Compatibility varies by computer, so confirm those details for your specific system.
