Have your child try on the romper in the intended size and move naturally: walk, sit, squat, reach, and bend. Watch for fabric pulling, riding up, slipping straps, gaping closures, or openings and seams that dig in or rub. Ask how it feels, then check the stitching, fasteners, and decorations for loose threads or parts that could come off. These are practical caregiver checks—not a standardized comfort test or a guarantee that a garment is safe.
Check fit while she moves
A romper can look fine while standing and become uncomfortable when a child sits, squats, reaches, or runs. Try the garment on in the size she would wear for play, then observe it through ordinary movements.
- Look for persistent pulling across the shoulders, chest, seat, or crotch.
- Check whether the garment rides up, straps slip, or closures gape when she bends or reaches.
- Notice whether leg openings, elastic, or straps dig into the skin.
- Ask whether seams, tags, or closures feel scratchy, tight, or irritating.
Use her feedback alongside what you observe. No standardized romper comfort test is established by the cited guidance.
Inspect seams, fasteners, and decorations
Look closely at stitching and attached parts before play. Health Canada warns that unraveling stitching can leave threads that wrap around a child’s fingers, limbs, or neck. If a seam is unraveling, or a button, snap, or decoration is loose, stop using the romper until it is appropriately repaired or replaced.

- Check for loose threads, open seams, and stitching that appears to be coming apart.
- Make sure buttons, snaps, and other closures are secure and stay closed during movement.
- Look for beads, bells, decals, magnets, or other decorations that seem poorly attached.
- Check that closures do not create an obvious hard or rough pressure point against the skin.
For garments intended for children under three, Health Canada says small parts should not detach with reasonably foreseeable use. Its examples include buttons, beads, bells, snaps, magnetic closures, plastic decals, and hook-and-loop fasteners.
Assess cords and ties for the activity
A loose cord or tie may catch on playground equipment or other objects. Consider whether any cord on the romper could snag during the child’s planned activities.

Do not treat outerwear drawstring rules as romper requirements. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) guidance concerns children’s upper outerwear, and Health Canada’s related advice also addresses outerwear such as jackets and sweatshirts. The CPSC reports 26 deaths and 73 nonfatal incidents associated with neck or hood drawstrings on children’s outerwear from January 1985 through June 2019; those figures are not about rompers or children’s clothing hazards generally. Applicable requirements can depend on the garment’s design and jurisdiction. Read the CPSC guidance on drawstrings in children’s upper outerwear.
Check the seller, labels, and recalls
Before buying, look for clear sizing, fiber and care information, and enough product details to identify the item if you need to check for a recall. Health Canada advises checking clothing recalls and choosing trusted sellers; online shoppers cannot fully examine a garment before it arrives. Check official recall information for the market where the item is sold. In Canada, Health Canada’s children’s garment guidance identifies clothing recalls involving hazards such as flammability, lead, drawstrings, and small parts.
Use a play romper as daywear
Do not use a daywear romper as a substitute for children’s sleepwear. Sleepwear sold in Canada has distinct flammability requirements, and Health Canada advises using actual sleepwear for sleep. Those sleepwear rules do not show that a particular daywear fabric is safer or more comfortable for active play. Read Health Canada’s children’s sleepwear safety guidance.

Compare rompers using observable details
When choosing between two specific items, compare what you can verify about each rather than assuming a fabric or style is universally best.

- Movement fit: Does it pull, ride up, gape, or slip during ordinary play movements?
- Skin comfort: Does the child notice rough seams, scratchy tags, tight elastic, or irritating closures?
- Construction: Are seams and fasteners secure, with no loose threads or detachable small parts?
- Practical use: Are the closures manageable, and does the romper remain comfortable after washing?
- Purchase information: Are sizing, fiber and care labels, seller identity, and product details clear?
Check the care label and how the fabric feels on the child, then reassess fit and comfort after washing. The cited guidance does not establish a universally safest or most comfortable fiber for active play.
