The dependable way to verify a game’s launch date is to find the newest dated announcement on the developer’s or publisher’s official website or verified social account, then cross-check that date on the storefront for your platform and region. Record the old date, replacement date, announcement date, platform, region, edition, and release phase. This prevents an old search result, a different console version, or an early-access date from being mistaken for the current full launch.
A date is a plan, not a guarantee. Keep watching official channels as launch approaches, especially when the game has already moved once.
What counts as proof that a release date changed?
A reliable change is supported by a new, dated statement from the game’s developer or publisher. The clearest notices identify both the previous date and the replacement date. A social post from a verified account can serve the same purpose when it is clearly published by the company responsible for the game.
Write down the announcement date separately from the release date. For example, a notice published on July 21, 2026 could move a game from August 27 to September 17. The July date tells you when the change became public; September 17 is the new planned launch.

A listing on a third-party calendar, retailer page, forum, video description, or search-result snippet is useful for discovering that a date may exist, but it is not final evidence. Use it as a lead and confirm it against an official notice and the relevant storefront.
The five-step verification workflow
1. Find the newest official announcement
- Search for the game’s official website and open its news, announcements, or newsroom section.
- Check the developer’s and publisher’s verified social accounts for a newer dated post.
- Look for wording such as “release date,” “launch,” “delay,” “moving,” “now releasing,” or “available.”
- Compare the publication date of each notice. The newest dated notice supersedes older announcements unless it limits the change to a particular platform, region, edition, or release phase.
A genuine delay notice normally states the old and new dates. SEGA’s July 21, 2026 notice, for example, changed the planned date for the price-revision edition of Hogwarts Legacy from August 27, 2026 to September 17, 2026. The two dates and the edition are all part of the claim; reporting only “September 17” loses important context.
2. Check the platform storefront
Open the store page for the platform you will actually use and for the account region in which you will buy the game. Compare the date shown there with the official announcement.

A storefront check is a cross-check, not a replacement for the publisher’s latest notice.
3. Match the exact release scope
Before deciding that a date changed, identify what the date describes:

- Platform: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Steam, Epic Games Store, or another version.
- Region: A date can differ by country or storefront territory.
- Edition: Standard, deluxe, collector’s, price-revision, or another edition may have its own timing.
- Release phase: Early access, a demo, a beta, a preview build, and the full version 1.0 are different events.
- Launch type: A global release, an early regional launch, or a staged rollout may show different dates.
Bandai Namco’s announcement for Directive 8020 pairs May 12, 2026 with PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (Steam). That platform list is part of the date information. Xbox Wire’s Towerborne announcement likewise identifies its February 26, 2026 full launch together with the participating platforms.
4. Save a change history
Keep a note or spreadsheet rather than relying on browser history. Store the announcement URL, publication date, old date, new date, platform, region, edition, and release phase. Add a short description of what changed and the date on which you checked the storefront.

5. Monitor official channels near launch
Recheck the official news page and verified accounts as launch gets close. No Rest for the Wicked’s official 1.0 notice moved the launch from October 2026 to March 2027 and said the team would continue communicating through official social channels. A second or third change is possible, so an earlier confirmation should not be treated as a permanent guarantee.

When two high-authority sources disagree, scope usually explains the difference. One may refer to PC while the other refers to a console, or one may describe early access while the other describes version 1.0. If the scope is identical and the dates still conflict, use the later official announcement date and continue checking the storefront for an update.

How to read a release date correctly
Platform-specific dates
Do not turn a date for one platform into a claim about every platform. A game may launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S while its Switch or PC version arrives later. Store pages are especially useful here because they attach the date to a particular product listing.

Regional dates
Check the storefront while signed in to the region where you will buy the game. A publisher can announce one calendar date while stores display a different local date because of regional release scheduling or time-zone conversion. Record the country or storefront region in your log.
Early access versus version 1.0
“Playable on” does not always mean “full launch.” Early access can begin months before the completed 1.0 release. A founder, deluxe, or preorder edition may provide earlier access than the standard edition. Label each date in your notes as early access, demo, beta, or full 1.0 so that an earlier playable build is not mistaken for the final launch.
Edition-specific dates
Different editions can have different access windows or even separate release announcements. The Hogwarts Legacy example is specifically for a price-revision edition; applying its September 17 date to every edition would be an error.
Build a release-date change log
A small table is enough. Use one row per official announcement, even when the date did not change, so the timeline remains auditable.

“Not stated as a change” means the announcement supplied a date but did not document an old-to-new move. Do not infer a delay simply because an earlier date appears somewhere else.
Platform-by-platform checking
Nintendo Switch
- Open Nintendo eShop on the Switch or visit the official Nintendo website for your country.
- Search the exact game title and open the product page.
- Record the displayed date, region, edition, and whether the listing says demo, early access, or full game.
- Compare that information with the newest official publisher or developer notice.
Nintendo specifically identifies Nintendo eShop and its official website as places to find a game’s release date. If the store page and a social post differ, save both dates and favor the newer official statement while waiting for the storefront to refresh.
PlayStation 5
Search the PlayStation Store for the PS5 product page, not a PS4 listing or a bundle that includes multiple versions. Check the account region, edition name, and any early-access wording. Then match the page with the publisher’s announcement. A date attached only to another console should not be copied to PS5.
Xbox Series X|S
Use the Xbox store listing for the Series X|S version and check whether the page describes a full launch, a Game Preview build, or another access phase. Xbox Wire announcements can provide useful platform and launch context, but the store page remains the practical check for the account and version you will use.
PC
Open the exact listing on Steam or the Epic Games Store. Confirm the store, edition, operating-system version if multiple products exist, and release phase. A date for Steam does not automatically establish a date for Epic Games Store, and a PC early-access date does not establish the 1.0 launch.

Search tactics that reduce stale results
- Put the complete game title in quotation marks and add terms such as
official announcement,release date,delay, orlaunch. - Include the developer or publisher name when the title is shared by several games.
- Open the article and verify its publication date instead of trusting the date shown in a search snippet.
- Search the official news archive for the title and sort mentally by the newest dated post.
- Check the publisher’s verified account for a short post that may link to a longer notice.
- When a calendar or retailer shows a different date, treat that page as a lead and return to the official source.
Search engines can keep old pages indexed after a delay. A high-ranking result is not necessarily the newest result.

Do not “average” two dates or choose the earlier one because it is more convenient. Resolve the scope first, then use the newest dated official information.
How to keep receiving reliable launch updates
Bookmark the right pages
Save the game’s official news page, the publisher’s announcement archive, and the verified social account. A bookmark to a specific old article is less useful than a bookmark to the page where new notices appear.

Add the currently announced date to a calendar with reminders several weeks before launch and again a few days before it. Include the platform, region, edition, and source in the event title. The reminder is for checking the official channels, not proof that the date remains unchanged.
Recheck at decision points
Verify again before preordering, taking time off work, installing preload files, or arranging a co-op session. These are moments when a stale date has a real cost.
Keep evidence understandable
Save the announcement URL and publication date in your log. If you take a screenshot, include the page title and date so the image can be identified later. Never overwrite the old row when a date changes; add a new row that shows the sequence.
A quick checklist before you share a release date
- Did you read the newest dated notice from the developer or publisher?
- Is the source account verified when the update came through social media?
- Did you check the storefront for your exact platform and region?
- Does the date apply to the same edition you plan to use?
- Is it early access, a demo, a beta, or the full 1.0 launch?
- Did you record both the old and new dates, if a change occurred?
- Did you note the announcement date and keep the source URL?
- Will you check again near launch in case another notice appears?
If every answer is yes, you can report the date with its proper scope instead of presenting an unqualified day as a promise for every player.
