To verify a planned shutdown, find a dated announcement from the game’s publisher or developer on its official news or support site. Search the exact game title with “server shutdown,” “end of service,” or “online services,” then check the game’s launcher and official social channels. Use the publisher’s live status page and your platform’s network-status page to diagnose a current outage, but do not mistake a temporary outage for a permanent closure. The practical question is not simply whether a server is unreachable today, but what will happen to your specific edition, account, saves and offline modes.
Start with the game’s publisher, not a rumor
A permanent closure is confirmed by an official, dated end-of-service notice. Community posts, search snippets, error messages and a service-status incident can suggest a problem, but none proves that the publisher has retired the game.
- Identify the exact title. Include the edition, region, platform and, if relevant, the free-to-play or subscription version. A console release, PC release, mobile edition or regional service can have different operators and different end dates.
- Search the official news and support pages. Use the title with phrases such as
server shutdown,end of service,online services,service retirementandclosure. Search the publisher’s own domain rather than relying on a repost. - Check official announcement channels. Look in the game’s launcher, in-game news panel and verified social accounts. Publishers sometimes post the first notice in those channels and add a support article later.
- Record what the notice actually says. Save the page or screenshot, publication date, final service time and time zone. Notices can be edited as dates or transition plans change.
- Check live status separately. Visit the publisher’s game-status page and your platform’s network-status page. These pages help establish whether an outage is happening now; they do not, by themselves, establish a scheduled retirement.
- Compare the notice with your copy of the game. Confirm that the announcement covers your platform, edition and region before applying its consequences to your account.
If the publisher has posted a dated end-of-service announcement that names your version, you can call the closure announced. If you have only an outage indicator, continue troubleshooting as an interruption.
Shutdown or temporary outage? Use the evidence correctly

EA’s status page, for example, is intended for real-time status checks for its games and platform. Activision’s Online Services page provides a game selector and links to platform-network status. A “down” result on either kind of page is evidence of a current interruption; look for a separate, dated end-of-service announcement before declaring a permanent shutdown.

Exact game, edition, region and platform
Read the title in the notice character by character. A sequel, remaster, regional service or similarly named mobile game may use a different backend. Check whether the notice names PlayStation, Xbox, PC, mobile, a specific storefront or a particular territory. If your version is not named, treat the scope as unresolved and ask the publisher’s support team.
What kind of event is being announced?
Publishers use different language for different events:
- Maintenance: a planned interruption expected to end.
- Outage or incident: an unplanned or indefinite interruption while the publisher investigates.
- Service retirement, end of service or closure: a decision to stop operating the online service.
- Delisting or purchase cutoff: sales or in-game purchases stop, but servers may continue for a period.
Only the last category, when accompanied by a final service date, confirms a planned shutdown. “We are investigating connectivity” is not equivalent to “servers will close on [date].”

Write down the stated time zone as well as the calendar date. A deadline listed in UTC can fall on the previous or next local date. Check the notice again as the deadline approaches; publishers may move the time, add a grace period or publish a separate regional schedule.
Feature scope
“Online services” can include several independent systems. Determine whether the notice affects:
- Matchmaking, multiplayer sessions or ranked play
- Online leaderboards, events and achievements
- User-generated levels, creations or sharing
- Companion applications and web dashboards
- Cloud or online save synchronization
- Purchases, virtual currency and downloadable content delivery
- Account login, license checks or the ability to launch the game
Do not infer that all of these will disappear merely because a headline says “servers shutting down.” The notice may list some features as ending earlier and others as remaining available.

Offline requirements
Look for an explicit statement about campaign play, local multiplayer, training modes and whether an internet connection or account authentication is still required. A game can retain an offline campaign while losing online creations, or it can become unplayable if every launch requires a server handshake.
Separate milestones
Shutdown plans often have more than one date:
- End of new sales or in-game purchases
- Removal from a digital storefront (delisting)
- Expiration of virtual currency or tokens
- Last date for transferring saves or linked accounts
- Final online-service date
- Release of an offline patch or migration tool
These milestones answer different questions. A purchase cutoff does not mean that the servers have already closed, and an announced offline patch does not guarantee that every online feature will be preserved.
Refunds, exports and migration
Check for eligibility rules, request forms, deadlines and regional restrictions. If the publisher offers save-data export, account migration or a refund, complete it before the stated cutoff and keep confirmation emails or ticket numbers.
What official examples teach about scope
LittleBigPlanet 3 on PlayStation
PlayStation’s official “Support for games you can play online” information lists individual decommissioned titles. Its LittleBigPlanet 3 entry says online services, including access to other players’ creations, are unavailable while the offline campaign remains playable. The lesson is practical: losing servers does not automatically erase every mode.
GUNS UP!
The same PlayStation information says GUNS UP! requires an online connection and would not be playable once its service ended. This is the opposite outcome from an offline-preserved campaign. You must read the title-specific entry rather than apply another game’s behavior.
Gran Turismo Sport
Gran Turismo Sport’s notice distinguishes online functions that ended from offline portions that remained. A service retirement can therefore remove particular systems while leaving a defined subset of the game usable.

Warface: Clutch
In its official shutdown FAQ, MY.GAMES says updates would be shared through the official website, social media channels, and in-game or launcher messages while the servers remained active. The announcement also states: “The closure means that the game’s servers will be shut down on the announced date. After that, all online features, multiplayer functionality, and access to game content will no longer be available, and the game will no longer be playable.” That description applies to Warface: Clutch specifically. The FAQ says the game has no offline or local mode, so it will not function without active servers. It also separates the end of purchases from the later service retirement.
SYNDUALITY Echo of Ada
On September 26, 2026, Bandai Namco announced that SYNDUALITY Echo of Ada’s online service would end after May 2027 and that an offline version was in development. The notice separates paid-token sales, save-data transfer, later publication of the exact end date and the transition to offline play. This is an example of an online closure paired with an offline transition, not a rule that applies to other games.
Check whether your platform is the problem
- Open the game’s official service-status page and note the incident, affected regions and estimated recovery time, if provided.
- Open the network-status page for your console or PC platform and check for account, store, multiplayer or authentication incidents.
- Try another online game or the platform’s account services. If several games fail, the platform or local connection is more likely than this title’s dedicated servers.
- Check the publisher’s news and support pages for a dated retirement notice. Keep this check separate from the live-status result.
- If the publisher lists maintenance with an end time, wait for that window to pass before treating the problem as unexplained.
A service-status page can be incomplete or update slowly. Use the combination of a game-specific notice, live status and platform status rather than one indicator in isolation.

State exactly what you checked and when. A careful report would say: “As of October 16, 2026, I found no shutdown announcement on the publisher’s official news and support pages or the game’s official channels.” That wording describes the search without promising that service will continue.
- Search the publisher’s site for the exact title and the terms “shutdown,” “end of service,” “closure” and “online services.”
- Check the launcher and in-game announcements, including archived notices if available.
- Review verified social accounts for a dated statement, then confirm that the account belongs to the publisher or developer.
- Look for a support article covering your platform and region; a notice for another edition may not apply.
- Contact publisher support if the evidence remains ambiguous. Preserve the response date, case number and the exact platform or edition you asked about.
An empty news page is not proof that the servers are safe. An official notice can be posted later, a page can be hard to index, or a regional service can use a different channel.
When official pages disagree
Rank the sources by authority and specificity. A publisher notice naming your exact game and platform is stronger than a platform-wide status banner. A newer notice normally supersedes an older one, especially when it changes the date or scope.
- Compare publication and update timestamps.
- Prefer the page that identifies the exact edition, region and platform.
- Separate temporary status information from a formal retirement announcement.
- Look for a later FAQ or correction from the same publisher.
- Ask publisher support for confirmation before telling players that a closure is definitive.
Until the conflict is resolved, describe the uncertainty: identify which page says what, include the dates and avoid presenting an unverified end date as fact.

Build a verifiable answer for other players
If you are posting the answer in a forum, chat or support group, make it easy for someone else to audit. Name the publisher, link to the specific notice, quote the sentence that gives the end date and state when you checked it. Include the platform and region you investigated. “The servers are shutting down” is much less useful than “The publisher’s PlayStation notice, updated on [date], says online matchmaking ends at [time zone] on [date], while the single-player mode remains available.”
Keep three facts separate in your wording: what is happening now, what has been announced for the future and what the announcement says will remain afterward. For example, a live page may show degraded service today, while a separate notice schedules retirement months later. Conversely, a game may be offline temporarily even though no retirement has been announced. Combining those facts into one sentence can create a false conclusion.
When quoting a social-media announcement, follow the link back to the publisher’s account and look for a matching support article. Verify that the post is not an event reminder, regional translation or notice for a different title. If the post is later edited or deleted, your saved screenshot should still show the account name, publication date and relevant wording, but the publisher’s current page remains the better reference.
Common mistakes that produce the wrong answer
- Searching only the game title. Add “end of service,” “shutdown” or “online services” and search the publisher’s domain.
- Reading only the headline. The details may distinguish purchases, matchmaking, saves and launch authentication.
- Assuming a delisting is a shutdown. A game can stop selling while existing owners continue playing online.
- Assuming an offline patch is universal. An offline transition announced for one title says nothing about another game.
- Ignoring time zones. A date in UTC may end service on a different local calendar date.
- Using another player’s platform as proof. Console, PC, mobile and regional services can follow different schedules.
- Calling an empty status page reassurance. A page that shows no incident does not promise future availability.
- Waiting until the final hour to migrate. Transfer tools, support queues and account-linking deadlines may close earlier.
Questions to ask publisher support
Use a short, specific message rather than asking whether the game is “dead.” Identify the exact edition, platform, region and account type, then ask:

Save the reply, ticket number and response date. Support may clarify an individual edition, but a public notice remains the authoritative reference for the wider player base.

- Capture important information. Export or screenshot achievements, characters, creations, settings and purchase records if the game provides no formal export.
- Use transfer tools early. If save migration or account linking has a deadline, complete it well before the final day and verify the destination account.
- Spend or preserve virtual currency only according to the notice. Check the stated expiration and refund rules; do not assume unused currency will transfer.
- Install required patches. An offline mode may require a final update, while an unpatched installation may still attempt to contact retired servers.
- Plan for authentication. If the notice says an account login or license check remains required, keep the relevant account accessible.
- Recheck the date. Confirm the final time zone and any updated instructions shortly before closure.
A concise verification checklist
- Official publisher or developer notice found
- Exact game, edition, region and platform match
- Notice says retirement or end of service, not only maintenance

- Online features and offline behavior listed
- Purchase, delisting, currency and transfer milestones checked
- Refund, export or migration deadline understood

The reliable conclusion is narrow: an official, dated notice confirms an announced shutdown for the scope it names. Everything else—current status, offline play, purchases, data and regional availability—must be verified from the same title-specific information.

Does a server-status page prove that a game is shutting down?
No. A status page showing “down,” “degraded” or maintenance normally describes a current interruption. Confirm a permanent closure with a dated publisher or developer announcement that gives a final service date.
What if the publisher says only that online services are ending?

Is delisting the same as a shutdown?

As soon as the publisher opens a transfer or export process. Such tools can close before the final server date, and support queues may grow near the deadline. Keep confirmation emails, ticket numbers and screenshots.
Do I need special hardware or software to verify a shutdown?
No. The relevant evidence is the publisher’s notice, launcher or official social announcement, live service page and platform network-status page. A router, headset or printed guide cannot establish whether a service retirement has been scheduled.
