Before installing a free app, check its privacy disclosure in the app store, read the developer’s privacy policy for details, and review the permissions and privacy activity recorded by your device. These checks reveal what the developer says it does and what access the app can request or has used—but neither a store label nor a permission prompt is a complete audit of every data flow.
Start with the app-store privacy label
Use the store page for the version of the app you are considering. Google Play and Apple’s App Store show privacy information in different formats, so read the details rather than treating either one as a simple “safe” or “unsafe” rating.
| Store | Where to look | What the disclosure helps you assess |
|---|---|---|
| Google Play | Open the app listing, scroll to Data safety, then tap See details. Google says this section is available for Play-distributed apps on Android 5 and up. | Developer-declared data categories collected or shared, purposes, whether collection is optional, and information about security and deletion. Google Play Help explains the section and how to interpret it. |
| Apple App Store | Open the app’s product page and read its privacy information. | Types of data that may be collected, whether data is linked to you or your device, and whether it is used for Apple-defined tracking. Apple Support explains the labels and choices available to users. |
These disclosures are supplied by developers within each platform’s reporting rules. They are useful starting points, not independent certifications that an app collects nothing, shares nothing, or handles information exactly as you would prefer. A label can also summarize multiple app versions or practices that vary by region, age, or how the app is used.

Google Play’s Data safety section reports collection and sharing under Google’s definitions. Apple’s privacy information separately describes data categories, linkage to a user or device, and Apple-defined tracking. A word such as “tracking” has a specific meaning in Apple’s system; it does not automatically describe every analytics or advertising practice. Read each label on its own terms, then use the policy to answer questions the label leaves open.

How to check an Android app on Google Play
- Open Google Play and select the app’s listing. Confirm that you have the right app and developer; similarly named apps can have different disclosures.
- Scroll to Data safety and select See details.
- Read the categories listed under collection and sharing. Pay particular attention to sensitive information that is relevant to the app’s function, such as precise location, contacts, financial or health information, photos, messages, and identifiers.
- For each relevant category, check the stated purpose. Is the data used for core functionality, analytics, advertising, personalization, or more than one purpose? Check whether collection is described as optional.
- Read the security and deletion information. If you create an account, look for a way to request deletion of the account and associated data.
- Compare the label with the app’s privacy policy and any explanation shown in the app. Google says the Data safety label summarizes all versions distributed on Google Play, while practices can vary with use, region, and age.
- On the device, review the app’s permissions. Use Permission manager or the Privacy Dashboard to inspect sensitive access such as location, camera, and microphone. Android’s privacy and permissions guidance describes these controls.
Permission names and settings can differ between Android versions and device makers. Look for the system’s app-permission controls, Permission manager, or Privacy Dashboard rather than assuming every phone has an identical menu path. A permission review answers what the operating system allows or records on the device; the Data safety label addresses developer disclosures under Google Play’s definitions. You need both to understand the app more fully.
The Data safety section is a developer declaration, not a report generated by watching every network connection from your phone. Check the category, purpose, and optionality together: a category might be listed for more than one reason, and a collection described as optional may depend on a choice or feature you use. If the listing does not explain which circumstance applies to you, look in the policy or the app’s own explanation rather than guessing.
How to check an iPhone app on the App Store
- Open the app’s App Store product page and read its privacy information.
- Review the data categories and whether the developer says data is linked to you or your device. Check whether the app says it uses data to track you.
- Open the developer’s privacy policy when you need details about purposes, recipients, retention, or differences by version, region, age, or use case.
- In iOS privacy settings, review available controls and access history. App Privacy Report can provide information about an app’s access and network activity; consult Apple’s privacy-information guidance for how to interpret App Store disclosures and user choices.
Apple’s guidance describes the general platform concepts, but settings and label availability can vary with operating-system version and region. Treat the App Privacy Report as additional device-level context, not a replacement for the product-page disclosure or privacy policy. A record of access or network activity does not, by itself, tell you every reason data was accessed, how long it is retained, or who ultimately receives it.
On the App Store, “linked to you” and “used to track you” are distinct questions to inspect. Linkage concerns whether collected data is associated with your identity or device as described in the label; tracking refers to Apple’s defined cross-company advertising and measurement practices. Neither field alone answers every question about a recipient, retention period, or the app’s core functionality. If a distinction matters to your choice, check the policy for its explanation.
What “collected,” “shared,” and “tracking” mean
Google Play’s definition of collected data
Google generally treats data as collected when a developer uses the app to retrieve it off the device. Its rules include exceptions, such as some data used only on-device, data processed ephemerally, and end-to-end encrypted content. As a result, a “not collected” declaration is not necessarily a promise that no information ever leaves the device. Read the category details and policy instead of treating the summary as a universal statement about every transmission.

Google Play’s definition of shared data
Google’s rules also exclude some third-party transfers from the “shared” category. Examples include certain transfers initiated by the user, transfers that are prominently disclosed and made with consent, and processing by a service provider. A “not shared” declaration therefore does not prove that no outside organization processes information. It describes sharing according to Google Play’s reporting definitions. The Google Play Help page sets out the scope and exceptions.
Apple’s tracking label
Apple uses “tracking” for a specific practice: linking app or device data with data from other companies’ apps, websites, or offline properties for targeted advertising or advertising measurement, and sharing data with data brokers. Examples include using cross-company app or web activity to target ads, or sharing location or email lists with a data broker. It is not a synonym for every kind of analytics, data transfer, or advertising inside one app. See Apple’s developer guidance on privacy and data use for the platform definition and its discussion of third-party SDKs.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Permissions are not a sharing report
A permission indicates that an app can access something under the operating system’s rules, or that the system recorded such access. It does not prove the app transmitted the information, retained it, or disclosed it to a partner. The reverse can also happen: information supplied directly to an app or inferred from account activity may not require a sensor permission such as camera access. For that reason, a permission prompt is neither proof of sharing nor proof of harmlessness if denied. Use permissions to judge device access, and labels and policies to understand declared data practices.
For example, granting location access tells you that the operating system allows the app to use location in the circumstances shown by your device’s controls. It does not establish whether the app sends that location to its developer, uses it only for a feature, or passes it to another party. Conversely, an app can receive information you enter into an account without asking for access to a phone sensor. Keep the questions separate: what can the app access, what does the developer say it collects or shares, and what does the policy say happens afterward?
Read the privacy policy for the missing context
A store label is designed to summarize practices. The policy is where to look when the summary leaves a decision-relevant question unanswered. Search for the app’s name in the policy and inspect how it explains the data categories identified on the store page.

- Purpose: Does the policy explain why each relevant category is used, distinguishing core features from analytics, personalization, or advertising?
- Recipients: Does it identify categories of recipients or name organizations that receive data? A service-provider relationship still involves data processing or transfer; do not infer that information never leaves the developer’s control.
- Choice: Can you decline optional collection or advertising-related use without losing a feature you need? Find the actual opt-out or permission control rather than relying on a broad assurance.
- Retention and deletion: Does the policy explain how long information is kept and how to request deletion? If you use an account, check for an in-app deletion route and a web resource for a deletion request.
- Scope: Does the policy qualify its statements by app version, region, age group, or use case? Check that the explanation applies to your circumstances.
- Clarity: Is the answer specific enough to understand what happens to your information? A general claim such as “we respect your privacy” does not answer which data is collected, why, or with whom it is shared.
Read the policy alongside the actual store page, not in isolation. A policy may describe several services or use cases, so identify whether its terms apply to the app and feature you plan to use. If the policy mentions advertising, analytics, providers, or account data, look for an explanation of which data categories are involved and what choices are available. If it uses broad language without explaining the practice you are trying to assess, treat the answer as unclear.
For account deletion, distinguish between removing the app from your phone and asking the developer to delete an account and associated data. Uninstalling removes the app from the device, but the store’s deletion information concerns a request to the developer. Google Play says apps that allow account creation must provide both an in-app path to request account deletion and a web resource for requesting deletion of the account and associated data. Check those routes before you sign up if deletion options matter to you.
The Federal Trade Commission advises app marketers to make key disclosures clear and conspicuous, explain what they collect and what they do with it, and make choices easy to find and use. Its guidance says, “Even if you need to collect or share data so your app can operate, be clear to users about your practices,” and, “Offer choices that are easy to find and easy to use.” Those are FTC recommendations to app marketers, not a guarantee that a particular app follows them. See the FTC’s Marketing Your Mobile App: Get It Right from the Start.
Compare apps on the same privacy questions
If you are choosing between two candidates, compare their disclosures on the same axes instead of relying on a single score or on whether an app is free. Record what each app actually says; mark an unanswered question as unclear rather than guessing.
| Question | What to compare |
|---|---|
| What information? | Relevant categories, especially precise location, contacts, financial or health information, photos, messages, and identifiers. |
| Why is it used? | Stated purposes such as core functionality, analytics, advertising, or personalization. |
| Is it optional or linked? | Whether collection is optional and whether the label says data is linked to you or your device. |
| Is there platform-defined tracking? | For an Apple listing, whether data is used for Apple-defined tracking; do not equate this with all analytics or transfers. |
| Who receives it? | Declared sharing categories and recipients where disclosed, plus policy explanations of providers and other recipients. |
| What access does the app use? | Requested permissions and available history of sensitive access, considered separately from off-device data practices. |
| Can you control or delete it? | Retention and deletion explanations, account controls, opt-outs, and the availability of an account-deletion request. |
| Does the disclosure fit your situation? | Stated differences by free or paid tier, region, age group, app version, or use case. |
Only compare information the disclosures actually provide. If one policy names a purpose or recipient and the other does not, that is a difference in transparency; it does not establish what the less specific app does in practice. Likewise, a developer’s use of a service provider does not mean the data stays on your device or is never transferred.

For a practical comparison, write down the data categories that matter most to you and check each candidate against the same list. For a map or navigation feature, location may be central; for a photo tool, photo access may be expected. That does not settle whether the stated purpose, optionality, recipients, or retention are acceptable. A less sensitive permission list is not automatically a better choice if the disclosure leaves important practices unexplained, and a longer list is not proof of misuse. Compare the explanations and the controls you can actually use.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to do when the disclosures do not add up
Look for a mismatch among the app’s purpose, its declared data categories, its permissions, and its explanation of recipients. A navigation app requesting location may have a clear functional reason; a simple utility requesting access to contacts deserves a more specific explanation. These examples are prompts to investigate, not proof that an app is behaving improperly.
- Permission seems unnecessary: Deny it if the operating system offers that choice, then see whether the feature you need still works. You can also review or change app access later in the device’s privacy controls.
- Label is broad but policy is detailed: Use the policy to understand the purpose and conditions, and check whether it covers your app version, region, and use.
- Policy is vague or hard to find: Look for a privacy contact or a more app-specific explanation. Do not treat a general privacy slogan as an answer to a concrete question.
- Deletion is unclear: Check the app’s account settings and the developer’s web deletion resource. Google says apps that allow account creation must provide an in-app path to request account deletion and a web resource for requesting deletion of the account and associated data.
- Important practice remains unexplained: If you cannot determine whether sensitive data is necessary, who receives it, or how to limit it, choosing another app or not installing it is a reasonable privacy decision.
If you already installed the app, the same checks still apply. Revisit the store listing and policy, review permissions and available access history, and use in-app or system controls to change optional access where possible. If you decide to stop using an account-based app, look for its account deletion process rather than assuming uninstalling completes that request. If a setting or choice is unavailable, note that limitation in your decision instead of assuming the app has no access or retains nothing.
A free price does not establish that an app sells personal data, and a “no data collected” label does not establish that no information ever leaves the device. The useful decision is narrower: based on the disclosures, policy, permissions, and available controls, are the app’s stated data practices acceptable for the feature you want?
Frequently Asked Questions
How can I tell what data an app collects before downloading it?
Open its Google Play listing and read Data safety, or open its App Store product page and read the privacy information. Check the categories, purposes, optionality, linkage or tracking details where shown, then read the developer’s privacy policy for context the compact label does not explain.

Does a permission prompt mean an app is sharing my data?
No. A permission tells you what the operating system allows or records the app accessing on your device. It does not establish that the app sends the information off-device, retains it, or shares it with another organization. Check the store disclosure and policy separately.
Does “not collected” or “not shared” mean no information leaves my phone?
Not necessarily. Google Play’s definitions have exceptions, including some data used only on-device, processed ephemerally, or protected with end-to-end encryption; some third-party processing also does not count as sharing under its rules. Read the category details and policy rather than treating the label as a statement about every data flow.
What is the difference between Apple’s “tracking” label and analytics?
Apple defines tracking as linking app or device data with data from other companies’ apps, websites, or offline properties for targeted advertising or ad measurement, and includes sharing data with data brokers. It is not a synonym for every form of analytics or data transfer.
If I uninstall an app, is my account and data deleted?
Uninstalling removes the app from your device; it is not the same as requesting deletion of an account and associated data from the developer. Check the app’s account settings and its web deletion resource. Google Play says account-creating apps must provide an in-app deletion request path and a web resource for requesting deletion.
Does a free app necessarily sell personal data?
No. A free price alone does not establish that an app sells personal data. Check the app’s actual disclosures for stated purposes such as advertising or analytics, who receives data where disclosed, and what choices or deletion controls are available.
The Bottom Line
Check the store’s privacy label, read the policy for purposes and recipients, and review device permissions and privacy activity separately. These sources answer different questions and have limits. If sensitive practices remain unclear or the app’s access does not fit its purpose, you can deny optional access, choose another app, or decide not to install it.
