The sweetener most often meant by the phrase “linked to DNA damage” is sucralose, a high-intensity sweetener also sold under the brand name Splenda. To check a packaged food or drink, read its ingredient list: look for sucralose in the United States, or sucralose and sometimes the additive number E955 in the European Union.
That label check identifies an ingredient; it does not measure how much is present or establish that the product harms you. In February 2026, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) concluded that sucralose presents no genotoxicity concern when used as the authorised food additive E955, while still discussing positive results from some laboratory comet-assay tests.
What to look for on the package
Turn the package over and find the legally required ingredient list. Ignore front-of-pack descriptions such as “diet,” “zero sugar,” “no added sugar,” or “sugar-free” when trying to identify a particular sweetener. Those marketing terms describe a product characteristic, not the chemical used to provide sweetness.

The US Food and Drug Administration’s practical instruction is straightforward: consumers identify a sweetener by looking for its name in the ingredient list. FDA lists sucralose as an approved food sweetener and identifies Splenda as a brand name for sucralose. See the FDA guidance on aspartame and other sweeteners in food.

If neither “sucralose” nor, where applicable, “E955” appears, that particular packaged product does not declare sucralose under those identifiers. The result does not tell you which other sweeteners may be present, how much sweetener the product contains, or whether the food is appropriate for your personal medical circumstances.
Step-by-step: checking a food or drink
- Locate the ingredient panel. On a box, bottle, can, pouch, or wrapper, look for the heading “Ingredients” or the equivalent heading required where the product was sold. The panel may be on the back, side, or underside.
- Read the complete list rather than the front label. A product described as diet or sugar-free can use sucralose, another sweetener, several sweeteners, or no added sweetener. The front description cannot identify the formulation.
- Scan for the exact name. In a US label, search for “sucralose.” In an EU label, search for “sucralose” and “E955.” Packaging typography, line breaks, or a long list of ingredients can make a manual scan easier if you read slowly from beginning to end.
- Record what you found. If the term appears, the product declares sucralose. If it does not, do not infer its presence from the product category or from a brand’s advertising language.
- Check the country of sale. Label conventions differ by jurisdiction. A product imported from another market may use a different additive-number system or translated ingredient name, so identify where that specific package was labelled.
- Use the manufacturer’s current label only as a supplement. A website image, retailer listing, or an older package may not match the item in your hand. For an immediate decision, use the physical package’s ingredient panel and, if necessary, ask the manufacturer about a reformulation.
This process answers one narrow question: whether the product declares sucralose using the identifiers you searched. It is not a laboratory test and cannot establish exposure from a serving, a day’s diet, or a person’s total intake.
Why sucralose became associated with “DNA damage”
The wording usually traces to discussion of sucralose and a related compound called sucralose-6-acetate. Some laboratory studies using a comet assay reported effects suggestive of primary DNA damage. A comet assay measures DNA strand breaks in individual cells; a positive result is one piece of a genotoxicity assessment, not by itself proof that a food causes disease in people.

EFSA’s February 2026 scientific opinion evaluated the full evidence for sucralose as food additive E955. The panel considered the positive comet-assay findings together with negative in-vivo studies of gene mutation and chromosomal damage, including tests in tissues that had shown comet-assay signals. It also considered a biologically plausible indirect mechanism involving oxidative stress.
EFSA’s overall conclusion was:
“Overall, considering the negative results obtained in mutagenicity studies in vivo on apical genotoxicity endpoints (gene mutation and chromosomal damage), also including the same tissues that revealed positive effects in comet assay, and the plausible indirect genotoxic mode of action secondary to induced oxidative stress, the Panel concluded that there is no concern for the genotoxicity of sucralose when used as food additive (E 955).”

That conclusion applies to sucralose’s authorised use as a food additive. It does not mean every product marketed as sugar-free contains sucralose, and it does not establish that a product containing sucralose causes DNA damage or disease in consumers. Sucralose is not the same as aspartame
Online discussions sometimes merge several sweetener controversies. Aspartame is a different substance with a different label identifier and a separate regulatory history. Confusing the two can lead you to reject or select the wrong product.

FDA discusses aspartame separately, including the International Agency for Research on Cancer’s 2023 classification of aspartame as “possibly carcinogenic to humans.” That is a cancer-hazard classification, not the same endpoint as the sucralose genotoxicity question. FDA says it disagrees with IARC’s conclusion and reports that the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives did not raise safety concerns at current use levels or change its acceptable daily intake. Consult the EFSA information on aspartame for the EU context.
If your concern is specifically sucralose, searching for “aspartame” or “E951” will not answer it. Conversely, a package that is free of sucralose can still contain aspartame or another sweetener.
Where sucralose may appear
FDA gives examples of food categories in which sucralose is used, including beverages, baked goods, chewing gum, gelatins, and frozen dairy desserts. These are examples of permitted or observed categories, not a prediction that every item in a category contains sucralose.

- Beverages: A low- or no-sugar drink may use sucralose, another high-intensity sweetener, a blend, or a formulation that is not sweetened with an added intense sweetener.
- Baked goods: Reduced-sugar cookies, bars, or other products may include sucralose, but the category alone cannot identify the ingredient.
- Chewing gum: Sweeteners are common in gum, yet the exact choice must still be confirmed on the ingredient panel.
- Gelatins and dessert mixes: A “sugar-free” description does not specify whether sucralose, aspartame, or another additive is used.
- Frozen dairy desserts: Reduced-sugar formulations vary by manufacturer and can contain one or more sweeteners.
The same caution applies to restaurant drinks, fountain beverages, bakery items, and unpackaged foods. If there is no accessible ingredient list, you cannot reliably identify sucralose from the menu name or a claim such as “light.” Ask the seller for the current ingredient information or choose a product with a full label when that distinction matters.

Find the ingredient statement, not the nutrition panel
The Nutrition Facts panel tells you amounts of nutrients such as total carbohydrate and sugars. It does not replace the ingredient statement for identifying a named sweetener. Start with the ingredients and look for “sucralose.”
Do not treat a brand name as the ingredient
Splenda is a brand name associated with sucralose. Packaged foods generally identify the ingredient in the regulated ingredient list, so search for the generic name rather than relying on a brand logo or a phrase in advertising.
Read every line when blends are used
A formulation can contain several sweeteners. Finding one sweetener does not prove that it is the only one, and failing to find sucralose does not prove the product has no sweetener. Continue through the entire list and note each relevant term.
Check the actual package date and version
Manufacturers can change recipes and packaging. A retailer’s online image or a previously purchased package may be out of date. When an ingredient matters to you, compare the label on the product you intend to consume and contact the manufacturer if the wording is unclear.

How to read EU labels and the E-number
Recognise E955
In the European Union, food additives can be identified by an E-number. E955 is the identifier for sucralose. The label may show the name, the number, or both, depending on the product’s required presentation. Search for either form.
Do not confuse E955 with E951
E951 identifies aspartame, not sucralose. If you are checking for the sweetener associated with the DNA-damage discussion, E955 is the relevant number in the EU convention.
Keep the jurisdiction in view
An E-number is useful for an EU-labelled product. It should not be assumed to be the universal format for every country. Imported goods may carry multiple languages or local additive conventions, and the current rules of the market where the product was labelled control what appears on the package.

These limits matter because ingredient identification and health-risk evaluation are different tasks. A label is the right tool for deciding whether to avoid a named ingredient; it is not evidence that a product is dangerous simply because the ingredient appears, nor evidence that a person has no risk because it does not.

Assuming “sugar-free” means “sucralose”
Sugar-free describes the absence or reduction of sugars under the applicable labelling rules. It does not select a particular sweetener. The product could use aspartame, a different additive, a blend, or no intense sweetener.

Assuming “natural” or “clean” identifies the sweetener
These marketing terms do not substitute for the regulated ingredient list. A product’s front-panel positioning cannot confirm or rule out sucralose.
Treating a positive comet assay as a consumer diagnosis
A comet-assay signal is a laboratory finding that must be interpreted with other genotoxicity studies, exposure conditions, and biological evidence. EFSA’s 2026 assessment did not treat the isolated positive findings as proof of harm from authorised food-additive use.
Searching for the wrong chemical
Looking only for aspartame or E951 will miss sucralose. Looking only for sucralose will not answer a separate question about aspartame. Use the identifier that matches the concern you are investigating.
Relying on an old photograph of the package
Recipes and labels can change. Verify the current physical package, especially when a product has recently been reformulated or when you are checking a newly purchased item.
A practical decision checklist
- Have you turned the package over and found the complete ingredient list?
- Did you search for “sucralose” rather than relying on “diet” or “sugar-free” wording?
- If the product is labelled for the EU, did you also search for E955?
- Did you check the country or market for which the package was labelled?
- Did you distinguish sucralose/E955 from aspartame/E951?
- Did you avoid inferring a health risk from the ingredient’s presence alone?
- If the label is missing or ambiguous, did you ask the manufacturer or seller for the current ingredient statement?
What the February 2026 EFSA update changes
The update is important because older online discussions may present laboratory DNA-damage signals without the regulator’s later overall assessment. EFSA’s February 2026 opinion considered positive comet-assay results alongside negative in-vivo findings for gene mutation and chromosomal damage, including relevant tissues, and concluded that there is no concern for sucralose genotoxicity when used as food additive E955.
The opinion evaluates authorised food-additive use and separately addresses a proposed extension to fine bakery wares. Approval or safety conclusions for existing uses should not be read as automatic approval of every proposed use. The specific scope of the opinion matters when applying it to a product category.
For a shopper, the practical consequence is unchanged: identify the ingredient from the current label, then interpret the scientific claim in its proper regulatory context. The presence of sucralose on a package is an ingredient fact; the EFSA conclusion is a population-level regulatory assessment of authorised use, not a statement about an individual’s symptoms, diagnosis, or personal dietary decision.
